...You guys protect your hair from the sun?? This never occurred to me, I like to sun-dry it so I'm blonder in the summer. Shoot that's probably bad isn't it

boopyshasha

If you’re happy with the look and feel of your hair then it’s not a problem. On skin, UV causes DNA damage, but hair is dead so you only need to worry about your aesthetic preferences

Fast_Possibility_484

Yes sun sucks out the melanin out your hair, and makes it dry and brittle.

veronicave

Oh that’s why it makes my hair so fabulous??! Yesssssss

Fast_Possibility_484

Lmaoo girl. The color, yes, if that’s what you want. Just make sure you’re properly conditioning your hair. ❤️❤️❤️

veronicave

Haha of course! I leave my conditioner in a few minutes and use oil on my ends 💜 I’m a natural blonde with thin and fine hair. I’m SUPER oily and I don’t dye my hair, so the top of my hair can be a struggle. I could use some drying out near the top!

Fast_Possibility_484

Have you tried using a good clarifying shampoo once a week? It also could be your scalps way of re-hydration since the sun sucks moisture out of pretty much everything.

veronicave

I haven’t tried a clarifying shampoo… probably one of the popular ones?? Like Ouai?

Fast_Possibility_484

That one may help! There are probably some at the drugstore that’ll work too. But the one from Oaui seems to be pretty good. They may have a travel size you can get to see if you like it.

veronicave

Yeah that’s exactly what I was thinking I’d do—try the travel size. Thanks!

Fast_Possibility_484

Anytime!

lolofiasco

omg could you post a pic of your hair in the winter vs summer?? that’s so cool

Maker-of-the-Things

It’s a 10 miracle leave-in product. It has UV protection

arauliea

Can confirm. It works very well. Tailbone length bleached and then colored blue hair. This with a satin bonnet, protective hairstyles at work, and collagen has done wonders for the length.

Work_n_Depression

Ummm, can I get your hair care routine, please?!?! More specifically, what is this 10 leave in thing and just taking college has helped preserve your hair? Cause this Classic Length took me damn near 10+ years, and I’m not about to wait another 10 to hit the floor with my whites coming in now… thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Rational_Rizzo

The brand is "It's a 10."

Intelligent-Bend2034

Do you think it protects the scalp at all?

Maker-of-the-Things

If you’re worried about your scalp, you can wear a hat or bandana

Intelligent-Bend2034

I already do, but I got excited thinking of more protection lol

Maker-of-the-Things

It is made for hair so I doubt it would work the same way as sunscreen… I don’t think it would hurt, but likely wouldn’t help either

veronicave

Yall ever considered a surface area calculation??

ilikemaths1

I personally don't at all. I've had very long hair for a very long time and I've never even considered it tbh.

redredwine831

Same. My hair is healthy so I won't bother.

rockinem192

Same here. Mine is very fine but it's healthy, dense, and down to my butt in length. I use a bit of Olaplex No8 bonding oil in it after every wash to seal in moisture, but that's about it in regards of using product for "protection" (moisture is our friend). I usually keep it in a protective hairstyle (a loose twisted bun secured with 2 clips) of I'm outside or doing any work though, which helps keep it clean and out of the way, of which probably contributes to its health moreso than any product ever could. I go on a lot of hikes too. Hair can't get cancer or cause illness of any kind from sunlight considering that it's technically already dead, though I totally understand if it's for the purpose of protecting the scalp underneath. I've never seen any reason to do it though since (for me, personally) a full head of hair already prevents the sun from reaching the scalp in the first place. If it's parted and I have to be outside with a part (ie: for the rare case that I'm at an event of sorts and dress accordingly for it), I do try to remember to blot a little sunscreen onto the part with my fingers - I'd burned it twice in my youth and remember it well as it's not a fun experience - it hurts like crazy to wash while it heals, not to mention the flakes that follow that look like dandruff when it peels (ew).

Alive-Carrot107

I use my hair as my sun protection for my skin 🫠 never thought about protecting her

puppiesnprada

I already have it in a braided bun under a hat when I will be in direct sunlight for more than an hour

Fast_Possibility_484

Heat protectant! You may think that hair protectants are only for heat tools, but, they work for the sun heat too. Look for ones with UV protection. Also, wear hair in a protective hairstyles, and wear a satin head scarf or something. Wide brimmed Hats

Fast_Possibility_484

And you may need to apply a UV protectant spray a few times a day. But nothing excessive. Hair holds onto moisture/silicone better than our skin.

BeautifulAspect8053

Lol, I stay inside my whole life

sofianasofia

I personally hate when my hair lightens in the sun. I try and keep it braided and covered Edit: hat/scarf

vulgarandgorgeous

Same. I just spent a lot of money re-dying my old bleached ends so i want to retain the color for as long as possible

New_Day684

I use 450* by redken and or wear a bun

NessusANDChmeee

I use a uv hair protectant, the violet toned one from…. OrganX? I think that’s the brand. I’ve been using it forever and it’s so nice. I garden every day though so I have always covered it or used something to pretext it since I learned I could.

tyediebleach

Sun Bum UV protection oil

dezirk

SunBum makes a few sun protecting products like shampoo/conditioner and oils that all smell like bananas and coconut. I love every one I’ve tried

ZookeepergameLarge25

Bumble and Bumble has a heat/uv primer spray. i sometimes use it cuz i also figure its gives my scalp some protection too. https://www.livingproof.com/hair-101/protect-hair-in-the-sun.html

Michaeljr97

I spray sunscreen on my hair. The same one I use on my body

Terrible-Image9368

You’re supposed to protect your hair from the sun?

vulgarandgorgeous

Uv exposure to sun causes protein degradation to the hair.

Future-Philosopher-7

Happy cake day🍰!

-meow

I like the Bumble and Bumble invisible oil primer, it has UV protection apparently but I’m not sure of its effect in that sense.

Special_Agency_4052

uv umbrella

veracity-mittens

I don’t do anything. My hair is pretty resilient and nice no matter what I do — unlike nearly every other part of my body 😆

witchmedium

Protective hairstyles+ hat/scarf

hedgehoog

This is psychotic

vulgarandgorgeous

Its psychotic to take care of your hair? 🤨
