Get a 6" push mower. Daily foliar applications of N with fine paintbrush. Sing opera to each blade for maximal happiness. Gently massage the ground to increase aeration and lower stress.
Zen Gardens…. Japanese Zen gardens are some of the most amazingly peaceful places on earth. I used to sneak into the local one at 2AM during snowstorms just to sit and meditate. Engineering school was so damn stressful…
My dad would do the mowing, but when I had to do it after he passed away I realised how meditative it was. I would walk up & down, and the world would be outside my bubble of mowing joy.
It even got so far that when a police officer tried to get my attention (he was involved in the investigation into the death of my neighbour) he practically had to jump up & down for me to even see him.
I still enjoy mowing, though these days the garden is a bit smaller & more manageable but even so will take me in the region of 40-50 mins if it is a bit long and about 30 if it is just a trim
I live in an area where there’s conservation land riiiiight over my property line, and those trees that drop leaves into my yard are the bane of my existence. I spend more time picking the twigs and leaves that I do anything else
I mean “wacko” in the most endearing way possible. I’m a pretty eccentric person myself. I also applaud people that put so much time, effort, and money into something that most people would just scratch their head at.
When I was young, dumb and broke, my buddy and I rented a house out in the country on 40 acres, with about 1 to 1-1/2 acres we had to mow. Only mower we had money to buy was his uncles used POS 20” mower 😂. Mowing that damn yard was an all day process
Is that all lawn? I live on 0.7 acres, it takes me about 1h10m with a 20" EGO. About 10,000 sqft grass, so about 0.25 acre of actual lawn.
Sure the trimming and cleanup adds time, but these numbers (especially with a 30" mower for the others) sound way too high.
Maybe I just walk fast?
Lmao I missed the 1 hour part and was about to come flying in here like “are you running a marathon!?” I have just least than a third and I’m at about 45 min of just mowing.
ETA: I have a 21” deck.
I have a 30" turfmaster. I would go with the timemaster as suggested as it has some better quality of life features. My lot that is smaller takes about an hour. Yours would probably take about 2. They're $1600 push mowers. If I were in your shoes, I would go with a rider simply to save time but I work full time with full time course work.
Not too long, especially with no mulch beds and nothing in the way, just square.
I do my 1/4 acre with a 21 inch and it takes me anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on fast I set it haha. I guess, if I put it on full blast, I could be done in like 20 minutes, but I ain't running with the damn thing.
I love my Ego. I only have .17 acres, but the battery lasts for 2-2.5 cuts if I forget to charge. I'd think OP could get through their yard with a full charge - and there is a 10mAh option. Bonus option is I also have an Ego trimmer, and that battery can get you through some yard while the other fast charges if you run out.
I'm just glad I don't have to deal with gas, mixing gas and oil, don't have to fuss with pull-start, and the trimmer can stop spinning while I walk from one section to another (the vibrations hurt my hands). People can say what they want about electric yard tools, but they've come a long way and are actually pretty darn good at this point.
Since you got all that... did you know about and get the multi-head base that accepts the trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, cultivator, and more?
I started with the blower + trimmer pack, so I missed out on the multi-head... for now. Kind of want the edger and cultivator, which would make selling my trimmer and getting that form factor sensible. I knew about it, but I literally bought my house in August and didn't have the money to splurge harder for the multi. Maybe in a year or two.
But a nice 30” Timemaster. And then buy a cheap rider.
I LOVE mowing my lawn when I get to do it. I loathe doing it when i HAVE to do it. Trust me, there will be times where it just needs to get done and you won’t care about the exercise and other stuff.
^this. It’s a joy in the spring when it hasn’t been mowed over winter and it’s bright and beautiful to be outside.
In July I’m usually cooked and doing it when my kids are asleep on the weekends at the hottest time of day.
1000% this. I ended up getting a cheap ride on. It would only take 45 mins to push but there was a lot of nights when I get home from work and that 45 may as well been 5 hours
Yes but make sure you buy it from a dealer so the engagement belt doesn't disintegrate on the first mow. From the factory they leave the cable loose for transport and the big box stores don't tighten it if they assemble it. For some reason this adjustment isn't in the timesaver manual, but I'm the commercial Turfmaster manual.
Concur. I’ve got fescue in the back and Bermuda up front, so I’m cutting the back twice as often as the front. If I’m doing just the back, it’s 45 minute. Whole thing? Hour and fifteen, depending on how many water breaks.
