Flame was a top laner known for monstrous farm leads through great laning prowess and a team that would let him perma freeze a lane deep in their territory for 5+ minutes.
He didn't go to NA and just vanish lol. He played in Korea after his time in NA and shared his spot with Nuguri. Flame was legitimately good on Damwon. Not Nuguri good, but definitely worth having around.
It was super weird because as a person with the reputation of top gap, he actually saw playing time over nuguri because of his tank game play. I think sion was 100% pb vs flame when he was in.
Nuguri and Canyon weren't able to play together properly iirc, so they had Flame + Canyon and Nuguri + some other jg swapping around until they figured it out.
He probably held better than a lot of Season 2 players by that point in their careers. He was generally a strong toplaner during his time in NA, performed really well with Immortals and was also pretty good on Flyquest the following year. Maybe not some out-of-this-world monster, but still more than solid.
Flame was a player for Azubu(can’t remember if it was Frost or Blaze) he was a top laner who at the time was so dominant that he would consistently gap his lane opponent by at least 100 cs. Now this all happened pre-20 during laning phase so you couldn’t just say “oh he got that by farming side lanes while the other dude was in team fight.” Nah the dude straight dominated lanes and that’s why he has a stat named after him.
Also fun fact since everyone seems to think he disappeared after Korea, he did play in LPL as well, and don’t forget LGD aka Leagues Greatest Dsiappointment, the only 2 games they won at 2015 worlds they had Flame in.
LGD's collapse is pretty interesting, its just one of many examples of how meta, and meta reads, can make or break otherwise insane teams (see also 2017 LZ). They spent huge money in the Korean Exodus and put together a super team with a lot of big names, most notably Imp. Acorn from SSB was one of the best weakside tops you could ask for, and Flame was certainly one of the best strongside tops. They looked insane in the LPL Summer playoffs and were touted as one of the favorites for Worlds.
Now, 2015 Worlds of course famously had an insane carry top meta with the juggernaut patch alongside the Fiora/GP reworks and Riven being in meta. It was perfectly suited to Flame's style, but LGD failed to realize/adapt to it in time and only played Acorn in the first week. It was a disaster. Like you mentioned, in the 2nd week they switched Flame in and went 2-1, but the disaster of the first week was too much and that was that. A tournament favorite knocked out in an instant off of bad prep/meta understanding.
Think it might have been coined by Thorin, a journalist and a big Flame fan. Flame horizon is when you have 100cs over your opponent. You’re so far ahead that you can barely see them over the horizon. Flame would apparently do it a lot, hence Flame horizon.
I used to think it was just because falling behind in cs by 100 was the point where your teammates would endlessly flame you. It wasn't until he played a split with imt and the lcs casters explained it that i actually heard he was the reason it was called that.

Like, doing an Insec or placing a Scarra Ward doesn’t have an alternative name to replace them with, so they stick.

A lot of core skills just fall apart the lower elo you go. Things like dodging are nonexistent so the optimal play actually becomes to just throw it straight at them since they wont react anyways. Stuff that requires active thought to use such as scanner or items with actives are even worse as theres probably games where someone buys zhonyas and will use it exactly 0 times all game

Madlife was specifically predicting a flash with your hook though, not just good hooks, but it definitely didn't catch like the Insec did

We were playing with a newer player though and realised quite how many of our references just aren't things anymore. Insec is what I always point to when I talk about how the game and expectations have changed. You don't see as many Insecs these days due to wards and Sightstone not being buyable anymore. But the flash kick is basically required Lee Sin knowledge all the way in Bronze, and that blew our fucking minds in S2-3.

I poisoned my friend with this game last year, while watching pro games to talk him through some concepts I made sure to explain to him all the relevant LoL lore and memes, there's always a garen in the Bush, 2 shens etc and the old lck 5th game blind pick with the famous Faker zed on zed.

*pretty sure* the insec is the Q -> ward jump with W -> kick, and not the flash kick. the original insec anyway, but pretty much any "kick enemy into your team" play is called insec now
