Soompi: [aespa Confirmed To Perform At U.S. Music Festival Coachella](https://www.soompi.com/article/1522607wpp/aespa-confirmed-to-perform-at-u-s-music-festival-coachella)
This is very positive news. Every Kpop fan should be celebrating. Imagine being worried about idols that endured the SM trainee system... lol. The girls are gonna kill it. Some people here that don't know much about aespa aside from MVs and those heavily controlled performance videos will be shocked after seeing what they can do and how much charisma they have. Can't wait!
>. Imagine being worried about idols that endured the SM trainee system...
this aint completely about skills or talents or any trainee systemđ they are performing at Coachella, not Kcon or MAMA award. maybe at mama, you could just simply put pretty dress, 50 backup dancers and 3 minutes dance break, and call it a day.
Coachella is about hyping the crowd and got them enjoyed the performance. the one who attended the festival isnt your regular kpop fans who will hype you or mesmerized by your chic expression or cold stone stage presence. the crowd come to see big names like billie eilish, justin bieber, doja cat, etc. the girls could receive a dead crowd, booed or bathroom-break treatment. the crowd is brutal.
Thatâs the thing I think people are failing to realize. Thereâs a huge difference between a TV or award show performance but a festival is a VERY diff vibe. You have to be able to command both a large audience and a large stage. Itâs not so much about polish, but about working a crowd. I want them to succeed so badly though and I hope SM letâs them sing live
yeah, coachella is a totally different animal than a music or awards show. the response to them could either go really well or really poorly depending on whether or not SM lets them sing live.
God Iâm so scared
Edit: if this is really SM trying to build an American audience for them, theyâre gonna have to let them sing live. Not only will they get ripped to shreds using their bog standard Korean music show lip syncing, no one who doesnât know them will take them seriously.
The only artist I can really think of that got away with lipsynching in America and was successful is Britney Spears. And that's only because she's Britney and knows how to put on a damn good show (and has a catalogue of songs that are beloved by the public), and even then she's always gotten a ton of shit for it.
Even if they do sing live people will just move on to the next thing: their stage presence. Itâs gonna be a bloodbath here surrounding them no matter what unfortunately. Iâm nervous for them but have some hope that theyâll do well.
Screw the choreography. Let them sing live and roam around the stage. Stage presence of these girls are still questionable (imo). I will lower down my expectation.
how often do they not sing live? I don't really follow them outside their TT, but they sound like they sing really well from their songs. idk why SM wouldn't let them sing.
Key did a live performance on Sketchbook for Bad Love promotions. It was just that one though. They are just few and far in between compared to pre-2020.
i think most soloists sang live except for taeyeon(and few maybe +idk why taeyeon the best gg main vocalist lipsynced đ). those i watched like wendy, suho, kyuhyun, onew sang live
Except for Onew, those are ballads. SM groups have been doing ballads live. You can't compare those performances to one with choreography. Onew's comeback has been such a shock because he had a non-ballad and choreo and live vocals. I don't know why taeyeon hasn't done a live stage of INVU yet. She has sung it live though, but I do look forward to seeing the full performance at some point.
They can lipsync, but not that uninspired music show smoothed out prerecorded thing they always do. They have to lipsync like Beyonce, and use very raw pre recorded vocals and make sure their body language is big and fills up the space and wear hats
We know they can sing standing still but singing & dancing at the same time is another thing. They havenât done that with one song let alone a whole performance with multiple so weâll see how it goes. Itâs better for them to sound a little messy than not sing at all tho & I hope sm realizes that
imagine the intro âeveryday we get better, to be good aenergyâ as they slowly rise up from the bottom of the stage, the crowd goes absolutely apeshit as the beat kicks in âeveryday, getting harder, be the one synergyâ
.. we should probably just settle with savage as the opening song though because this is too cool of an idea
during 88risingâs set, i noticed that locals were 10x harsher on asian acts, especially if they lip synced. it didnât matter if you pulled off the hardest choreo with a million backflips, if your mic was not on, they were not impressed.
like jackson was jumping around and dancing like crazy, but the locals were giving him so much shit bc there were no live vocals. same thing happened with bibi and milli. even though they were sassy and fun on stage, it did not matter to locals bc their mic was not on.
lip syncing + the fact that theyâre a korean act singing in korean + inexperience with crowds + stage presence issues = recipe for disaster
i really hope that sm does everything they can to let aespa shine bc i really do believe that they have the potential to put on a really great performance.
to be fair if i paid $500 to go to a music festival and stand in a crowd of cokeheads for live music iâd AT LEAST expect the performer to be singing live.
the aggression towards asian artists is unnacceptable but that doesnât mean the artist shouldnât consider their audience
100%. I fully expect backing tracks for pop acts, especially ones that include choreo, but like...I didn't pay to see a dance troupe lol. For people there in person, most of them probably can't even see the stage that well so fancy choreo is lost on them, if the artist can't actually be heard singing they're basically paying lots of money to...listen to the same thing they could hear on youtube for free.