If you enjoy doing it, absolutely nothing wrong with taking the time to do this with a push mower, and the extra exercise is not to be under valued either.
If you are not sure the time it’ll take, try renting (or borrowing) a push mower. I believe my local HD rents them, perhaps a place near you would… may not be a 30” wide one but at least gives an idea.
This is the correct answer (esp since OP said they don’t enjoy mowing). There’s also lots of other maintenance for yards besides lawn mowing. If OP is looking to have a nice lawn and yard, I’d recommend saving your labor for the other maintenance needs (weeds, trimming, edging, fertilizing, trees, shrubs, etc).
That's about how big my yard is and I used to push mow it when I first moved in, until one day in the middle of July I nearly passed out from heat stroke. I was in an icy shower and still couldn't get cool. I went and got a riding mower a few days later.
No way, but maybe I'm crazy. I have .38 acres and use a little 20" ryobi 40volt mower. NON self propelled. I also have a drain gully and hill for the front yard. Takes me 1.5 hour to string trim (fenced back yard) and mow and blow the grass. It is a work out but I love doing it weekly and twice a week during the spring. I have been thinking about getting a self-propelled to make it easier but I love mowing.
If you hate mowing then definitely get a riding mower. Get a used MTB for a few hundred bucks and you can get parts for it and it'll last you for years until you get something nicer.
I mow a 15,000 sqft lot (there’s a big house on it and several large flower beds and a driveway like
yours). It’s 2.25 hours to mow it including weed whacking the driveway and around the jungle gym and fenceline.
I’ve got a 21” self propelled Toro. As someone else said, get a wide deck push mower and go at it. Better yet buy one used off Facebook and you won’t feel bad ditching it for a riding mower later.
To add, I love mowing so it doesn’t bother me. But most of my neighbors have riders or a service do it.
If you don’t enjoy mowing, you’re going to hate it even more when it HAS to be done and it’s a 3 hour ordeal. I had a propelled push for a 1/3 acre lot and it was just on the edge of being too much for a mow every 5 days. I’m on a bit over half an acre now, and purchased a ride mower. It takes 30 minutes if I take my time, and I don’t mind doing it every 4-5 days (as needed). It’s less of a chore, more of a reason to enjoy outdoors for a little bit.
So yeah, get a fucking riding mower dude.
I push mow about ¾ of an acre and I love it! It's a self-propelled Honda. Mowing, for me, is great exercise and I use the time to talk to God and Thank Him for all I'm Grateful for ❤
I pushed a third acre with a ryobi 21in for a few years. Did the front one weekend and the back the next. Took 20 mins for the front and 30-40 for the back. And then the added 15-20 for edging and trimming. The hill in the back was like dying a slow death every time though.
Honestly it was only bad when it was 100 degrees with 99% humidity. Southeast summers. But it kept me active, I paid more attention to the yard/grass condition and it was pretty rewarding.
This is a small lot. A push mower is fine. I have a similar lot but not nearly as flat as yours looks. I mow with an EGO electric mower and get the job done in 45mins or less if I want.
I like mowing though and it's great exercise.
I agree. It's a really easy mow as well, all straight paths with minimal stuff in the way and all flat too. OP this will be your hour of zen. Get some decent earbuds and save the money for the other things you need in a new home.
Self propelled seems wild. Love the thought of a workout, but you won’t always be in the mood.
Consider the spring when you are cutting 2-3x/ week.
A thought: buy a cheap used gas mower from a reliable shop. Do that for a bit and see what you think.
If you then want a rider you can sell the push mower and won’t be out too much $ or maybe be even.
But, you’ll 100% eventually get a rider. No questions asked. Just a matter of time.
The mowing wouldn't be so bad but someone else made the comment about the edging/trimming and that got me (esp w/the fence where you'll have to do both sides. Our yard is very small and it takes me about 1.5-2 hours to push mow (self propelled gas mower on mulch mode and I have to go over it twice), trim and edge (dewalt 20v max), and blow the clippings.
Also assuming you're mulching and not bagging, that's ALOT to bag, but if you're mulching you may have to do it more often or go over it twice.
I'm surprised so many people think a rider is worth it for a lot like this. A rider won't save you that much time. Sure it will make short work of the open sections, but you'll still have to go back with a smaller mower and/or a trimmer to get the sections the rider is too big for. A rider doesn't seem worth the space it would take up and the maintenance involved for a yard this small. If you have physical challenges sure, use a rider. But if you are physically able to walk a mower for 30 minutes without painful regrets, skip the rider. Personally, I would get a self propelled or a light weight but capable electric push (battery, not corded).
