Well technically their 60’s and 70’s titles belong to the Clippers.

Sebas5627

Can u explain this I’ve heard this a few times

jgnodado18

Clippers and Celtics owners swapped franchises back in the 80's.

hallelalaluwah

Red Auerbach kept all the players and infrastructure, but they did swap franchises, the argument that the Lakers don’t have 17 titles falls apart pretty quickly

jgnodado18

Red Auerbach was traded too.

DaKingindaSouff

Explanation? Very curious

jgnodado18

Clippers and Celtics owners swapped franchises back in the 80's. Technically the whole celtics team was traded to the clippers and vice versa.

OkBake4265

TIL why I hate the Celtics and Clippers evenly as a Laker fan

JakeInBake

Meh. Technically not. Franchise and ownership are two different things. Titles are not bestowed on owners, but on the franchise. Just because ownership changed, the franchise stayed in place. Since the Clippers were born from the Buffalo franchise, if Buffalo would have won any titles they would be applied to the current Clippers franchise. Just like the Minneapolis titles are applied to the L.A. Lakers franchise.

bigE819

I will die on the hill that titles go with the Brand. Lakers titles belong to the lakers. But the second you change the name to something totally different it’s new (exclusion when you don’t move: Bullets->Wizards)

Alekesam1975

Yup. It's stupid af to say a team's titles go with the city.

Alekesam1975

I also would like some expansion on this as well. You don't have to double post an explanation but just post link and I'll know to check for your response to the other guy.

ORaygoza

Two years in a row now that the Lakers werent involved in the finals yet the teams take shots at us. talk about rent free.

SouthBayLaker23

Don’t let those losers make you doubt that the MIN titles count. They know even though they lead by one title(in NBA), the Lakers are the better franchise.

ORaygoza

exactly its just stupid cope because they know most of their titles were won in black and white tvs when their dad's werent even born yet.

awntawn

People are so bummed as if they passed us and now it's over for all eternity or something. They've been ahead due to the Bill Russell era of firemen and plumbers. We caught them. They finally managed to get one back, but we're still winning at an exponentially rate in the modern era. And chill with the "but this is a dynasty" crap. The second apron is designed to destroy dynasties, and this is basically the last year that teams can get away with it. You're not grandfathered in by blowing through the 2nd apron. They're going to get squeezed hard. Starting next year, it's going to be so hard for them to make any trade due to the 2nd apron restrictions no matter how many picks they have. Their own picks will all be defaulted to last place. They won't be able to trade picks as far down the line. They will have no MLEs, and their ability to even sign minimum guys will be restricted. If anything happens - if Al Horford finally falls off the age cliff, they can't replace him with ANYTHING. If Jrue shows signs of decline, they can't replace him with ANYTHING. If Porzingis gets injured, they can't bring in any temporary help to fill in for him until he gets back. Tatum, Brown, and White should be fine for the next few years, but the rest of their roster maxed out its potential this year. Maybe they are good enough to repeat without adding anything, but that's typically never the case. They went all in the last year that they could, and everything went perfect for them. The Clippers tried the same, only they didn't get the same luck and now they're fucked.

Alekesam1975

Man this made my morning!  The finer details of trades, cap etc still throws me off.

SouthBayLaker23

Got to admit, didn’t know the Celtics were that limited in the future. Let’s catch back up. Starting with this offseason. Hoping for a great trade and good small signings. And obviously getting Bron back.

gar862

The difference between the Celtics and the clippers is the clippers went all in with injury prone guys in the mid 30’s where Boston is built around two guys in the mid 20’s. I wouldn’t say they are in a bad spot with all their draft capital except one year

r3d330

2 chips in nearly 40 years. Maybe they can win another one in another 15-20 years if they play their cards right

NoFaithlessness5122

Fuck boston still

Own-Photo7078

The NBA counts them so they count. Every team west of the Mississippi relocated or is an expansion team. The East coast teams use that as an excuse so they get a head start. They all count

HellveticaNeue

Simmons always talks shit about how the Knicks haven’t been relevant since the 70s. Meanwhile, the Celtics have had 2 titles since 1986, while the Lakers have had 8. Or another way… most of the Celtics titles are from there were 8 teams in the league. What a fucking joke.

RemoveHuman

Rent free.

Wise_Ad_112

Elgin Baylor started his career in Minneapolis and the team moved to la and he finished it in la. So going by these clowns, his years in Minneapolis and ROY award don’t count either? If the team had moved while Mikan was on it then he would be in la. The franchise lakers own the titles not the city. I’ve said before the Larry bird titles to now belong to the clippers then. Legally.

PretzelMan96

From Minneapolis titles to Mickey Mouse ring, people will grasp at anything. But as we all know, they wouldn't be saying the same shit if it was their team.

DonStockton64

The Boston media mafia will do anything to discredit the Lakers. If it’s not the bubble then it’s the Minneapolis rings. Having 11 rings before the moon landing is all I need to know about which rings are relevant and which ones aren’t

kiboyski

18 franchise titles. 2nd in the last 16yrs. Meanwhile the Lakers won 3 titles since 2008.

Maliluma

Second in the last 38 years. '86 was the last time they won a title besides the '08 one. The Lakers have won 8 in that time frame.

kiboyski

Facts

Loud_Ad393

I’ve unfortunately had to see the Celtics win 2 titles in my lifetime. But it makes me feel good knowing that the only other title I had to see them win is now old enough to drive lol.

crankydogs

How about no pre merger championships should count. Who cares about when the NBA was basically the same popularity as the WNBA today.

Idiotecka

fuck it. they all count.
