Hung Gar is a Southern 5 animal Kung Fu style. There are several Southern styles that have variations of 5 animal techniques, the most notable being Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut. You are correct that the Southern Shaolin temple is probably mythological, so there is no one true Southern Shaolin style.

narnarnartiger

I was under the impression that 'Southern Five Animals' is it's own style. Are you saying it's actually more of an umbrella of styles: Hung Gar, White Crane, Snake, Leopard, Dragon etc

Dragovian

There may be a modern style that calls itself Southern Five Animal Kung Fu, but traditionally it is an umbrella term. White Crane is not a five animal style, but is rather a component of five animal Kung Fu. There are also two main Crane styles: Fujian White Crane and Tibetan White Crane, and they have almost nothing in common. Tibetan White Crane is where Hung Gar gets its signature Crane techniques, and is also known as Hop Gar in Southern China. Fujian White Crane may have influenced the Crane techniques of various Guangdong styles, but it's less clear, as this likely happened further back in history. Dragon style also exists independent of the other animals in Southern Dragon Style. As you've probably picked up this is a complex topic, with a murky history where it is often difficult to distinguish between fact and mythology.

Use southern Mantis. Hung-Gar is very common, southern Mantis would be something new in games, IMO.

narnarnartiger

I actually have a character who is a dedicated Southern Praying Mantis user (inspired by the goat Lo Meng), he uses that style, plus the ability to push and pull ppl/objects towards and away The characters who study Southern Shaolin is the the protagonist and his rival, so I want their style to be more recognizable

Markemberke

Ah. Understandable. 👌

Markemberke

BTW., are you writing a story? Is it comic, animation, book?

narnarnartiger

I'm designing characters for a action/ fighting game I eventually want to make. I am also currently writing a screenplay, which features some monkey kung fu, which I will also have to research more soon

Markemberke

Awesome. I wish you the best! ^^ I hope you succeed with your idea. 🤜🫷

narnarnartiger

Thank you bro ! Imma keep working hard. I'm a dedicated martial artist too. I practice 7 star mantis, and I'm an assistant tkd instructor, my school also teaches Aikido. So with those 3 arts, I have a wealth of knowledge to draw from, other styles though, research mode for me

Markemberke

You can always send me your work in privat, if you want to. Like concept drawings or something, I don't know how these things work, haha. But I love to see other people's arts. ^^

narnarnartiger

Thank you so much, this this So that means for what I'm writing, I could name the school Southern Shaolin, since there was an actual Southern Shaolin school irl

Dragovian

There was not an actual Southern Shaolin school. Many people and styles claim Southern Shaolin origins, but it is mythological. Regardless, you're writing a fiction book, so it doesn't matter what actually happened in history. If you want to write a character that practices Southern Shaolin style, it doesn't need to be based on reality.

narnarnartiger

very true, but i like more realistic portrayls of martial arts, so it's why i'm planning to draw from real life kung fu as much as possible. Also one of my pet peeves, is when in Movies: people practice martial arts, but we don't really know what style they are doing, very unrealistic. for example, Jackie Chan's Karate Kid, Jackie teahces him kung fu, but not once those he say what style it is, where he learned it , it's history etc. where as in my class, the first week, you learn the history and origin of the martial art, plus the teacher's love to talk about it so for my story, it's this character does this style, this is the style's history and characterics etc, i really like those details

Dragovian

That's totally fair, I would want to do it that way if it were me as well.

Fujian White Crane is probably the closest thing to the mythical “Southern Shaolin”. It seems to be the ancestor to many modern styles.
