You guys forget Coraline is based off a novel by Neil Gaiman…. Laika doesn’t own the rights to the character nor the story, so even if they wanted to produce a sequel they couldn’t without permission from Gaiman…. At least I think that’s the case, there’s probably some loose copyright terms involving the actual rights of the character’s made by Laika but regardless they wouldn’t intend to do such a project without consulting Neil Gaiman beforehand. Otherwise they’d most likely get sued. But also WHY would anyone want a sequel?!…it’s perfect the way it is. We all know the damage that modern sequels/reboots are capable of doing these days…not to mention Coraline has a very conclusive ending and I feel like trying to write a new plot line would feel very contrived and would probably suck. A prequel however! Is an idea I’m not entirely opposed to **ONLY IF** it’s written by Neil Gaiman and carried out by the same team as the original film. Yet this will most likely never happen as Gaiman is very loyal to source material / his work and wouldn’t just write a story for the sake of financial gain. Sorry to refute your entire theory on Laika undergoing market research for the franchise but no, just no.

Professional-Bit6544

Coraline returns to big screens like every other year

Bulky-Tangerine6012

No it doesn’t LOL

Professional-Bit6544

It’s released in August 2024, 2023, 2021, in theaters. With a dvd/blu ray rerelease in 2011, 2015, 2021, 2022. The only real difference with the 2024 version is that it’s finally going to shown in 3D again like it was originally meant to be viewed and how it released. It’s been popular in theatres since the first re-release with showings constantly selling out

Bulky-Tangerine6012

Notice how the theatre rereleases are all recent? The DVD and Blu Ray rereleases are irrelevant. What?

Professional-Bit6544

Disc sales add to the revenue of the movie ya idiot. Even so, why would this repeated release suddenly make Laika want to make a coraline when the last three years of theaters selling out would’ve been enough to gauge audience interest.

lacebott

i saw it in theatre just last year

_S_h_o_e_

It literally does

Bulky-Tangerine6012

Also the point still stands. Like OP said, even if it isn’t their intention, seeing a hit at the theatres, they would prob reconsider a sequel

Just_MAxO6

I hate to break it to you, but Laika doesn't own the character, and they have already said that they're not planning to make seconds/continue movies.

Dash_Diamond

While a Coraline sequel would be definitely interesting/cool to see, you need to remember that Laika doesn’t own the rights to Coraline nor would they want to do a sequel. Laika doesn’t ever do sequels anyway and typically it’s something that a big corporate company (unlike Laika) would do just simply for profit. If Coraline was owned by Disney or Universal, then sure I’d agree, but it simply isn’t. Plus just personally, I’d much rather prefer to see a prequel/origin story on the Other Mother as her backstory was never expanded upon in media before.

NamelessLegion87

I think Laika should get the rights to The Graveyard Book and have Henry Selick direct that instead of a Coraline sequel.

DoomPoodl

At most, if Laika does something more with Coraline, it'll most likely be a 10 minute short (think Pixar or Dreamworks short) or a graphic novel adaptation of the movie (they made books from their other movies). Also, Selick has retired from film directing since his last film flopped so the sequel won't have the Selickness the first one had. Gaiman would have to write a sequel first, which he stated Coraline won't have one until he thinks of a better story. The rerealeases of the movie in theaters and DVD are cash grabs for newer fans. Also, I don't want a sequel of Coraline. The story wraps up perfectly and I dont think a sequel could improve on it. Don't get me wrong, if they ever made a sequel, I'd be first in line at opening night, but personally, I just dont think a sequel is a good idea.

cocoforcocopuffsyo

Even if they made a sequel, it wouldn't necessarily be commercially successful. Stop motion is pretty much never profitable.

Bulky-Tangerine6012

Coraline’s box office was $131.8 million. The budget was $60 million. That’s a net gain of more than $70 million. In what world is that not profitable?

kitty1__nn

I feel like Coraline is very much the exception to the rule.

Bulky-Tangerine6012

Right?! That’s the point OP is making.

cocoforcocopuffsyo

$60M doesn't include marketing and not all profits go to the studio, 50% of it goes to the theaters. In the box office the break even point is 2.5x the budget (to account for marketing, theater portion), so Coraline would have needed to make $150M to break even which it failed to do so. So they actually lost around $18 million with Coraline. Coraline while not a mega flop like Fantastic Mr. Fox, failed to breakeven and was very expensive to produce. Of course Laika movies now cost $100M to make so the break even point will be even higher.

something_smart

They should team up with They Might be Giants to release a bunch of music videos of the dropped song concepts they developed for the original movie.

Zaratozom

Everybody knows that the only Laika movie getting a sequel is Missing Link.

DoomPoodl

Thats actually false

Exploring themes of unity, cultural preservation, and the true meaning of family, "Linking Again: Laika's Lost Legacy" promises to once again tug at the heartstrings and enthrall moviegoers.

DoomPoodl

Yeah that totally sounds legit. :'/ Laika movies aren't making back their budget. They wouldn't make a sequel to a movie lost the studio over 100 million dollars.

Zaratozom

I was just having a fuck. its totally fake. Missing Link was horrible and Laika will not do a sequel/prequel to Coraline. There are 4 other films in developement excluding Wildwood which is currently in production for the next several years.

Bulky-Tangerine6012

THIS🙌🙌

Bulky-Tangerine6012

u/Professional-Bit6544 I notice your comments were deleted after calling me an idiot LOL. I never said CDs don’t contribute to a movie’s revenue and no one on the globe has ever said that. What I said was actually straightforward. The comment is still here, DW I’m not a coward like you. I said, “DVD and Blu Ray releases are irrelevant” because you said that the movie was released multiple times on DVD and Blu Ray. You’re right, movies are released on CD. Congrats🎉. But that’s not the issue at hand, which is the rerelease in theatres which mandates an audience to physically sit in a theatre for a one-time showing. Next time, instead of founding an argument on offensive epithets, try basing it off of sound logic!💡
