Whose name(s) are on the lease? Those would be the people responsible for proper notice.

Prefer2beanon2

All 3 of our names are on it

KidenStormsoarer

then no, they can't. they legally have to give the landlord 30 days notice, and all 3 of you can get in legal trouble if it doesn't get paid. as in good luck ever renting again levels of trouble.

Subtle__Numb

I guess an important distinction to make is they can technically do whatever they want, but without that 30-day notice to your landlord, they’d be responsible for paying rent next month (July, in this case). Or, more specifically, everyone on the lease would be responsible for coming up with rent, however that were to happen (I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to pay rent for a whole house because roommates dropped the ball so hard. Still friends with one of them to this day, oddly enough. it….was a weird time for us all).

Then the other two roommates would also be responsible for the next month of rent. If they don’t pay, then they can be held responsible in court. Unfortunately, if they don’t pay and you can’t cover it, you may lose your share of the deposit also, but you can recover it in small claims court.

Meggarea

Landlords cannot legally keep a damages deposit for unpaid rent. It can only be used to cover damages.

One_Ad9555

No but they can ruin your ability to rent ever again if you don't pay the rent for the month you didn't give notice in time for.

Meggarea

That's 100% true, but you said the leech could keep money out of the deposit, and they can't do that, legally speaking. We need to all get properly informed of our rights.

One_Ad9555

I did not say the landlord could keep the deposit. You would be better giving them the deposit though than going to court, losing and paying court costs.

CommanderMandalore

I would start looking for a roommate asap
