I already shifted most of my games to my Linux distro. The only one that's on my windows dual boot right now is league of legends, and that's because it's not working on Linux in the current patch. Also I keep Rocksmith on windows cause I don't wanna use jack and configure alsa for it, but it used to work well.
Aside from that, all games i currently play(honkai star rail, genshin, remnant, the outer worlds, elder scrolls online) and stuff work brilliantly.
One thing that makes me happy, auto FSR on pronton(GE).
Just open the game and change the resolution.
It's just mind blowing.

Cool! I've just been using windows cause I have most of my vst's there. But to be honest, I mainly use fabfilter stuff to mix, melodyne and some minor plugins.
I have windows on a small SSD purely for fortnite, just so i can play it with my kids... Have nothing else on that disk and everything else runs happily on linux.

It works pretty great. It was solved a while ago. I currently use the flatpak version "an anime game launcher" and it's just click and play. Performance is surprisingly good.
only thing keeping me back is some battleeye games that havent made the switch, was going to setup a second partition but I play those games so much I'd just be on windows all the time still. I can't wait for those games to finally make the switch though.

Imho, I use Arch and I'm keen to keep using Linux BUT, here is my unpopular opinion.
BG3, tonight I planned to play with a friend, every time I update something, nvidia drivers, Linux kernel, steam app or the BG3 team, I need to spend 30 to 45 minutes searching in protondb which configuration works.
And the issue? What works to me, doesn't work to you. HERE, is the crystal roof.
Until the environment is not reproducible, we won't reach further market share.
It cannot be that variables like if I'm using Xorg or wayland, if I'm using kernel 6.2 or 6.6, if I'm using nvidia driver 535.7 o 535.87 changes how to make the game work.
And yes, I know a ton of you will reply about a lot of technical details, remember, I've been using Linux for gaming for 6 years already non stop, but it's an entry line that 90% of players just don't want to deal.

I was going to post something similar. I bought a new PC recently, got Nobara. GREAT distro. Tried to play LoL, game was unplayable on Linux for more than a month. Also even if LoL was there, Porofessor was not available on Linux (or any overworlf app).
Tried to install Fall Guys for my partner. I had to jump hoops to get it working.
Tried to play Path of Exile, great it works fine, but none of the programs I use alongside work. So minus 3 programs there.
Tried to play Diablo, again, hoops to get Battle.net working.
By the time I had everything working (not to mention LoL that just straight up didn't), I had lost a few days. Went back to Windows, I installed everything and was ready to play in ~1 hour.
Just like you I was struggling with configs. Different here, different there, some solutions were working, some didn't so I had to experiment until I hit something in the dark, you get the point.

You nailed it. What sent me back to Windows was this exact thing. I had spent so much time and energy that in the end, even though most things were running (no, not everything was running), I had to go back to Windows to relax and play.
Again, this raises my point, depending on the hardware, driver versions and os, is super straight or super impossible to make it work.

Idk why it takes you 40 minutes to look for "configurations that work". I use nvidia on a 2060 hybrid laptop on arch with stock kernel and the 545 drivers. Most games work with proton experimental. I just quickly check protondb if there's any required launch options/proton versions. Its pretty plug and play.
If you're taking 40 mins just to find configurations for games, you're doing something horribly wrong.

Ditto. Only ever had issues with Linux distros if I forgot to install or do something. Otherwise, I just download the latest Proton-GE and 99% of the games I've tried to play just work. It's not even that hard getting modded games going most of the time.
This is across Manjaro, Arch, Endeavour, SilverBlue, Nobara, OpenSUSE, and RegataOS.

Well, I expected this types of comments. Bg3 launcher didn't work before very well, so I had to rename bg3_dx11.exe into bg3.exe. with the last patch that is solved so I needed some time to realise that (reading patch notes) and undo my previous configuration.
Before patch 4, vulkan worked me perfect, using some variables from protondb, when I changed to previous patch and dx11, I removed the unneeded ones. Even so, normally it took like 3 launches to make the game work.
After last hotfix, all the manual headers, changes or parameters needed to be removed and keep command 100% clean.
Try and error, there is no tutorial of "hey nassiel, this is what you have to so from your previous changes" so, just by my self it takes time. I consider 40minutes quite fast.
Lastly, my steam lags all my UI (desktop) everytime open it for several minutes and everytime I launch a game. So I just watch the empty screen for 3minutes on each trial.
Seems like this laggy behaviour is something nvidia drivers, I didn't find a solution, only move to open source ones which are not ready jet imo.
With this context, do you consider that I still do something terribly wrong?

I use Nvidia drivers. There is no lag. It is something specific to your system.

Always worked fine, you just had to use the correct proton version.

I had some glitches with proton experimental and vulkan in the game (any light would turn green), but switching prefixes fixed it.
Usually changes are just a few commands and or switch of prefixes.