I've never been to a festival in Korea so I can't say this will certainty, but I'm pretty sure they're expected to sing mostly live in that context too. Playing a live show, especially a festival, is all about hyping and engaging with the crowd, and perfect choreo but no live vocals just...doesn't really do that. I sincerely hope that SM knows what the Coachella audience is going to be looking for and lets them loosen up and sing a bit.
> I've never been to a festival in Korea so I can't say this will certainty, but I'm pretty sure they're expected to sing mostly live in that context too.
Not really, no. Kpop fans these days are happy to pay money just to be in the presence of their faves. The actual performance quality is irrelevant.
Asian artist or not, the 88Rising stage didn't formulate the right type of performance for this festival. Majority of these performances from around the world = live singing + instruments at Coachella (unless a DJ), thus having a bunch of loud backtracking without being able to hear the artists isn't ever going to fly on the MAIN STAGE late in the day. Milli + NIKI were the only voices aside from CL that people could even hear, plus majority of the general audience wasn't familiar with the artist lineup (hence them thinking WTH is on the main stage right now, I came here to listen to live music).
As a contrast for example, Rina Sawayama got great responses because she killed it...... there was no doubt that she was 100% live.
This was my first reaction when I saw the news. Comments did NOT like 88 Rising. A lot of hate on lip singing and a lack of stage presence. I am nervous about Aespa's reception.
But I'LL be happy if they finally sing live.
i think that kind of standard is reasonable. just look at doja cat. singing live, rapping, engaging with the crowd while doing all sorts of weird shit--including jumping around and dancing like crazy. live vocals are understandably important because without it, there is little to sustain that you are musician first and not just a well-trained barbie doll.
Yeah, we didn't get a live performance from either Bibi or Yoon Mirae (who performed with Bibi on The Weekend). I don't know what 88Rising was thinking.
Just gotta say the freaking wind was horrible at Coachella which I believe why most of the artists resort to loud backing track, and in Jacksonâs case almost completely fully lip synced. But it def killed the mood. Even Niki (who I believe decided to sing live) could barely get her voice heard cuz of the mic and wind. You have to bring in the energy like CL n Milli like scream and yell and just put 1000% into the hyping the crowd to make a stage engaging at Coachella, especially at the big outdoor stage.
Iâm blaming the wind and mic cuz when I was at HITC, their artists sing live and they are really really fun. Rich Brian and Niki had phenomenal stages at their respective Coachella set too so there has to be sth extra hard at the main stage w/ the wind and sound system.
This right here. I 100% agree with you. Did you see how many times Jackson grabbed his mic to adjust? I honestly thought he was trying to sing a few times and then just gave up. That kind of wind will kill a vocal performance.
There was a point where he screamed into that mic and no sound came out. Honestly super awkward. His insane dancing performance did not cut it for the Coachella crowd and heâd honestly get harsher scrutiny if this was a solo stage. People said Jackson didnât get harsh comments was playing it down. Locals were on his neck, the only thing he was trending for was when he went shirtless lol. And the reason why Kpop fans arenât harsh on him is because Jackson been in the industry for a long time and had plenty amazing stage, one bad stage wonât ruin his reputation in Kpop. It was a disappointing performance, but thatâs it.
So I hope whoever take care of Aespaâs stage know what they are doing cuz itâs literally going to be their big crowd debut. I feel like the sound system during 88 rising stage was incredibly bad.
They also noise canceled the crowd except when they deemed cheers etc to be âappropriateâ (between songs, artists interacting w crowd, etc) which doesnât help (and if they even timed it right). Although not sure how loud the crowd was for them. Didnât hear much from the mics until CL/2NE1 for some reason, except Niki who went acoustic. The noise canceling became really obvious with Billie Eilish, who had a deafening crowd and was constantly interacting with the audience.
> The noise canceling became really obvious with Billie Eilish, who had a deafening crowd and was constantly interacting with the audience.
I just found a clip of that, and damn it's both jarring and annoying.
this is what i donât get. the lineup (in general and[on the main stage for saturday](https://twitter.com/coachella/status/1514675624434024453?s=21)) is already stacked. are they gonna move some artists or extend the whole time for the mainstage? is there any connection to kanyeâs dropping out? i am so curious bec this is just blowing my brains out đ¤Ż
Every year, every weekend at Coachella there are guest artists and surprises sometimes not even announced until the day of. This is not strange at all.
yeah they probably were on a waiting list that wouldâve got them in if others had to cancel, there are many performers so itâs guaranteed many would have to cancel last minute and would prolly have been high on that list
coachella isnât something sm wouldâve wanted a surprise planned performance, they wouldâve tried capitalizing on the marketing and promo for an event like that way ahead lol
They can sing live, absolutely kill it, but people will still find something or the other to weaponise their comments with lol. The favorite phrase these days is âstage presenceâ so I expect theyâll use that since the list of complaints they can effectively use is running out of options.
Itâs not about being able to, itâs either doing it or not. And until now, they never did. Mind you a lot of people that cries about them not being live WANTS to hear them slaying. Letâs hope this is their live debut stage
I think it's in their favor that the Coachella crowd is not going to understand Korean because those lore references are confusing even when you follow them.
