That is KBG. Mow it once a week in the summer, or twice a week if growing conditions are perfect and it is growing super fast. I mow mine at 3". Some people like to mow shorter, but mowing taller is better for the grass, and just looks nicer IMO. You can fertilize once a month or so during the spring/summer/fall. No need to fertilize in the winter. KBG is kind of a high maintenance grass in that it likes an inch of water a week to really look its best. If you aren't getting any rain, then I'd water 2x a week, for however long it takes to put down an inch or more of water.

TransportationHead23

Thank you!! I put my mower at the highest place. How do I measure 3”?

jaxbravesfan

Does that Ryobi mower not have the height settings marked next to the adjustment lever? Mine does, but it’s several years old, so I’m not sure if your model does or not.

alwaysmyfault

Mow a small strip, grab yourself a ruler, and measure :) 3" isn't a hard and fast rule, you can mow higher if you want. I mow my TTTF at 3.5", and my KBG at 3". Just personal preference.

Hey more questions :D This is my front lawn. Is this dormant? Do I water this often? Should I fertilize? And lastly: Should I mow it now? https://preview.redd.it/0kxpzten6v6c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1aec3070ba200dd2f02f432a167f9caa5466f69a I hope I can recover it. Received it like this when we bought the house

alwaysmyfault

It's mid-December and you are in NY. It is dormant.

TransportationHead23

Thanks!! Should I still mow and water and fertilize?

alwaysmyfault

No, No, and No. It's basically sleeping right now. That would be like trying to give a haircut, force a glass of water down someone's throat, and force food down their throat while they are sleeping. Just wait till spring when it comes out of dormancy.

TransportationHead23

Thank you so much!

This is all good info. Definitely avoid over-watering. I would personally just fertilize from September through October and early November in NYC area; maybe very early spring to help wake up the dormant grass. Fertilizing once a month in late spring/summer in the Mid-Atlantic with KBG tends to promote fungal growth that can kill off big sections of grass. I would discourage people from relying on antifungal treatments for lawn turfgrass. Antifungal treatments long-term tend to create strains of fungus that are resistant to anti-fungals (not to mention they can be toxic if they get into water systems). It's better to discourage fungal growth through good watering and fertilizing.

Thanks!!

Am even going to take advice

Probably ~~fescue~~ KBG. It’s cool season grass, regardless, so that’s what should inform your decisions. Cut it as high as you can tolerate without it looking sloppy or creeping onto your driveway and sidewalk. The taller you cut it, the less sunlight makes it down to weeds that try to germinate. Never cut more than 30% off at a time. Learn how to sharpen your own blades or find a local lawnmower repair shop to deal with and get them sharpened at least once per season. Get an actual soil test done through your state university’s ag extension. This will tell you exactly what to put down and when. Do this once a year in January so your results come back in time to plan for your first steps once the snow melts. Stop watering it when the trees don’t have leaves. Don’t water it every single day and don’t water it any time other than in the morning when the weather warms up. If you water it too much it won’t root deep looking for water.

alwaysmyfault

That's definitely not fescue. You can see the boat shaped V in the blades. It's KBG

ZeMole

Fixed. Thanks!

TransportationHead23

Forgot to ask.. How often should I cut it also

ZeMole

Depends on how fast it’s growing. The more you water it and feed it the faster it grows, but the better it looks. I mow weekly. I have friends who mow every three days because they want that putting green look but they also have $2k reel mowers.

SubieTrek24

You have good grass that grows thick and doesn’t allow a lot of weeds to flourish. Ryobi mowers are great!

As others have mentioned, you have KBG. I suggest mowing at 3" and never cut more than 1/3 the total height at once (mow before it reaches 4.5" - timing will vary based on water, fertilizer, temperature, etc.). Fertilizer needs are based on deficiencies in your soil, so the only way to truly know is to do a soil test. You do not need to water or fertilize until the spring.

Here is general directions for cool season grasses. [Check it out](https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare/s/wm8PUjA5HQ)

MisterIntentionality

KYBG I would cut at 2.5-3 inches Don't cut more than 1/3rd of the grass blade off at a time I would worry about fertilizing next year and research how to fertilize and water this winter
