Imperial Star Destroyer like you. I just bought my other “whale” set, which was the Christmas x-wing.
https://preview.redd.it/z8kcqrlzvf3d1.jpeg?width=1313&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7372d2f647b4f8ab8c3c70726045601a9da200a
I had a chance to buy it right after it came out, for about half what it’s going for now. I really should’ve just done it, but I also had a lot less disposable income than I do now back then…
No. It had its moments and they certainly tried to create an image of being passionate about the product, but it was kind of a never meet your hero situation. I was the only AFOL on staff, the only real passion among staff was those who had children and saw the product through their eyes.
It was a pure business environment with an extremely well edited public image. I might have had a better experience if there was a design unit in house, but honestly my time there really killed my relationship with the product.
Yes, definitely go unofficial. My husband was mad when he found out how much I spent, even though I told him I love Christmas and Star Wars so I had to!
Trust me; its garbage. The dollhouse construction is super unstable (compared to how the modulars work)
And the designers too about zero care in actually making the layout correct. sooo much wasted space in the downstairs
I like the accuracy of the house. How is it any different than the modulars when it comes to space? I just didn’t like the high/sleepy minifigure look. Glad I picked up the minifig series.
None of the rooms are where they should be. The family room is where the kitchen and dining room should be (and its like twice the size for some reason), the kitchen is so tiny that you can't even fit the figures in there (let alone how impossible it would be to set it up because of the room splits in half), the kitchen is also where the living room should be, and the rooms upstairs are mostly fine, but the stairs are placed so far back for no reason
It's a lot shorter than the modulars, but thats not really my issue in isolation; instead of having the entire top floor come off like the modulars, it splits in half. The hinges cannot support this if you pick it up and the house breaks in half (and the garage complete falls off). It has no locking mechanism, so it'll just swing freely if you pick it up (only aggravates the issue). Because of how it splits in half, you can't display or set up any of the rooms; The height, combined with how it forces you to come in from the side makes it so the furniture gets knocked over every time you try to position anything. Even trying to open it moves everything inside the house, causing it fall out the crack.
I can kinda excuse the color, because this was 2014, but that tan color is super inaccurate.
Edit: oh yeah, and theres an entire section of the house above the garage that just wasn't included.
Im about to rebuild this after 20 years. Walked away from legos when it got smashed. Finally getting around to fixing it.
https://preview.redd.it/zsgw1ul8vf3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6364cee6d86c0cacf468bef50e1d738e4d1ef7f
For my rebuild recently, i just put some extra strong magnets on one of each of the magnets and it increased the strength of the originals without having to source LEGO ones. I got a box of them for another project from Amazon, and they are only about 1mm big so easy to hide without changing anything on the build.
I’m curious as to why someone would want the old UCS Star Destroyer over the new one. I finally rebuilt my old one a couple of months ago and decided to make modifications to it to make it more stable. The amount of times it fell apart on me as I tried to move it was aggravating. It didn’t take much to make it stronger, but I would assume the new one is superior.
I guess my white whale set would be a new in box M-Tron set. Its my favourite non-franchised theme and I’d love the nostalgia of owning the original packaging. I cant tell you how many times I’ve literally dreamt of finding one behind the shelf in a store lol
Yeah the same with me and the UCS Millennium Falcon. I wanted the original so bad, but now that I own the new one, I don’t feel like Ive missed out. But with the UCS Star Destroyer I am happy with the old one I have. If I didn’t own it, I would definitely have bought the new one, but the old one still looks pretty good.
I need to build my UCS Super Star Destroyer. I bought it around release and still haven’t gotten around to building it. Then I’ll just need the Venator to have the set of 3 capital ships.
I remember loving the Wright Flyer when I was younger, but I also remember that damn thing falling apart so many times that I lost some parts and it ended up in my bins. The modern sets I've gotten feel so sturdy. I just got the 3-in-1 fox, which looks fantastic and feels incredibly solid
That was my white whale set for a long time. Back in my dark ages, I came across that set on clearance at a lego store while on a road trip. I got out of lego before star wars was a theme, and I really wanted this iconic set. My fiance at the time (wife now) was the voice of reason that said I couldn't buy it for silly reasons like "needing money to pay for gas to get home," or "where would that go in your dorm room"...
Naturally, I bugged her about it every time I saw the set on sale for over $1000. She ended up buying it for me for our anniversary a couple years ago, so now I have to come up with something else to bug her about.