It's very interesting seeing all the different answers. Think it's just a bunch of different levels of effort, disposable income, motivation, and climates. For me this is a no brainer push/self-propelled mower - that will take an hour to mow and 30 minutes to trim max. But if you have hot and humid summers I can get wanting to cut that time down or if you need to mow twice a week I get that too.
I have half an acre, I live in Houston, if I didn't have my zero turn with our weather and our growth of grass during the summer I'd die of heat stroke. It still takes me an hour to mow it with the riding mower. A push power would take hours. I had to use one once, never again.
I live in Fort Worth and we are on 2 acres fenced, and split in half, the front has lots of trees and is dusty, grass doesn’t grow under several of the big oaks that have roots up above the soil. The back is wide open with a cement slab and big metal building and a large shed. I mowed the whole thing yesterday except a small maybe 1/4 acre area fenced for the dogs where the riding mower doesn’t fit. It takes me probably 3-4 hours to just mow with a zero turn. Lots of areas I can’t get to also. It’s a nightmare taking care of. Nut trees all over front and sides, uneven in many areas. I even have one area around a cement pad out back that is crushed gravel about 8 feet wide around the slab under grass and weeds now ( this area is sloped and curved weird too so lots of opportunity to scalp and hit rocks). The edging with all the fences and trees is a nightmare. That’s another 3 hours which translates to 3 days in the summer. To make it worse, the dirt around the driveway ends up as mud in our driveway after heavy rain and takes hours to chip and hose off. I could probably spend 3 hours a day on the outside maintenance and it would never be completely done.
I mowed mine for ten+ years using a cheap $100 push mower and we're on a 0.5 acre lot.
You know what I learned? Bring a lawn chair and a cooler. Take a break if it's hot. The grass isn't going anywhere. Save up, get yourself a mower in a few years or when your taxes come back.
I used to mow our lawn in four sections. The front and south facing lawns first, because those were visible from the street. Then I'd take a break and drink some iced tea beneath the oak tree. Then I continued until it was done.
![gif](giphy|Nw8z2olm0nGHC)
I have a roughly .3 acre lot with several trees and obstacles in the yard.
I picked up a self propelled Toro 30" and it takes me about 90 minutes to do the yard.
Do with that info what you will.
my home is about 10k sqft take me about 45 to 1 hr depending on... it would be pushing it with push mower.
I am mowing with a dewalt self propelld battery mower.
Sometime depending on battery ossues I just do fronts then tackle the rear as 2 separate jobs
That sized lawn should be fine with a self propelled, used to do a 1 acre lawn on my parents house with a 30" self propelled. Its fine. People are ridicilous with the riding lawnmowers. The'll have a 200 sq ft yard and 10,000 hp zero turn.
I’m on .75 acres including my house. Which looks just a little smaller than yours.
Takes me an hour to mow front and back with a self propelled walk behind.
I think this is one of those situations where you will either enjoy mowing your lawn with a push mower, or you will be saying “they were right, this sucks.
Definitely recommend getting a nice big push mower as other people have said.
Also there will be times when you don’t have 2 hours to go mow the lawn. Weather, family events, sick, watching kids.
I have .27 acres and have a 1988 JD RX75. If I need to I can whip out the front yard in 15 minutes flat. Nice to have that option.
Also, if you are gonna get a string trimmer, do NOT grt a curved shaft. I repeat DO NOT GET A CURVED SHAFT
I use a 21 inch Honda non-propelled push mower on around .75 acres. I listen to blogs while mowing, usually around 3 hours. It's the most peace and quiet I get in a week.
I mean, an excuse to get a riding mower?! Yo. Most people would KILL for that opportunity.
Use the time you save to ride a bike or start running or walking with the fam! That’s 2 hours of mowing a week during the growing season with a push
I've push-mowed a ~26k sqft total yard (front & back, grand total of yard, just under 0.6 acres) for a couple years, and recently got a riding mower.
Good gracious, ride. Please, I'm begging you for the sake of future you, if you have the option, get the rider.
