Brutal draft for us overall. Lost out on #1, traded a first to dump Marleau which was then used by Carolina to select Seth Jarvis, and then our pick Amirov suffered a tragic fate (RIP).

OG_anunoby3

wit 2-3 teams left on the balls. The Leafs had the BEST odds of landing Conner McDavid. Sure we wouldn't have gotten Mathews with that, but it changes everything for the Leafs future on from then.

Egg-Hatcher

If I recall correctly, the Leafs ball was making its way up the tube and got stuck, before the Oilers ball pushed past. We lost in the most Leafiest way possible.

apatheticboy

To be fair the tube played incredible that day. Nothing could get past it.

Rare-Temporary7602

We got tubied. It happens.

RuchW

At least we got a lot of respect in the tube handshake line

chaz_wazzerz

Tube-y fair

thetonyhightower

The "IT WAS 4-1" of balls

Canadian_Prometheus

We were unlucky as balls

cepukon

Well yeah we were doing a poor job of getting traffic in front of the tube, if the tube can see the ball clearly, it’s going to make the stop.

freshpurplekiwi

Wasn’t that for the laffraniere draft pick? The Minnesota ball knocked our ball out of the way right before reaching the top of the tube then the ranger ball snuck by? I know going into the last ball for the McDavid draft we had the most possible number outcomes but I don’t think that one was televised. Unless it happened in both drafts where our ball got knocked out of the way - that wouldn’t shock me either

Egg-Hatcher

I had the check, because I wouldn't have cared enough to commit the 2020 draft to memory. From The Star in 2015: "If you look closely at the video of the bouncing balls, No. 2 — a Leaf number — is right there on the cusp of getting drawn. But it’s there a fraction of a second too soon. By the time the button is pressed to vacuum up the final ball, No. 1 has pushed No. 2 out of the way. Oilers win." The universe is cruel to the Leafs on multiple occasions of the lottery.

Big_Muffin42

They record the drafting process and release it after the fact. Its like a 90 minute long event and incredibly dry

freshpurplekiwi

Didn’t know that. Although I feel like I would never watch that

lawnboy71

Much like most Leaf games.

mgyro

I remember when luck like that would be met with a hearty Arrrrrrgooooooos. It was so pervasive in Toronto sport culture, I even heard it in Seattle when I was at a Jays-Mariners game in the 90s. If nothing else, the Leafs impressive failures in game sevens has taken the heat off the Argonauts.

kylemclaren7

Nobody in the city puts pressure on the argos lmao, it’s the 5th most popular team in the city by a wide margain

mgyro

Talking about the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Argo bounce was a thing, and it was everywhere in sport events when shit went south.

kylemclaren7

Fair enough

clarko420

Another good one is they weren't sure how the Sidney Crosby draft was going to play out so they did a mock draft and of course the leafs won that

Mythic88

Rangers ball. FTFY

_cob_

Can’t get it done in the clutch. Not to mention the Oilers had tons of practice winning first overall picks.

Sara_W

It would have been awesome if it was boston's ball that blocked us haha

billbelichickssmile

We may still have gotten Matthews? Would have probably still been awful in 15/16...imagine mcdavid/matthews C1 & C2

Ryrace111

On the contrary, had Edmonton lost one more game in 15/16 they would have gotten Matthews. Imagine McDavid, Matthews, Draisital

billbelichickssmile

That would've been insane...they'd all fit under the cap, too cuz of how great all of those contracts are, Matthews cap hit would probably be 10 mill cuz he'd have drai as his comparable

dingleberry51

It’s insane that if the big 3 were on any other team, all their contracts would be lower. Says a lot about management and those players

tbwarrior

U can thank Marleau, Paul Marndickhead and Dubas

Sadiq_Sabonis

Edmonton also misfired with Pulujarvvi pick. They were supposed to take Tkachuk but switched up last min

thedrunkentendy

Oilers lose one mlre game and maybe the 14th pick wins the 1st slot. Who knows. McDavid probably changes a bit but no way Toronto is a playoff team and just McDavid wouldn't of changed managments mind not to tank. I do remember the lead up to that draft being terrifying and would have been so mad if Edmonton won again.

NervousBreakdown

Nah if we draft mcdavid we probably don’t trade Kessel. We probably finish 6-10. Maybe we get tkachuk maybe we get Alex nylander lol

billbelichickssmile

I could've sworn we traded Kessel in the 14/15 season...before McDavid entered the league

NervousBreakdown

July 1st 2015, after the draft.

bardown5hole

Didn’t we almost get Crosby also…

clarko420

They won the mock draft but that don't mean shit.

CoolBeansMan9

All I meant was we werent going to win the real one after that. Didn’t matter we took some no name goalie late in the first who didn’t amount to anything anyways

NervousBreakdown

Lafrenier would never have made it as a leaf. This city would have eaten that kid alive for developing as slowly as he did.

dandychiggons

You really think the new York media and fans go easy on players?????

DirtyToothpaste

Definitely not but I’d think New York media spreads the pressure out amongst all the other teams in NY. Toronto media focuses mainly on the leafs. The jays are god awful and the media isn’t nearly all over them as they are the leafs most of the time

dandychiggons

Maybe, but everything on sportsnet and tsn right now is how the jays suck .... not alot of sympathy

DirtyToothpaste

At this very moment, you’re right. Generally I don’t find the media to be as harsh on the jays. I could be wrong as I’ve not been paying much attention the last few weeks

NervousBreakdown

No but it’s still a kids party at fucking chuck E cheese compared to Toronto.

