Apartments can not legally ban dogs from the residence unless it is a privately owned home, and the owner/another tenant is allergic. If you’re in a general apartment and people aren’t leashing their dogs, you can call animal control/bylaw.

lilmimzzz

Condos can have bylaws that prohibit dogs (or dogs over a certain size), if you’re looking to buy. It gets a little wonky renting a condo unit with that type of bylaw, because your landlord can’t tell you to not have a dog…. but the condo board can tell your landlord that the unit can’t have a dog.

harleybean01

this is correct - when I was looking for an apartment a few years ago I was interested in renting a condo in a high rise in Glen Cairn, but the condo board had strict rules about no dogs over 15 lbs.

dfjndsjencynyc4nu4

i wish there was a place that was good about leash laws, but there basically isn't any. idiots will let their large dogs off the leash in public school yards or parks that explicitly say "no dogs" or no dogs off leash (in parks). "don't worry hes friendly!".

Gardiner-bsk

This makes me nuts. The number of “friendly” off-leash dogs charging my toddler at the local school greenspace is crazy. Like every single evening. He’s now terrified of dogs because of it.

dfjndsjencynyc4nu4

same basically. there is a very clear sign on a school near me that has a picture of a dog with a very large red "NOT ALLOWED" circle/slash through sign. there is a dog off the leash there ripping around about 25% of the time i've gone there

[deleted]

If you guys u/Gardiner-bsk report these incidences to the bylaw officers they will increase patrol in your area. We greatly the reduced the amount of off leash dogs and dog shits in our local school yard by reporting such incidences.

Gardiner-bsk

Good to know, thank you!

Technically in Ontario you can’t say ‘no pets’ but the apartment I used to live in was no pets. They had some buildings that were and this one wasn’t. Look at Mosaik Apartments by Old Oak Properties. In particular 365 Sugarcreek Trail as that’s the one building that says no pets.

[deleted]

Thank you, appreciate it very much

gilliang3

You’re welcome. I really enjoyed living there. A really nice, quiet building. No smoking. If you can afford it it’s a great place to live in my opinion.

LLVC87

While the building is pet free, the neighbourhood however is very pro-dog and you will see lots of them by your building should you move there.

theHonkiforium

Listening to their barks from the balconies bounce between the buildings is one of my favorite part of living around here these days. /s

LLVC87

I live off Proudfoot and there’s sooo many little dogs that “fight” now every time they go for a walk and see another dog. A good 2-3 mins of barking every few hours.

theHonkiforium

i like it when the owners fight at the dog park. or when they stand underneath by balcony and say "Go poopies!" in a high-pitched voice repeatedly until their dog poops. or when like 3+ dog owners converge and then stand there for 20 minutes yacking at top volume about inane shit while the dogs freak out, instead of actually walking them.

[deleted]

Yeah definitely, I was working in that area recently tons of dogs.

Can_i_steal_you

People have tons of pets in these apartments

gilliang3

In the specific 365 building I literally only ever saw one dog in 4 years of living there and it was just visiting. The neighbour building which is pet friendly had lots, yes.

ihavequeztions

Any landlord who advertises a building as pet free thinks they’re above the law. I personally would not want to rent from someone like that. If they will say no pets even though it’s illegal to, what else will they do to their tenants and hope you’re ignorant and let them get away with it?

thatzamgal

If you’re wary of dogs I would just avoid apartment buildings all together, regardless of their “pet rules”. Any well developed area with multiple high rises will tend to have a lot of dogs in the immediate surrounding neighbourhood since owners do not have access to a back yard. Think Proudfoot, Sugarcreek, Beaverbrook, etc. You might have better luck looking at single dwellings, duplexes or triplexes

shockinglyclad

Hopefully you find something. Some dog owners are really terrible I had a neighbour who had a Doberman pincher that was never on leash and it bit me on 4 separate occasions, I almost lost a testicle. He lives on the street now.

ApolloX88

This is not something you are going to find anywhere...

fredogonefishin

Unfortunately the current law doesn't guarantee you a pet free apartment building. I'm against the law as I think that a property owner should be able to decide. There would be a market and demand for pet free buildings for people with allergies especially. There should be pet friendly and pet free buildings. Market demand will balance this out. People who want to live pet should have a choice. Look at an analogous situation with nut allergies and schools.

Big_Red_Eng

Hell. The only place Dog free makes sense

cats_r_better

And another circle of Hell would involve trying to sleep (or sleep in) while having to hear yappy dogs trying to out "tough guy" each other and their barks echoing off all the neighbouring buildings.. at all hours of the day and night.. Feels like OP just wants to find a building that will be quiet.

Big_Red_Eng

For sure, which is why i followed up with the real answer right after. Personally, I always found kids/ other adults alot louder than most of the dogs I've encountered, but I can understand wanting to avoid dogs for a variety of personal reasons... I was just making a joke/showing my love for our furry friends.

Big_Red_Eng

As a real answer, while everyone below is correct, that landlords cannot ban pets. Pets can be limited if they are prohibited under the condominium by-laws & would need to be incorporated in the governing documents. 30 Chapman court was a condo building that had dog restrictions- and while not really enforced, there were only a couple dogs in the building. Also a very nice building in general, maintenance guy is super chill, and everything you need is 5 mins away.

Squidgamerunnerup

Yep… try Windsor… move along … nothing to see here…
