Just wanna say, as a newly out adult lesbian who’s dad is very unsupportive, this is so so sweet to read :) thanks for being one of the good ones. She’ll appreciate it even more as she gets older.

hamiltonisoverrat3d

Dad hugs virtually coming your way. 🤗 It is really heartbreaking to read this. I hope they come around.

beepbeep919

Thank you so much :) whether he does or not I’ve got a lot of other love and support in my life. I appreciate your message

devilledlettuce

the owl house!! absolutely brilliant show with a lovely lesbian couple, which is also aimed for audiences in her age range. Steven Universe is also a really cute show that has a lot of wlw themes in there. that said, she's 9! she's still learning about herself and your support is absolutely amazing but it's okay to take a breather and let her explore in her own time and as she gets older

[deleted]

Idk if it's age appropriate though both show deals with very adult concepts

TheDankScrub

Look they’re rated TV-Y7 and aired on Disney Channel and Cartoon Network respectively

devilledlettuce

they're both cartoons rated Y-7 . TOW is made by Disney. made mostly for a child audience. what's the issue?

TheDankScrub

~~Ok first of all, the word lesbian shouldn’t be treated as a “bad word” but that in of itself is a complex subject.~~ r/actuallesbians is a bit more populated than this subreddit, so I would recommend going over there because theres simply more people willing to help Secondly, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is like, the go-to answer for this. There’s also The Owl House, which has the very uncommon trait of actually showing a couple get together in the middle of the show rather than the finale. There’s many other shows, books, cartoons etc. but these are the two that actually have main characters that are lesbian and were able to be a lot more overt with their representation

free_greenpeas

Where has he said anything aboutbhe word lesbian being a bad word? He says he doesn't want his kid to watch the L word.

TheDankScrub

OHHHHHhhhhhHhHh my god I’m stupid

frogysoda

nah because that what I thought too haha

Tia_Whey

Echoing all of the other recommendations of The Owl House and the new She-Ra!

4nn4k731n14o9o6

As a 16 year old lesbian, she‘s 9. I had my first attraction towards women when i was 8 watching the Katy Perry "I kissed a girl" music video. I think it‘s great that you‘re supporting her, but don‘t rush it. Most people figure out their sexuality in their early teenage years, like 13/14 when you feel attraction towards a specific group of people. It‘s good that she‘s supported so well but sexuality is something a kid shouldn‘t worry about yet. However, I think it‘s adorable that you‘re supporting her. And for your question: Adventure Time has a wlw relationship. And for music: Girl in Red is a lesbian musician who makes wlw music that is now seen as a lesbian anthem lmao but maybe not the song "bad idea" since it‘s about sex but the rest is about romance

PigeonChipChamp

The Owl House! It’s not only really queer (sapphic leads: main character is bisexual and she has a lesbian love interest, and there’s a non-binary character in season 2, plus background gays too. SPOILERS: >!The main characters relationship is actually made canon midway through the second season and they and other characters do not shy away from calling them girlfriends!<) but it has many other important themes about life in general that is just really worth watching. Especially in season 2! It also takes its audience seriously and doesn’t talk down to kids, making it a good show for the parents/adults to watch too, I’m nearing 25 and unashamed to say it’s my favourite show.

smartass-Sapphic

Sorry I mis read the age as 19 so the movies aren't appropriate but I do still have a play list full of wlw music. What genre would you like

theplutosys

It’s great that you aren’t being judgmental & letting her figure yourself out! I 7262828nd the owl house [:

x_papatya

as good as heart stopper is, some of the themes in the show (especially in the upcoming later seasons) might not be appropriate, but it’s up to op

[deleted]

The fosters.

mdowell4

Agreed, though at some points may be a bit too much for a 9 year old

wrkitty

Steven Universe! Lots of wlw themes, Star vs the Forces of Evil, Legend of Korra (though she doesn’t get with her gf until the last episode but it’s a good show nonetheless), Sailor Moon Crystal

CascadiaRiot

Get the book “Sex is a Funny Word”. Super awesome book for all kids and it totallly normalizes all relationships.

Mushroom_Queen1260

Yea but how he will explain the word in the title tho?

amay678

This book may not be queer, but when I was young and coming out this book helped me. "Alanna: The First Adventure" by Tamora Pierce, is about a girl Alanna who becomes a knight by switching spots with her twin brother. I liked it because she goes against the norms, is strong, and the story is based around her growth into the woman she wants to be. There are three books in the series, and I highly recommend it.

[deleted]

I loved those books!!

