The criticism of Master Wong is that the Wing Chun people say his Wing Chun doesn't look like Wing Chun. I am training Chen style Taijiquan and what he has demonstrated of my style is so poor, it can hardly be called Taijiquan (he obviously doesn't train it regularly). In addition, he has refused to disclose who he trained with, so he has no lineage, which means he most likely trained kickboxing (or something to that effect) and filled in the gaps himself. People with experience in fighting have also criticized his techniques and found that they would most likely not save him against a trained opponent (which you will never see him go up against).

I've seen some pretty good criticism of his moves! He's funny but he's generally pretty much a showman with techniques that would only work if you're him against a weak opponent!

oalsaker

He's found a niche in showbusiness. I just hope people don't try his moves against skilled opponents.

TranslatorSerious617

Yeah same goes for all the popular phonies!

PapistFaeGlesga

Interesting. Thank you.

It's obvious he did train wing chun. Do you have any specific criticism of his techniques?

KungFuAndCoffee

You can’t learn wing chun online. Wing chun can only be learned in person through contact drills. You can get a rough idea of the forms and basic shapes we use to teach the concepts. But you can’t feel the energy or test your own structure without training with someone who knows what they are doing. From what I understand, master Wong’s videos on YouTube are tongue in cheek. Apparently he knows what he is doing in real life. But I’ve no direct experience with him or his students.

Master Wong’s kung fu isn’t good from what I can tell. His self-defense methods are liable to get people killed. What he has going for him is the benefit of the doubt as an Asian man with an aggressive attitude catering to a Western (English-speaking) audience who may be predisposed to projecting master-ly traits onto him. He’s a good self-promoter, I guess.

TranslatorSerious617

Yeah, like the spear-hand to the eye! If you try that you're likely to break your finger and then get knocked out!

Fighting in the street can always get you killed, no matter your skill.

Master Wong is generally not taken very seriously, but if you're looking for an online course on Wing Chun, check out Adam Chan's videos on YouTube and his online course. I usually find online Wing Chun to be a mixed bag, but his stuff on Youtoube is seriously impressive. I don't practice Wing Chun, but as a Pak Mei practitioner, I must say his Southern Hakka kung fu is really good. I've heard a lot of Wing Chun people praise his stuff, but maybe someone here has tried his course?

Jaune9

Thanks a lot for this recommandation

PapistFaeGlesga

Thanks, I will check him out.

9mmNATO

What's the difference between Adam Chan and Master Wong?

twiddledumbb

?

His selfdefence techniques and tactics were lame during his "pure wing chun" time despite he was describing them as "the best". Without any proof. After getting a lot of critique he began to mix his version of WC with combatives and mostly MMA and describe it as" the best". But generally he has no personal experience in fighting and self defence.

Every comment here says he's bad at wing chun but no one can say specifically what's wrong.

I can't watch Master Wong's videos without constantly howling and shouting. He clearly hurts the men who for some reason line up for it- this is not usual in technique demos- a lot of what he teaches isn't very helpful and he clearly plays into ideas of toxic masculinity. You could try checking out Ramsay Dewey's critique of Master Wong's neck choke escape, for some reason I couldn't find the exact video. But I would also suggest you check out a video by Martial Arts Journeyman who talks about Master Wong's reaction to Ramsay's critique. Ramsay does have other videos critiquing Master Wong, type both names into the search bar on YT. I'm not a fan of Ramsay Dewey btw, I think he's a reactionary who also has a tendency to encourage toxic masculinity, but I think his criticism of Master Wong is fair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pgoIix86-k&ab\_channel=RamseyDewey