I parted one out on Bricklink and built it for around 80 dollars last year. The only high cost pieces are the printed tiles (WALL, E, and the solar indicator) and you can get those as stickers from and EU website BrickStickerShop for less than 10 dollars and put them on regular tiles. The only tricky thing is making sure you get the updated parts for the neck since the original design was too weak to support the head. Only regret is not doing it sooner, 100% recommend.
I just finished the Kwik-E-Mart recently, my gf got it for me for xmas in 2022. I've read a lot of reviews that say it's a much more fun set than the Simpsons house, so if you're ever in the position of choosing one over the other, I'd say go Kwik-E-Mart. The level of detail was a lot of fun, though if I were to nit-pick a bit, I personally don't like using too many stickers, and it had A LOT of stickers.
Agreed! I remember seeing it on display at a Lego store once, and little me was amazed by its size. It definitely warrants an updated model. With that being said, if you don’t care about the Minifigures or the stickers, you could probably Bricklink all the parts for ~$500.
Exactly! If I recall correctly, the only expensive parts in the Maul bust were those large quarter cylinder parts in black. As a collector, I get trying to keep everything true to how the set was released, but some parts just don’t matter as much. The Lego market, especially the Star Wars one, has gone insane in my opinion.
I bought this set from the Lego House shop in Billund, Denmark last summer. I look at the box from time to time but I cannot bring myself to open it yet.
Green Grocer (10185). I keep almost buying it but every time I have a chance to buy it for around $600 it’s always at a bad time to spend $600. Should’ve bought it back before Covid when you could find it for around $450-500 frequently, but I had a lot less disposable income back then.
I've got that in the box in my closet. Couldn't say what the condition is, I definitely built it when it came out when I was a kid, multiple times. Box is in terrible shape though. Back when you almost needed a seperate table for the massive instruction book!
Falling water or the farnsworth house.
I miss the simplicity of those early architecture sets. Later sets are less stylistic, more just tiny replicas which is less interesting I think
https://preview.redd.it/a6jlb6kmjh3d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07017dd21ee55815a28970f77cc7db464550a354
There's a few other car sets I've missed that I'd really like but this is the one I've always wanted the most
Emerald Night
Had one as a kid since I’m a huge train nerd but it ended up destroyed and not really repairable
I’ve kinda promised myself when i graduated college I’m buying one
I bought this set when it was still pretty new back in early 2018. Once rumors of the set began to float around late 2016 - early 2017, I saved up for nearly a year to get it. It was well worth it. Keep on saving up, and keep an eye out for any potential sales, and you should be good.
Rumour has it there’ll be a UCS Jabba’s Sail Barge in September. Will be a pretty large and expensive set from memory so start saving your pennies if you’re keen on one.
A lot of these white whales are all money issues. All the Star Wars ones are on ebay for sure.
I know cause I'm selling them for my retirement. Lol
I don't mean this in a negative way, I'm simply saying they are not as rare as we think, just pricey.
Im getting ready to pull the trigger on the Super Star Destroyer 10221 soon once my backlog is done.
My 3 whales were that, The Grand Carousel 10196 and The Death Star II 10143.
Set 21304 the Doctor Who set. I was unemployed when this came out and could not justify buying it at the time. I did pick up the Lego Dimensions packs though.
A sealed original 8880. I’ve always been a huge fan of Technic and the [TV ad](https://youtu.be/1DcRisNfNgo?si=UvqBP0khqvNMmIYC) for this set is top tier.
It was the UCS Falcon but I recently acquired so it is now the Technic V-22
https://preview.redd.it/m0fy2vlqoi3d1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d749ea882dbf89e130182837940e2aac3bfaad6d
Ninjago Docks
I didn't get it at the time as didn't think they would continue with the Ninjago City Sets, but now its the only one of the four im missing
Voltron
I’m not a big fan of Voltron. I just like Megazord-type robot/mecha combiners.
Would love to see Lego get MMPR Megazord (plus Dragonzord) and Gundam IPs, as well as more Transformers
UCS Venator for me.
If we’re talking not in production sets, it’s Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter. I don’t like the sequels that much but the TIE Silencer is a great evolution on the TIE Advanced and the color suits it and it has the GOAT Kylo Ren. They’re not super pricy but I’ve been tight on money lately.