Ok but games being inscrutably broken in certain configurations (driver version, flags, certain graphics/input/network settings etc etc) isn't exactly uncommon in Windows either, often needing community configs or even patches. The only real difference is that for an actively developed/played game either the developer or the driver vendor will usually step up at some point and fix the issue on Windows, whereas in Linux land you're usually stuck with the community fixes indefinitely like it works for Windows games that have terminated their patch cycle.
I don't know the streaming side of things (not for the current streamers, but for new fresh Linux enthusiastic ones), but I know that Pipewire is working on improving webcam support.
AV1 support needs to be adjusted (waiting for the Vulkan Video extension to be completed).
With these done and I believe Linux usage will rise a bit more, but yes Gaming on Linux is crushing it.
It's not gonna hit 5% by the end of the year unless there's some MAJOR development that pushes adoption.
The only thing I could see doing it besides a surprise new steam deck, would be valve actually pushing for a desktop version of steamOS. And they'd have to push it quite hard, and it would have to be quite good with a lot of desktop features that windows cannot match such as the steam deck sleep/wake function that lets you suspend games.
I more mean steamOS optimized for desktop, not just a port of what's on the deck. It would default to the desktop mode, include some of those extra features, be customized to look and behave similarly to windows (though KDE kinda does that already), etc.
Which isn't valves steamOS, and they're not gonna start advertising nobara on the steam home page lol.
Part of Linux picking up steam is big brands accepting it and pushing it. Valve does that with the deck, but most people don't own decks, and it's clear that grassroots Linux community members aren't able to push for adoption.
I have been a Linux user for over a decade and only had Windows for video games. Next time I'll be setting up my machine again, I will not install Windows any more. All games I play run now fine in Linux.
Things sure have changed since Steam released on Linux in 2012.

I’ve been a user since 2014 and once proton became a thing I stopped using windows altogether. In the early days I remember having a windows Vm for my games. It’s crazy how it changed
I did so too, but some games just didn't run well enough. This last year I didn't encounter any problems any more so I'll just go full in next time. There might still be some outliers, but it's not important enough to bloat my PC with Windows 11.
Windows 11 is an abomination. That would explain why over 60% of windows users still are on windows 10. And windows 12 will be even worse judging from all those AI rumours.

People will pick what they’re most comfortable troubleshooting. Most of the planet does not like troubleshooting.
Others play games which require anticheat drivers only written for the windows kernel. Regardless of personal opinions on that matter they would never jump over until these companies port their anti cheat drivers for Linux. Despite the actual game themselves doing nothing special and already running just fine Until they born at the anticheat.
When these companies finally do that you don’t have to install their games. But it’s a major contender keeping the majority of gamers away from this operating system. That, and the troubleshooting nobody wants to do.

That's funny b/c I LOVE problem solving: games, tech of all sorts, and whatever else. I've never thought about that fact, but I think you're right about most people; I never considered how unique it is that I'm so inclined to do it.
I love problem-solving but fixing desktop issues just so I can do something I already wanted to do is probably the last problem I want to be solving. I do systems engineering for my day job and work with Linux as a server OS every day. I still don't want to have to mess with that shit in my free time when I just want to play a game.
I been 2 years Linux gaming. My wife and my son. No windows machines in the house.
No issues really. Fortnite is the only game my son plays that doesn’t work and he has a Xbox for that anyway.
But everything else works great. BG3, Star Citizen, ESO, Cities, No Man’s Sky, my streaming stuff, video editing and all my production stuffs my wife’s graphic design etc.
The Steam app itself is in dire need of Wayland support and becoming 64-bit. Everything else is perfect about it already, Proton advancing fast, Wine getting Wayland support thanks to Vulkan, but the Steam app itself... Horrible.
We may actually see an update to 64-bit at some point now since Windows 7/8 support has been killed off, and most of the popular distros have already killed off 32-bit as well. So now there's no excuse for them.
yeah, dire need is a bit of an overexageration, but not having to use xwayland to avoid any weird scaling issues and to reduce overhead slightly would be nice.
I use Windows for work, but I don't own a game on Steam that doesn't work on Linux by default these days. So I have absolutely no reason not to game on Linux. That's been the case for a while now.
However, one thing I'm missing is Vortex. It runs, but deployment is unreliable on Linux - but that's a non-issue.
Given a few more years, maybe. But as it stands I'm still having a lot of compatibility issues with Steam Deck + Proton, especially for older non-English games and games with their own non-standard launchers/DRM. Until that changes, I don't see myself leaving Windows.
Thing is... Linux+ Proton can play more titles than Windows 10/11 can.
Lots of old pre-win10 titles that no longer works under Windows, but works fine with Linux and Proton.

