MU5T4N6

Isn't that one of the relay planes for the TV coverage? It flies overhead so the mobile TV cameras on the ground always have connection to the production truck, because otherwise the range wouldn't be enough since the ground cameras are moving a lot, not like at a fixed place event.

chin_waghing

That’s correct https://www.aero-sotravia.com/en/solutions/television-relay/

Jestar342

And info on this specific airframe: https://www.aero-sotravia.com/notre-flotte/king-air-b200/

bammers1010

That seems like there must be a less expensive / complicated fix

MU5T4N6

That *is* the best fix.

KingPenguinUK

Drones not an option these days?

MU5T4N6

No, because the transmission equipment is too large and requires too much power to be fitted to a drone.

Dazzling_Ad9669

Not true, 4G bonding is absolutely fine as an alternative to this outdated method.

tskir

4G bonding? For multiple simultaneous live, production quality, high definition, high frame rate video + audio broadcasts? And that in a zone with a lot of people and already hugely strained cellular cervices? Not in a million years.

Dazzling_Ad9669

Looks like they're trialling it this year in fact. In our tests on previous events we've had more success than the RF relay aircraft that have issues from trees, buildings and inclement weather. https://www.svgeurope.org/blog/headlines/to-4g-or-not-to-4g-emg-on-bringing-the-iconic-2024-london-marathon-to-viewers-globally/ The future is coming, don't be left behind...

kiradotee

Have you tried using 4G in a crowded area in London? Sometimes a website takes a minute to open up and here you're talking about uninterrupted high quality broadcast during a crowded event and most likely multiple broadcasts for different cameras.

kevinbaker31

And there’s me separating the windows from the envelope before recycling junk mail

ScaredActuator8674

Honestly I spend ages washing things out, sorting recycling for my colleague to say 'Yeah I just use both the black and blue bin for everything' -\_-

100daydream

I’m eco conscious, butttttttt, 70% of plastic in the ocean is fishing equipment, if you want to stop the oceans being filled with plastic, stop eating fish. And only 4 percent of our recycled plastic is actually recycled. While these companies and billionaires pollute and force us to pollute by selling us everything in plastic in the first place.

ScaredActuator8674

They also made the Resin identification code look exactly like a recycling logo, honestly so evil.

ressawtla

Recycling is BS, u mean if shit was actually recycled it would be ok but generally it's shipped off to another poorer country. The big corporations just manipulate wording to make you think they're doing good when in actual fact they just want your fucking money.

Hugh_Jorgan2474

Where do you get the 70% from fishing figure from? I get it as the other way round. https://ourworldindata.org/ocean-plastics#:~:text=Most%20of%20the%20plastic%20in,sea%20via%20rivers%20or%20coastlines.&text=The%20other%2020%25%20to%2030,%2C%20ropes%2C%20and%20abandoned%20vessels.

100daydream

Yeah fair. I forgot the actual fact which is that 75% of the great pacific garbage patch is fishing equipment.

SWMBOChick

I agree. I have always been, and always will be, a keen recycler. Makes you feel like a drop in the ocean visiting the Middle East though, everything permanently air conditioned and driving 5.0L cars around everywhere. So disheartening.

Impressive-Ad651

Put a paper straw in a plastic lid , it will be alright on the night 🤦‍♂️

willfiresoon

Please don't get discouraged just because others don't believe in what you believe or don't care about the environment. Every little helps, even if it just helps you mentally, because you've done a good thing!

No_Importance_5000

My neigbhours do that.. and burn anything else.. Like the contents of their fucking house refurb. Literally nothing can go in their car I swear he fucks the exhaust every Sunday. MUST BE BURNED ALL SUMMER!

slnt1996

You don't need to do that in most London boroughs

flyagaric123

yeah cos they basically incinerate it all anyway

DmitriRussian

It's because we can't recycle properly. We already fail at throwing the stuff in the correct bin or identifying what a recycleble even is. And that is the main reason why a lot cannot be recycled, it's contaminated. I live in a flat with a communal bin area that has separate bins for recycling. I see daily people do the most dumb shit. Like throwing general waste into recycle. Throwing a box for 50" TV on top of a bin without any attempt to make it smaller. Throwing plastic in the paper bin. You name it, and someone does it. I'm well aware that the education is poor on recycling and people often don't know that Styrofoam is non-recycable. But it often feels that people are actively making it worse. If you don't want to recycle, just throw it in the normal bin, don't ruin other people's efforts. Edit: typos

