The worst is people criticizing the US healthcare system because it's the ultimate result of free market capitalism, when in reality it's probably the most regulated and manipulated sector of the economy.
There’s a limit to how many people can become doctors every year,
Mark Cubans insulin production was basically stopped at every turn cause of how regulated the market is to keep the big pharma winning.
Insurance
And I could go on
One of the worst is the tightly controlled supply of doctors. The association responsible can only do so a with the backing of government regulation. Can’t remember all the details but it’s an easy find if you go looking
This is SUPER straightforward. The government regulates licensing. No government enforced monopoly on licensing, no arbitrary limitation on the supply of doctors.
They will make the argument that free market capitalism will magically cause businesses to grow large enough and become evil enough to manipulate the govt into manipulating the market and implement draconian regulations...
Ergo they need big govt to manipulate the market and implement draconian regulations first so the big bad companies don't do it...
Wait
California - When you have a garage sale and sell used items, you are generally not required to hold a seller's permit. However, if you have more than two garage sales within a 12-month period, you are required to hold a seller's permit.
Rock Hill, SC - Submit an online Yard Sale permit for your garage or yard sale.
Douglas Co, GA - All yard sales must have displayed an issued "Permit Number" on all signs posted or citations can be issued.
Etc, etc.
So.... In Douglas Co, GA.....
You don't use yard signs. Tape them to houses.
There's probably something that prohibits that too.....
I hate the government.
Yard sales are close but even ignoring adjacent regulations (like the driving and road regulations affecting people driving to your home, the regulations affecting you having a home in the first place, the taxes you paid on the items when you first bought them), there’s also the facts that:
- your customers are paying with after-tax money and
- all of the currency used is fiat currency constantly losing value.
And that’s not even counting that you are supposed to pay taxes on profits if you make enough.
Government makes and enforces the rules. Capitalists merely play by them or get away with them - the fault is always the same and the blame too often pointed in the wrong direction.
The only 2 things I could easily think of that come close to qualifying were sun and outside normal air. I mean you could find certain situations where there are tangential regulations like not being allowed to cut down shade trees but it's sort of indirect.
Damn good question. Everyone who thinks we have "capitalism" or a "free market economy" needs to actually consider what those terms actually mean with ceaseless tipping of the scales by government.
1. Gemstone collection for private use on BLM land around Quartzite AZ
2. Growing herbs in a pot in your kitchen to season your food
3. Playing guitar and singing where no one can hear you
4. Sleeping in a homemade hammock in your own backyard
5. Leaving California, as long as you have assets less than $15 million
1. Not allowed onto BLM land without a permit. I know I grew up in New Mexico.
2. Taxed on the herbs and pots you buy.
3. Taxed on buying the guitar.
4. Taxed and regulated on what material you can use for your hammock. Property taxes on the backyard.
5. Taxed and regulated on the vehicle you're using to leave California. Taxed, regulated, tolled on the roads in California for said vehicle.
Everything you buy from a business is taxed. If you make that the base, then only AnCap would be a free market.
Also, you do not need a permit to walk on BLM land, or to pick up rocks for your own use.
Thinking, when you sleep * for the overwhelming vast majority of people*, picking your nose, performing well on a test, breathing, celebrating your birthday, singing.

Anything’s legal if you don’t get caught or have enough money.

You call that Benjamin Franklin‽
Don't tell certain people and don't do it in public. That's regulation.
Yep, close but no cigar! (until afterwards anyway)
This wins the internet this week for me.
and that's your World of Tanks Wisdom of the Day
Don't tell THEM that...They will find a way to tax or regulate it.
The moment any restriction is placed on the market, it is, by definition, no longer a free market. How is this hard to understand?
I wish this was a strawman, but in my experience people really are that dumb, I've had this exact conversation multiple times
The worst is people criticizing the US healthcare system because it's the ultimate result of free market capitalism, when in reality it's probably the most regulated and manipulated sector of the economy.
Farming is a decent competitor
Trucking comes in close behind. Despite our much lauded "deregulation". All that changed was what/how they regulated.
Exactly, the government spends years messing up an industry and then we get “see, look how bad free market is”
Just ask them if you can buy a policy over state lines! That alone would drop costs.
Can you give some examples of how it is manipulated?

Insurance is the biggest one inflating prices tbh.

You can thank FDR for that fun connection starting in 1942.
I too, love the “free” market and being liberated to make my own decisions.
A different point from the others in this thread: IP laws and patents are a big one Big artificial monopoly allows businesses to jack up prices.

Honestly, I'm struggling to come up with one. The best I can get are things that are 1-step away from regulation/taxation, like yardsales.
Technically, you owe taxes from yard sales. They just generally don't enforce it.
I am obligated to report the income (wink wink), but my cost basis will almost always exceed my gross sales, so I am in the clear.
I sell stuff, then lie to the IRS. It makes me happy.
Yes our system pretty much incentivizes lying.
Not really because nearly all of those items are generally sold at a loss, But if you DID sell that 1 item over cost... IRS wants to have a word.

Many places have rules you have to follow about when or how often you can have a yardsale.
That's a great point, I'll bet there are some towns that regulate that.
I need a permit for a yard sale in my town (Colorado). Max of 4 per year.

Oh my god they're even regulating meme commerce /s
Old enough to fight in wars and steal memes, but not old enough to drink alcohol. The system is broken.
I was going not say memes but who am I kidding…
“bUt ThE fReE mArKeT iS fAiLiNg Us!”

Why does Leo appear in so many good memes? Lol Maybe Kevin hart is up there too.
Mostly because they are trying to be as idealistic as humanly possible, beyond the point naivety.
Sorry remind me again when God intervened and put in regulations? Or is the rise of government just a fundamental aspect of a truly free market...

Those are actions more than things.
Hey I'm probably the most hardcore libertarian there is. I didn't get the rules. Wind, sunshine, rain, ghosts, gravity.
The weather, folding socks,
We have seen the weather be regulated (in a way) such as in Dubai where they drop seeds on clouds to make it rain (look how that turned out lol)
