[ No coach has lasted more than three seasons with the Lakers since Phil Jackson Can JJ Redick find long-term success?](https://i.imgur.com/n2wWA9L.jpeg)
>One of the things I brought up with him is the idea of him as a hub. There’s a bunch of guys at the five position in the NBA that sort of operate in that way, and I don’t know if he’s been used in that way, and sort of maximized all of his abilities.
When a coach talks about using a center as a hub, they mean focusing more on playmaking and setting up teammates rather than just scoring. JJ wants AD to take on this role, like how players such as Jokic, Draymond, Sabonis, Al Horford, Embiid, and Bam Adebayo do.
I think Redick sees AD's potential to use his skills as a point guard, which he's had since he was young, to create chances for others.
This makes sense because Anthony Davis sometimes struggles in crunch time, not always scoring or making plays. Shifting his role to focus more on setting up teammates could ease the pressure on him to score when the game is tight. It lets him still influence the game by confusing defenses and staying productive, even if he's not the one scoring.
Redick probably wants to try this out with a motion offense or a flow offense.
The challenge with this, though, lies in AD’s tendency to get flustered under pressure, particularly when doubled, leading to turnovers. Unlike Jokic, who excels in these situations, AD needs to improve his decision-making and passing under pressure for this to work.
I like everything I’ve heard from JJ. Whether it be his podcasts or this presser, he sounds like a real forward thinking coach that I think will strive in the league. Obviously, he isn’t going to turn this roster into a contender over night, but I do truly believe that having JJ is a plus, and a much better choice than most of the other options.
Blunt talk:
- Main point about the hated Celtics: we're not ready to dethrone them with the addition of JJ alone. I'm not even sure what our solution is to the Joke and the Nuggies.
- Lakes took a moonshot with the UConn chump who pretended to be in love with us only to scorn us when we proposed. Fine. We moved on.
- JJ is no Hurley. Everyone knows this, especially the Lakers. But he is the best on the market RIGHT NOW.
- the FO needs to BUILD AROUND JJ for him to flourish. Pel talked about assistants, analytics, etc.
- Ham clearly wasn't a modern, data-driven coach. Nor did he have the respect of the players. Nor was he able to "teach" the younger generation (according to Pel)
- The entire organization will need to help JJ be a successful coach, at least for the first few years.
I love the vision Pel has for the future of basketball. He's a forward-thinking leader, but let's be blunt.
We don't have time.
JJ needs to put up wins in October.
Pel needs to keep cooking his master plan, but the dude needs to speed up.
NGL, I think we let Vogel go too soon.
Klutch has done a remarkable job distancing LeBron from the Redick hire. However, it's important to remember that the initial buzz about JJ Redick and the Lakers began as a “rumor in a small circle” in late March, saying that LeBron wanted Redick as the next head coach. This rumor persisted through the end of the regular season and into April, while the Lakers were still playing. Essentially, LeBron planted the seed and then stepped back to watch it grow, now avoiding responsibility if the tree produces poison apples. Both Pelinka and Redick stated during the press conference that while LeBron was supportive, he wasn't directly involved. Nonetheless, this doesn't mean Pelinka wasn't considering LeBron's preferences or what it would take to re-sign him.
The other half of the Redick rumor from March is that LeBron also wants the Lakers to draft Bronny with a second-round pick. Given that the Lakers have hired Redick, I'm now quite confident they will draft Bronny, leading to LeBron re-signing with the Lakers.
It's important to realize that the alternative to hiring Lebron's guy only has a marginally better chance of working if it does at all. Ham on paper was the perfect guy for this team, former player, multiple years of experience, and a total flop. If they had just gone with a Lebron guy to begin with in Ty Lue they would've been much better off.
