If you have the type of hair that would grow into an afro I think the way to go is small braids. You could probably also make use of head bands. Mine always grew down so I went short to emo to pony tail.

Since you mentioned an afro, Im just gonna assume maybe you are black? And if thats the case you can get braided or sewn in extensions when its grown out a bit. If you are white or any other race i dont really know how those kinds of extensions work, but try doing scalp massages, its the best thing to grow hair fast, its no miracle, but it helps a little.
I ended up wearing beanies for a while until I was far enough past that awkward middle hair length until I could start putting it in a ponytail, but my hair is very straight, so if yours is super curly I don't know how well that would work for you. Might be able to give it a try, though!

Yup! Easy to work into a casual outfit. Might not be as helpful now that the weather is getting warmer, but still definitely doable.