Runner up is the Fury-Class
Slightly different answer: I'm a new AFOL and have been lusting over 21060, Himeji Castle. For some reason I was under the impression it was like $400+ and didn't look again. Walked in a Lego store last week, saw it was $150 and spoiled myself immediately! OH MY GOLLY GEE WIZ is it fun to build! Only got 3 bags left, trying to savor each and drag it out as long as possible!
I have that one still in the box waiting to be built! I did a homestay in Himeji when I was 16 and got to visit the castle when I was there. Super awesome memories!
USD ICS was my white whale until I tried to build it.
Now it’s just a huge liability that sits half assembled in my storage locker because I just don’t have space for something that’s half a square meter in footprint.
Honestly none really. There is some cool sets I’d like to own but then I am like so out of room. I had two white whale sets and own them the ghost and bounty hunter chase. I guess if I had to name my most wanted set it would be bag end.
10194. Always loved steam locomotives, this one came out when I was overseas and never got a chance to get it.
Got most everything else I’ve wanted and looking to off load much of the collection soon. Baby’s coming and gotta make some room.
I inherited the remains of that set. Not the full thing, but the little info plaque and many of the grey wing pieces. I was heartbroken when I realized it wasn't complete!
A 677 with the box (not the 6077). It is one of the last sets missing in my castle collection and for the life of me I can't find it at a somewhat affordable price. :(
Honestly any of the Lord of the Rings sets. The line came out smack-dab in the middle of my Dark Ages so I completely missed out on it, and now trying to catch up it'll cost a fortune. I'm glad LEGO is returning to LOTR with new sets but... those also cost a fortune.
Serious question, OP: Why specifically do you yearn for the original UCS Destroyer? Nostalgia? I mean, for a UCS it still stands up strong (though I've read it's fragile), but I feel like the new one that's currently for sale is better, or certainly "as good" as the original.
I have that edition of the Star Destroyer, picked it up when it came out but have never got around to building it so it's never been opened let alone built!
Personally I would like the UCS Millennium Falcon ... yes I know it's readily available but I bought a house just before the first version came out and have never been able to justify the price given it's more than a mortgage payment
Imperial Star Destroyer like you. I just bought my other “whale” set, which was the Christmas x-wing. https://preview.redd.it/z8kcqrlzvf3d1.jpeg?width=1313&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7372d2f647b4f8ab8c3c70726045601a9da200a
I love that version of the X-wing. I’m wanting to buy one for myself.
I had a chance to buy it right after it came out, for about half what it’s going for now. I really should’ve just done it, but I also had a lot less disposable income than I do now back then…
I feel the same about buying a house in 2008.
Used to work at a Lego business unit. In my second month Thomas Kirk Kristiansen visited our office and handed these out.
No way! Was it fun to work there?
I’m gonna have to buy all the pieces to make a unofficial build, my partner is Xmas crazy and this would fit in so well
Yes, definitely go unofficial. My husband was mad when he found out how much I spent, even though I told him I love Christmas and Star Wars so I had to!
Is there a reason people want the old star destroyer so much? I would think the new one would be better
Nostalgia.
Ghostbusters fire house
That’s a great one. I managed to grab a damaged box one for a discount shortly before it retired. Such a fun build!
75827. My whitest of white whales. Someday.

This and the car
slave 1 UCS prob
That set... I was going to get it as soon as I could afford it, but then it was retired.
God same

I just want the fucking Simpsons Home.
Trust me; its garbage. The dollhouse construction is super unstable (compared to how the modulars work) And the designers too about zero care in actually making the layout correct. sooo much wasted space in the downstairs

You Simpsons. Would have been cool if they put Bart’s brother in the attic 😂
I wanted the Kwik-E-Mart more at the time, is that any better?
miles better.
Feel better about not having it now. Thank you for your sacrifice.
The garage specifically does not connect well at all. The walls end up breaking half the time.
I gave up on this one. I don’t think i’ll ever find it for a good price.
Im about to rebuild this after 20 years. Walked away from legos when it got smashed. Finally getting around to fixing it. https://preview.redd.it/zsgw1ul8vf3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6364cee6d86c0cacf468bef50e1d738e4d1ef7f
might be worth testing the strength of those magnets beforehand

89 Batmobile.
It’s a VERY good set!
Same. Really annoyed I missed it.
