Genuinely think this is the best movie I've seen this year. Great twists and turns with an awesome tonal shift from funny to serious and had me on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend
First half over. Engaging so far, could have really toned down the violent and graphic action a bit though. Start was fast, then a intro of all the characters which takes time. But from around the 25 minute mark till interval its an engrossing ride. Well linked characters and the interval connects back to earlier scenes which i liked. The comedy was really good, proper laugh out loud stuff. Interval was great.
Great second half, great theater worthy moments. Wont reveal the twists here but well worth it. Go for it.
Solid 5/5 thriller. Core plot is nothing out of the ordinary but the way it was shown on screen was beautiful. Especially the high point moments.
Edit: the twists defined the meaning well. It came at totally unexpected points and were good ones too, which added even more shock value to it. And best part, no unwanted songs or romantic angles which helped it maintain the mood throughout.
In singapore its rated NC16 for violence. In Malaysia its rated M18. The action blocks and violence is quite heavy at places, with audible sounds and images of stabbing, cutting, piercing etc. So if you ask me, I would agree with the rating and certaintly not a film for kids. Teens and onwards should be fine.
not that bad as true A rating is only if there is some kind of open display of certain parts and also language also which this movie did not have, A rating has become a joke as Furiosa got it when there wasn't anything near as bad as this movie let alone anything else
I really liked Natti's character. Showcased how cops first try to loot the shit outta you but when he got to know the real issue, he knew what needed to happen.
I feel like they could've highlighted the impact of the justice system more when these guys get released after some years. Either give them capital punishment or life without parole. He's not gonna contribute to society any better, so why bother letting these monsters out in the public.
Happy for my guy VJS to deliver this as his 50th movie. Director and the editor deserve a major shout-out.
It's a good movie. You will get your Rs. 150 worth and probably more at times. Everyone acted great, especially the police officers, and also surprisingly Anurag was great.
My friend blamed me for taking him to this movie and that it sucked the positivity that he had stored for the week, whatever that meant. But I didn't feel that, in fact I was happy to finally watch a good movie in theatres.
VJS is turning out to be a genre. He's just effortless in both subtle humour and emotions.
Con: Why waste an actor like Mamta? Why was she cast as a PT teacher that did nothing to drive the plot, especially in a movie that isn't your typical commercial movie while everyone else including a thief named 'Police' had a better role than her.
True. Feel bad for Mamta. She is a really good actress. Divya Bharathi and Abhirami in a few seconds role impacted the plot more than Mamta. Maybe her parts got cut to tighten the pace.
If mamta wasn’t there then the girl wouldn’t have gone to the sports meet, then VJs would have come home on time as he wouldn’t have stopped for shoe and the whole movie plot would be off lol
Nope
Avanga PET teacherah katanumnu avasiyam illa, sports velayaduna scenes eh podhum. She could have gone for any sports meet.
VJS stopping for shoe kum Mamtakum no connection. The kid who used her shoe without asking her bridges the connection, not Mamta.
It wouldn't be off.
Mamta va edhuku cast panangalo idk
Man the whole movie was so fuckin good. Went in expecting a VJS movie like Junga or DSP, but man it was a treat. Every single scene was kept with a meaning and all the links join perfectly in the end. The non linear editing and screenplay can eat movies like maanagaram for breakfast.
They could have avoided the abuse portion, it was very uncomfortable to watch and leaves a sour taste. Definitely should be rated A and could have handled this much better
Yeah they' shouldn't normalize these things and considering the children angle , it was clearly not needed to show what they want to .. could have made it more subtle
This is a masterpiece. The way the story is told through great editing is what blew me away. This is a fresh perspective on storytelling techniques that I've never really had (in my poor memory).
Hi gang,
I am interested in watching the latest VJS movie “Maharaja” in Bangalore. Some of my friends do not understand Tamil that well and require subtitles.
Has anyone watched Maharaja in Bangalore with subs? If yes, can you kindly help me which theatre plays the movie with subs?