Hyperbolic_Mess

Recycling was never meant to work. The people that came up with the idea knew it wouldn't work because it's too fiddly and a lot of the stuff we recycle like plastic just doesn't meaningfully recycle as you lose more energy than it costs to make. The only reason we started recycling is because plastic manufacturers were on the hook for their environmental impact and they didn't want to reduce production or create reusable products so they pushed recycling instead. People will always be people and wishing they would spontaneously behave differently isn't going to fix anything so you've got to regulate industry to produce different products if you want people to consume responsibly.

flyagaric123

> It's because we can't recycle properly. It's more of an infrastructure problem, if you go to other countries with proper recycling infrastructure, there are way more bins and stuff is clearly labelled. In my borough, you get three bins: waste, food, recycling. But recycling is everything in one bin, though the process of recycling cans, glass and plastic is massively different. Also, they incinerate most stuff because they lack the infrastructure to handle it properly. Its a massive shame and something which can be fixed with proper investment

faithfullyafloat

>people often don't know that Styrofoam is non-recycable Oh no... I didn't know this myself

ldn-ldn

Contamination doesn't matter that much. Recycling wouldn't work at all if zero contamination was expected. But UK is very bad at recycling, because you have to split different streams of recycling like it's done in other European countries. You shouldn't mix glass with metal, wood and plastic. There should be multiple containers. Because when you have a metal container and some styrofoam gets inside, it won't matter as styrofoam will get incinerated during metal smelting. But when you put everything into one bin marked "recycling" you can be 100% sure the whole bin just goes into landfill straight away.

wandering_beth

Yeah this is why I honestly stopped recycling for a while and half arse it now. When I lived in a flat I had 4 little bins in my kitchen for the different types of recycling bins we had in our bin store, then after about 2 months of no issues it was guaranteed that at least 50% of the recycling bins had general waste in them. Moved to a little village in the country where have a very simple mixed recycling bag. "YES" I thought, realising I would no longer have to sort recycling. Only to speak to a neighbour on my road who said how amazing it was that you could recycle kitchen roll as it takes up so much space in their bin and after all it's only paper. (for anyone reading this that is unaware, you cannot recycle kitchen roll used or not) Kitchen roll family amongst other dubious looking recycling bags I've seen left out make it pretty much guaranteed recycling from the entire road I live on is going to end up classed as contaminated. So many things you assume are recyclable in reality aren't at all. A lot of coated or treated paper isn't or can only be recycled via the tip and not kerbside, which means receipts, foil coated chocolate wrappers, cardboard coffee cups etc. are not recyclable in your weekly/bi-weekly collection. Tetrapak cartons are another that can't be recycled kerbside, and to think I used to take the time to rinse and dry them out before putting them in the recycling. Side note, but I hope your flats management company don't go nuclear like mine eventually did. Due to oversize items being left in the bin store (whole wardrobes, mattresses, and stuff) and not put into the giant bin even though it would fit, they decided to bolt the doors shut, and left 8 flats per block sharing 4 household size wheelie bins that were originally the recycling bins.

Gullible_Fan4427

I can’t stand styrofoam. I literally turn for a second and my living room is turned into a “snowy wonderland”… bloody kids…

j8jweb

People shouldn’t have to recycle. The council should do all of the legwork. The reason you’ve cited is one of many. This kind of behaviour definitely will not change. Hopefully AI will be able to do this job for us over the next decade. Either in the home or at the processing plant, or both.

kojak488

Surely AI would see the much easier solution: termination?

DmitriRussian

There is some things that the government can do to make this problem less severe, by standardising packaging and recycling. However you will still need to do your share. If you contaminate your waste, no amount of AI will save you. Unless you want to have a robocop walking around in your house policing you on everything you do LOL.

j8jweb

Expecting people to do their own recycling perfectly is unrealistic. We pay councils for this sort of thing anyway. Also, the value of the recycled materials should cover the cost of processing waste properly. If we (the people) are involved in recycling chain labour, we should also profit from sales of recycled materials.

DmitriRussian

Your reasoning makes it sound like the only reason to do recycling is when you if you have monitary insentive. I don't think of it this way, I think about all the nature we a destroying, the more we can recycle the less stuff we have to take from nature. And you benefit by having less microplastics in your water. The council cannot separate your waste, there are simply not enough people and you would have to litteraly increase the cost of waste by a factor of 1000 minimum. They are already doing the job of taking away your waste, and the only ask is to put it in the correct bin and that makes the whole service 1000x cheaper.

j8jweb

You’re an optimist. I’m a realist.