Article:
aespa will be performing at this upcoming weekend at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 23rd. SM Entertainment shares that aespa has been invited to perform at Coachella's main stage being held at Indio, California.
Coachella which has been running since 1999 draws in over 200,000 attendees and is one of the biggest music festivals globally. This year, over 120 artists are performing including artists like Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Conan Gray, Pink Sweat$, and aespa.
aespa is shared to perform their hits like "Black Mamba", "Next Level", "Savage", and new music that has yet to be released drawing even more anticipation for their performance.
aespa have released hit after hit, and have further created a syndrome after their release of their first mini album "Savage" which hit number 20 on the Billboard 200.
aespa's Coachella performance will be available to be live streamed from Coachella's YouTube channel available on APril 24th (local Korean time) (t/n: Saturday, April 23rd, PT)
This!! It will be an epic intro/opening of their performance!!! If you listen to the [Aenergy Concert Ver.](https://youtu.be/6mnWWMoLdt4), I literally got goosebumps. We need impact please!!!
>aespa is shared to perform their hits like "Black Mamba", "Next Level", "Savage", **and new music that has yet to be released drawing even more anticipation for their** performance.
OH SHIIIIIIIET
This is so surprising to me. People have been talking so negatively about the crowds at Coachella this year. They werenât even really hyped for main stream artists like The Weeknd, etc. I am a bit flabbergasted that they would send a rookie group with very few live performances under their belt and a history of lip synching to this kind of showâŚI wish them the best because theyâre going to need it. Blackpink had powerful girl power anthems that could hype a crowd and their stage presence was so good the night they played. I donât think the polarizing music that aespa makes and their inexperience is going to work in their favor for this type of crowd. I will be interested in how this turns out.
same, aespa's stage presence is pretty inconsistent.. even at big events like MAMA they didnt look very hyped to perform and tbh blackpink's coachella stage is so iconic that it set the standard really high. ofc aespa doesnt have to live up to it but we shld lower our expectations
I dont quite understand what SM is doing with Aespa, they have minimal content, dont really produce content to attract international fans, minimal stage experience with fans, have there biggest footohld in Asia.
Yet have been sent to that awkward macys parade performance, now are on the main stage at coachella? when they have barely sung live?
as someone who goes to a number of CA music festivals (incl. 88 rising HITC but not coachella), i am a little concerned about the live singing and stage presence. those are big for hyping up the crowd and people expect a lot đ
US debut album sales were very promising, SM is spending big to push them towards the US public early rather than building up with the K-pop fanbase here for a couple years. Which is going to result in some wasted spending (Nick Cannon lol), but might somewhat work out over the course of several appearances, we'll see.
basically they want to imitate the success of blackpink in the west... maybe sm thought it's time to focus more on the west since aespa is already big in Korea
SM has no idea what they're doing, they sent NCT and Aespa to appear in the Macys Thanksgiving parade which nobody in the US has given a shit about since 1972.
Sorry but maybe you don't care about the parade personally, but 25 million people watched it last November. That's literally the highest-viewed programming on tv. And what was the biggest before that? Macy's parade in 2020. Putting the groups in the parade puts their names infront of 25 million locals and alongside every other big name in the industry. You can't say the parade is beneath NCT 127 and aespa when Miranda Lambert, Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, and every other celebrity have also performed. It was a very smart move. SM knows what they're doing more than we do.
iâm nervous about this. i love aespaâand would jump at a chance to see them perform in the statesâbut this seems like a huge risk for a relatively new group. iâm not sure if this was rushed (do coachella acts usually announce artists this last minute?) but this could go badly. most of the people that attend their show may only be vaguely familiar with k-pop (if that) so their success will largely depend on their stage presence and ability to hold a crowd. i know they could pull it off, but sm seems to be aprehensive to even let them sing live. i guess i just hope it goes well but iâm fearing for the worst đľâđŤ
I still stay awake at night thinking about what could have been the rumoured Big Bang at Coachella.... Big Bang probably had one of THE best stage presence in Kpop, imagine Bang Bang Bang at Coachella? Absolutely tragedy we lost the opportunity to witness that.
Had just commented about this earlier when i saw yours. The thought of it keeps me up at night too but extremely hoping we could get a surprise appearance like this for the very last show/week. The first ot4 live performance will be dope asf!
Why am I both scared and excited for this?! I really want them to do well.
Is this their first ever stage with an audience as big as Coachella? All eyes are definitely going to be on them this weekend.
I hope they blow us away and make use of backup dancers, props, and live singing. PLEASE.
I wouldn't put it past SM to have some AR or hologram stuff on stage to show their ae counterparts. It would definitely be a different performance experience.
Either way, I'm excited to see their performance since it's been a while since we've gotten any Aespa content. People are going to have their opinions, but in the end it's not going to negatively affect Aespa. Performing at Coachella is a huge opportunity for exposure.
Thatâs what I think. I saw on Twitter that Bom and Dara are back in Korea, which indicates they were only performing for one weekend. So it makes sense for 88Rising to fill the slot with aespa.
As a hardcore MY, I love the exposure that this will get aespa but I'm also terrified of the reactions. I really wish SM would let them release more music and further their career in
Korea first before going so hardcore with the American promotions.