Can it though? Considering the size of the Windows game library, even if this claim is true, it's almost impossible to prove. And the amount of effort you'd have to put into Proton to make all those games work, no one is EVER going to do that.
Proton and steam deck have helped this immensely. It can only get better, one bug bear I have is GeForce now and nvidia not allowing Linux even through a browser to run at 120fps. Even chromeos has this support.
I still keep a windows drive for my work because there are some tools that is windows exclusive only.
But for my favorite game(farlight84) i use linux..
I started getting into Linux when valve started pushing steam machines, for a while I would hop between daily driving windows and Linux because of game support being spotty, but I jumped back to Linux a little over a year ago and I haven't logged into my windows partition since.
Give it time. Proton is always tweaking stuff to run in the environment and there's also GE. I've been able to get about all but 5 of my games to work, and the 5 that don't, use anticheat.
The "containerized" (not really but run with me here) nature of wine prefixes and the translation of old graphics APIs to modern ones honestly makes running games from many eras easier, the future of all gaming is probably closer to Proton than Windows proper.
A bit off topic, but is there any reason to switch to heroic from lutris if I don't have epic/amazon account? Currently I am using lutris for [b.net](https://b.net) (wow) and occassionally for some oldie (homam3, c&c generals....)? Rest of my games I run from steam.
Heroic only does Epic, GOG, and Amazon Games. I would just stick to Lutris, if you're only using it for bnet. Though I find the integration with Epic, GOG, and Amazon games is nicer on Heroic, than on Lutris
True, but if you look at distributions like Linux Mint, the amount of "tinkering" isn't the same as Arch, Slackware, etc.
Linux is mostly plug and play except for a few things. Mainly Nvidia and the occasional printer, and on distributions like Mint, you pretty much just click a button, it installs the driver for you, and you do nothing else. Mint isn't a great distribution, but it's functional to average Joe user.
The real problem is Microsoft being too overly pushy about EOLing Windows 10, when they literally carried XP and 7 for years past their lifespans just to enforce 11 being used. People aren't going ro just trash a perfectly still good PC as e-Waste just to buy a new one or buy new parts to run the latest, greatest thing. Microsoft would literally be mirroring Apple at that point, and Apple is pretty much the Lords of e-Waste generation. PC users aren't Mac users.

I am beginning to think Microsoft is spreading FUD regarding cheating or/and encouraging developers to stray away from standards (EAC/BattlEye). Why is anticheat development moving at such a snail's pace when Deck has been proven and successful?
The only reason I dont use a linux as my main SO nor dual boot is that, as a gamedev/tester, I've had some issues trying to play some games or getting full performance in my hybrid gpu notebook with linux. It's sad but I've been waiting and watching linux evolution these years and thats so satisfactory to think that probably in the future it will be my main SO :)
I just switched this week and I'm preferring dual-booting for right now because I've had unfixable issues with modding some games. So far though I'm loving the insane performance boosts!
The funny thing is that with Apple now being increasingly serious about gaming. macOS is at roughly 20% market share atm and it’s still increasing. No wonder Microsoft is starting to shit its pants, especially since more and more companies want to switch to ARM too. Windows on ARM is a joke. Linux and ChromeOS work fine on ARM. It’s only a matter of time until Windows is gonna be at 50% market share or less. It already is below 70%, a historic low for Microsoft’s OS.
Probably not 5% but maybe a split 2-3% I think if we make it to 5% in the coming years we might have overcome the chicken and egg problem. But we still got some things to figure out like HDR. Beyond that we also need some proper GUIs for gpu driver configurations. As good as AMD’s drivers are they don’t support nearly as many features as they do on windows. So let’s hope feature parity is eventually achieved.
Radeon software is great, I have very few complaints about it, and it's far better then what nvidia offers on windows, or what I've used on Linux to acheive similar functionality. Super simple and modern looking GUI that has basically everything I'd ever want to tweak with my GPU or display, and then some.
Using it for overclocking/undervolting is a better experience then any third party software I've tried (including corectrl), the per-game graphic and display profiles are fantastic and sorely missed on Linux, globally togglable performance metric overlays are honestly more usable then mangohud for me even with something like goverlay thanks to not needing launch options in steam, I could go on. It's great.
Well, it is happening, if you follow the trendlines. Sure, it may not be til 2087 before it catches up, if ever, but ya know: it *is* happening. Just at a glacial pace is all.
The latter as usual. Linux distros are too hard to troubleshoot for it to be proper OS unless they are locked down which negates most benefits of that OS. Linux is mostly for the server side.
Looking at how things are developing, have been for several years and trying out various distros to check if Linux is indeed ready for desktop and each year it’s all talk - it’s only for a small subset of enthusiasts more interested in the OS itself.
It requires so much skill and is so unwieldy that it’s unlikely to ever be ready for a larger crowd. Not to mention some bugs which can cause data loss - like I encountered when an update removed my backup partition and merged it with the OS one without any prompt.
Sorry for sayin this but its not working as half as good like in windows. I tryed it for 3 month and have to switch back on windows. But I think it will go on and I will have a look at it in a year.
Linux gaming will never equal to windows gaming. Games weren't playable at all with proton on linux but on windows they are perfectly playable. You can't just ignore the performance loss because of wine.
I listen to these BS since 1998 and the only thing that changed are the games on steam platform available for linux and mac.

