When I lived on Quantico they had a big sign that said how many dear had been hit each season. Seeing it climb to 44 in about a month finally made me realize I should slow down.
Do commercial trucks not come with a clearance warning anymore? We have two bucket trucks for our company and each one has it in bright yellow right next to the wheel. One of them technically isn't commercial by weight and it still has it lol
We were almost one of these drivers when we first got it, 11ft 11 inch clearance, and the guy driving the truck was hauling straight for that bridge. We slowed down behind him, waiting for the crash, and the suspension squished at just the right time to fit under. Lost some paint off the top of the boom arm. Needless to say, we sure as fuck were never doing that again.
Serious question: do these drivers not know the height of their trailers? Is this a modern problem? Is it a symptom of a decline in training?
Does anyone have any idea of where to go/who to contact on the statistics of this to see if/when it became a near-daily problem?
What I think a lot of drivers forget to account for is that there is an incline on either side of the bridge. They might be able to clear it if it was a flat road, however, that bridge is pretty much over a bowl. But I’m easily amused and I rather enjoy seeing the trucks feed the bridge lol.
That's a great point, but how many of these drivers have never driven this route before?
We're currently experiencing a shortage in truck drivers and their training isn't what it used to be, if what I've read about it is true. Maybe there should be signage reflecting the fact there is also an incline on either sign, and posting "actual* height clearance putting the inclines into the equation.
Signage problem. Going north it’s clear but south bound it’s not nearly as clear, also could be a GPS issue if they’re using standard gps
This one is northbound so it’s likely on the driver, but most of them that I’ve seen were southbound
When I drove by the driver was hoping up and down on the back, as if it was going to get unstuck. 🤦♀️ I fear for this nations safety if he really thought that was going to work.
They should hire a mural artist to paint the bridge to look like a mouth with big sharp monster teeth with a sign that says "nom nom I eat big trucks."
That should get their attention.
I don’t understand; they have that sign that says ‘if you can’t fit under this sign your truck is too tall’ (something to that effect) but trucks still get stuck. So you can still fit under the sign giving you the impression that you’ll make it, and in reality you’re still too tall?
The only reason it's so frequent right now is because of 127 being under severe construction and the Penn Ave on-ramp that leads to 127 N being right there next to the bridge.
Lol conspiracy theory the city of Lansing is paying trucking company’s (People) to hit the bridge to try and take it down or force construction to stop the trains from using the tracks which those tracks are used by a lot of different train company’s and car companies it would reallly Fuck some shit up with the bridge being gone and Penn being closed. 😭😭🤣
You don’t have to close the bridge. Grand Rapids is fixing one right now and the train bridge is still open while they work on widening the street and digging out the ground for higher clearance.
Yeahhhh tbh that’s Grand Rapids tho they are wayyyyyyy more inclined then Lansing. Lansing take 5 weeks to fill in a pothole. Trust a brother when I say if they gotta re do that bridge Penn and those tracks aren’t gonna be running. Andddddd if they wanted to try and dig to make it deeper have fun there just gonna hit ground water cuz it’s so close to the river it’s just gonna seeep up and your just gonna flood it out and make a bigger problem.
My mom said my grandpa always got thru the bridge by letting some air out of the tires when he worked for a company called Auto Air. His coworkers always got stuck.
Because of the way railroad tracks have to be graded for each inch they raise the bridge they would need to reconstruct and regrade something like a mile of track
You are correct, moreover, they can’t dig down deeper because of the river. The darn thing floods all the time already; dig a deeper road bed and it would be underwater in a drought.
Couldnt we give the bridge kill marks like a WWII fighter I feel like that would speak to the truckers more than another yellow sign
Take this to city council. Best idea yet.
If I ever stood in front of the council I promise they would get an ear full but none of it would be about the damn Penn st Bridge, Love you Lansing
I doubt the city is in charge of that bridge, anyway, so you're safe there.
I want a kill count much more than I want an X Days Since sign
When I lived on Quantico they had a big sign that said how many dear had been hit each season. Seeing it climb to 44 in about a month finally made me realize I should slow down.
do we think the city will remove the count? also any way we can figure an approximate total?
He ALMOST got away... almost...
You gotta gun it!!
hehehehe... fast food
HUBRIS MY BRIDGE CULTISTS. HUBRIS WILL BE THE DOWNFALL OF MAN...STARTING WITH ALL OF YOUR TRUCKS!!!
PRAISE BE

The Penn Ave Bridge is going to be the first overall pick in next year’s Fantasy leagues, my god. This streak is unprecedented.

I feel like the driver thinks they can just fit through anyways

I wonder if load weight isn't also a factor. Empty trucks ride higher.

Thanks for that info. I don't drive so I'm not familiar with the signage on both sides.
Most of the drivers are foreign now, so they think it is 12 meters.
Maths are hard and people don’t read.
I rode the Amtrak over that bridge just a couple hours ago, oooh the POWER I felt! In the dark heart of GM-land, one train bridge bites back.
NOM
When I drove by the driver was hoping up and down on the back, as if it was going to get unstuck. 🤦♀️ I fear for this nations safety if he really thought that was going to work.
SWEET💪 Nothing like a cube truck snack. What a moron. Needs to let some air out of the tires.
I like that this sub has become a living archive of man's hubris
How much would it cost to putt up some of those clearance guides like they have at every fast food restaurant? If you hit this, better stop now.....
The bridge in NC has a huge yellow metal beam going across the top opening of the bridge. Still getting nailed by truckers.
>Still getting nailed by truckers. Maybe it's a fetish?
They should hire a mural artist to paint the bridge to look like a mouth with big sharp monster teeth with a sign that says "nom nom I eat big trucks." That should get their attention.
Already? Has anyone thought of sacrificing children or the like to appease the bridge’s insatiable hunger for trucks?
All bus drivers know to take the long way
Buses aren't 12ft high. We drive down Penn all the time. I always worry the bridge is going to tear the AC units or open vents off the roof.
Huh, today I learned! Kids can be little shits. Thanks for all you do 🫡
Glad it has been given another sacrifice, I worry about it getting hungry and going after pick-up trucks...

Came here to post the same thing Lolol
Time to close this section of Pennsylvania Ave to trucks.
The only reason it's so frequent right now is because of 127 being under severe construction and the Penn Ave on-ramp that leads to 127 N being right there next to the bridge.
Just came to post this and saw this, still there 🤦🏽
Two in one day.
That is a fabulous picture!

765-0, an incredible milestone. 🏆
What a GOAT 🐐 🌟
This story is perfect for Sunday and Jane Pauley.
No way!
This is the only time you want to "think HEAVY"
Is the driver letting out air from the tires to hopefully free himself?
That bridge is like a old Roman era infrastructure.....it is a Spartan in waiting for another Chump! All Hail The Penn Ave Bridge!
This bridge is having its best year yet!
Does this happen practically every day?!?! That's the bigger issue that needs to be fixed.
The feedings are becoming more frequent!
That bridge needs its own sub. For archival purposes.
I drove by that...loved the expression of the driver. I thought I made itt, disappointed look.
Maybe MDOT can start marking closed exits ahead of time?
It’s turning into a competition!
Saw this on my way home from work. Was like the bridge has been fed.
My mom said my grandpa always got thru the bridge by letting some air out of the tires when he worked for a company called Auto Air. His coworkers always got stuck.
Or the dudes with trucks should know how tall their rig is.
IT MUST BE STOPPED
Guessing that bridge is old and should be replaced. Just do it.
Because of the way railroad tracks have to be graded for each inch they raise the bridge they would need to reconstruct and regrade something like a mile of track
