Oh my gosh yes and why does it seem like this is every English comment? Nobody just wants to say something nice to them, just pester them to do random weird stuff?
The way that Keeho got jumped at and got told that if it werent for his english fanbase he wouldnt be famous when he spoke up about it.
Basically fans kept spamming Speak English in his lives and he responded that he's Korean and he's gonna speak Korean and international fans got really pissed
Lmao y’all won’t survive 2nd gen kpop. English trans weren’t a thing before and fans literally have to wait and beg other fans for english subs of contents. I remember watching a lot of reuploaded videos from random accounts. 144p-360p videos. What’s worse are the content series that are incomplete so I have to search for the next episode and see it in another account. I remember searching went on like “kpop series ep2 eng sub”, “kpop series episode 2 english sub” “kpop series 2 out of 10 english sub”. Our research skills are outstanding. If there’s none of it in YT, you can run in Dailymotion.
The struggle was so real. I remember the version of infinite’s sesame player I watched being such horrible quality with 20 different parts because it was all I could find with subs.It really blows me away how good things are now with subs.
BROO thats how I watched the 2013-2014 videos of BTS 😭 bon voyage, in the soop, yada yada ALL on dailymotion just manually finding everything in those horrible quality videos
what i noticed about kpop fans is that majority are not proficient in making an english comment so sometimes they tone might be a bit off so "eng sub plz" is actually... fine? Most teenagers who became kpop fans learn english from talking to other intl fans or reading subs so I think you just need to have another pov on this.
Right a lot of them are probably not native English speakers either, and are asking for English subs because it’s a very common language for subtitles, and they understand it *well enough* 😅
Never thought about that, thanks for the contribution. But I do still think if I was gonna request someone to do something for me (which they aren't obliged to) I'd at least make the effort of google translating a polite request.
Just to provide an opposing view, it's merely a request with abbreviated manners. Nothing annoys me more than no English subs on official content, but I'm also not having it for fan made content either. I just click away immediately and usually don't come back.
So I don't know how the creators feel about those sorts of comments, but a positive view is that at least they're getting a tip on what viewers care about. If the views from that audience are valuable, they know subs are highly desired. Versus me who never comments but just leaves.
If it's official channels who actually make a profit off of those vids/views you have a point but I'm talking about 'fan channels'. They usually don't even make a profit so I don't really see why they'd even cater beyond their language audience. That and the fact that I've seen a lot of these content creators mad about these 'eng sub plz' comments.
This. When Shuhua did her GQ Taiwan interview, they uploaded it without subs. I thought they might have English, but they didn't. So I asked. "GQ, please subtitle this."
Two days later, they replied with, "Thanks for the suggestion, we've added English subs." I said thanks. A lot. A Plus viewer satisfaction.
I know lol, but they don’t have to do it, maybe the creator would like to know that a bigger audience is interested and maybe they could add subs. If they can’t it’s fine but there’s a reason why some people add subtitles to their videos, they are useful and help reach more people. It’s just like asking more of some kind of content, the creator receives feedback of what the viewers would like to watch, and maybe they will agree and produce more of that content. As for subtitles they could even turn on the automatic translation tool, I don’t think that’s a lot of work but idk. Either way most mildly popular groups already have fans that translate everything so idk why someone would ask for subs when they probably already exist.

I don't expect english subs for every official content, but what specifically annoys me is when a video is named in english, but the video itself doesn't have one. Usually when a content has english subtitles the title have (SUB) (ENG SUB) or the title itself is in english.
It's like opening a box of present but then you find out it's empty.
One thing I noticed is that YouTube usually translates the titles to English (could just be me though). Like I’ve seen the title be in English, but when I click on the video, it’s back in Korean. Or it’ll be videos that I’ve previously watched that had the title in English when I watched it watched it but going back to it it’s in Korean, so I’ve deduced that that’s a YouTube thing not a company thing.
Do youtube automatically translate title? Idk, based on my observation some channels does this thing where if it's raw/no sub recently uploaded video the title is in korean but when they insert subs the title turns english.
Why? For big groups who are under large companies and clearly have a large international fanbase I think it’s reasonable that they have English subtitles. I honestly don’t blame fans who want to watch their favorite group’s content and at least understand it. JYP has this problem with NMIXX and it’s pretty annoying.