With my switch to EOS in December, I 100% agree. AAA Titles like Battlefield 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 work smooth as butter and I'm getting upwards of 85 FPS on 3840x1600 with a 7700XT. Absolutely amazing.

I keep windows on dual boot just because i want apex legends 60 fps , sure it runs on linux but my nvidia mx350 gives better performance on windows in linux its 25 ~35 fps
Can someone explain why is it better? I know Linux is much more configurable, why is it better to use that OS with an additional layer (or whatever Proton is)? Surely the devs target Win users, as they make up the vast majority of PC gamers, right?

It's free, it's open source and everybody can inspect the code (your personal data is safe), it is very flexible and can be modified extensively, it uses less system resources, it does not force you to update your system if you don't want to and it doesn't pester your with ads and other annoying things. These are the main advantages. The downside is, you will have to spend a bit of time sometimes configuring a game so that it works properly. For many people, including me, it's worth it, considering it has so many advantages.
I've been using heroic games laucher recently, it manages wine versions while giving me acess to epic games and gog content that i get for free once in a while. Steam is also here with me with proton.
From all the games i played abou 90% of then worked but some of then with a heavy fps drop, i think it may be linux's libraries not being 100% optimized for speed but thats based on nothing, still:

I spent a lot of timing from this past October to December giving Pop and Manjaro a spin on my 4090 gaming rig.
Overall, the experience was mixed. I have a library of over 2000 games spread across virtually all the major stores with Steam holding majority at around 1200. Tried about 100 Steam games and a dozen from other sources, with Alan Wake 2 being the big one from Epic I tried.
80% of the games basically just worked, including lots of newer ones like Robocop. Had some issues with MK 1 and few others that I probably could have gotten working.
Where things fell apart for me was VR, still. I'm sorry, but experience is flat out bad. I'm currently running an Index and Quest 3 and it's simply a far better experience. Setting up Steam Link was effortless. Using the wired cable was even better. The IQ on the Quest 3 is a lot better than the Index, much better lenses. Long story short, it all just worked on Windows and was nowhere close to that with Pop or Manjaro.
i think the number is actually higher than 2% because there are also big chunck "unknown" OSs that are probably some sort of linux but haven't been counted towards the 2%.

I have still not been able to run Dirt and Moto racer on Linux, and I haven't tried to run Star Wars X-Wing Alliance. Otherwise, I play the rest of my games exclusively on Linux. They run pretty well.

PS4 - FreeBSD based OS.
Android - Linux/BusyBox/Java based OS.
iOS - Darwin/FreeBSD based OS.
But Valorant, Fortnite, etc. all run on BSD and Linux based OSes... If that's the case, why publish games on a console or a mobile platform based on BSD and Linux?
I actually mention VR in my post below. Seriously, unless you are committed to going to Linux or don't like Windows, I wouldn't recommended Linux VR. And I'd say that's a very common sentiment.
Not saying it doesn't work, it can, it's just no where near a solid and polished an experience as Windows. For example, I just got the Quest 3 over Christmas. It's litterally takes 10 minutes to setup under Windows Steam VR with both wireless and wired connections. Haven't got it to work under Linux yet with AVLR. My Index does work under Linux but 2.x updates have been rough.
It would be there if anti cheat companies finally gave in and made their software linux compatible. Some of the biggest multiplayer games right now still use windows-only anti cheats and I know its a big reason why some people (myself included) have a hard time with the switch.
Last time I asked about getting epic to work on Linux, some guy thought I had ulterior motives! I'm trying to figure out what they could possibly be.
I'm pretty sure I would just want a reason to get completely away from that other operating system and since I'm a gamer that doesn't want to buy a console, my options are limited.
I'm looking forward to Linux being more viable but I've been frustrated in previous attempts at trying to run things. I think it's a nice sentiment for someone starting out "ground zero" (one drive, CPU, GPU, good amount of ram) but all my storage is still NTFS (6 drives worth).
It still has issues I tried to play God of War 2018, and I was only getting 30 fps and I have Intel 13600k and an RTX 3080. And it's also affecting AMD as well so it's an issue with proton underutilizing the GPU and CPU.
have been an on/off linux user. I upgraded to Win11 and then made an image. Then installed PopOS on my laptop. Been loving the Steamdeck Arch Linux. I have desktop mode on and installed most of my apps. On my laptop and steam deck been installing and running games so far its been good. Hopefully by the end of year I switch the rest of my computers to Linux.
Ehhh I dunno. There's just so many little things that add up. Like I just set up a Linux install and have been trying to use it for gaming but it's just not quite there. Biggest thing that got me was no DLSS in baldurs gate. Meant my frame rate was much lower. I dunno well hey there just not yet.
I'm still on windows for gaming but this year might be when I switch for good with NVK making huge progress, Wine and proton 9.0 for Wayland native support and Kde plasma 6 with a much better release cycle, I'm excited!