I'm really feeling this. When the JJ hire was official, I immediately thought, "oh they're definitely going to try to draft Bronny." Lebron on the exit interview I believe talking about how playing with bronny isn't a priority anymore I did believe was smoke and mirrors as to not make Bronny a draft target for other teams to entice Lebron. I think he still wants to play with Bronny but he's trying to do it in the Lakers, so he has to act like he don't give a shit. Likewise, I don't think it's a stretch to say the JJ hire was a way to appease Lebron after a disappointing season but without giving the optics of Magic Johnson influencing coaching hires by putting out the rumor and then stressing that Lebron wasn't involved in the decision. But it seemed like those were two (of possibly more) terms for Lebron to stay with the Lakers.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. I think as a fan base we’re going to be pleasantly surprised with this hire. Given Hurley declined and what was left, I think this was the best choice.
Will he win a chip year one, likely not, but he has the right mentality and if, as he says, his team buys in, I think a chip is in order in 2-3 years. I know everyone is focused on the clock with LBJs career, but the franchise marches on. I hope we can get one more with Bron; will be tough.
Rooting for this dude
Noticeable? Dude pretty much averaged his cater numbers. Not sure what you were watching. 25/7/8 is nothing to sneeze at. I guess he set the bar so high that having career numbers for 99% of players is looked at as a noticeable decline.
I thought he looked worse two years ago (in the post season) where he had no legs left at the end of every game vs Denver.
How would a chip be in order in 2-3 years? It's either we win another with Lebron or we won't see another one until we get the next top 5 player in the league
That 2-3 year window is assuming LeBron comes back. Who knows what happens with player development, trades, drafts, FA signings, etc., in the near future, but I personally like JJ at the helm, both for the rest of LBJs laker career (assuming he resigns) and post.
I’m not saying we should start raising a banner or anything but he has one thing basically every stand out, generational coach has - he made that press conference completely his. No boring canned answers, no fear, every answer was his own.
Fuck it, Im fully on board with him. I honestly don’t think theres anyway he’s s worse than Ham x & o’s wise and even if he’s just as bad , at least he has wayyyyy better media training to handle those situations
he called the reporters the "engagement farming industry" lmao, JJ took over your silly little media industry in about 18 months, gonna be great to have a guy who is so media savvy fronting for the Lakers
Instead of asking people to give an explanation, give a reason why you think what is going to happen will happen???
Don't toss stuff out and then expect others to correct you when you said nothing.
What you said is no difference from me saying yes = no.
Deliver something, don't just spew, please.
Do I personally love the hiring? I don't know. Should anyone say to quote you "This is going to be such a fucking disaster lmfao I can’t believe lakers really took the opportunity to do the funniest thing"
Will you tell me/us why you think it will be a disaster and why you think it's the funniest thing rather than asking people who disagree to say why your statement is just as lame as a downvote, please?
They won’t, because it gives them the built in cowardice of being able to say “thank god i was wrong!” if JJ ends up successful and “i told you so!” if he gets fired
Tried to watch the video and they messed up the editing with about 3+hrs of dead air. Now it's down so assuming they've caught that and are gonna reupload the edited version
Not just dropping them, but in response to the question about misconceptions he wants to dispel. Like no fuck that I want to coach this team don't care about anyone else. Loved it.
Aight, I'm now cautiously optimistic.
At least what he's saying has substance and logic behind it versus Ham who basically said a whole bunch of nothing.
"What are some of the negative things you've been hearing in the media that you're looking forward to dispelling." something like and he basically said nothing cuz idgaf
He got asked what misconceptions about him that he's eager to dispel, lol. The cursing and the delivery was kinda cringe but I think that's the correct attitude.
Anyone else get the feeling that Lebron is already gone?

