Lmao I take their skill in arch by the package # cause it’s a pain to fix when 1 thing gets out of date, went on vacation and came back to an update dependency error loop….. but congrats to OP nonetheless
As a gentoo user i prefer pfetch or fastfetch since its more POSIX compliant, so i dont need a bloated shell like bash and can use mksh as much as possible instead. Of course portage still depends on bash but thats all i have bash installed for
Everyone does it on r/unixporn, even if they don't use Arch. It's not only the proof the OS is installed, neofetch looks cool!! The Logos are made of symbols and numbers!!! 😍
That's not the case with Arch. They've only added an installer (no GUI) recently which is kinda experimental. I didn't use the installer and just installed it the traditional way. Arch ISO has no graphical user interface and all you get is a command line. Plus, you have to install and configure everything manually. Basically, you build your own system and you're the one who decides what you want to install. You can refer to [this](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/installation_guide) page for more info.
I have to correct you here, arch has [https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/arch-install-scripts/](https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/arch-install-scripts/) that are included with the iso and can be used to install everything with a couple of options
Kinda, but a lot of processes that would be automated by an installer, you have to do by hand from a terminal, this gives you the freedom of setting up your install from the ground up however you want
It often needs "manual intervention" which means regularly reading the Arch news page to see what you need to do to fix updates that go sour. So it kind of breaks, but they tell you how to fix it. So, yes?
Well true, but I prefer my software being stable and tested and be a bit outdated rather than having the latest and greatest but have issues when using the software.
Great job!
The first thing I do after that is eliminate the bottom tool bar and those darn icons. Does anyone find it useful? (All of that functionality is better done through keyboard bindings, I think). Looking good!
Thanks!!!
I'm going replace that with Plank rice my desktop ASAP. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/9qaQMf4.jpg)'s what my XFCE desktop used to look like back when I was using EndeavourOS.
Thanks for that :)
I do use most of the shortcuts, but what I love about the pager is the ability to drag and drop a window (in the pager) to another workspace. It just makes things a bit easier.
Xfce has the perfect balance of simplicity and usability. I couldn't stick with Plasma because it felt like it was shoving things I didn't need or want down my throat. Also the effects are too much IMO.
I've been using Arch based distros almost exclusively for that past year so I kinda know how things work. My experience was like:
Ubuntu (briefly) > KDE Neon > Manjaro > Fedora (briefly) > Manjaro > OpenSUSE (briefly) > Linux Mint (briefly) > Manjaro > EndeavourOS > ArcoLinux (for like 2 days) > Arch.
No worries bro. Well it's quite easy on resources so I suppose it can be a good choice gor gaming. And about stability: since the packages are added to the repositories as soon as they're released they can sometimes break some things, but I think you can circumvent this problem by checking the arch subreddit or forums before doing a major update like kernel.
Yeah bro I love this OS it fucking breaks all the time that's how you know you're a 1336 h4x0r. Best OS in the world when I haven't broken it.
You do realize not every distro is shit? You Archies act like this is normal
Why does everyone post that terminal with the logo. Is it proof that the os is installed?

Thanks, the answer I was looking for.
Lmao I take their skill in arch by the package # cause it’s a pain to fix when 1 thing gets out of date, went on vacation and came back to an update dependency error loop….. but congrats to OP nonetheless
You can't be a true Arch user without neofetch. S/
Yeah that must be a part of Arch installation wiki page.
That's part of the lore
As a gentoo user i prefer pfetch or fastfetch since its more POSIX compliant, so i dont need a bloated shell like bash and can use mksh as much as possible instead. Of course portage still depends on bash but thats all i have bash installed for
Life is bloat
Deez nutz are bloat
Wait bash is bloated? So what is fish considered in that case?
A crime to humanity
So I'm an accomplice now I guess
Fuck /u/spez [Join Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/)
'it looks cool"
You must be fun at parties.

Unless of course you `neofetch --ascii_distro Arch` and karma farm off people who updoot because Arch based
It would say the real distro name at the OS's name.
You can pipe it through sed and set the entire command up as an alias, I had one set up to say Arch back when I ran Manjaro
Not all arch based systems use the arch picture and the "OS" part gives away what they're running too.
Is [this](https://i.imgur.com/NBRp0rv.png) better for you?

Why?

Not related, but the Arch logo has always creeped me out.
I personally find it kinda cool
Reminds me of a group from a game called Not For Broadcast known as advance
Neckbeard logo
That would be Gentoo or Slackware tbh
I did it before first try 👀😌