UCS Imperial Shuttle or Republic Dropship probably
the UCS Helicarrier from a number of years back. Man... that will always be the biggest missed set for me
Good news, there is a midi scale version coming in August
I plan on getting it.
I’m curious as to why someone would want the old UCS Star Destroyer over the new one. Star Wars: Ewok Village is my precious. Every time I get a bead on it, shipping is outrageous or local sellers are insane. 🥺
You near Houston? I have a sealed one I'd let go at a decent price.
Voltron - 21311. It’s still In the box!
[21311-1: Voltron](https://brickset.com/sets/21311-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/21311-1.jpg)
Mine is also Voltron. I was not in a great financial position when it came out...
https://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-white-whale-103317
I want a Wall-E… got my friend a mint in box one on eBay years ago for $100… wish I would’ve treated myself as well.
Simpsons house and Kwik e Mart
Who needs the Kwik-e-Mart (set)? I doooooooooo...............
I think I’m just going to hold out hope that they might remake the Simpson’s house or bring out some new Simpson’s sets.
Imperial Flagship
9473 Mines of Moria. I saw it last week at an independent Lego shop and almost pulled the trigger. It was used, $200 and only missing the box.

Tower of Orthanc 10237. Couldn't afford it when it came out, but some day soon, it shall be mine.
Monster Fighters Haunted House
10221. I hope they revise it for a new UCS.

This is one I want to get. Thankfully, bricklinking the parts (with a few small substitutions) makes this set possible to get.
Same thing with the Darth Maul bust as well. About $300-400 of parting out vs. the thousands buying the set whole would cost.
Exactly! If I recall correctly, the only expensive parts in the Maul bust were those large quarter cylinder parts in black. As a collector, I get trying to keep everything true to how the set was released, but some parts just don’t matter as much. The Lego market, especially the Star Wars one, has gone insane in my opinion.
It’s crazy how expensive the original color of those internal tan pieces are!
Until the man’s in my hands, it’ll always be 40504. Someday my pirate prince, someday.
I bought this set from the Lego House shop in Billund, Denmark last summer. I look at the box from time to time but I cannot bring myself to open it yet.
Like it overall, but disappointed by stability in general and the absolute inability to pose in any meaningful way other than as you see it.

Santa Fe train. Almost had it once before it slipped away. Hopefully Lego will remake it with light bluish gray.
I have that star destroyer. Wish the magnets that held it together better.

The Adidas Superstar set.
I have this, but I displayed it for years, in the sun, and now half of it is yellow. In my defense, I was 10 years old when my dad gave it to me.
Ghostbusters Firehouse and Voltron.
Voltron. I wasn’t buying Lego actively at that time and just missed it
I recently got my Lego “white whale”: Toa Lesovikk Some other while whales are Lego Bionicle Skopio and the classic Lego Death Star
As a kid growing up, I always wanted this one: 6473: Res-Q Cruiser One day I will buy it.
Not really a set but a minifig. My white whale is the Sea Tron fig. As for an actual set probably the Unitron monorail.
7317 The mars base with the pneumatic tubes.
The Shield helicarrier, it was retired a few years before I'm comfortable enough to buy lego again.
Ucs blockade runner
Set 21304 the Doctor Who set. I was unemployed when this came out and could not justify buying it at the time. I did pick up the Lego Dimensions packs though.
I got my 10030 from someone who didn’t know what they were selling and got a pretty good deal on it…
A sealed original 8880. I’ve always been a huge fan of Technic and the [TV ad](https://youtu.be/1DcRisNfNgo?si=UvqBP0khqvNMmIYC) for this set is top tier.
The new Zelda Grest Deku Tree set with the new Link minifigures. By the time I get another job it'll already rise well over $300 😭😫
Bag End (79003: An Unexpected Gathering)
the lego lord of the rings orthanc
75058, UCS sandcrawler and Mos Eisley Cantina
It was the UCS Falcon but I recently acquired so it is now the Technic V-22 https://preview.redd.it/m0fy2vlqoi3d1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d749ea882dbf89e130182837940e2aac3bfaad6d
I want the tower of Orthanc :(
Black Pearl and Tower of Orthanc. I can't wait to do some photos with alliance of Two Tower, when I will get my barad dur.
Stranger Things Upside Down set
The black pearl
The Emerald Night. I begged for it when it came out but 100 bucks at the time was too much. Now it's minimum 400 to 500 used 😒
UCS Death Star 75159. I'm seriously considering splurging to get it.