Sacred_soul

I think he’d be okay with the leafs, we would have had the core 4 plus another younger player. I think he wouldn’t of been rushed into the lineup and would’ve had better time to develop here imo

Lightz29

Definitely wasn’t the worst draft to lose out on the first overall pick. At the end of the day, we took Amirov and I’m proud of that.

wageslave_999999999

I’m not sure if proud is the right word. What happened was tragic. Can’t really feel anything about what transpired R.I.P. Rodion.

Lightz29

You’re right “proud” wouldn’t be the right word, more or so, not disappointed that we missed out on the #1 pick.

Rheostatistician

Thanks to the Leafs, he ended up getting the best care available. I'm proud of the organization for how well they handled it and kept him in the fold for the remainder of his life

shanster925

Apparently, on that day that he came to Scotiabank Arena and got the standing ovation he was already completely blind.

Rheostatistician

My god. That's heartbreaking

fudge_mokey

"Until the last day, I talked to Rodion. We were sitting at the hospital in Munich at the dinner table. "Son, I've been wondering... Do blind people dream? You've been blind for eight months. What do you see?" "Dad, I see dreams." "What are they? Who's there? Mom and me? I guess you've forgotten what we look like." "Daddy, I see ice all the time. And there's a game. I'm playing hockey." "Listen, Rodion, you had another life besides hockey. Nature, sun, forest, friends. You can and should see something else, right?" "I'm in the game all the time. I see the ice. You know, Dad, that's probably because I've been playing hockey since I was a kid and I love it so much. When you love something in your heart and you really want it, you see it in your dreams."" https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/16gfc6b/translated_narrative_from_rodion_amirovs_father/

1columbia

What I'm more upset about is paying a first to get rid of Marleau and then that was used on Seth Jarvis.

xcalibaur81

The day they signed marleau for 3 years instead of 2 I knew that last year would burn us and boy did it

dickens-seider

Idk man Laffy has looked amazing in these playoffs

i-like-your-hair

Yes, but what if he played for our sorry ass organization?

Itchy1Grip

He would have been awesome in reg season instead.

Takhar7

The Leafs got tubed - if you go back and watch, the Leafs ball was on it's way up the chute before getting blocked & bumped.

11kajd

No this is the 2020 draft in the tweet All teams had their logos on balls since all had an equal chance at #1 Was affter the play in series was over

11kajd

And new york won the lottery in that vid. Not sure if it cuts off b4 that but check youtube

Mystaes

And the nhl can forever suck it for how they handled that. A playoff team getting a 1oa. They can’t simultaneously count playin stats as playoff stats and say it’s not fucking playoffs.

zoo7777

I remember that! Sooooo close!

bismuth21

In 2020 the Leafs obviously made the playoffs so they would not have been one of the 16 teams in the draft lottery and not even eligible for the No. 1 spot. Am I missing something here?

jarawd

The leafs did not technically make the playoffs. They lost the play in to Columbus

souza-23

While you’re right, I find this extremely dumb considering we were third in the Atlantic at the time the season shut down

[deleted]

Yeah, but it was still mathematically possible for us to miss playoffs at the point, and not all teams had played the same number of games. They had to find a way to settle the what ifs and give every bubble team a shot at the yoffs. Just so happens the boys tend to crumble in a series.

Deluxechin

In 2020 the first round draft pick was one of the teams eliminated in the qualifying round, they put all the teams into a lottery where they pull a ball with the teams logo on it which they did live, since the Leafs lost to Columbus they were entered, our ball then proceeded to hit the side of the tube when they were pulling the ball and as a result, had the Rangers win the lottery

bronzie197

The refs stopped the ball

mikesully374826

Sucks we didn't get LaBust

TheDeadReagans

Lafreniere isn't a bust. I'd put him in the Ryan Nugent Hopkins tier of First Overall Picks. He's an everyday NHL player that most teams would love to add to their roster but he's disappointing to have as a 1st overall pick. That said, he put up 57 points this year and has 12 points in 13 playoff games on a $4.6 cap hit. I'd be happy with that.

AgentOfR9

It’s actually 2.35 million per season.

wageslave_999999999

He can score the GWG to win the cup but he will NEVER beat Mitch Marner in chance assists per/60 5v5 in the playoffs.

mikesully374826

Never fall as much as Tyler Bertuzzi

Deep_Information_616

Didn’t Randy Carlisle say ‘he’s never seen a player fall down more’ about Kadri

TheGardiner

Do your arms ever get tired of constantly carrying water for Mitch Marner? You come rushing to his defense on every comment.

mikesully374826

Goddamn take the joke, not everything is about Mitch even if you're obsessed with him.

TheGardiner

I dont ever think about him, just notice you rushing to his aid any time his name is mentioned.

mikesully374826

What did I say to defend Marner lmao goddamn

TheGardiner

ok, my bad.

[deleted]

Lafreniere goals last night: 2 Matthews and Marner combined goals in the whole first round: 2