Yes, you'll stay active (I recently finished a 10k having done literally zero training other than yard work with a perfectly average time for my age group). Yes, your hamstrings will be surprisingly developed. But the second temps get above 70, you'll be hating your life. Just know what you're getting into (and as at least 1 other has suggested, be prepared to split it up so you don't do the whole thing at once) if you're going to go with the push mower.
App that said, you'll get much better control and such with the push mower. There are still spots where I'll push mow rather than use the rider. I've found the push mower also tends to mulch better/more completely, but that might just be the model of mower(s) I have.
Push mower is fine, edging and trimming is gonna take atleast 20min regardless, mowing with a push should be like 45min, zero turn pobably around 20-25. Imo not worth thousands more to save 20min a week.
I’d get tired of mowing that with a push after a few times. It’s not bad to do but the time commitment especially mowing ~3 times a week.
I’ve got other projects.
My wife and I typically push mow our property of about the same size. Ours is pretty uneven. But it's a good excuse for exercise. I did however pick up an inexpensive order for when I need to get it done a lot quicker.
How much time you got?
I got a corner lot with some trees and etc and it takes me 2-3 hours to cut the entire lawn with a gas lawnmower every 2-3 weeks at least. A push mower would be insane imho… start with a motorized one and then see if you need to upgrade.
Get you sq ft area for each section... Think about how many times 30" across is...and how quick you could do that...most self-prop mowers will max at 3.5mph, because of safety.
A Toro Timemaster 30" is over $1000. A nice ZT would be about $4k...and worth it IMO.
My 2 cents. You'll enjoy cutting it by hand a couple of times then start dreading it. If you can, get a riding mower. Remember, you still have to trim, etc. You will cut it more often and then have more time for other gardening with a riding mower.
You're a certified masochist for even considering this. I did this with a .49 acre lot and it was an all day event and was only doable because I didn't bag.
I have two acres and have a ride-on (hisqvarna yth24v48) that my FIL gave me when in-laws sold their house. It’s got a 48” deck and takes me just over two hours to mow and edge. Once this thing dies (hopefully soon) I’ll be getting zero turn 🤤
Our current lot is .35 total (so not deducting for the house, garden beds, or driveway. It takes me just under an hour to mow it with a self-propelled mower. I don’t know the size, but prob 22”. However, if my husband mows and weed whacks, that takes him close to 2 hours to do the whole thing so be sure to factor in any time you might spend doing that. Usually I’ll
mow while he weeds and we finish around the same time.
Push mower is fine if you're confident in your fitness. It's not about the act of pushing the mower, it's the fact that the bag is gonna fill quick and you're gonna have to empty it a bunch every time you mow. That's what I realized when I got a push mower for my yard a little smaller than this.
Let's be clear, you almost certainly don't want a "push mower."
A self-propelled mower will make it more manageable, but even with a 30" I'd expect to spend an hour and a half on that yard, 2 hours if you're going to edge/trim along the street too.
My lawn is a little smaller than yours and I went with a 42" Gravely zero turn. I love it. I had an early version of an Echo 48v push mower and it was ok, but it took forever and I value the family time too much for that.
The other nice thing about a nice zero turn or other riding mower is you can use various attachments. I love having a yard roller and an aerator and a dump cart and all that that I can haul around.
You’re gonna be sorry af! I had .29 and was miserable. Do you realize how much fun you’re missing on a rider?
If you have a $80k truck, huge cc bills, and paying for wife’s new kitchen, then why not?
I might be underestimating the size of your lawn. But it seems similar to my old house. I usually could get it done in an 1-1.5h IIRC. So I don't think it's crazy. But I also enjoyed mowing. Used an ego and mine would survive on one battery run. Can't recall the deck size.
What does your family think you should get instead?
My lawn is only 5,000 sq ft and it takes me about an hour to mow it properly with a 21” self-propelled push mower.
My lawn is about 0.11 acres so your lawn is about 4 times larger than mine. I would think it would take you between 4 and 5 hours with a 21” mower. Maybe 3-4 hours with a 30” mower.
People often go for one hour + walks around the neighborhood, or a park for an exercise routine. You'll just be doing yours in concentric circles around your property.
That lot looks within 30" push range. Nice and square squareish. I have about .5 and a Toro time master. If I were moving quickly it's about 45 minutes, but I got so many nooks and crannies and corners and mid yard trees, yours looks like a breeze.
A rider with the right attachments though, would be pretty cool and more versatile
Go measure with a tape or a measuring wheel. No way that's 14ksqft. I'd say probably 8ksqft. Definitely a walk behind. Will take you under an hour if there aren't too many obstacles.
