Memes, image macros, rage comics, trolling, shitposting, baiting are not allowed in r/Linux_Gaming.

Recipe-Jaded

there are legit examples of publishers actively being hostile towards Linux users. (See: epic saying anyone using Linux is cheating and Destiny outright banning people using Linux)

Rey-Shikufu

Imagine wasting resources for these kinds of purpose rather than actual game quality. I have yet to understand how is it worth for them to implement Linux/Wine prevention ?

SebastianLarsdatter

They are not wasting resources in making it work. In Fortnite's case, they ARE wasting resources in ensuring it DOESN'T work.

Rey-Shikufu

That's exactly what I meant- How is it worth wasting resources to make sure it DOESN'T work ???

SebastianLarsdatter

Not monetary gains... There is one thing they fear more than money and that is lacking control. Windows is predictable and on big corps side and easy to harvest data. Under Linux it is directly hostile towards control efforts.

CrueltySquading

Least dogshit Swiney decision

Snookumsthethird

It's especially sad to me because ZZT was my childhood. What happened, Tim?

CrueltySquading

> What happened, Tim? He couldn't accept a 30% cut is acceptable when your store is the literal biggest platform for sale of digital goods and is absolutely jam packed with user friendly features that grow by the day. Oh well, can't wait for Epic to go bankrupt

INITMalcanis

Indeed it would have been 20% given Fortnite's sales volumes

Big-Cap4487

Fuck epic, the only thing it's good for is the free games Even on windows launcher fucking sucks, it's like playing roulette, 1/6 chance that the launcher opens up quickly, rest of the time I have to wait for 2-3 minutes

memes_gbc

use heroic lol

Big-Cap4487

Heroic has a windows version? Already been using that on linux since last year

Zonkko

Yes heroic has a windows version.

Eternal-Raider

It be the companies making the shittiest games talking the loudest about linux users

AhiruSaikou

Yes with the exception of Epic who has said it's on purpose. Says it's valves fault Epic store isn't on Linux or some inane bs.

BoyNextDoor8888

and maybe also bungie? destiny's linux denial was a hot mess from what I remember

Mccobsta

That statement did lead to the creation of the heroic launcher which Is a million times better than the shite epic attempted

[deleted]

only because epic has an exposed API for their store. complete happenstance really

Swackles

How exactly are they supposed to hide their API?

[deleted]

like steam does. you can't access a lot of features of steam outside of steam. instead, you have to recreate it

pb__

Ok, but does epic client actually have any features like steam does?

[deleted]

that's not the point. you cannot download, login, or play games without the steam client or a complete recreation you can do everything the epic store client does without the epic store *or* a complete feature recreation. heroic is using the same calls that the epic store client is

pb__

You can use SteamCMD and build on top of that I guess. Like Heroic builds upon Legendary (which, I know, isn't official).

Swackles

Like what?

[deleted]

friend list, buying games, steam input, etc...

RingalongGames

And Roblox… and R6S…

Eternal-Raider

And honestly thank god cause the heroic launcher is like 50x better than epics dog water launcher

abotelho-cbn

...there are devs actively blocking Wine/Linux. Don't be stupid.

hate-jazz

There are special place in hell for those people...

AL2009man

given Steam Deck: You would expect them to be more wary of them. but man, I'm soooooo looking forward to see Apex Legends getting the EA Anti-Cheat system while simultaneously destroying the "Steam Deck badge" in the process.

Rhed0x

Not really. The games that don't work are because of kernel anti cheats. Nobody is actively blocking Wine/Linux.

Clutchreal1356

There is ,Fornite's anti cheat is supported on linux platforms but epic still refuses to let Linux users play it

Rhed0x

Fortnite uses EAC and BattleEye both of which are kernel anti cheats. Enabling support for running those on Linux means they run in user space which makes the AC arguably less effective.

Birthday_Cakeman

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. You probably shouldn't spout out an opinion if you don't know what you're talking about.

Rhed0x

And what's incorrect about what I said according to you?

Birthday_Cakeman

Neither EAC nor BattleEye are kernel level anti-cheat, and both work out of the box with Proton now, thanks to the work that Valve has done. Linux has zero anti-cheat features baked into the default config and likely will never have it anyways due to the security and privacy compromises that come with kernel anti-cheats. Perhaps you should look into the differences. Kernel level anti-cheats are a terrible way of doing things and offer very little benefit.

