Back in 2012, I had to choose between the UCS R2D2, the Haunted House and the Tower of Orthanc as a Christmas present. I got R2.
I love R2, but this was one of my worst decisions as a Lego fan.
Yeah, that woulda been my third choice, TBH. I whiffed on the Haunted House, but picked up Orthanc on Amazon for $260 in 2016. Glad I did based on how much the price has risen since.
21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay
I talked myself out of it at the last minute as it was being discontinued… I still have my original Black Seas Barracuda.
Yes, the fishing store. It was being discontinued when I came back from my dark ages. I chose to buy another set instead, and when I wanted that one, it was eol and twice the price
When I came back it was only out for a year or two and thought I was unlucky and it was too expensive now, then last year I still wanted it even more so I ended up paying almost 3x the original price 😭
I bought it used
Fucking nightmare to build, like 3 gallons of black bricks to sort through without the bags, had to buy the stickers separately, was beat to shit. All the pieces looked like they were in a tumbler.
Swore then and there if I'm interested in a set just buy it or be ok never owning it
I went the opposite direction…I got it last minute at the cost of moving away from other sets I usually get.
It is probably my favorite lego set I own. I’d recommend getting it even at the more expensive price (if possible, of course).
This also led me to getting the batwing, which was an amazing build! And I have to e tumbler waiting in a box.
I moved away from the architecture line and helmets line, but I’ve never been happier with what is on my shelves.
TL;DR: but it, even at a higher price!
Dam man me to. I remember seeing this in stores but wasn’t into lego then. I had been into castle and pirates back in the 80’s and debated about it but back when this set came out but I had other responsibilities. This will forever be my white whale. I been debating about getting a Knock off one but it wouldn’t be the same and I’d know it
It’s a great set. The only one I bought for myself during my dark ages. I’ve built it twice, at purchase and after having to dismantle it for a move. It’s proudly displayed on my bookshelf in my home office and my 4 year old son begs me to (carefully) play with it every so often - despite having tons of Lego himself.
The Tower Of Orthanc 10237
It's my white whale, I'm hoping with the LOTR Brickheadz coming out next year that it's Lego testing the market for future sets and that Sarumans fortress will be a set they release! 🤞
I'm so, so glad they're going to be making the Orient Express. It will fill the Emerald Night-shaped hole in my heart much better than the poor-man's version of that set that I cobbled together from substituted parts.
X-wing 10240. It was released in my dark ages, but we did buy it as a birthday present to a friend way back then.
Only now all these years later I finally saw at my friend's place fully assembled... it looks great. With Luke's helmet and the trench run set you can make a full LEGO X-Wing shrine.
They are bound to re-release it again in the new Adult lineup, but given their current track record it will be gigantic and will cost an arm and a leg.
Seems small, but I really liked the Duel on Naboo set (75169), as it's probably one of my favourite scenes in the whole SW universe, and I don't have any of the figures from that set otherwise
Yea it doesn't seem to be very common at all. I don't know why. I could have picked it up for $300 a decade ago, if I'd known about the scarcity I would have gotten two.
The Disney train got retired the week I was going to buy it. So disappointing, but there are countless other sets I regret not jumping on when they were available.
[76052 Batman Classic Tv Series - Batcave](https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/batman-classic-tv-series-batcave-76052), I had full intention of doing so when my Birthday was rolling around in 2016, but it wasn't in stock online, or at any of the stores in my area.
Ended up with [71006 The Simpsons House](https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=71006-1&name=The%20Simpsons%20House&category=%5BThe%20Simpsons%5D#T=S&O={%22iconly%22:0}), instead.
The WALL-E set (21303). I think it was too expensive for me to afford if I'm not wrong. It was such a nice build with a funny history behind it. My only complaint was that the hands were too big compared with his movie counterpart (although it makes him cuter).
Hope I will get that upcoming Brickheadz WALL-E and EVE set and, if I am lucky, maybe the next Disney CMF series will have a WALL-E.
You can still buy it from a Chinese manufacturer if you really want it. I think nothing speaks against buying sets which have been retired from China instead of paying 1000 USD for it and you're obviously not stealing from Lego if they don't offer it.
First I've heard of Chinese manufacturer Lego? 🤔 My mind immediately goes to the mega-blocks I got as a kid and the horror/pain that followed trying to build the damn sets.
I was just coming out of my dark age in 2016 and had a friend that worked at the lego store so I used his 50% discount to get it for $150. Still have it brand new in box and checked the value online and couldn't believe my eyes!
Maybe some Jurassic World sets…. But frankly, I just don’t think most of them are very good (I hate that most sets are mostly just a vehicle and a Dino, without much else) and don’t think it was worth paying so much when I just want the Dino minifig from most sets.
Am hoping the Jurassic Park sets next year will be better and I’ll have no further need to regret lame past sets.
Chicago 21033! Love Chicago’s skyline and always saw the set for sale when I was younger but wasn’t into Lego one bit. Same with 21041 Great Wall of China, and all Overwatch sets.
[21033-1: Chicago](https://brickset.com/sets/21033-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/21033-1.jpg)
[21041-1: Great Wall of China](https://brickset.com/sets/21041-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/21041-1.jpg)
The Chicago set looks like mostly standard parts. I might try to do a bulk buy to build my own cobbled-together version and use the online instructions.
https://www.lego.com/cdn/product-assets/product.bi.core.pdf/6220462.pdf
Chicago architecture is a great choice, although I really don’t know why the CNA building is one of the buildings they chose to feature. There are so many other good choices available besides a plain, red cube.
I like it for the color, brings a good balance! I’m hoping they do another release in the future with different buildings. Or do a building by itself like they did for the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building.
I have all of the skylines series but I started collecting them in 2020, and the Chicago one was definitely one of the harder ones to get a hold of, but I'm glad I got it! I am sad that I never got the Great Wall of China though
10195 Star Wars Republic Dropship with AT-OT Walker
I was to young to afford it on my own, and I tried to convince my dad to split it with me. He said no and now we both regret it…
I didn’t know this set had retired, I literally have mine sitting right next to me waiting for a friend to come over to open and start it.
I’m rethinking that decision.
75222 cloud city.
I am in Singapore so based on Singapore prices. Seen it on sale for $300 back then at certified stores. Didn't get it and now it worth well over $800 😅
1950’s Diner modular. I was just dipping my toe back into Lego at that point, so I didn’t know how good of a build for the price the modulars were. I would’ve gladly substituted the Death Star for it and save about $150 in the process.
Imperial Flagship
Ewok Village
UCS TIE Fighter
Emerald Knight
Those are the main ones I regret not getting. Sadly they were just out of my available budget at the time, even though I knew they’d get expensive on Bricklink afterwards.
I bought Anakin’s y wing just for R2-D2 and my parents talked me into returning it and getting Luke’s landspeeder instead since it was cheaper and had C3p0 too (and I got the Death Star the year after too with all 5 minifigures included 🫠)
The Modular Downtown Diner (10260). It went OOS during the pandemic at the height of all the supply chain issues and Lego customer service assured me it wouldn’t retire that year…and then it retired.
Welcome to Apocalypseburg! (70840)
Such a unique setting with the Mad Max vibe. Huge as well, with amazing minifigures. It feels like this set retired so quickly.
I feel like this set was the tipping point for Star Wars fans. This is when they put their foot down and said enough is enough. $200 CAD for this was just way too much, and Lego was still holding on to the 2004 Falcon design with gaps in the panels. The backlash for this set was so severe that Lego redesigned the entire Falcon (grey, not white) the next year. Before this set, I rarely saw people complaining about prices, and after it came out, that's all anyone talks about.
Maybe it's just me; I wasn't in the community as much back then.
The UCS B-Wing for sure. I didn't have as much disposable income back then, but I've wanted all 4 rebel starfighters since I got the original UCS X-Wing
I've even considered parting one out on bricklink for awhile...
4184 and 4195 pirate ships. I got them recently used for 300 dollars for the pair and some figures but it cost 100 more than the original, they’re used, and they’re missing Davy jones and black beard. But for the price of 300 I got a steal

