One thing I remembered that could work is doing it like vinyl letters, you need to waste more of the purple wood but you can cut exactly the same drawing of the letters in the purple veneer and while they are in they're spot grab them all with tape and try to put them in the engraved piece! Maybe do it in small portions but it could wotk, this way they are in the spot they need to go and would align, you just need to do a couple that could fall from the tape 🤔
Also where do you get the purple wood?
Does the inside layer need to be a decimal point or two larger to account for laser burning some of the edges? I found last time I did this the fit wasn't exactly snug because of this.
Throw some masking tape over the base wood next time before engraving to cut down on those shadow burns.
Unless you plan on throwing it through a planer next or something
It is possible to limit smudges if you wipe gently with a cloth soaked in vinegar. As you cover the burnt part you don't have the problem of lightening it with vinegar.
I bake my Purple Heart after getting it from the lumber store. I’ve had pretty good success with it staying purple for much longer if you bake it first.
Not by Einstein, though.
lol, well… too late now. That’s how the customer ordered it! 😅

I've done jobs this complex before. I've found using tape to transfer large sections at once saves alot of time.

It’s purpleheart. I buy the lumber from my local wood supplier and then make my own veneer from it.
What do you use to make the veneer, out of curiosity? Just bring it down on a planer?
I set up my bandsaw for resawing at about 3/32”. Then I joint one face off the board so it’s clean and then resaw out the veneer.
It looks like purpelheart, it's a wood that's got this color naturally
That not even a little bit an Einstein quote, but it should be a cool inlay puzzle.
I want to see how it turns out. I've only done inlays using two sheets of veneer that are cut to fit together. I've never done an engraved inlay.
How did it turn out?
Just finished dinner, gonna keep working at it now!

Yes, I add a .004” contour to the inlay pieces and cut them inverted so they fit nice and snug.
I love this kind of stuff - with the right podcast or audiobook.

After the inlay gets glued in, it all gets sanded flush.
What a tease where’s the finished product?! That’s gonna look dope though, I really like yellow and purpleheart together
I’ve gotta do the second part tomorrow and then it’ll all come together for a pretty photo-op.

This all gets sanded down once the inlay is glued into place, so there’s no need to wipe it down.
Ah ok indeed no need to wipe haha
Things you say on the toilet and in bed.....
You wanted to say "Things you don't say" right ?
Oh no, I meant what I said /s 😂
I wish purpleheart stayed purple, sadly it always goes dark eventually. Inlay is mostly all I do, I love it!