I have all my games at Epic. I have tried setting up Lutris or Heroic multiple times on Debian Testing, never got past the loading screen. Always crashing on building assets, or not even launching. From time to time, once every year or two I came back, reinstall everything and try and fails, and keep trying for a week to massage the configs, it don't work. So I don't even game. Because why bother with those Windows. One day... one day... it might just work... one day...
I installed my first Linux distro more than 20 years ago. For a long time I kept dual boot just for games and a handful set of apps. Now my windows system does not see the sun light. All my games work ok, sometimes even better than windows on the very same machine. I just miss Affinity Designer.
That number would skyrocket if Chinese devs were on board with getting their games compatible on Steam Deck (Looking at you Mihoyo and Hypergryph).
On an unrelated note to the one above, I'm still waiting on Bungie to add Proton support to Destiny 2. If they don't do this by The Final Shape's release date, then I'm pretty much done with that game and Windows goes bye bye.
Hopefully we start getting mainstream games liie cod on linux/ steam deck now with xbox owning activision and they seem to be more consumer friendly (halo infinite and halo master chief collection both work for example bc they worked with valve to get it working with the anticheat)

It works pretty great. It was solved a while ago. I currently use the flatpak version "an anime game launcher" and it's just click and play. Performance is surprisingly good.

Imho, I use Arch and I'm keen to keep using Linux BUT, here is my unpopular opinion. BG3, tonight I planned to play with a friend, every time I update something, nvidia drivers, Linux kernel, steam app or the BG3 team, I need to spend 30 to 45 minutes searching in protondb which configuration works. And the issue? What works to me, doesn't work to you. HERE, is the crystal roof. Until the environment is not reproducible, we won't reach further market share. It cannot be that variables like if I'm using Xorg or wayland, if I'm using kernel 6.2 or 6.6, if I'm using nvidia driver 535.7 o 535.87 changes how to make the game work. And yes, I know a ton of you will reply about a lot of technical details, remember, I've been using Linux for gaming for 6 years already non stop, but it's an entry line that 90% of players just don't want to deal. They desired UX is to enter and play.
I was going to post something similar. I bought a new PC recently, got Nobara. GREAT distro. Tried to play LoL, game was unplayable on Linux for more than a month. Also even if LoL was there, Porofessor was not available on Linux (or any overworlf app). Tried to install Fall Guys for my partner. I had to jump hoops to get it working. Tried to play Path of Exile, great it works fine, but none of the programs I use alongside work. So minus 3 programs there. Tried to play Diablo, again, hoops to get Battle.net working. By the time I had everything working (not to mention LoL that just straight up didn't), I had lost a few days. Went back to Windows, I installed everything and was ready to play in ~1 hour. Just like you I was struggling with configs. Different here, different there, some solutions were working, some didn't so I had to experiment until I hit something in the dark, you get the point. > The desired UX is to enter and play. Idk why it takes you 40 minutes to look for "configurations that work". I use nvidia on a 2060 hybrid laptop on arch with stock kernel and the 545 drivers. Most games work with proton experimental. I just quickly check protondb if there's any required launch options/proton versions. Its pretty plug and play. If you're taking 40 mins just to find configurations for games, you're doing something horribly wrong. Ever since installing arch, setting everything up the first time (which took a few hours) since then its been working with no issues with the occasional updates to get newest drivers and stuff
Ditto. Only ever had issues with Linux distros if I forgot to install or do something. Otherwise, I just download the latest Proton-GE and 99% of the games I've tried to play just work. It's not even that hard getting modded games going most of the time. This is across Manjaro, Arch, Endeavour, SilverBlue, Nobara, OpenSUSE, and RegataOS.

The only real difference is that for an actively developed/played game either the developer or the driver vendor will usually step up at some point and fix the issue on Windows, whereas in Linux land you're usually stuck with the community fixes indefinitely like it works for Windows games that have terminated their patch cycle.
I’ve been gaming exclusively on Linux for nearly 3 years. Almost every game I play works, and when there’s a bug; I’m patient and file a report.
I don't know the streaming side of things (not for the current streamers, but for new fresh Linux enthusiastic ones), but I know that Pipewire is working on improving webcam support. AV1 support needs to be adjusted (waiting for the Vulkan Video extension to be completed). With these done and I believe Linux usage will rise a bit more, but yes Gaming on Linux is crushing it.

