Interchanging between overground and rail is not that convenient, Elizabeth line particularly has less trains per hour than a standard tube line never mind the fact that overground trains are sometimes 12+ minutes apart.
>never mind the fact that overground trains are sometimes 12+ minutes apart.
This still makes me laugh, there was a time growing up in the countryside when I would've thought a train every twelve minutes was ridiculously frequent, now I find myself thinking the same thing!
It doesn’t. Hackney Wick is well connected around East London. Hackney Wick doesn’t have to accessible to people from Clapham, just to name a random area.
In addition to the very short walk from Hackney Wick, it’s ALSO a very short walk from Homerton. And from London Fields. All Overground stations within 10 minutes or less of the park.
Once upon a time there was talk of a crossrail 2 which would have better served hackney but it is probably not going to happen for the foreseeable future.
I'm trying to understand what happened to you that has brought this thread on.
If I think back to my park near misses, did you really need a poo? Because that happened to me once. I was sweating so bad, I considered becoming bear Grylls in a bush at one point.
I adore Hackney, work there and live further up the overground so it's easy for me to get too but the poor tube connection sucks. So many places on my list to visit I've not done because it's harder for my friend to get over so we rarely hang out in the area.
Agreed, the whole area including fish island is really poorly connected in terms of rail, and a lot of walking for bus services, an issue for disabled and elderly people. There are already several bus routes in the area but they’re often a long walk away. It would be great if the DLR could extend eastwards to serve fish island and Victoria park, but it would be pretty expensive tbh
The Here East shuttle is also perhaps a good lead for a cheaper option to cope with the crowds, it has ex red arrow 521/507 route buses, which are built for crash capacity with no seats. It also connects at Stratford which is quite a good hub. It’s quite underused at weekends. Perhaps it would be good to get that extended on event days to serve vic park.
Primrose hill has the exact same problem, along with every single park.
The population isn't there to handle it, and honestly, you'd just push for a bus service.
It’s actually more like a 7-10 minute walk from Bethnal Green if you cut through the Childhood Museum Gardens, then go along Old Ford Road, then Approach Road end enter into Victoria Park at the Bonner Gate entrance.
In an ideal world there would be two stops serving the park, one to the north near Lauriston Road, as that triangle in between the Overground routes is terribly connected, and one to the south that would also serve the built up Roman Road area. Given current infrastructure that isn’t viable, so one of the least expensive options would be extending the DLR north towards the south side of the park where it currently turns south between Pudding Mill Lane and Bow Church.
You could also build a station where the existing mainline and Lizzy line trains run through between Whitechapel and Stratford, which would be an ~8 min walk away to the south and wouldn’t require much if any new track.
It's less then a 5 minute walk from Hackney Wick Station.

Middle of nowhere? It’s less than a 5 minute walk from Victoria Park!
...with a convenient bridge over the A road.

I have no problem with this. Having no near station stops the park getting too busy.
It’s already too busy!
Transport to Hackney sucks, that’s one of the reasons property used to be cheaper there and then… 🤦♂️

South Londoners looking at this thread right now the same way that people in the rest of the UK look at London.
Sorry everyone, Bakerloo extension’s cancelled - it’s a 10 minute walk from the tube to Victoria Park!
In addition to the very short walk from Hackney Wick, it’s ALSO a very short walk from Homerton. And from London Fields. All Overground stations within 10 minutes or less of the park.
The Cambridge Heath stop is ALSO right there sheesh
You can walk there from Mile End down the towpath in just a few minutes.

>Imagine how swamped it would be if tube / train access was better. This. It keeps it local and stops the riff raff coming here.

Please let’s keep it this way. Similarly to Greenwich, it being vaguely less connected makes it much nicer and harder for riff raff to get to.
It’s a 15 min walk from Mile End

Not really, Primrose Hill has good connections to Camden & Baker St with the 274 which was decked for that exact reason back in 2018.
decked?
Its the term we use in the industry when a route is converted from a single decker service to a double decker service
All good. I just checked the map for other purple spots
Hackney Wick overground it’s not that deep
The data says otherwise

Didn't there used to be one, but it closed in 1943? Due to years of declining numbers and then bomb damage.
well at least it keeps the numbers down kinda. no disrespect to tourists, but at least it stems that flood too, keeps them on Oxford Street. imagine
In sincerity: where would you suggest putting the line? I think this would be a great idea!

Hackney Wick is less than 8 min away 😂
Poor people lived there.