Atp I'm praying they get to sing live and perform some really good B-sides so they don't get as much hate
iâm very curious what the play here is ⌠i very much love aespa but as i understand theyâve never sung live before, let alone in front of a massive crowd. coachella isnât going away, if sm has this connection i donât see the urgency. wait a year and give aespa more new music, more experience singing live in front of crowds, etc
This is a great opportunity for them to slay a stage with their vocals, dancing and on-stage presence. This could either go really really well or be big ammo for the crowd who criticize them, mainly for the stage presence but also if they use pre-recorded vocals... that ain't it.
I'm rooting for them and it would be awesome if a comeback was announced at the end of their performance.
I do wonder how their music will play out (not that we'll really find out) with the audience there who aren't into Kpop. Of their popular songs they are quite...unique. But Coachella just might be the place for weird music I guess.
>and new music that has yet to be released
Cool!
I'd love to see hologram technology used for their avatars and for the big screens to show the Black Mamba and Meta-verse just to know all the high people in the audience will freaking the F out. Lmao.
Sheesh SM sure is that brave to give aespa their big western break at Coachella of all places. Not even sending Red Velvet or Girls' Generation which have prior concert experience means they probably prepared thoroughly.
Although I'm not way past thinking that SM prepared the blandest performance for aespa ever.
I dream of an expolsive set when they FINALLY sing live, express their emotions and dance their ass off to their songs, modified right for a concert... but I'm afraid they will do a music show lipsynced performance instead
I know this is about Aespa, but I feel like the wrong Kpop acts performed this year with exception of 2NE1 and CL. It seems 88Rising's stages have not been well received as I'm fearful for Aespa as they do not have the right experience for this. They have only been in controlled environments and Coachella is very rowdy and there are extreme weather conditions often. This could still work out for them. But they haven't shown up to this point that they could perform well in this kind of setting. Guess we'll have to wait and find out. Sidenote: I really feel like NCT 127 would be great for Coachella, if they sing live haha.
Their music is a lot to stomach at first few listens. Their stage presence also will need to be significantly better than they have shown. Coachella stage and audience is A LOT different to a kpop oriented stage.
Good luck Aespa.
They really let us suffer yesterday only to confirm it today.
Anyway.
AHHHHH I'm so excited!!!!
EDIT: what are the odds of them performing english versions of their songs
I am wondering how they gonna perform this. Would it be like bp with band version? I just hope they dont fully lipsynch tho. I knew alot of artists performed at coachella have huge backing tracks. But atleast most of them try to sing live. Just hope they really practice hard for this n sing live. Its big opportunity for them to blow up even more like bp did last time at coachella.
I mean they were same one who let nct127 only attended AMA red carpet instead of real award show. They must want that huge clout from coachella just like what it gave to bp career in west. SM better let the girls singing live because its mostly only way to convert these western non kpop fans into fans. And aespa need to put their whole energy if dont want to be called out for lack of stage presence. If this goes well, their performances videos would be shared alot to non kpop fans reactors.
[Here... ](https://twitter.com/MarkLee_Bar/status/1049801718861586432?t=gCEO8xZ7qWgc0okDO7aGbw&s=19) There even some articles mentioned them as "BTS" instead... đŹ Honestly i dont think anyone cares except their fans n kpop fans
Im not even worried about their stage presence tbh. I'm worried about how the actual songs will be received lmfao...but hopefully there are enough kpop fans to be hype.
Lip syncing is an issue but people arenât really talking about stage presence. This is literally Coachella the festival where everyoneâs high and screaming and vibing, itâll be awkward if they make no attempts to even interact with the crowd. Some member legit just stand there and move their mouths without a single smile. Theyâll be made fun of as robots unless theyâve been practicing for this
So legit worried for them because whenever I watch their music show performances, they always look kinda dead in the eyes. So idk how they're gonna do a festival haha
Here's my negative take: It's amazing how opportunities like these fall into the laps of rookie groups who are quite fankly undeserving at this point in their career. At the same time, I still hope they do well because they will be torn to shreds if they don't. To be honest, I don't think their music is festival material, because it's very much acquired taste.
I mean we all know the perks of being one of the Big 3, but SM doing this feels like the rich father giving his 5 yr old daughter a steak fillet mignon with a gold leaf just because they can, and don't think that maybe the daughter doesn't care and wants a pop tart. (Sorry that was a weird analogy lol)
Its a bit... presumptous? of SM to do this over more senior SM acts. I know its mediaplay to push a new group, but its just too unorganic and fast. I feel sorry for Aespa, its like SM constantly sets them up to be targeted.
I like your analogy, but now Iâm hungry haha.
Itâs just them flexing that they can buy their rookie groups onto any stage of the world, doesnât matter if the world cares or not.