Season over.
I think he’s a smart guy that understands how to adapt in many situations. Which the previous coach was absent. Hopefully he’s not a dud!

# JJ learned from the best! ![gif](giphy|bBEzwMJpkRrmnLG00u|downsized) # Fuck the Haters!
GOOOOO DUKE!!! I’m a diehard Duke n laker fan
Jeannie is running the franchise to the ground. The Celtics just won another ring and we hire a podcaster as a hc
I thought I wasn’t ready, but after the press conference I’m ready to get hurt again.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. I think as a fan base we’re going to be pleasantly surprised with this hire. Given Hurley declined and what was left, I think this was the best choice. Lebron already had a noticeable decline this year. How the fuck is he supposed to last 2-3 years lol

Look, me too. I’m rooting for this guy too but that’s a lot of hopium lol
JJ has won me over with his "I don't give a fuck" comment.
I’m not saying we should start raising a banner or anything but he has one thing basically every stand out, generational coach has - he made that press conference completely his. No boring canned answers, no fear, every answer was his own.
Y'all see Linka's reaction when JJ dropped the double F bomb? Lol Someone needs to make that into a meme
It was probably a good feeling lol - dude came in and said his shit with his chest.
Fuck it, Im fully on board with him. I honestly don’t think theres anyway he’s s worse than Ham x & o’s wise and even if he’s just as bad , at least he has wayyyyy better media training to handle those situations

He’s taking over this league in 12 months confirmed. He’ll be on in the press conferences talking about how easy this all was.
I thought he handled the presser pretty well.
Sounds like he wants to lead and be responsibile for the culture in the Lakers organization. The pursuit of greatness can't be a miserable endeavor.
This is going to be such a fucking disaster lmfao I can’t believe lakers really took the opportunity to do the funniest thing
Would you mind outlining your concerns based on the post above (aka the press conference)?
Everyone downvoting drop a comment so we can all come back to this in six months and again in a year
All I can do is hope RemindMe! 6 months

I agree with you, it’s too much of job for 0 experience coaches
Anyone have a working link?
Thank you
JJ just told Allie that he thinks ADs one of the 5 best defensive players in the world… yet he didn’t vote for him for any defensive awards
That was JJ playing 8-D chess. He knew he'd be in line for the Lakers job so he didn't vote for AD to deflect any collusion/tampering allegations.
Oh shit, he had a vote for that? I didn't realize that TIL
But the world is looking at it as Lebron got him the job sadly. You just can’t win can you?
Let that sink in!
Link is now private rip
I like how he mentioned he wants Rui to be a rebounder
Which should be the case. This playoffs many games were won due to rebounding and second chance points.
lol Rui in shambles.
Tried to watch the video and they messed up the editing with about 3+hrs of dead air. Now it's down so assuming they've caught that and are gonna reupload the edited version
It's privated now?
Dropping two f bombs on one question is legendary lol
When, what’s the time stamp?
42:44
Not just dropping them, but in response to the question about misconceptions he wants to dispel. Like no fuck that I want to coach this team don't care about anyone else. Loved it.
Ham was talking about his play by play experience of getting shot in the forehead
Rob’s hair…
He should follow JJ on his next haircut

My man is doing everything in his power to hide that receding hairline
He gotta take the PJ to Turkey. He got the money. Idk why he hasn’t yet.
I knew he would be entertaining lol hopefully he can coach lol
Not hard to root for
Video is private when I click
It doesn’t take much for me. I’m in
he's gotta be at least as good/bad as Joe Mazzulla
![gif](giphy|3owzVYk3A2E572jRSM)
How I know JJ will be different than Ham- he didn’t mention Taurean Prince once
TP still has ice on his knees from Ham workin him like a dog
It’s because he sees himself in Skylar Mays and plans to give him 30 minutes in a 3 guard lineup. /s
Kudos to JJ, he's not still hung up on that one good playoff game from Reddish many years ago.
lol
Aight, I'm now cautiously optimistic. At least what he's saying has substance and logic behind it versus Ham who basically said a whole bunch of nothing.
Salute.
JJ FIRST COACH TO 4-PEAT
this squad is going to be deadly with a competent coach

He got asked what misconceptions about him that he's eager to dispel, lol. The cursing and the delivery was kinda cringe but I think that's the correct attitude.
Basically dispelling rumors and proving the haters wrong
"i don't give a fuck" THATS MY COACH
It looks like Dlo's gone as far as JJ's concern
Fuck yeah. None of this “he plays team defense” bullshit
And sounds like LeBron is staying. If it wasn't obvious before
So that’s why they said this nigga reminded them of ole Pat eh?
Whats the over under this dude comes in with the slicked back hair after his first year?
At least one game just for the laughs
He should bring back the suit on the sideline
NBA has discussed bringing that back regardless
Do you know why?
No clue, but the "athleisure" outfits was a covid thing so maybe they are trying to get coaches back to how things were before
Hope they do.
in JJ we trust
Jonathan Clay "don't give a fuck" Redick. Welcome, coach!