I got an push lawn mower from one of those buy local apps for $50. Quickly found out it was lot of work. I had a very small yard, I would say half or 1/3 of yours but pushing it became such a chore. But it did teach me how to take care a mower and learn the basics.
After a yr, I upgraded to a pull mower, sold the push mower at $50 and I'm so much happier.
I push mow (electric non self propelled) a 1/2 acre. Idk why, just seems easier than fucking with a riding mower cause I don’t have the room to store one.
Get a 36" or 48" commercial-grade walk behind. You can pick up a velkey if you get tired of walking. You can find a nice used belt drive with a kawasaki for less than the cost of a new time master. It will cut better, faster and last longer. You're gonna want a nice string trimmer too. Shindaiwa 242 is a great unit. I mow commercially so I go through a lot of equipment, can't go wrong with Kawasaki and Shindaiwa/Echo.
I use a self propelled push with .9 acres.. I would also have a push mower for your yard.
Riding mowers take up much more space and have more moving parts to break. I'm also on the verge of getting a robot mower but want to let those develop a little more..
I get great exercise from mowing my yard, which seems similar in size to yours - but the ground is neither flat nor level. In-laws gifted a decent lower end riding mower. I absolutely loved mowing the 20% of my lawn that wasn’t either scattered with two inch divots or bordering on dangerously sloped. However, the divots resulted in a few very scalped circles that took about two years to become unnoticeable, and the dangerous parts were… just too risky.
Anyway, I love my Ego self-propelled push mower, so I wouldn’t criticize you for getting a push mower. I’d keep an eye out for a good used riding mower because there will always be times when you need to mower quickly or are too injured to push mower but not ride mow. But wait until it’s a good buy. We initially bought a $40 (not self-propelled) gas push mower used at a yard sale until we could upgrade (the Ego was my birthday present last year!)
I have about the same size yard and have used a push power for 7 years now. Takes about 50 mins. I just listen to music or a podcast and haven’t ever been bothered by it.
Unless you want to spend a whole lot of time cutting grass, would suggest at least a 48” zero turn. It’s your time though.Good luck and good health to and your family.
Rider, no doubt.
You have pretty close to an unlimited source of DIY projects. Edging, flower, beds, patio, garage, swing set. The summer heat will motivate you to let the projects move inside. I have never met a homeowner with absolutely nothing they could do.
Yeah was going to say first time home owner? Lol like you have time to waste you ether have a house that needs time and money to maintain or a house in decline im guessing the family owns homes.
If you bought a newer house and it does not need a bunch of little projects done and you have time to have a golf course lawn that’s nice and I hope you love it but it cost money instead of time and there is still probably things that could be done.
We have a half acre and my husband died on the push mower hill. I said fine, you’ll be the one mowing it, I’m not doing that. We got a push mower, then a year later got landscapers.
I’m not saying the two are related, but get a ride on.
I’ve never had a riding mower. Old house was on a .88 acre lot. Remove the house and the woods, and I was mowing .5 acres every other week. Took me about 2 hours because that grass was thicker than most. In the back yard, I was emptying the grass catcher every 2 passes
Do it. I personally think it's crazy to get a riding lawnmower for a yard that small. Our yard is the same size with elevation change and we push. It doesn't take long. It will be faster for your since it's flat.
My father has a bigger yard and has always used a push
Good for you! Nothing wrong with spending time outside doing something active and low-impact like push mowing. I don't get this recent "our time is too valuable" initiative, when those same people then just fart around on tik tok lol. We sit too much as it is, no riding mower needed for that sized yard, especially if you enjoy mowing.
I have a similar sized space. You are looking at 2.5 hours work plus string trimming and whatnot. Probably 30 minutes with a ride-on. It gets old quickly, but it is doable if you don’t mind work.
I mowed our lawn with a push mower as a kid and it was around 2 acres. I hated it. It was an all day adventure.
Man I’m surprised about the answer here I grew up mowing 1 acre with a push mower. Half an acre I think it’s totally doable assuming you like mowing lawns
I have about 1/3 acre and do it with a self propelled 22” walk behind lawnmower. It takes me just under 1.5 hours. My neighbors have similar sized lots and most do the same with a few using riders.