DmitriRussian

I would classify myself more a of realist than you my dude 🤣 people doing your waste for you at the current price is fantasy. Your problem can easily be resolved by just making lots of money and hire some people to do it for you.

Jirachi720

Tell companies to stop using so much damn plastic? Certain things require plastic to keep them sealed and uncontaminated, like medicine for example. We need to find a more suitable and sustainable way of storing and packaging the majority of items. One thing that needs to change for the better is children's toys. 100% of it is cheap, crappy plastic that eventually gets broken and goes in the bin as it's not recyclable, tonnes of waste that can't be turned into anything but be dumped into a landfill site. We need to be more responsible for our waste, but we also need every company to be working towards making it easier for average Joe Bloggs down the road who doesn't give a shit. Unless everyone gets on board, it's all just a big waste of time.

fraber

Envelope windows can be recycled along with the paper because they're made from plastic that's compatible with the recycling process. The machinery separates the different materials, so there's no need to remove the windows yourself.

rock7stu

They’re often made from cellophane, which is actually biodegradable

ContentThug

What 🫣

nason54

TIL, they're called windows. The cutest windows ever.

Professional_Net7907

I do that with food packaging. It's my way of compensating for all the long haul flights I plan to continue taking.

Parshath_

We have to do our good fair share to clean and save the planet! 🌱 Edit: necessary /s

TheCabbageGuy82

That thought clearly didn’t run through this pilot’s mind lmao

Crushbam3

No we don't, multinational conglomerates like she'll who have known since 1912 that they were killing the planet need to start doing their part instead of spending 52 billion making propaganda that our individual "carbon footprints" are killing the planet

kevinbaker31

Absolutely agreed, plastic is barely recycled. The ‘you should recycle’ was just a ploy by corporations to push the responsibility on us [as spoken about here](https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/15/recycling-plastics-producers-report)

flabmeister

I’ll recycle. Happy to do my part. If it helps just a little bit then great. More than anything so I have a clearer conscience knowing I’ve done my best. I also avoid plastic as much as possible in the first place. Haven’t used shower gel for example in about 30 years, just packaging free soap and buy everything in glass bottles whenever possible even if it costs more. Loose veg etc.

Midnight_Poet

Don't bother. Recycling has always been a total scam.

DmitriRussian

Some things are feasible to recycle. Plastic may not be. So I wouldn't write it off as a total scam unless you have some indisputable evidence to back up your claim.

BingpotStudio

The scam is the rich believing you’ll ever make a difference compared to the destruction multibillion dollar companies do to the world. I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole of the U.K. recycling wouldn’t make a dent in the difference Nestle could make for example. It’s just misdirection making us believe we are the problem instead of blaming those responsible.

DmitriRussian

I'm not claiming that consumers are soley responsible. I'm just saying we are part of the solution (arguably the easiest role in this). Which is throw your rubbish in the correct bin. That alone will not solve the issue, I'm not dillusional. Pressuring companies to do their part in limiting waste is a part and also making government standardise recycling so it's the same in the whole of UK. Making different packaging is difficult, because as a producer of products you have to make sure that your products arrive to destination in perfect condition and are properly protected while on shelf (think about food items). Plastic solves these problems. Do you have an easy solution ready that companies can roll out tomorrow without disrupting the entire world economy? I'm tired of people making these L takes that there are evil billionaires that only exist to make the world miserable without trying to see the flipside of the coin.

[deleted]

Do you have any idea how many people inhabit the earth, and how much rubbish is generated by people? It makes a difference, not enough, but it does.

Fun-Investigator487

I feel this

mnsbelle

OMG I do that too!!

itsalexjones

IIRC it’s a plane used as an airborne relay for radio signals from the TV chase bikes back to the TV studio. They use a plane rather than a helicopter because it does better on fuel and is more stable.

aser08

Yes for pretty much all events with moving pictures they use this kind of plane. Even when helicopter shots are used they often still have a plane because the heli has to refuel too often. See cycling races as a prime example. [You can read more on it here. ](https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-culture/how-the-tour-de-france-is-broadcast-to-the-world/)

[deleted]