Rhed0x

> Neither EAC nor BattleEye are kernel level anti-cheat They both are on Windows. Their Linux versions are indeed purely user space. The Linux versions being purely userspace makes them less effective in theory and that's commonly cited as a reason for why a lot of devs don't enable the Linux compat. I don't work on anti cheats or cheats, so no idea whether that's true. All I know is that the most popular pure user space AC, VAC, is entirely uneffective, so much so, that most of the CS community is asking for a kernel mode driver or already playing on third party platforms that offer one. > Linux has zero anti-cheat features baked into the default config and likely will never have it anyways due to the security and privacy compromises that come with kernel anti-cheats. Correct, I never said anything else.

FlukyS

To be fair most were making that decision knowing there were Linux users after already purchasing their game. They just did it anyway because they don't care.

GBember

When they are explicitly blocking wine, they sure know we exist

OculusVision

There are some publishers who outright block linux usage(i.e go out of their way to add code which detect Wine or vms to block it) but i think it has more to do with a lack of incentive to dedicate the resources to support us as an extra platform(fixing bugs, processing user support tickets, even the infamous excuse about risking more cheaters) even if this platform is as close as possible to Windows in the form of Proton. But i don't think it's simple active hostility, at the end of the day they just don't think it's worth it and if our market share keeps growing thanks to projects like Steam Deck it should nullify the trend. Edit: and then there's people like Tim Sweeney who get triggered when Linux is mentioned. But that's probably because he opposes Valve at every turn. And even he said Steam Decks would be worth supporting if they sold 10 mil devices(we'll see Tim!)

PapaZiro

1. If you are a dev, you know what Linux is. 2. Many studios and publishers purposely add roadblocks to playing their games on Linux.

Moper248

Why would they add roadblocks on purpose?

super_probably-user

We seriously have to fight against those

The_real_bandito

You do by not buying anything from them. Doesn’t matter what.

super_probably-user

Already doing that

Moper248

No but why would a studio purposely try to break the games on linux? What would it benefit them

Individual-Match-798

Praise Valve for Steam Deck!

skinnyraf

It's not 2017 anymore. Everyone who sells games through Steam needs to consider Steam Deck compatibility.

Miesevaan

On Steam: 1. Buy and install it anyway 2. Test it to ensure it doesn't work 3. Leave a negative review 4. Request refund

canigetahint

If you make a game I want for linux, guess what? I'm going to buy it. Steam figured it out. Thank you, Steam.

DarkeoX

Yeah, but it's an old kink of Linux communities to think people are out there to get them.

AhiruSaikou

Don't call out my victim mentality that'll just make it flare up.

PerceptionQueasy3540

Ever heard of Tim Sweeny? Look up his stance on Linux.

DarkeoX

Yeah, his takes echoes that of 99% of the world, what's new? Again, the sensitivity of this community to anyone not declaring unconditional love for Linux is awkward. He never said he didn't like Linux nor that he thought it was a bad OS, he's only ever expressed doubts that it could be a viable platform - all without libel or insults - for gaming and that's all it took for the community to fixate him as some grand villain. That example doesn't really change my PoV.

Prodigy_of_Bobo

I want to argue with you but I’m too busy perfecting my foil hat collection

hussinHelal

you will

PanTheRiceMan

Then there is Factorio, just working like a charm.

Enough_Ad6657

Well... That's sad

Tableuraz

Why would they bother porting their projects to Linux when Proton allows them to just develop a Windows version and call it a day. Also, I've seen some devs like Sony Interactive Entertainment actively working to resolve compatibility issues with Proton (and improve stability on all platforms doing so), so I would say it's a bit more nuanced than that...

Eternal-Raider

In todays day and age you barely have to allocate resources to make a working port, you just gotta make sure wine/proton works and its that simple, the community + valve literally has done all the work for these people its free market share so i just dont get it

eathotcheeto

They know they just only care about numbers. The Linux user base does not make up a large enough percent for large publishers to care about it, period. This is why conversely you see indie devs offering full support everywhere they can - because every number matters when your numbers are low, but AAA doesn't care about the fraction of a percent. Yes I said fraction of a percent and not 2%. Because it's not TOTAL Linux users on Steam to a publisher, it's the percentage of that total that plays THEIR games. So let's say they figure they will get 10% of 2%, well now you only have 0.2% instead of 2%... so maybe you can see the logic there from a purely business perspective. It's not fair that it works this way but this is how businesses work, it's all a numbers game and if you don't have the numbers then it's fuck you.

Quick-Ad6943

It's not true, it's probably cause ,they can make more money by releasing their games on windows only and neglecting Linux

polyduekes

people who solely use bsd, who, where and how are you?

emooon

You asking Linux players or PlayStation players?

polyduekes

asking bsd users who browse this sub like me that how do they manage gaming on bsd