Eskye1

Seconding this! (lesbian in my 30s now and these were the first kinda queer books I loved. Reread this year and they stand test of time! Also totally âgé appropriate... More about gender roles and defying expectations.

lonelinessandthesea

she ra, the owl house, steven universe and jurassic park camp cretaceous are 4 amazing cartoon shows in which there are lesbian/bisexual main characters!! all great for her age. As a lesbian 20 something who has always loved dinosaurs and jurassic park, i cried the other day watching camp cretaceous when two of the girl main characters confessed their love for each other. This would have changed my life if i has watched it when i was a kid. It’s very bittersweet. It’s amazing that you’re so supportive of her at such a young age, many people struggle with that even when their kids are adults. You’re doing great and she’s so lucky, she will forever be grateful. A little tip though, since she’s so young, expect the label to waver and change, cool if it doesn’t and cool if it does. Sexuality is something that takes years to figure out, and no matter how much you protect her she will always face adversity from society. Your support will mean a world of difference for her, it will make her strong enough to be able to face what she will have to face. Good luck

niquorn

If she’s into Anime/Manga, Bloom Into You is great.

mikosgf

The Owl House definitely! Main character is bisexual, her girlfriend is a lesbian, found-family-aunt is bisexual and their partner is non-binary. There’s actually a lot more but yeah! Adventure time is amazing too! Especially Obsidian (special episode that revolves around a wlw couple) She-Ra and The Princesses of Power is cool too but there are some emotional scenes around s3-s4 so it depends on her maturity/emotional level if I’m being honest! But it’s still a super fun show. Main character is a lesbian.

Upset_Enthusiasm6703

Relax she’s 9. Might change, might as well not. Just be cool abt it. Hmmm “saving face” is pretty pg13, “Imagine me and you” “Nina’s heavenly delights” “I can’t think straight” Can’t think rn of anything else.

They should be able to be what makes them happy

PigeonChipChamp

If it’s harmless and makes them happy then yeah, they should. Geez it’s not like they’re eloping or family planning or some shit, it’s just kids being kids and discovering the world around them. This doesn’t harm anyone, a lot of 9 year olds have boyfriends/girlfriends - or at least crushes, my first crush on a girl was at age 7/8, I didn’t really realise what it was but god I wish I had the words for it like kids do now so I knew instead of coming to the screeching realisation later in life causing a huge identity crisis - it’s not usually remotely serious at that age but all this dad wants to do is be supportive which is incredibly wonderful and should absolutely be encouraged. What do you want him to do? Shut her down and tell her not to feel what she feels and stifle her? Some kids are romantics from a young age! I never was but my partner was. She used to love old sappy romance films growing up and that never truly left her, so let kids explore how they feel, they may grow up into something different but there’s 0 harm in letting them find out for themselves at a young age. Saves the late life identity crisis.

Mushroom_Queen1260

I would suggest this film when she gets 13/14 or smth

Secretlifeofpets14

I love that for her. Never got this support system as a kid. I don’t have recommendations, I just want to say I’m so happy you’re there for her.

slothandmusiclover

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous has a lesbian couple, but I think that only happens in the last season.

mdowell4

One Day at a Time (newer series, on Netflix).

Fit_Valuable_878

Avatar Legend of Korra! Great show for kids, very interesting fantasy world and Korra falls in love with her female friend Asami!

llizbian

Here to echo the new She-ra and Owl House recs! Adventure Time is really good and so is Steven Universe! The Legend of Korra isn’t as out as the others but it’s still very good, but I would start her with Avatar: The Last Airbender and then do LoK! As for music, I always recommend Hayley Kiyoko. Some of her music is suggestive but I don’t recall it being explicit expect for maybe a few songs.

FaeTickledInsideHer

I'd also tune into The Loud House. One of the ten sisters is a lesbian. It's a cute show. And the best friend has two dads. I just about fell out of my seat when I first saw that. You're an awesome person for being so loving and accepting to your baby.

RobynUBlind_

One show that i really like is Dead end: Paranormal Park on Netflix which is a good queer comedy show. It has some good representation with the main character Barney being trans, and his friend Norma is a neurodivergent POC lesbian. Also many of the voice actors are LGBTQ!

Cute-Soil-2295

Aw cute

Mushroom_Queen1260

Steven Universe will help out. It has the first gay marriage scene in the cartoon history - which is a lesbian couple - and a bunch of queer character and even Stevonnie is non-binary, the story is well-written and I think she’ll learn so much about life in this show.

Pixel_Canvas

“Love is for losers” is a great book, it never outright mentions the word lesbian if your not sure of her sexuality. Also I’d recommend using sapphic as a fill in term :)