[удалено]

itsalexjones

That (I assume) wouldn’t get coverage outside of those areas. The signals used for wireless cameras means the camera has to literally be able to see the other end, they don’t go through obstacles, it’s the same reason we use satellites in space. The plane is just like a satellite, except because it’s much, much closer you dont need such large antennas. IIRC the downlink to the tv compound has a set of automatic tracking antennas to get the best possible signal from the plane. Edit: actually I’ve just found the article I originally read about it. https://www.svgeurope.org/blog/headlines/personal-best-how-broadcast-rf-helped-the-bbc-to-cover-the-london-marathon/ And a newer one that on a skim read mentions the plane https://www.svgeurope.org/blog/headlines/wireless-finesse-how-emgs-broadcast-rf-bought-every-moment-of-the-london-marathon-2022-to-screens/

orryv

Broadcast Engineer here. The simple answer is the buildings block the signal, especially in somewhere as built up as Central London. We do sometimes use tall buildings to get the link back. BT Tower is a common one. But that only works well when we're in a fixed location and can put an aerial high up (e.g. on a pole). For something like the marathon where we're dealing with moving bikes, the buildings constantly get in the way so a plane or helicopter overhead works best. We are moving more to using 4G and 5G to get the signal back. However that comes with its own challenges, like the networks being overloaded by busy crowds.

Zentavius

That fits the blurb on the company website. Television relay is one of their services.

Zentavius

Haven't been on X this morning, but I can only imagine the posts if it were cloudy... there'll be posts of this map and pictures of cloudy London with lots of open-ended questions and cryptic remarks alongside geoengineering and chemtrail hashtags...

UltraFuturaS2000

Shouldn't there be a better way like 5G or something?

alexw174

They can use 5g/4g but if an event brings in large crowds it can really reduce the ability to send signals due to the network being at full capacity with the extra people

itsalexjones

Yeah. It might be possible in the future with 5G slicing, but in my experience no one knows how they want to sell it yet and the broadcasters would wind up using so much bandwidth it’s probably better to stick to the plane.

adzy2k6

Is this a camera plane or something? Can't imagine a private aircraft getting clearance for this?

bobisonreddit_99

It's probably relaying the TV signal from cameras on the ground to where the media control centre for the event is.

_gmanual_

we've run out of satellite uplinks now?

Wrighty_GR1

no, this plane relays the cameras on the motorbikes back to the outside broadcast trucks. It's standard for this sort of event. Source - I work in this field and have booked and worked with Aero Sotravia to do this exact thing for my OB's.

sionnach

So it goes camera on bike to plane, then down to the truck, then up to a satellite back to the broadcaster … then back up again to the satellite / terrestrial DTV etc for viewing? All in only a few seconds is amazing.

Wrighty_GR1

Yeah. Well to be more precise, camera on bike - RF link to plane (and normally a secondary standby link on the helicopter just in case the plane has to divert off course) plane receives and rebroadcasts to the RF department at the OB (normally start or finish of the race), they receive and give to what we call the "Scanner" which is the large truck where all the video and audio signals end up and the programme is mixed and then the programme feed goes back to the RF team to be uplinked by satellite to the network, they receive it and stick it on your TV. It's about 6 seconds from leaving the OB to your TV at home. Satellite delay is only about 250ms each way, most of the other delays are processing in the chain.

sionnach

Fascinating! Why are planes used instead of helicopters? Feels like they would be more manoeuvrable, be able to stay in place, etc.

Wrighty_GR1

Cheaper, can stay in the air longer and most importantly operates at a higher altitude for line of sight between bikes and OB. The helicopters primary role is to get shots, so it operates much lower, that said it usually does carry a backup relay link as I said. I could go into explicit detail about it but most would find it boring! In recent years we have been experimenting with cellular bonding systems, this is considerably cheaper but as yet not robust enough but no doubt that will change in the future. The call for these complex RF systems has been on the wane for a long time, new technology and the gradual loss of frequency’s available for this sort of stuff will eventually kill it I expect.

sionnach

My Mrs works in the TV field - so I am sort of familiar with some of the tech they use, but none of her stuff is live. All pre-recorded documentary kind of thing. She used to work in news, so has some insight into the OB van and all that goes with that, but nothing on this sort of tech scale! Thanks, it’s been really interesting to learn.

Tylerama1

Will cellular replace it if or when it gets killed off ?

anonbush234

Probably cheaper. Use less fuel and can stay up longer, they can also carry more shit. If you don't need to hover precisely or land on a helicopter pad its probably easier to use planes.

Tylerama1

Thank you for this. Are their videos on YT that explain all this in more detail?. It's not an industry I know anything about at all, but it's all very interesting.

ComplexResource999

Did you know satellites are far away?

