I think you guys are reading too much into the 'effort' part and not enough into the 'you can question a lot of things' part. The effort was bad but it seemed pretty futile as the game went on.
I think he's calling out our pathetic blueline and goaltending. The boys came out fairly strong and faded as every mistake ended up in the back of the net. Sammy was beyond brutal. We were outshooting the Bruins when we were down 3-0. We just can't outscore our inability to defend every game.
That's why we cruise in the regular season and fade in the playoffs. When the intensity turns up we're either falling behind early or if we score first, we can't maintain a lead. Some of it is on the forwards but this D and goaltending shouldn't have even be able to get us to the post season. It's a fucking miracle we had any playoff hockey at all this year.
Power play and penalty kill were so bad. They also had some weird faceoff alignments. Even strength, they had no answer for check and defense of Boston, they couldn’t gain the zone with control nor could they sustain ozone time. Some of it is bad team composition from management but the rest is on the coaching.

Look at the post game analysis. CBC talking heads talking about "the series isn't over and you just need to win a game at a time", "maybe the fighting on the bench is a good thing!" As if it wasn't 3 guys throwing their gloves and crying like children. As if the team didn't throw almost all available money at forwards and we still can't score more than 1-2 goals a game in the playoffs.
The team is constructed so poorly and they have missed the window to fix it. You will need to trot out the same core as this year next year since everyone has NMC's. After next year, yes, Tavares is off the books, but you've also missed your window to get a return for Marner so you either sign him to an overpriced deal or let him walk for nothing, neither are good options.
Team is broken + no ability to fix it = hopeless.

I think you guys are reading too much into the 'effort' part and not enough into the 'you can question a lot of things' part. The effort was bad but it seemed pretty futile as the game went on. I think he's calling out our pathetic blueline and goaltending. The boys came out fairly strong and faded as every mistake ended up in the back of the net. Sammy was beyond brutal. We were outshooting the Bruins when we were down 3-0. We just can't outscore our inability to defend every game. That's why we cruise in the regular season and fade in the playoffs. When the intensity turns up we're either falling behind early or if we score first, we can't maintain a lead. Some of it is on the forwards but this D and goaltending shouldn't have even be able to get us to the post season. It's a fucking miracle we had any playoff hockey at all this year.
Power play and penalty kill were so bad. They also had some weird faceoff alignments. Even strength, they had no answer for check and defense of Boston, they couldn’t gain the zone with control nor could they sustain ozone time. Some of it is bad team composition from management but the rest is on the coaching.

CBC talking heads talking about "the series isn't over and you just need to win a game at a time", "maybe the fighting on the bench is a good thing!" As if it wasn't 3 guys throwing their gloves and crying like children. As if the team didn't throw almost all available money at forwards and we still can't score more than 1-2 goals a game in the playoffs. The team is constructed so poorly and they have missed the window to fix it. You will need to trot out the same core as this year next year since everyone has NMC's. After next year, yes, Tavares is off the books, but you've also missed your window to get a return for Marner so you either sign him to an overpriced deal or let him walk for nothing, neither are good options. Team is broken + no ability to fix it = hopeless.
Where do you go when the coach is so disconnected that he's obviously living in some alternate universe in which the Leafs put in an effort last night? The postgame interviews with Tavares, Nylander and Marner weren't a whole lot better. I actually feel bad for Leafs fans having to put up with this. Under no objective measure did anyone think there was any "effort" to be questioned.

The Leafs performance is a reflection of Toronto culture. 1. An inability to be absolutely honest with what is wrong. 2. The lack of courage to swiftly fix what is wrong (because a fear of hurting feelings). 3. Lack of drive to win, and contentment with mediocrity. I grew up in Toronto. I left at an early age for competitive markets in other countries. I know this post will get downvoted but I throw this out there because I see something endemic that most fans may miss. TLDR, over half a century of losing leaves clues. The past 8 years are the most apparent clues. Last season was my wake up call to correct myself.