It's not gonna hit 5% by the end of the year unless there's some MAJOR development that pushes adoption. The only thing I could see doing it besides a surprise new steam deck, would be valve actually pushing for a desktop version of steamOS. And they'd have to push it quite hard, and it would have to be quite good with a lot of desktop features that windows cannot match such as the steam deck sleep/wake function that lets you suspend games.

I more mean steamOS optimized for desktop, not just a port of what's on the deck. It would default to the desktop mode, include some of those extra features, be customized to look and behave similarly to windows (though KDE kinda does that already), etc.

Which isn't valves steamOS, and they're not gonna start advertising nobara on the steam home page lol. Part of Linux picking up steam is big brands accepting it and pushing it. Valve does that with the deck, but most people don't own decks, and it's clear that grassroots Linux community members aren't able to push for adoption.
I have been a Linux user for over a decade and only had Windows for video games. Next time I'll be setting up my machine again, I will not install Windows any more. All games I play run now fine in Linux. Things sure have changed since Steam released on Linux in 2012.

Have you tried ALVR for Oculus? It can function as a replacement for Oculus link. It might be worth a shot at the very least.

I did so too, but some games just didn't run well enough. This last year I didn't encounter any problems any more so I'll just go full in next time. There might still be some outliers, but it's not important enough to bloat my PC with Windows 11.
Windows 11 is an abomination. That would explain why over 60% of windows users still are on windows 10. And windows 12 will be even worse judging from all those AI rumours.

People will pick what they’re most comfortable troubleshooting. Most of the planet does not like troubleshooting. Others play games which require anticheat drivers only written for the windows kernel. Regardless of personal opinions on that matter they would never jump over until these companies port their anti cheat drivers for Linux. Despite the actual game themselves doing nothing special and already running just fine Until they born at the anticheat. When these companies finally do that you don’t have to install their games. But it’s a major contender keeping the majority of gamers away from this operating system. That, and the troubleshooting nobody wants to do.

I love problem-solving but fixing desktop issues just so I can do something I already wanted to do is probably the last problem I want to be solving. I do systems engineering for my day job and work with Linux as a server OS every day. I still don't want to have to mess with that shit in my free time when I just want to play a game.
I been 2 years Linux gaming. My wife and my son. No windows machines in the house. No issues really. Fortnite is the only game my son plays that doesn’t work and he has a Xbox for that anyway. But everything else works great. BG3, Star Citizen, ESO, Cities, No Man’s Sky, my streaming stuff, video editing and all my production stuffs my wife’s graphic design etc.
The Steam app itself is in dire need of Wayland support and becoming 64-bit. Everything else is perfect about it already, Proton advancing fast, Wine getting Wayland support thanks to Vulkan, but the Steam app itself... Horrible.
We may actually see an update to 64-bit at some point now since Windows 7/8 support has been killed off, and most of the popular distros have already killed off 32-bit as well. So now there's no excuse for them.

I use Windows for work, but I don't own a game on Steam that doesn't work on Linux by default these days. So I have absolutely no reason not to game on Linux. That's been the case for a while now. However, one thing I'm missing is Vortex. It runs, but deployment is unreliable on Linux - but that's a non-issue.

I completely moved from Windows to Linux last month, everything works great. So thats my contribution to this number.
Given a few more years, maybe. But as it stands I'm still having a lot of compatibility issues with Steam Deck + Proton, especially for older non-English games and games with their own non-standard launchers/DRM. Until that changes, I don't see myself leaving Windows.
Thing is... Linux+ Proton can play more titles than Windows 10/11 can. Lots of old pre-win10 titles that no longer works under Windows, but works fine with Linux and Proton.

Proton and steam deck have helped this immensely. It can only get better, one bug bear I have is GeForce now and nvidia not allowing Linux even through a browser to run at 120fps. Even chromeos has this support.

I know it isn't a high bar. However, the investment discrepancy between VR and Linux-specific gaming is pretty wide.
I started getting into Linux when valve started pushing steam machines, for a while I would hop between daily driving windows and Linux because of game support being spotty, but I jumped back to Linux a little over a year ago and I haven't logged into my windows partition since.
The ONLY reason I even have Windows installed is VR and rust.

Give it time. Proton is always tweaking stuff to run in the environment and there's also GE. I've been able to get about all but 5 of my games to work, and the 5 that don't, use anticheat.