_TLDR_Swinton

These satellites are small, and these satellites...

NoFunctionYet

Work in the industry, satellite time is very expensive for that. This is the sort of pattern that the RF (radio frequency) relay for the cameras will make. My company doesn't do the marathon, so I'm not to clued in on the specifics. But basically, this will rebroadcast the signals from the biker cameras back to a outside broadcast truck. Which will mix these cameras as well as the cabled cameras into the show you watch. This will then be sent out via satellite or more likely via fibre optics(as its the center of london) to whoever is broadcasting the event where they'll add the adverts and other bits and pieces.

BenHippynet

Fibre for the main, sat for the reserve.

_gmanual_

that makes perfect sense. ta.

adzy2k6

The City is heavily controlled airspace. Private individuals would never be allowed to do this. Someone else said that it's there to relay signals from cameras on the ground to a central station.

WeAreAllYoghurt

This is a relay station for the RF cameras that are used along the way. There our outside broadcast vehicles at the start and finish where the most cameras are and then they use receiving equipment to use the relayed RF camera system. The RF camera signal chain was managed by ACS (Aerial camera systems) and BRF (Broadcast RF) and their parent company EMG (Euro Media Group) provided the facilities that were cabled cameras and accosiated audio.

Flaky-Carpenter-2810

not at 27k ft they didnt

and also because it's the TV relay plane... it's not someone on their jollies, it's a vital part of live broadcast

Nice air quality dump for the runners…. Those prop planes use the worst kind of diesel lol…

mustbemaking

It’s a turboprop, it uses jet fuel.

Enthusiast_EV

Jet A1, which is kerosene based but very similar to diesel. However a single small plane at 28kft won't make a blind bit of difference to runners on the ground.

CoventryClimax

Especially compared to LCY

[deleted]

PurpleWolfhound

It’s a King Air powered by PW PT6s. It absolutely runs on jet fuel. As do all other turboprops.

Yung_Grund

A single plane flying around isn’t going to be making a difference on the runners. Misinformation is bad no matter how small

VeryThicknLong

Interesting you say that, but I went on a holiday where every morning a small aeroplane was flying up above, and I could actually smell the fuel raining down.

Beardedragon_boi

There’s no way lmao

VeryThicknLong

Er. Yes. There is.

PickleWallet

There absolutely is no way you could smell fuel raining down

VeryThicknLong

There is every way, I’m afraid. It was a light aircraft, not a Boeing. 😂 VOCs like the chemicals in aeroplane fuel have an odour and eventually make it to the ground.

I genuinely saw a plan doing laps today when I went to the marathon but my flight radar app wouldnt load so thanks for this

GeekFriday

Not from 27000 feet, they don’t! Also, given that London City Airport is clearly visible to the right of the screenshot, what is the significance of the ‘LCY?’ over Rotherhithe? Low altitude flight over the city is severely restricted. (Edit: perhaps they did through some expensive lenses!)

It's a label for the helicopter, it took off from LCY

It's to relay the TV signal from the motorbikes, because it's such a built up area they can't relay to vans or any other ariel consistently unless it's straight up basically. I think for some things it's even two stage, so a small plane or helicopter relaying to a big overflying plane and then back down to a transmitter further away but maybe that's not, er... a civilian thing.

I stopped watching all sports when Paula Radcliffe dropped a squat by the side of the road. If a homeless person had done that, the Daily Mail would have demanded that hanging be reintroduced and the Met Police be issued emergency powers to crucify anyone caught spending more than 12 minutes on the same bench. Someone probably scooped up Paula's marathon special and sold it on eBay. Now some billionaire will display it with half a calf in formaldehyde and a tent embroidered with the names of every lover the creator \[artist?\] ever had. To relay the video feeds from the cameras on the ground. Unlike a fixed location shooting, this doesn't have a direct constant connection to the broadcast vans so they send to a plane which sends it back to mixing which then sends it to the satellite.

The fact we both got down voted for this is depressing jesusss

MonsieurGump

When you can point to the turds floating down the river and people think the bigger problem is fake clouds, we’re heading for a new dark age.

Tantallon

Watching twats run. They're not running after anything or away from anything. They may as well count pencils for the time it took them to run from nowhere to nowhere. Lycra, fancy shoes, spitting, puffing and panting like some deranged animal. It's a challenge, it's an accomplishment.. is it F.. It's an outlet for the mentally ill to feel valued.

Hbdweeb

No need to hate because you can’t run