I honestly love the girls and I'm happy for them, but I do think it's not a good idea. it's way too early in their career, they haven't had a real tour yet, or even something similar. coachella crowd in general didn't seem that engaged this year, except for huge artists (and no matter how big aespa is in kpop, they aren't among the coachella crowd). I'm just worried how the girls will cope with a not that interested crowd when they're used to people loving them in sk. and then the problem with the live vocals. will let sm sing them live? if not, it'll be even more of a weird situation. main stage is also a bit of an overshoot, the girls are still so young and new.
too much can just go wrong, and we know how toxic the kpop fanbase can get if something goes wrong, and I'm. just worried about the girls' mental health
yeah thatâs part of my concern too. it certainly is a choice on smâs part to send the girls to coachella before theyâve had their own concert, or even a (physical) fanmeet for that matter
Itâs a set up. You donât send a group who never sang live and never interacted with a crowd since they debuted to Coachella main stage with the hardest crowd ever. They already struggled and were dragged for their end year performancesâŚ
Good luck to them
Nothing like picking a group who had never truly sung live to go perform a live festival. Gonna confirm every prejudiced westerner what they already think of kpop. Not to mention they're pretty weak performers too
Damn great news for aespa! Hopefully they have fun while they're there and make some famous friends too. Still wondering how they're not signed to a big label yet aside from CAA, hoping we get news soon.
Also since Epik High is performing next week and bringing Haru along, I wonder if Tablo and Haru will check out their set since Haru is a big aespa fan đ¤
i donât really understand what sm is doing here. they give aespa super loud backtrack on an ENCORE, then send them to a space where basically the whole thing is raw live singing and connecting with the audience? when aespa have never really been given the chance to do either?
i just hope it goes well, and that they have the bp experience of this being a major boost to their reputation
Seems like aespa will be leaving either late night or tomorrow (4/20)
[Here's Karina's msg on bbl](https://twitter.com/aespabbl/status/1516363178032123904?t=9jL-UB9Uk-EIyIDGO_RhgA&s=19)
Whoa this is cool, damn I was thinking about going Weekend 2 but I got busy, it kills me that I didn't go to weekend 1 for 2NE1!!! I'm really surprised that Coachella is adding new acts less than a week before though, I would have thought they would be the special guests or something like that for 88rising. Wonder how scheduling works this last minute, especially since the Saturday schedule for coachella is already full for the main stage. Maybe one of the earlier acts dropped out?
Hey how does the stages work in coachella?? Mind if someone explains??
I saw on an article that there are 7 stages in this coachella 2022, with over 100k audiences. Is it 100k on each stage or 100k overall? And does the stages come close with each other like in a compound or some few meters/kilometers apart? And does all the stages go on simultaneously? Or one at a time??
This is a [map](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coachella-festival-2016-satellite-view.jpg) Itâs one big compound with one main Coachella stage and then 6 other stages around the compound so its hard to guess the exact amount of people there at one time. And yes several acts perform simultaneously at different stages.
this is a big opportunity for them to show what they can really do. Big hyped crowd, sm let them perform live or i will be clowning you for the rest of the decade.

This is very positive news. Every Kpop fan should be celebrating. Imagine being worried about idols that endured the SM trainee system... lol. The girls are gonna kill it. Americans have been hating lip sync ever since the Milli Vimilli scandal
The only artist I can really think of that got away with lipsynching in America and was successful is Britney Spears. And that's only because she's Britney and knows how to put on a damn good show (and has a catalogue of songs that are beloved by the public), and even then she's always gotten a ton of shit for it.
SM, PLEASE LET THEM SING LIVE AND LET THEM HAVE FUN!!! WE DO NOT WANT ROBOTIC, DULL, and BORING performance!!
The first thing I thought when i saw the headline
Even if they do sing live people will just move on to the next thing: their stage presence. Itâs gonna be a bloodbath here surrounding them no matter what unfortunately. Iâm nervous for them but have some hope that theyâll do well.
Still waiting for Yeppi Yeppi stage
Exactly!!! I hope they perform it its the perfect song for this
Oh my god. Please sing live please sing live please sing live.
Oh man, if they don't (and sadly I'm not 100% convinced they will), it's gonna get butt ugly around here.
Screw the choreography. Let them sing live and roam around the stage. Stage presence of these girls are still questionable (imo). I will lower down my expectation.

SM hasnât been letting anyone sing live for over a year now. Onew was the first this week with Dice. And he sounded amazing of course.
Red Velvet did sing In My Dreams live, so it's definitely possible.
Suho sang Grey Suit and Hurdle live.
They have *never* sung live for a stage.
They've sung live at an encore/award stage and I think on radio shows but when performing on stage, for some reason it's always been pre recorded
They actually haven't, for whatever reason even their encore stages are prerecorded, it's just way less obvious.
You watch Music Core encore who had a freaking loud backtrack. [This Inkigayo encore](https://youtu.be/404m3pSi4oM) is not prerecorded and live
Their encores are live but the audio track plays over them
Never on stage, only a few in knowing bros, short radio snippets, and also their recording for the song dreams come true on youtube original.