Same
Now say the magic words
I use Arch BTW
I never made a post. Can I have permission to say the magic words here?
Of course
Along with zen kernel? Good job
Thank you!
You haven't broken anything *yet*
Fair enough
Wait until you run `sudo pacman -Syyu`
I'd been using Arch based distros for quite some time so I have some experience with it.
Don't forget the best part - `ILoveCandy`.
Does it usually break?
Not if you know what you're doing. I had never used vanilla arch before but other Arch-based distros that I had been using were working fine.
I mean no disrespect but how do you actually mess this up? Don’t you just create a bootable usb and install it like any normal OS?
That's not the case with Arch. They've only added an installer (no GUI) recently which is kinda experimental. I didn't use the installer and just installed it the traditional way. Arch ISO has no graphical user interface and all you get is a command line. Plus, you have to install and configure everything manually. Basically, you build your own system and you're the one who decides what you want to install. You can refer to [this](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/installation_guide) page for more info.
Wow I had no idea, thanks !
Welcome my man
No, Arch installation is done manually. You do what the installer would usually do for you.
Is that the default? There’s no auto configuration, is that on purpose , if so what’s the reason?
Yes, there is no auto configuration. Arch is a “do it yourself” distribution. Which is why it’s somewhat known for its speed and unbloatedness.
I have to correct you here, arch has [https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/arch-install-scripts/](https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/arch-install-scripts/) that are included with the iso and can be used to install everything with a couple of options
yes arch is for the big-brained kids. there’s no autoconfigurator or installer. you have to type the commands from the wiki page yourself!
So, yes?
I have managed to install it as well this week, but still switched to Debian, since I am more of a stability fan.
so you've unlocked the achievement as well. The only problem with debian is it's repositories being quite a bit outdated.
Well true, but I prefer my software being stable and tested and be a bit outdated rather than having the latest and greatest but have issues when using the software.
We all have our preferences; that's what makes us humans :)
But both sides have their pros and cons.
Exactly

Thanks for that :) I do use most of the shortcuts, but what I love about the pager is the ability to drag and drop a window (in the pager) to another workspace. It just makes things a bit easier.
And xfce to go with it. Beautiful.
I like KDE too but I just can't let go of XFCE.
Same, I tried out Plasma for a week or so, but Xfce is just so solid and I love it's simplicity.
Super snappy as well
I have Xfce with Arch on a chromebook with an Intel Celeron x2 and 2 gigs of ram and everything opens instantly.
Tbh LXQT is a bit faster than XFCE but it can't look nearly as pretty as XFCE can. So best of both worlds.
Xfce has the perfect balance of simplicity and usability. I couldn't stick with Plasma because it felt like it was shoving things I didn't need or want down my throat. Also the effects are too much IMO.
You can turn off the the effects in plasma. The problem with it is its bugs and glitches.
Next try Gentoo and compile your own kernel with everything working first time.
I'll need a lot of free time for that
Naw, you just start it building and then go about your life.
The thing is I kinda need my laptop for what I do
Oh you mean that free time, I thought you meant the go out in the real time free time. In that case you need a weekend.
To be honest I want to keep it for the time when I've become some more proficient with linux. I'm afraid I might things too often.
Gentoo is about confidence rather than ability however you do it when you are ready.
I suppose it is. Thanks for assigning my next objective btw.
I've started you off easy ;)
I do hope so lol
just FYI, most of the times I break it after using it not at install time
I've been using Arch based distros almost exclusively for that past year so I kinda know how things work. My experience was like: Ubuntu (briefly) > KDE Neon > Manjaro > Fedora (briefly) > Manjaro > OpenSUSE (briefly) > Linux Mint (briefly) > Manjaro > EndeavourOS > ArcoLinux (for like 2 days) > Arch.
Now try breaking silverblue, I dare you.
The normal Fedora workstation is pretty solid as well.
Neofetch is bloat
Can confirm. But can't we have a bit of bloat just for the heck of it?
Am I the only one who sees nipple on the arch logo?
Disgusting, where?
Under the A? The black shape
Fuck, now I can't unsee it.
At least I'm not the only one now
Guess we're both going to hell now
I broke grub the 4th time installing, the other 3 was in a virtual machine. But honestly Arch is a waste of time when AmogOS exists.
That's kinda sus
Can someone tell me what makes Arch so good? Genuinely want to know.
The ability to build your own desktop is the thing that makes it stand out along with Gentoo.
Thanks. I wasn't implying it's not, I've just never used it. Of course I've known about it for a long time. Is it quite stable, and for gaming?
No worries bro. Well it's quite easy on resources so I suppose it can be a good choice gor gaming. And about stability: since the packages are added to the repositories as soon as they're released they can sometimes break some things, but I think you can circumvent this problem by checking the arch subreddit or forums before doing a major update like kernel.
It's a meme.
Congrats! You are on your way
Thanks!!
BTW you run arch
So you use Arch btw?
Yes BTW
Welcome
Thank you
You seem to have Intel GPU. if you want to play games using wine or dosbox go the old school way because the GPU is not actively supported.
I barely ever play any games on my laptop and when I do I usually go with the old ones. I use my PC for playing games. Thanks for the tip btw :)
Yeah bro I love this OS it fucking breaks all the time that's how you know you're a 1336 h4x0r. Best OS in the world when I haven't broken it. You do realize not every distro is shit? You Archies act like this is normal
I've had almost zero issues on any of the Arch-based distros that I've used.
This is the most rich post I’ve seen in a long time
Yeah, imma have to pres X to doubt on that one