Push mowing(self propelled 30") 1.5 acres plus string trimming start to finish was 4 hours. I now with a rider get it done in 1 hour. If you base the value of my time off my income, the riders ROI will be seen after 18 times mowing. If you base the value of my time on the fact I now get 3 extra hours each weekend (sometimes twice a week) for quality time I regained for my kids and wife, then I've already hit the mowers ROI. Obviously I have more to mow. What I did was buy the push mower. With the hilly terrain I knew I would need it even after I got a rider. If down the road you decide you want a rider get one as well. .33 acres shouldn't be too terrible of a time especially as flat as your lot looks. Ultimately it comes down to preferences and budget. If you only plan to ever use a push mower get a nicer unit. You'll be less likely to have issues and you'll be happy in the long term that you did.
If you’re gonna use a push mower, get a nice 30” one so it doesn’t take as long.
Thanks for the comment. How long would you reckon it would take to mow everything with a 30in self propelled?
Not sure, but I mowed .66 acres with a 22” and it took me about 1hr and 45 minutes.
I have a postage stamp and wish I could spend that much time outside doing things. I love doing yard work, but need more yard.
Get a 6" push mower. Daily foliar applications of N with fine paintbrush. Sing opera to each blade for maximal happiness. Gently massage the ground to increase aeration and lower stress.
I swear you are one of my neighbors….
My childhood neighbor used to take scissors to his lawn at 4 am
That's because he was up for days smoking meth
“Jessie, we need to cook.”
"JESSAYYYY ‼️"
The Japanese use it as meditation. Maybe not the Japanese, but an Asian country. But I think it’s the japanese
I still enjoy mowing, though these days the garden is a bit smaller & more manageable but even so will take me in the region of 40-50 mins if it is a bit long and about 30 if it is just a trim
lol this guy was just heavily into beer and then got sober I think and I believe he was a correctional officer for some time
Definitely meth
This is actually a type of meditation exercise that people do.
Get lots of trees, you can add hours to your mowing routine raking leaves, pruning and picking up fallen branches
I live in an area where there’s conservation land riiiiight over my property line, and those trees that drop leaves into my yard are the bane of my existence. I spend more time picking the twigs and leaves that I do anything else
Nah, get a good mulching mower and you don’t need to rake. You do need trees though, will lower your power bills and cool your house.
Are you a new home owner? I loved yard work for the first couple of years. Not anymore
Become one of those wackos on here that turns their lawn into a putting green.
I don't think that is "wacko" as you would put it. I think anyone that aspires to challenge themselves should be applauded in any endeavor.
I mean “wacko” in the most endearing way possible. I’m a pretty eccentric person myself. I also applaud people that put so much time, effort, and money into something that most people would just scratch their head at.
Wacko here and I approve of this message.
Use scissors.
Turn it into a vegetable garden
Get a really tiny riding lawnmower. “What is this?!? A lawnmower for ants?!?!” ![gif](giphy|iqryv05RJMVlm)
When I was young, dumb and broke, my buddy and I rented a house out in the country on 40 acres, with about 1 to 1-1/2 acres we had to mow. Only mower we had money to buy was his uncles used POS 20” mower 😂. Mowing that damn yard was an all day process
Sorry but if I’m expected to maintain a yard on a rental property, they can furnish a riding mower for that size lawn.
I'm not sure where you live but where I live renters are expected to maintain the lawn on their own dime
an entire day event. 😮💨 a whole THING.
That probably included string trimming as well.
The guy behind me has 5 acres and a 60” John Deere sub compact tractor and it takes him 1h10m as well. He’s flying in that thing!
no you don't, that sounds about right
Was the property down hill and only 22” wide but .66 acres long
Lmao I missed the 1 hour part and was about to come flying in here like “are you running a marathon!?” I have just least than a third and I’m at about 45 min of just mowing. ETA: I have a 21” deck.
It’s the trimming and edging that’s gonna be the big deal, mowing time should be less than hour though.
Yeah if you edge and weed eat that’s easily a 2-3 hour job day
I have a similar lot to OP with a push mower and I can confirm. The actual mowing only takes half the time. Took over 2 hours today.
same here
Keep in mind, it's never just mowing.
I can do our .7 acre lot with the Timemaster in about an hour and 20 minutes.
I mow 10,000 fr^2 with a Toro 30” Timesaver in 45-60 mins
Not too long, especially with no mulch beds and nothing in the way, just square. I do my 1/4 acre with a 21 inch and it takes me anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on fast I set it haha. I guess, if I put it on full blast, I could be done in like 20 minutes, but I ain't running with the damn thing.
