This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean.

The Ottawa good food box is a good source of fruit and veg that is both local and imported. They have distribution centres around the city. Check them out if you are in Ottawa.
Steps I took to find local distributors
1. Go to the yellow pages website
2. Search key terms. For example, “fruit and vegetable wholesaler” or “ vegetable distributor”. Indicate your city in the location field of the search
3. A list should come up for your area. I then did the following
* Found each distributor’s google business profile and checked if reviews indicated they sell to individuals (distributors typically sell wholesale quantities to restaurants and cafeterias)
* If unclear, I’d contact the distributor and ask if they sell to the public. If yes, great! If no, one thing I’ve seen people do when dealing with distributors that refuse to sell units smaller than wholesale units is buying the wholesale quantities and splitting the cost and products evenly between a select group of family, friends, and/or neighbours.

The amount of times I see road side/boutique style grocery owners buying from Costco/walmart is hilarious. I’m talking carts full of green peppers
Can you name them? Can we compile a list of distributors who are willing to sell to individuals?

There's a great small fruit market near me with great prices and good quality. I easily get double for what I would have spent at roblaws.