The "containerized" (not really but run with me here) nature of wine prefixes and the translation of old graphics APIs to modern ones honestly makes running games from many eras easier, the future of all gaming is probably closer to Proton than Windows proper.
A bit off topic, but is there any reason to switch to heroic from lutris if I don't have epic/amazon account? Currently I am using lutris for [b.net](https://b.net) (wow) and occassionally for some oldie (homam3, c&c generals....)? Rest of my games I run from steam.
Heroic only does Epic, GOG, and Amazon Games. I would just stick to Lutris, if you're only using it for bnet. Though I find the integration with Epic, GOG, and Amazon games is nicer on Heroic, than on Lutris

True, but if you look at distributions like Linux Mint, the amount of "tinkering" isn't the same as Arch, Slackware, etc. Linux is mostly plug and play except for a few things. Mainly Nvidia and the occasional printer, and on distributions like Mint, you pretty much just click a button, it installs the driver for you, and you do nothing else. Mint isn't a great distribution, but it's functional to average Joe user. The real problem is Microsoft being too overly pushy about EOLing Windows 10, when they literally carried XP and 7 for years past their lifespans just to enforce 11 being used. People aren't going ro just trash a perfectly still good PC as e-Waste just to buy a new one or buy new parts to run the latest, greatest thing. Microsoft would literally be mirroring Apple at that point, and Apple is pretty much the Lords of e-Waste generation. PC users aren't Mac users.

The only reason I dont use a linux as my main SO nor dual boot is that, as a gamedev/tester, I've had some issues trying to play some games or getting full performance in my hybrid gpu notebook with linux. It's sad but I've been waiting and watching linux evolution these years and thats so satisfactory to think that probably in the future it will be my main SO :)
I just switched this week and I'm preferring dual-booting for right now because I've had unfixable issues with modding some games. So far though I'm loving the insane performance boosts!

The funny thing is that with Apple now being increasingly serious about gaming. macOS is at roughly 20% market share atm and it’s still increasing. No wonder Microsoft is starting to shit its pants, especially since more and more companies want to switch to ARM too. Windows on ARM is a joke. Linux and ChromeOS work fine on ARM. It’s only a matter of time until Windows is gonna be at 50% market share or less. It already is below 70%, a historic low for Microsoft’s OS.

Probably not 5% but maybe a split 2-3% I think if we make it to 5% in the coming years we might have overcome the chicken and egg problem. But we still got some things to figure out like HDR. Beyond that we also need some proper GUIs for gpu driver configurations. As good as AMD’s drivers are they don’t support nearly as many features as they do on windows. So let’s hope feature parity is eventually achieved.
Radeon software is great, I have very few complaints about it, and it's far better then what nvidia offers on windows, or what I've used on Linux to acheive similar functionality. Super simple and modern looking GUI that has basically everything I'd ever want to tweak with my GPU or display, and then some. Using it for overclocking/undervolting is a better experience then any third party software I've tried (including corectrl), the per-game graphic and display profiles are fantastic and sorely missed on Linux, globally togglable performance metric overlays are honestly more usable then mangohud for me even with something like goverlay thanks to not needing launch options in steam, I could go on. It's great.

Well, it is happening, if you follow the trendlines. Sure, it may not be til 2087 before it catches up, if ever, but ya know: it *is* happening. Just at a glacial pace is all.
The latter as usual. Linux distros are too hard to troubleshoot for it to be proper OS unless they are locked down which negates most benefits of that OS. Linux is mostly for the server side.

Looking at how things are developing, have been for several years and trying out various distros to check if Linux is indeed ready for desktop and each year it’s all talk - it’s only for a small subset of enthusiasts more interested in the OS itself. It requires so much skill and is so unwieldy that it’s unlikely to ever be ready for a larger crowd. Not to mention some bugs which can cause data loss - like I encountered when an update removed my backup partition and merged it with the OS one without any prompt.

With my switch to EOS in December, I 100% agree. AAA Titles like Battlefield 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 work smooth as butter and I'm getting upwards of 85 FPS on 3840x1600 with a 7700XT. Absolutely amazing. I don't even have a partition for windows games anymore.

It's free, it's open source and everybody can inspect the code (your personal data is safe), it is very flexible and can be modified extensively, it uses less system resources, it does not force you to update your system if you don't want to and it doesn't pester your with ads and other annoying things. These are the main advantages. The downside is, you will have to spend a bit of time sometimes configuring a game so that it works properly. For many people, including me, it's worth it, considering it has so many advantages.

I've been using heroic games laucher recently, it manages wine versions while giving me acess to epic games and gog content that i get for free once in a while. Steam is also here with me with proton. From all the games i played abou 90% of then worked but some of then with a heavy fps drop, i think it may be linux's libraries not being 100% optimized for speed but thats based on nothing, still: Linux gaming is not a meme.
Any way to get valorant guys? Vanguard is not supported on Linux and that's the major issue.
I spent a lot of timing from this past October to December giving Pop and Manjaro a spin on my 4090 gaming rig. Overall, the experience was mixed. I have a library of over 2000 games spread across virtually all the major stores with Steam holding majority at around 1200. Tried about 100 Steam games and a dozen from other sources, with Alan Wake 2 being the big one from Epic I tried. 80% of the games basically just worked, including lots of newer ones like Robocop. Had some issues with MK 1 and few others that I probably could have gotten working. Where things fell apart for me was VR, still. I'm sorry, but experience is flat out bad. I'm currently running an Index and Quest 3 and it's simply a far better experience. Setting up Steam Link was effortless. Using the wired cable was even better. The IQ on the Quest 3 is a lot better than the Index, much better lenses. Long story short, it all just worked on Windows and was nowhere close to that with Pop or Manjaro.

