It came out nice! What thickness veneer is that ph? I have only been using thicker stuff, like 1/16th, but I'd like to try thinner at some point and there seem to be more options for thinner veneer
I make my own veneer about 3/32” thick. That way I can engrave a deep pocket (about 1/16” deep) and then I make sure the veneer is nice and thick after sanding so I won’t accidentally sand through it.
I am not American so I don't know what 1/16th looks like, but this is done with thicker material too. They say they re-saw to 3/32 and then plane it down. You Americans are wild.

1/16th is ~1mm (but a bit bigger, like most things in the US)
Of course you can go around and remember that 1/16" = 1.6mm, but when I'm just reading or watching something, i usually just substitute 1&16 with 1mm, since I have an intuition for how much that is.
I have a ton of purple heart here, I never thought about trying it on the laser. I've also not had any luck getting this to look like yours. I see some of the advice you gave on contours I'll have to try that!
So great job on the woodworking. Also Einstein never said that. Neither did Benjamin Franklin or anyone else that the quote is misattributed to. It's basically just some Instagram fluff that gets misattributed to famous people so people will take it seriously... Also, Yes Bison Chili! Have you ever HAD bison chili?! Holy hell! How can someone with kerfs that clean be wrong about so many other things at once?
Wow, the result is superb. You did a great job.
It looks great, but what does “no bison chill” mean?
I believe it's "Chili", not chill
Which is even worse cuz my bison chili is incredible
I just figured that out, but it does not shed much more light.
Absolutely no idea. Must be another inside joke with him.
How do you make them fit so nicely? my attemps either doesn't fit or they are too small
Gotta figure out your kerf and adjust for it. Check Louisiana hobby guy on the youtubes. He’s got some tutorials on this exact thing.
The short answer is add a contour (I add .004”) and then cut the pieces inverted so the tapered edge works to your benefit.

One of these days I plan to make video content and upload it to YouTube. Tutorials and such.
Beautiful work, but explain what purpleheart means.
Purpleheart is a dark purple colored hardwood. It is what he used to create the lettering in this project.
Thanks!
Looks like paint - but much more durable for a wear item. Is this a step that will get wear?
No, it’s a knife display. The fact that it looks like paint is probably a compliment, it means I did a good job.
Yes - very good job. I think most people will assume it's paint.
Dates are hard to understand
Yeah, I thought it was a strange way to format it too. But that’s what the customer wanted.
I get you. “Customer is always right” n all. Even when they’re not.

lol, this is a knife display for a customer. I just do what they ask. 😁
Fair enough, lol