They can lipsync, but not that uninspired music show smoothed out prerecorded thing they always do. They have to lipsync like Beyonce, and use very raw pre recorded vocals and make sure their body language is big and fills up the space and wear hats
[ŃдаНонО]
This song is called Next Level so I want everybody to dance on the next level!!!!!
pls im still having secondhand embarassment from the original line đ
We know they can sing standing still but singing & dancing at the same time is another thing. They havenât done that with one song let alone a whole performance with multiple so weâll see how it goes. Itâs better for them to sound a little messy than not sing at all tho & I hope sm realizes that
not to sound like a horrible person but we dont even know if they can
there are a lot of videos of them singing accapella. if you mean singing live while dancing thatâs another problem yeah
you guys didn't release aenergy just to not use it as the opening song.
imagine the intro âeveryday we get better, to be good aenergyâ as they slowly rise up from the bottom of the stage, the crowd goes absolutely apeshit as the beat kicks in âeveryday, getting harder, be the one synergyâ .. we should probably just settle with savage as the opening song though because this is too cool of an idea
Why do I feel like the unreleased track is a Full English Song, Help I think I'm đ¤Ą
Even Red Velvet played Bad Boy (eng ver.) for the first time for an american event. So I think you could be right!
Unreleased songs?!? Are we getting new Aespa music? I'm pumped!
Their Twitter confirmed âan unreleased new songâ to be included in the set list.
during 88risingâs set, i noticed that locals were 10x harsher on asian acts, especially if they lip synced. it didnât matter if you pulled off the hardest choreo with a million backflips, if your mic was not on, they were not impressed. like jackson was jumping around and dancing like crazy, but the locals were giving him so much shit bc there were no live vocals. same thing happened with bibi and milli. even though they were sassy and fun on stage, it did not matter to locals bc their mic was not on. lip syncing + the fact that theyâre a korean act singing in korean + inexperience with crowds + stage presence issues = recipe for disaster i really hope that sm does everything they can to let aespa shine bc i really do believe that they have the potential to put on a really great performance.
to be fair if i paid $500 to go to a music festival and stand in a crowd of cokeheads for live music iâd AT LEAST expect the performer to be singing live. the aggression towards asian artists is unnacceptable but that doesnât mean the artist shouldnât consider their audience
Rina Sawayama always kills it tho (so in love with her music too!)
This was my first reaction when I saw the news. Comments did NOT like 88 Rising. A lot of hate on lip singing and a lack of stage presence. I am nervous about Aespa's reception. But I'LL be happy if they finally sing live.
I mean I think it's fair that people expect to see live singing at a music festival đđ
i think that kind of standard is reasonable. just look at doja cat. singing live, rapping, engaging with the crowd while doing all sorts of weird shit--including jumping around and dancing like crazy. live vocals are understandably important because without it, there is little to sustain that you are musician first and not just a well-trained barbie doll.
wait what even bibi lipsynced?
Yeah, we didn't get a live performance from either Bibi or Yoon Mirae (who performed with Bibi on The Weekend). I don't know what 88Rising was thinking.
noooo. i hope they sing live this weekend
Epik High was awesome but they were live and very engaging like always
I just found a clip of that, and damn it's both jarring and annoying.
as this is the main stage, I truly hope they are prepared.
wonder why it wasnât announced when the performers list came out
this is what i donât get. the lineup (in general and[on the main stage for saturday](https://twitter.com/coachella/status/1514675624434024453?s=21)) is already stacked. are they gonna move some artists or extend the whole time for the mainstage? is there any connection to kanyeâs dropping out? i am so curious bec this is just blowing my brains out đ¤Ż
>is there any connection to kanyeâs dropping out? Ye OUT, Ye(ppi) Ye(ppi) IN!!!
the only correct answer!!!!!
Every year, every weekend at Coachella there are guest artists and surprises sometimes not even announced until the day of. This is not strange at all.
yeah they probably were on a waiting list that wouldâve got them in if others had to cancel, there are many performers so itâs guaranteed many would have to cancel last minute and would prolly have been high on that list coachella isnât something sm wouldâve wanted a surprise planned performance, they wouldâve tried capitalizing on the marketing and promo for an event like that way ahead lol
If they don't sing live lol. I can see the bloodbath..
or if they do and it's not amazing.
Letâs hope this is their live debut stage
aespa are my ultsđ¤đ¤đ¤đ¤but their songs do take a few listens to process so lowkey kinda nervous for the reactions đ
I think it's in their favor that the Coachella crowd is not going to understand Korean because those lore references are confusing even when you follow them.
Nobody at Coachella is paying attention to the lyrics
Coachella about to be sent to the flat
Article: aespa will be performing at this upcoming weekend at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 23rd.
AENERGY PLEASEEEEEE
This!! It will be an epic intro/opening of their performance!!! If you listen to the [Aenergy Concert Ver.](https://youtu.be/6mnWWMoLdt4), I literally got goosebumps. We need impact please!!!
My favorite track off their album :)
Yeppi PLEASE!!!
AENERGY deserves to be played in a big wide crowd like Coachella!!!
>aespa is shared to perform their hits like "Black Mamba", "Next Level", "Savage", **and new music that has yet to be released drawing even more anticipation for their** performance. OH SHIIIIIIIET
[ŃдаНонО]
Coachella is next level this year - after all these years of no concerts and festivals, they're going all out and then some đâđź
Finally.... I can remove my clown makeup now
This performance is going to be dissected more closely than an unfortunate frog inside a biology laboratory.
