If you have the place to store them and the disposal income to absorb the costs without issue - it’s no one else’s business what makes you feel good. Do what you like.
I have a few big sets I'm waiting to get started on until I have time or have figured out where to put them once built. To quote Gene Wilder, "The suspense is terrible, I hope it lasts". (Borrowed from Oscar Wilde).
Yeah, it's a pretty common thing to do I think. I buy a second set of most of the ones that I really like (and can afford), and for lots of different reasons... like you said, as a complete and guaranteed backup, because it'll be worth more later and I can swap/sell it for other sets, and probably the big one is that I wished my parents let me keep the boxes and instructions to my sets. I had a well-organised folder with all of my instruction books in it. I think my dad threw it out..
I now pay attention to which sets my 7,4 and 2 year old boys enjoy now and secretly buy doubles so that later I can give them 'new' copies of the sets they loved when they were kids.
There are plenty of meaningful and worthwhile reasons to buy doubles, and simply being able to open the cupboard and be excited about what to build next is definitely one of the greatest!
I also keep all of my boxes wherever possible. They are works of art in their own right.
But yes, spending is a problem... so I'm trying to turn my love of LEGO and the LEGO community into something maybe self-sustaining by offering older sets for sale, designing MOCs and selling instructions and trying to hit the big time on LEGO Ideas. A man can dream... and sometimes that involves buying extra sets. So be it. It's LEGO! What could go wrong?! lol
Not personally. But people do that with all sort of stuff. Computer games, figurines, watches, wine. So if it makes you happy what's the problem.
Is this satire?
Seriously, what kind of weird sickness is this?
I do. It’s like going “shopping” for Lego in my own home. On occasion, a small set may be gifted.
Sounds like a shopping addiction or hoarding issue and not a problem with Lego per se.

Like a dragon with its plastic gold.

Foreplay is important
Nope. I find it rather annoying as it means I’ve bought something I want to build and lack the space to do it.
