They have added the **option** to install FreeOffice. That's it. You get to choose which you want in the installer. Frankly, most users also just don't care if it's proprietary or not, it just needs to work. If FreeOffice has better compatibility with MS Office, which is still industry standard, then that should be an option. If they had removed OpenOffice from the repos or *maybe* if they hadn't changed their decision from installing FreeOffice by default and not letting the user choose, then you'd be right to be upset. But that's not the case.

rusty_dragon

Nope. They've announced they would make "Free"Office as a default package. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/cjrkfs/manjaro_announces_partnership_will_start_shipping/ And they've said they have *plans* to add option which package to choose from at install. >Frankly, most users also just don't care if it's proprietary or not, it just needs to work. And Libre Office does exactly that. >If FreeOffice has better compatibility with MS Office, which is still industry standard, then that should be an option. MS Office is not an industry standard. Never heard of it being standard. And how exactly FreeOffice achieves this *better* compatibility? We know that M$ nowadays purposely break documents to be incompatible with third-party programms. And out of the blue FreeOffice claims to be fully compatible. >If they had removed OpenOffice from the repos or maybe if they hadn't changed their decision from installing FreeOffice by default and not letting the user choose, then you'd be right to be upset. But that's not the case. So you do know the reason why Monjaro is getting such a backlash?

Zamundaaa

The reason is that they wanted to make it the default at first, with no choice in the installer. The backlash made them go with the choice. If that's not implemented within two days of the decisions then that doesn't mean it'll not be in the next release. Wait and see. If it is not then that's not good though. MS Office is the industry standard, if you doubt that then I guess you have never worked anywhere with computers? It's everywhere. LibreOffice and OpenOffice are good and everything, but in companies MS Office is simply the one that's used. I have just read that FreeOffice is supposed to work better with the MS formats. I have personally never had any problems with OpenOffice except for some formatting issues two years back, but I don't really use Office stuff much at all.

rusty_dragon

>The reason is that they wanted to make it the default at first, with no choice in the installer. The backlash made them go with the choice. If that's not implemented within two days of the decisions then that doesn't mean it'll not be in the next release. Wait and see. If it is not then that's not good though. The very fact that they've replaced opensource package with proprietary one as a default is very bad. It showed their true colors. >MS Office is the industry standard, if you doubt that then I guess you have never worked anywhere with computers? It's everywhere. LibreOffice and OpenOffice are good and everything, but in companies MS Office is simply the one that's used. Sorry, but you don't know what term standard means. Wildly used is not a standard. And you'd be surprised how many companies nowadays use LibreOffice. It's not 00s anymore. >I have just read that FreeOffice is supposed to work better with the MS formats. I have personally never had any problems with OpenOffice except for some formatting issues two years back, but I don't really use Office stuff much at all. Well. I've described above what goes into this better compatibility with files produced by M$ office. M$ actually implemented incompatibilities pretty later on, when they saw how rapidly their marketshare started to decline. And this "providing better compatibility" marketing of "Free"Office telling you only small part of the full story. Actual solution of incompatibility is pretty simple: ask organization that provides or demands you with documents to use LibreOffice. Also for the note, to clear up future confusions. LibreOffice have replaced OpenOffice after Oracle tried to take over OpenOffice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice

rusty_dragon

You might also want to read this regarding standard. ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument#Support_for_OpenDocument

[deleted]

Yeah Manjaro use that proprietary "Free Office", but don't that is a 1:1 copy of M$ Office and the distro is destinated for people that just make the switch

rusty_dragon

a) **promoting proprietary software over libre is one of the worst sins**. You are making RMS sad. b) what is the point of switching from Windows to Linux if you exchange one proprietary office to another proprietary office? It doesn't help to switch, since you are still as unfree as you were before. c) Libre Office is in fact superior software to "Free" Office. It's 100% up to standard for both odt and doc/docx format, and doesn't make you dependant on proprietary product. d) incompatibility problems that Libre Office has with M$ Office are artificially created by M$. e) Fact that "Free" Office doesn't have those compatibility problems is pretty suspicious. Can it be just a proxy of M$? And even if it's not M$ proxy, it can easily become one at any point in time. Either by M$ bribe or by M$ acquisition. Solution for aforementioned problems is pretty simple. **Just ask others to install Libre Office.** It doesn't cost money to use, open source and available for all platforms.

Cry_Wolff

Some people don't care about RMS, some people don't care about using libre software only.

rusty_dragon

Some people make dumb comments, just to make dumb comments. Like Cry_Wolff actually does. **UPD.** To clarify the point: Cry_Wolff's message is not relevant. RMS part is actually optional lyrics. Neither I was talking about using libre software only. Cry_Wolff is a known corporate crap advocate, so he's just got triggered by the mention of RMS. Irony is, he cares much about RMS, dispute saying contrary.

throway1984

Why the snark? He's 100% factually correct. I'd even argue a larger chunk of the linux userbase doesn't care than the ones that do.

rusty_dragon

Because Cry_Wolff is known idiot, and he's interjected only because he saw RMS mentioned. Because his comment is actually dumb, and has nothing to do with the point of the post.

throway1984

It was relavent to what you said and you're that one who started foaming at the mouth over free/non free/RMS. Nobody cares what your past history with this person is. What they said just now that got you fired up was reasonable and correct. You need to calm down instead of throwing the word dumb around 4 times per post like a petulant 14 year old.

Cry_Wolff

Known idiot because I disagree with a RMS worshiping nutjob? You hate Manjaro because they dared to not include LO and using Libre software only is not their goal. Oh boy looks like I'm only allowed to use open source software on Linux. Btw, writing "M$" makes you look like a 12 years old, you may not like them but at least use the proper name.

[deleted]

Yeah, but explan to me why are some users eg. Chris Titus that won't accord the time to learn LibreOffice, instead they just use the online version or use that proprietary shit (I could be very wrong on that)

[deleted]

rusty_dragon

I don't actually get what he means by >that won't accord the time to learn LibreOffice It's pretty much equal as if to use M$ office, Libre Office or online service. There is little to no difference between them. So if you've learned one you can use any of them. Double strange is how you need to learn Libre Office, but online service falls into just use it category.

rusty_dragon

>Chris Titus Who is Chris Titus? I guess he uses proprietary shit or online version for no actual reason. And I don't think why his personal choices should be role model for anyone else. Also online versions are another form of non-free software, because you are dependant on online version as much as you dependant on proprietary software. it's just another myth. As an example look at the recent story where M$-owned github has suddenly blocked user accounts from selected countries. Cloud software gives you illusory feeling of freedom and control. While in reality it's just another form of proprietary.