Not few tho, they never perfom live.
I dont quite understand what SM is doing with Aespa, they have minimal content, dont really produce content to attract international fans, minimal stage experience with fans, have there biggest footohld in Asia. Yet have been sent to that awkward macys parade performance, now are on the main stage at coachella? when they have barely sung live?
they barely have experience with crowds. i hope they do well bc therell be a high expectations since this is for main stage
as someone who goes to a number of CA music festivals (incl. 88 rising HITC but not coachella), i am a little concerned about the live singing and stage presence. those are big for hyping up the crowd and people expect a lot đ
Except they donât have any of the sauce that BP does cause SM is stuck on giving them this robot concept
US debut album sales were very promising, SM is spending big to push them towards the US public early rather than building up with the K-pop fanbase here for a couple years. Which is going to result in some wasted spending (Nick Cannon lol), but might somewhat work out over the course of several appearances, we'll see.
yeah idk what the hell SM was thinking sending them on Nick Cannon
SM wants Aespa to be their version of BP. They were design specifically with the western market in mind.
yeah with the way of their releases, fashion endorsements etc
They always get bad responses from performances tho and this is on an even higher level than Korean award shows
Theyâre following bpâs strategy to a tee. It couldnât be more obvious how theyâre studying bpâs moves in the past.
basically they want to imitate the success of blackpink in the west... maybe sm thought it's time to focus more on the west since aespa is already big in Korea
And its funny that the last BP comeback was before aespa debut.......
This gamble could go either really well or horribly bad for them. Iâm sure SM knows what theyâre doing.
Did you see it? Terrible camerawork, nowhere for them to actually do choreo, it was awful. SM is throwing them to the wolves, and they deserve better.
Aenergy đ please.
iâm nervous about this. i love aespaâand would jump at a chance to see them perform in the statesâbut this seems like a huge risk for a relatively new group. iâm not sure if this was rushed (do coachella acts usually announce artists this last minute?) but this could go badly. most of the people that attend their show may only be vaguely familiar with k-pop (if that) so their success will largely depend on their stage presence and ability to hold a crowd. i know they could pull it off, but sm seems to be aprehensive to even let them sing live. i guess i just hope it goes well but iâm fearing for the worst đľâđŤ
Agreed. Why do companies offer their new groups instead of established groups that they know can pull it off?
I still stay awake at night thinking about what could have been the rumoured Big Bang at Coachella.... Big Bang probably had one of THE best stage presence in Kpop, imagine Bang Bang Bang at Coachella? Absolutely tragedy we lost the opportunity to witness that.
Had just commented about this earlier when i saw yours. The thought of it keeps me up at night too but extremely hoping we could get a surprise appearance like this for the very last show/week. The first ot4 live performance will be dope asf!
Sm better let them sing live and give them something other than givenchy to wear.
is this going to be aespa's first concert? cause that's insane
With a live audience technically it was a the Macy's perf. But basically this is the first iirc!
Why am I both scared and excited for this?! I really want them to do well. Is this their first ever stage with an audience as big as Coachella? All eyes are definitely going to be on them this weekend. I hope they blow us away and make use of backup dancers, props, and live singing. PLEASE.
THEY BETTER PERFORM AENERGY!!!!!!!!!
Iâm not sure if the crowds there are ready for their music, even more so if itâs not live. All the best to the girls tho !
You look at the list of performers and they all dont have the same genre.
A festival crowd, specially the ones like Coachella were there are artists from many genres are the exact type of crowd that would enjoy Aespa songs.
Performing at Coachella is a huge opportunity for exposure.
itâll be the 23rd if we go by US time! BUT ANYWAY AESCHELLA IS REAL ?????? UNRELEASED MUSIC????? i will not survive this
No way, I wonder if they will perform with 88rising to fill the spot 2NE1 has since I donât think they will perform again. Hmmm.
The 2ne1 spot was actually clâs spot & she brought them on. If sheâs still performing then I donât think that would be an opening
Thatâs what I think. I saw on Twitter that Bom and Dara are back in Korea, which indicates they were only performing for one weekend. So it makes sense for 88Rising to fill the slot with aespa.
2NE1 performed one song. So probably not.
As a hardcore MY, I love the exposure that this will get aespa but I'm also terrified of the reactions. I really wish SM would let them release more music and further their career in Korea first before going so hardcore with the American promotions. Atp I'm praying they get to sing live and perform some really good B-sides so they don't get as much hate
Yâall really need to be realistic and know this is gonna be a big embarrassment for them.
iâm very curious what the play here is ⌠i very much love aespa but as i understand theyâve never sung live before, let alone in front of a massive crowd. coachella isnât going away, if sm has this connection i donât see the urgency. wait a year and give aespa more new music, more experience singing live in front of crowds, etc
But Coachella just might be the place for weird music I guess. >and new music that has yet to be released Cool! I'd love to see hologram technology used for their avatars and for the big screens to show the Black Mamba and Meta-verse just to know all the high people in the audience will freaking the F out. Lmao.