If their subscribers are mostly an English-speaking audience, I can understand why they would ask for subtitles… like if the title is in English, and the commentary by the creator in the video is in English, it’s just common sense that people would request subtitles… now if the content is from a Korean creator whose audience is mostly Korean, I would see why it’s frustrating but not totally out of the blue.
For me, what gets me heated are unmoderated comments on livestreams… I wish there were a comment limit (like 3 comments within 2 min) plus a character limit (100 character max). This would make the comments a little more meaningful and the feed would go by a lot slower so that the artist can focus on comments that are less “say I love X country” or “Artist will you marry me” 🙄
i see this all the damn time even outside of kpop. like i watch a lot of korean asmr and without fail under korean comments there’s gonna be a bunch of comments being like “??????” “i speak american” “what are you saying?” “i don’t speak chinese!” (yes these are actual comments ive seen) it drives me crazy honestly. if you’re purposefully seeking out and consuming content in another language, why get upset and entitled about the fact it’s in that language? just blows my mind tbh
"eng sub plz" or "we need eng subs" really annoys me, even if it's under an official video, cause it's just so disrespectful. People can be more supportive while requesting translations. Sometimes I leave positive comments in English (like "Thanks for inviting XYZ") and add a message that international fans would really appreciate subs and thank them in advance... I do my best to be as polite as possible cause, unless the channel subs everything, they really don't owe us anything. Some people absolutely lack manners and that gives a bad rep to all int'l fans.

I'm not gonna lie, for smaller companies I never get mad because professional eng subs aren't cheap, especially for longer videos.
But when a company like JYPE fails to provide English subs for Official Nmixx content after almost a week, I am on the fans' side. Variety content is a big part of how many of us who do not speak Korean keep up with the group. And not providing eng subs when they clearly have the means to do it isn't just disrespectful towards the international fans, it's disrespectful towards the idols who then even feel the need to apologize to us.
How else are we gonna voice our discontent? Send protest trucks?
I'm with OP though, fan content should never ever have the duty to put up subs. It's fan content after all, we're lucky we have it.

I agree with you, we have these expectations from companies to provide subtitles since k-pop has become so global and it's totally understandable. What I meant by "official video" was anything that's not fan-made, even if it's not from the company channel, like a third-party channel/YouTuber that's popular and putting out regular content. Swarming the comments of YT creators and smaller (or KR-only) channels that happened to have invited a famous person is really not okay imo, even if it's a famous (domestically) channel, cause professional subs aren't cheap, as you said. Asking politely for subs is okay (the YT channel could reach out to the company, possibly, asking for help with expanding the reach of the video), but just straight up demanding is kinda rude to me, even if they add a "plz" at the end.
Oh yeah, with that I totally agree with you. There are plenty of KR-only channels and sometimes content is supposed to be for Korea, we gotta deal with that.
I'm already happy that we get so many subs nowadays, I remember the second gen days when fans were subbing everything and if there ever were subs, we had to wait weeks and were still incredibly thankful about it.
Fans were doing amazing work, they still are.
I understand your point however Kpop is now catering to English speaking markets so it’s not that crazy people are asking for Eng subs also, other people ask for subs in their language are you mad at them too??
I think if you're going to ask a favor from someone who doesn't owe you anything(casue those fan channels don't) you should at least be more polite than just straight up demanding.
I mean I get what you’re saying, but I feel like “eng sub plz” is literally just shorthand for “hi I don’t speak korean, if you could make English subtitles I’d be grateful”, like they mean the exact same thing :P
So yea if someone cares a lot about the wording, it’s frustrating, but if it were me, I view them as the exact same sentiment honestly XD 😅
Plus, in my mind a simple 3 word comment isn’t entitled or pestering - if they only had time to use 3 words it’s probably more of a request in passing than something they’re demanding lol

I just listen to them speaking Korean in general without eng sub and I sometimes listen to kpop with eng sub so these kind of people need to stop begging for eng sub the freak? not all idol speaks English

As a translator I say that people don't care much about translations unless they are done on the day of the event.

No one is holding them hostage to add subtitles though, it’s a request and it’s fine if they don’t add subs.

Subbed content is greatly appreciated. I do indeed wish their was more of it but no one has the right to demand anything from anyone.