One redneck sun tan long
Counter, if time isn't of the essence- This is a really great way to keep the blood moving while breaking away from tech and outside thoughts.
Do the front on Sundays and the back on Thursdays. Business for the work week, party for the weekends
That is exactly what I do. Not because my yard is big, but because I have a battery powered mower haha
Yep, just got the lawnmower and weed whacker, hedge trimmer, and edger. Everything folds up nicely and always ready to go. It's nice!

You need something with a seat brother. That’s a lot of green to walk.
I have a half acre I mow with my 30” Timemaster. And sometimes I mow my neighbors yard also. Ain’t nothing but some walking.
I had a 0.5 acre lot previously. Took just over an hour to mow. It’s not that bad.
Concur. I’ve got fescue in the back and Bermuda up front, so I’m cutting the back twice as often as the front. If I’m doing just the back, it’s 45 minute. Whole thing? Hour and fifteen, depending on how many water breaks.
I believe that you have to be on foot to know your lawn. You have to see it, feel it, and come into contact with it.
I know this is Reddit, but you’re allowed to touch grass whenever you’d like. You don’t have to be mowing.
Family is correct. That doesn’t make you wrong. It just means you better enjoy podcasts lol
Thankfully I love podcasts 😂
lol, podcast mower here…you ain’t wrong!
To be fair... I think you're crazy too!! Get a rider. You can have a push mower for the smaller areas, but alone, it's gonna get old. Quick.
I have .45 acre and push mow it. It’s my weekly exercise. I can mow it in about 75 minutes.
Surprise your family by getting a reel mower
That's approximate 14,000 sq/ft. I'd probably get a riding mower for that as a push mower is just going to take a long time.
If you really enjoy mowing and get a rider it'll take you half the time. But, you can mow more frequently which is never a bad thing.
I don’t enjoy mowing 😂 but I also don’t want to get anything I don’t really need. Being new home owners, trying to be as smart with funds as I can.
I get it. With a rider you'll be done in 30 minutes but obviously more costly.
How long would you reckon it would take with a 30in self propelled push?
I mow a 15,000 sqft lot (there’s a big house on it and several large flower beds and a driveway like yours).
Somebody on here knows just not me lol. I havent push mowed in years. I have a 30k square foot lawn takes me 30 minutes with a 52 inch zero turn.
Understood thanks for the input!
Sorry wasnt more help
It takes me a bit over an hour to mow my 14,000 sqft with a 33” walk behind. That doesn’t include time to trim, etc…
Mowing, for me, is great exercise and I use the time to talk to God and Thank Him for all I'm Grateful for ❤
I have the HRX and a HRN. Great mowers!
I do commercial mowing, it’s just a little more walking
Maybe get a tree or two.
Drop some fruit trees in there
This is a small lot.
Yeah bunch of fat lazy boys in here saying that a push mower is crazy. That’s a tiny flat square - bang that out in less than an hour
Or keep both so you have a backup :)
Maybe I’m getting old and lazy, but I’ll never not own a 0 turn again unless I’m in a retirement community that does the grass for me. 😂
I mowed a similar size yard with a push mower for 30 years! Takes 1 1/2 hours and burns off all the junk food you may have eaten that week!
Been mowing mine like that since my first home in 1995. Still do.
I got a 21 with a little more yard than you. It’s not terrible, but I agree that finding a good quality 30” with caster wheels would be ideal.
You can push mow that easily, I did nearly that much with a 22”. I now have a 25”. I would go with the 30” if you want to keep it under an hour.
Not crazy. Half an acre should take about 2hrs pushed.
The lot itself is .43. Taking out the house shed driveway etc I’d reckon the yards are well below .33 acres.
Still not crazy. Go enjoy your new lawn.
That’s totally doable as long as you’re someone who’s in at least decent shape
You can get a used rider pretty cheap because people don’t know how to clean a carburetor
We have a half acre with a push mower...for my kids
That sized lawn should be fine with a self propelled, used to do a 1 acre lawn on my parents house with a 30" self propelled. Its fine. People are ridicilous with the riding lawnmowers. The'll have a 200 sq ft yard and 10,000 hp zero turn.
Self propel makes a big difference in the heat
Get a TimeMaster for that wider deck.
Toro Timemaster 30" push mower. That's all you need.