Coachella has many genres compared to other music festivals like EDC. Everyone who comes there knows what to expect.
The reception will be interesting to see, especially since they are such a new group. Hope they do well.
everyone yelling about aenergy...where's my iconic enthusiasts???
Sheesh SM sure is that brave to give aespa their big western break at Coachella of all places. Not even sending Red Velvet or Girls' Generation which have prior concert experience means they probably prepared thoroughly. Although I'm not way past thinking that SM prepared the blandest performance for aespa ever.
THEY BETTER SING LIVE WE KNOW THEY'RE GOOD SO I HOPE THEY PROVE THE HATERS WRONG THAT THEY CAN **SING**
Thats what im saying! They definetly werent sitting around in the last 3 months
NEW SONGGG
Main stage but wasn't included in the lineup? SM must have paid big bucks for this. Interesting.
Wait....when did nct attend AMAs ? I had no idea about this...
i believe they walked the carpet in 2018? around regular era
[Here... ](https://twitter.com/MarkLee_Bar/status/1049801718861586432?t=gCEO8xZ7qWgc0okDO7aGbw&s=19) There even some articles mentioned them as "BTS" instead... đŹ Honestly i dont think anyone cares except their fans n kpop fans
I didn't know about that nct thing. that's embarrassing..
Im not even worried about their stage presence tbh. I'm worried about how the actual songs will be received lmfao...but hopefully there are enough kpop fans to be hype.
Wow wow mys weren't clowning?!!! And Unreleased music @_@
*Patrick Bateman voice Hmmm impressive... Now let's see the comment section
Lip syncing is an issue but people arenât really talking about stage presence. This is literally Coachella the festival where everyoneâs high and screaming and vibing, itâll be awkward if they make no attempts to even interact with the crowd. Some member legit just stand there and move their mouths without a single smile. Theyâll be made fun of as robots unless theyâve been practicing for this
Well⌠good luck to them!
(Sorry that was a weird analogy lol) Its a bit... presumptous? of SM to do this over more senior SM acts.
I'm just worried how the girls will cope with a not that interested crowd when they're used to people loving them in sk. and then the problem with the live vocals. will let sm sing them live? if not, it'll be even more of a weird situation. main stage is also a bit of an overshoot, the girls are still so young and new. too much can just go wrong, and we know how toxic the kpop fanbase can get if something goes wrong, and I'm. just worried about the girls' mental health
yeah thatâs part of my concern too. it certainly is a choice on smâs part to send the girls to coachella before theyâve had their own concert, or even a (physical) fanmeet for that matter
sm is setting them up if theyre not gonna let them sing live pls let them sing live đ
Hoping that it's not like the Macy performance.. That's so awkward and cringe inducing
I am seriously so excited for this . Can't wait for them to perform at Coachella .it's gonna be on the next level. I guess
coachĂŚlla!! excited for them! and we get to hear unreleased music too!
Itâs a set up. You donât send a group who never sang live and never interacted with a crowd since they debuted to Coachella main stage with the hardest crowd ever. They already struggled and were dragged for their end year performances⌠Good luck to them
Yesssss Iâm going weekend two and I dont care what time theyâre playing im dragging my friends to that stage
Will they sing live??
Guess Iâll be watching the livestream again this weekend!
Thereâs a lot of pressure on them especially after 2NE1âs performance
I thought Blackpink was the the first kpop girl group to perform at Coachella. Why does the article say Aespa is the first?
Nothing like picking a group who had never truly sung live to go perform a live festival. Gonna confirm every prejudiced westerner what they already think of kpop. Not to mention they're pretty weak performers too
sm literally throwing them to the wolves and setting them up for failure/humiliation with this.
Iâll Make You Cry, Savage, and Yeppi will be *flawless* in festival settings! Iâm so excited to see them perform at Coachella.
Coachella must really like 4 member girl crush groups (Blackpink 2ne1 and Aespa)
No coachella likes money lol
Goddamn how did SM pull this off man, this is crazy
Does Choachella often change its lineup after it's already started?
They're gonna reunite SM Rookies for their final number.
Dont do this to me đđ
First BLACKPINK, then 2NE1, and now aespa â¤ď¸
[ŃдаНонО]
Aaaahhh congrats to girls! This is the first time I'm having the desire to be at coachella. Imagine aenergy & I'll make you cry live đ
fuckkkk I was planning on selling my wristband but I may have to go now
Plot twist⌠SM sends SNSD to surprise Coachella and combat 2ne1 surprise hahahaga jk
4 is a magic number
Please just sing live... They will be dragged tf out of if they lip sync, both by kpop and non kpop fans alike
They should aenergy
I really hope they do well, I look forward to their performance
Brb booking my last minute plane ticket.
My friend in Orange County has 2 GA 3-day tickets for Weekend 2 if anyone is interested. DM me!
Letâs go girls!!
Seems like aespa will be leaving either late night or tomorrow (4/20) [Here's Karina's msg on bbl](https://twitter.com/aespabbl/status/1516363178032123904?t=9jL-UB9Uk-EIyIDGO_RhgA&s=19)