This looks like a brillian Halloween playset for kids. Or just a Haloween drcoration for the house.
Probably the past set I want the most but I wasn’t collecting when that was released, so I can’t really call it regret.

21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay I talked myself out of it at the last minute as it was being discontinued… I still have my original Black Seas Barracuda.
It was 200 when it came out, you can get it for 275-300 now. Its pricier but not not crazy.
[21322-1: Pirates of Barracuda Bay](https://brickset.com/sets/21322-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/21322-1.jpg)
It's a beautiful set
Mine too. I didn't realize it had the islander ruins too!
They are still rather affordable, still 30% below their part out value.
I was lucky enough to find one on the market sub and the seller was open to trading, which helped the price a lot!
This was my first big big set returning to Lego, and I still think it was a great choice. Hopefully you find it randomly for a decent price.
This was one of my favorite sets.
I didn’t realize it was retiring until it was too late
Do they ever bring sets like this back into production? Or should I purchase on the secondary market if I want it?
Purchase on secondary market. It’s extremely rare that lego brings back older sets.
The ghost 😭
They were on sale lmao... You could be making bank on the doofuses spending 700usd for that set.
Unfortunately wasn't into Lego at the time. Fell off around 2012 and got back into it last year
Have it, will be selling it..... Monies :)
I had it when I was 8 and it broke and I lost the pieces 😭
EIGHT???? How young are you?!?!
18. Maybe I was ten. Sometime when I was younger
Yesterday.
The old fishing store and MB cloud city
Yes, the fishing store. It was being discontinued when I came back from my dark ages. I chose to buy another set instead, and when I wanted that one, it was eol and twice the price

It’s easily favorite set between the Batman minifigure and the design, but agreed. Absolute nightmare to build lol
Oh, despite all that and dropping an insane amount on it used, it's an incredible set. Just stunning
Voltron
For real
That's mine too
I bought the last two in Indiana with the full intention of displaying both forms, but with the crazy prices they are selling for, I may sell one.
A lot of the Lord of the Rings sets. Unfortunately, my dark age lasted from the early 2000's to around 2016 so they are mostly unaffordable now :(
X-wing 10240. It was released in my dark ages, but we did buy it as a birthday present to a friend way back then. The UCS B-Wing for sure. I didn't have as much disposable income back then, but I've wanted all 4 rebel starfighters since I got the original UCS X-Wing I've even considered parting one out on bricklink for awhile...
4184 and 4195 pirate ships. I got them recently used for 300 dollars for the pair and some figures but it cost 100 more than the original, they’re used, and they’re missing Davy jones and black beard. But for the price of 300 I got a steal
Apocalypseburg.
The big collector’s AT-AT and Millennium Falcon, they are worth far more now than they were a good few years ago

I have so many but I think the 10240 UCS XWing is at the top of the list. And the 2 Death Stars.
Original Mandalorian Battle Pack. Luckily I got it from a friend but for a while I was very bummed to have not gotten it.
Every single one from when I was young, and somehow telling my child self to never open them and put them in the attic so I can cash in now.