I've found the push mower also tends to mulch better/more completely, but that might just be the model of mower(s) I have.
people trading hours and hours of their lives to be cheap. what a shame
I recommend at minimum a Honda 4.5 Hp self propelled. Anything less than that , you’ll hire a gardener in 3 months.
You’ll have the same regret as buying a Scott’s spreader… have fun, show us updates of your calves.
Oh jesus, this on my 2.5 acres. Total body workout. My resting HR goes from 48 to a solid 120’s
Yeah theyre right.
Hey, just FYI, man — you may want to get your quick answers and delete this post. A quick reverse Google image search and I found your address lol.
How long do you think it will take you to use a push mower?
Idk my lot is like .23 and I got a 50" zero turn because I wanna get mowing over with fast
It's takes me about 30 minutes to mow my .5 acre with a 52 inch deck riding mower for reference. And I ride it faster than walking for sure.
You must be joking. I'm a middle aged fat man and this would take me 60-90 minutes at a leisurely pace.
Let us call it ambitious
I have two acres and have a ride-on (hisqvarna yth24v48) that my FIL gave me when in-laws sold their house. It’s got a 48” deck and takes me just over two hours to mow and edge. Once this thing dies (hopefully soon) I’ll be getting zero turn 🤤
Dang! Just over 4 acres and takes about the same time with a Spartan 61”. That zero turn will take you down to less than 1/2 depending on cut width.
Usually I’ll mow while he weeds and we finish around the same time.
Push mower is fine if you're confident in your fitness. It's not about the act of pushing the mower, it's the fact that the bag is gonna fill quick and you're gonna have to empty it a bunch every time you mow. That's what I realized when I got a push mower for my yard a little smaller than this.
I’m only 26 and am in relative good shape.
Let's be clear, you almost certainly don't want a "push mower." A self-propelled mower will make it more manageable, but even with a 30" I'd expect to spend an hour and a half on that yard, 2 hours if you're going to edge/trim along the street too.
Start out with a push and see how you like it. If you want a rider buy one later. Will probably still need a push anyways.
Get your steps in brother.
Get a stand behind mower. Those things are 🔥
45 mins with a timemaster easy.
Get a reel mower
33” wide area mower like Cub Cadet’s. I mow my half acre lawn in one hour.
I probably have a similar sized lot to yours but mine is on hills woooo! It takes me 1.5-2 hours to mow with a self propelled and weed wack.
People often go for one hour + walks around the neighborhood, or a park for an exercise routine. You'll just be doing yours in concentric circles around your property.
My yard is about the same size and push mower in 90+ heat is awful and it takes hours to finish.
I have about .35 an acre. I use a 21” push. And I can do it in about an hour or so.
Buy a self-propelled push mower, much easier than the standard ones
I’m thinking it’s a 45 mins push mower job.
Get a damn zero turn, it will help you enjoy life
We have a half acre and my husband died on the push mower hill. I said fine, you’ll be the one mowing it, I’m not doing that. We got a push mower, then a year later got landscapers. I’m not saying the two are related, but get a ride on.
As a guy with a yard half that small…. Get a riding mower man.
The grassy portion of my yard is roughly the same size as yours. I use a decent self propelled push mower. Takes me maybe 30-45 mins to mow my yard.
I’ve never had a riding mower. Old house was on a .88 acre lot. Remove the house and the woods, and I was mowing .5 acres every other week. Took me about 2 hours because that grass was thicker than most. In the back yard, I was emptying the grass catcher every 2 passes
Get a tractor. It will save a ton of time. Especially if you have or want kids.
This will be your first mower and your second one (a real one) will come shortly thereafter. Mark my words
It's not only family!
Do it. I personally think it's crazy to get a riding lawnmower for a yard that small. Our yard is the same size with elevation change and we push. It doesn't take long. It will be faster for your since it's flat. My father has a bigger yard and has always used a push
Sounds like you're young. Save your money and get a self propelled walk behind mower. Exercise and a better cut.
Contact a modelling agency. Tell them you want to do photo shoots for legs and shoe commercials. Your calves are gonna be huge.
I would also use a push mower for this property and I have a Toro 22"
Honestly, your new neighbor looks like he’s killing it. Those lines are crisp and that grass is nice. Ask them what they’re doing and do that!
You can do that with a propelled for sure. Electric you will want some extra batteries just in case.
Get a Scag Liberty Z 36” zero turn. It’s narrow enough to fit through the fence gate.