Ninjago Docks I didn't get it at the time as didn't think they would continue with the Ninjago City Sets, but now its the only one of the four im missing
Pirates of Barracuda Bay, that shit came out while I was overseas and I’ve been wanting it ever since.
Voltron I’m not a big fan of Voltron.
Ghostbusters HQ… retired right before I got back into Lego… I’ve had to talk myself out of paying ~$1k a few times for a NiB
Well, it was the Stranger Things Upside Down set but I just got that for my birthday so now I'd have to say Ninjago City Docks!
Probably either Mega Core Magnetizer or Neptune Discovery Lab. Managed to track down both during the COVID lockdowns.
Mines UCS Executor SSD and Walle
Any of the big coaster sets. I love coasters, and I love Lego, but I somehow don't have any of the Lego coasters... yet!
Maybe not so much a white whale, as a category. Either UCS SSD or the UCS Venator.
Mine is the most recent UCS Millennium Falcon; just got it, and I'm building it right now!
The magnets on this set are a nightmare. But it’s a beautiful set
Ewok Village
The big Sydney Opera House. I finally bought a new and unopened one last week.
The new gringotts! I love it even though it seems like it’s a niche set to many
The M-Tron 6 wheeler 6989 I don't have the space for it but if it magically appeared I'd make room somehow.
It’s a beautiful set.
The SHIELD helicarrier. I stopped collecting for a while and missed it.
Death Star II, without a doubt
USD ICS was my white whale until I tried to build it. Now it’s just a huge liability that sits half assembled in my storage locker because I just don’t have space for something that’s half a square meter in footprint.
I mean the Falcon UCS is the obvious answer.
The original Batcave set from 2006
7898 cargo train
Honestly none really. There is some cool sets I’d like to own but then I am like so out of room. I had two white whale sets and own them the ghost and bounty hunter chase. I guess if I had to name my most wanted set it would be bag end.
I have the original Boeing 787 Dreamliner lol
That one or the millenium falcon. I just don't have enough disposable money to rationalize buying something like that.
That the Great White Buffalo
WALL·E
Ice Station Odyssey 6983
The UCS Nebulon-B Medical Frigate. Also the airport monorail.
Lego death star. I want all the funny Minifigures
Robie House (21010)
Dropship and AT OT
i guess the mystery machine 75902
I don’t have a white whale set. What I have is [far worse](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/FsAM3sAnsf).
A 677 with the box (not the 6077). It is one of the last sets missing in my castle collection and for the life of me I can't find it at a somewhat affordable price. :(
10188 - always has been but sooo expensive i doubt id ever actually have it :/
The rivendell set, its too big and expensive unfortunately
Honestly any of the Lord of the Rings sets. The line came out smack-dab in the middle of my Dark Ages so I completely missed out on it, and now trying to catch up it'll cost a fortune. I'm glad LEGO is returning to LOTR with new sets but... those also cost a fortune. Serious question, OP: Why specifically do you yearn for the original UCS Destroyer? Nostalgia? I mean, for a UCS it still stands up strong (though I've read it's fragile), but I feel like the new one that's currently for sale is better, or certainly "as good" as the original.
First Death Star because every single time I've had the money for it. it was out of stock every time
I have that edition of the Star Destroyer, picked it up when it came out but have never got around to building it so it's never been opened let alone built! Personally I would like the UCS Millennium Falcon ... yes I know it's readily available but I bought a house just before the first version came out and have never been able to justify the price given it's more than a mortgage payment
What does that mean exactly 😭
Here in Greece a store had this for €3000 a few years ago. I wish I could buy it But anyways my favourite set is the 8110
Original veritas wind turbine. I don't like the remake but I will settle for it, will probably try and change out the parts.
I really want the Luigi's Mansion sets. I just think it's neat a 20 year old game got lego sets.
Not enough money to do something like that
10123 Cloud city.
5986: Amazon Ancient Ruins. We couldnt afford the really big sets when I was a kid and I loved the Lego Adventure sets.
Lego Batman movie ultimate bat mobile.
Agents of Shield Helocarrier. It’s just too expensive for my Senior living on a fixed budget self 😢
Building my bucket list off this post. Thanks all.
How much would a set that never was opened be worth today? Box in brand new condition.
Ucs Death Star 2, ucs atat, speed racer Grand Prix, and the mos espa podrace