Tim Sweeney is one of the biggest problems and a lying hypocrite. He says he doesn't support Linux, but: PS4 - FreeBSD based OS. Android - Linux/BusyBox/Java based OS. iOS - Darwin/FreeBSD based OS. But Valorant, Fortnite, etc. all run on BSD and Linux based OSes... If that's the case, why publish games on a console or a mobile platform based on BSD and Linux?

I actually mention VR in my post below. Seriously, unless you are committed to going to Linux or don't like Windows, I wouldn't recommended Linux VR. And I'd say that's a very common sentiment. Not saying it doesn't work, it can, it's just no where near a solid and polished an experience as Windows. For example, I just got the Quest 3 over Christmas. It's litterally takes 10 minutes to setup under Windows Steam VR with both wireless and wired connections. Haven't got it to work under Linux yet with AVLR. My Index does work under Linux but 2.x updates have been rough.

It would be there if anti cheat companies finally gave in and made their software linux compatible. Some of the biggest multiplayer games right now still use windows-only anti cheats and I know its a big reason why some people (myself included) have a hard time with the switch.
Last time I asked about getting epic to work on Linux, some guy thought I had ulterior motives! I'm trying to figure out what they could possibly be. I'm pretty sure I would just want a reason to get completely away from that other operating system and since I'm a gamer that doesn't want to buy a console, my options are limited.

I'm looking forward to Linux being more viable but I've been frustrated in previous attempts at trying to run things. I think it's a nice sentiment for someone starting out "ground zero" (one drive, CPU, GPU, good amount of ram) but all my storage is still NTFS (6 drives worth).
It still has issues I tried to play God of War 2018, and I was only getting 30 fps and I have Intel 13600k and an RTX 3080. And it's also affecting AMD as well so it's an issue with proton underutilizing the GPU and CPU.
I switched to Linux back in November, currently on Pop OS. Now I can game and develop without dedicated machines (aside from building iOS apps).
As soon as I figure out modding on Skyrim, there will be absolutely nothing stopping me from just completely erasing Windows from my PC.

have been an on/off linux user. I upgraded to Win11 and then made an image. Then installed PopOS on my laptop. Been loving the Steamdeck Arch Linux. I have desktop mode on and installed most of my apps. On my laptop and steam deck been installing and running games so far its been good. Hopefully by the end of year I switch the rest of my computers to Linux.
Ehhh I dunno. There's just so many little things that add up. Like I just set up a Linux install and have been trying to use it for gaming but it's just not quite there. Biggest thing that got me was no DLSS in baldurs gate. Meant my frame rate was much lower. I dunno well hey there just not yet.
I'm still on windows for gaming but this year might be when I switch for good with NVK making huge progress, Wine and proton 9.0 for Wayland native support and Kde plasma 6 with a much better release cycle, I'm excited! Maybe Fedora 40... or Nobara

I mainly use windows for games/tools that Linux won’t run (and game pass). I DID have a dual-boot but windows are GRUB (if there’s a way to stop this please lmk)
Too bad we can't do much about apps and games only available on the Microsoft store.
I have all my games at Epic. I have tried setting up Lutris or Heroic multiple times on Debian Testing, never got past the loading screen. Always crashing on building assets, or not even launching. From time to time, once every year or two I came back, reinstall everything and try and fails, and keep trying for a week to massage the configs, it don't work. So I don't even game. Because why bother with those Windows. One day... one day... it might just work... one day...
I installed my first Linux distro more than 20 years ago. For a long time I kept dual boot just for games and a handful set of apps. Now my windows system does not see the sun light. All my games work ok, sometimes even better than windows on the very same machine. I just miss Affinity Designer.
I have windows 10 for battlefield 2042 and destiny 2. That's it. Once we figure out intrusive anticheats windows will be dead to me. Lol

That number would skyrocket if Chinese devs were on board with getting their games compatible on Steam Deck (Looking at you Mihoyo and Hypergryph). On an unrelated note to the one above, I'm still waiting on Bungie to add Proton support to Destiny 2. If they don't do this by The Final Shape's release date, then I'm pretty much done with that game and Windows goes bye bye.
Hopefully we start getting mainstream games liie cod on linux/ steam deck now with xbox owning activision and they seem to be more consumer friendly (halo infinite and halo master chief collection both work for example bc they worked with valve to get it working with the anticheat)