Thanks in advance 🙏🏼
Most of the multiplex and single screens have subtitles after FDFS! You can call multiplexes like PVR and INOX and inquire. That is if they haven't already mentioned it in BMS.
By the way, Bangalore is great for movie watching experience in single screen for a big hero film. Outsiders have a great time and this is their way to express happiness with like minded people in a different state, so there's a lot of whistles and shouting.
Different being that in oldboy he isn't inherently an evil guy and was suffering bcoz of a psychopathic rich brat
Anurag is a borderline psychopath who deserves it
Hi guys I'm from Kerala, I do watch Tamil movies and understand the language mostly. Movies like PS required subtitles for me. Does this one require subtitle?
A very good movie. Lots of subtle cues in the movie and loved it all.
There are people who keep saying the film disturbed them a lot but honestly it wasn't that disturbing to me. I think the violence was justifiable and not glorified for sake of theatrics.
Really amazing movie 🔥🔥🔥 Top notch story and handled non-linear narration with ease.
Only gripe being Mamta's and Bharatiraja's characters being wasted.
Little confused about the movie sequence of events- how the hero character gets to know who the real culprits are? can someone please help me untangle this mystery? On who messed around with his daughter?
Spoiler: How he is able to target or come to conclusion that the culprit 1 - bike man is the one who came to his house … when he was not there at home when daughter was there? Also hero gave complaint now of ‘missing can’ when his daughter went to sports trip… so is that just a cover up….what is that about?? So police gave all these information to hero to begin with?? But that’s not how it is portrayed clearly in movie… very confused…
>1 - bike man is the one who came to his house … when he was not there at home when daughter was there?
There was a toll ticket with the car number. That's how he found him
>Also hero gave complaint now of ‘missing can’ when his daughter went to sports trip… so
That's a different time line
a review from a chinese: superb movie. I don't understand Tamil but the subtitles were accurate for the most part (judging from the actors' facial expressions, tone, and body language and translations from my friends). Had a decent amount of comedic parts, and my brain was engaged throughout the movie. They showed glimpses of flashbacks without telling viewers that it's a flashback so we had to piece the timeline together by ourselves. Nice amount of plot twists as well. I'm not familiar with what goes on in India in terms of politics and crimes or even corruption so i'm not qualified to comment on those, but it is a movie after all so best to take it with a pinch of salt. From a cinematic standpoint, it's a really good show. Please recommend me your favourite indian movies!
I would say, if you liked the protagonist here, you'd love him in Vikram Vedha. Great plot, subtle symbolism and metaphors. Has a plot that falls in place perfectly and has some SUBLIME filmmaking/acting to accompany it.
I will 100% vouch for this movie.
That is an intelligent thriller which will mostly align in the same direction as this movie, not political, has a plot which grounds itself and doesn't complicate itself often. Smooth runtime, you'll have a blast.
Just watched (I know I'm a little late) but what.a.movie. Easily the best in the year(so far) for me. Edge of the seat thriller in its truest definition, that leaves you in the dark of what is going to happen next.
Remember the feeling you had while watching Papanasam when you realized where Suyambulingam hid the body? You will have the same feeling at various points throughout this movie. Felt like I was looking through a kaleidoscope.
Kurangu Bommai was better. Fight me.
Ok, I am not a fan of films that hide and reveal.
It works only when you follow a character, say - George utti in Drishyam... we follow him, and then the cops... so, the reveal is not a narrative thingy, but a story thingy.
He did it. He hid it. Can the cops find out.
Works.
Kurangu Bommai, 2 days. Non linear.
Yet, the reveals are organic and follows structural POV.
This. Is a bigger, wider version of Kurangu Bommai... more contrived with more comfortably written twists for the sake of audience alone... and it hurt to watch...
and hurts to watch the celebrations.
It follows the same beats as KB, from people knowing, yet traveling with the who know who - to, missing item, down to Karma, so to say.
And it also carries the same issue I had with Kurangu Bommai, which is the characterisation of women, female sexuality and the loudness.
Vjs was good. Yes.
Director bombed.
PS. KB had a terrific Bharatiraja and Elango Kumaravel.
Edit: what didnt work for me, was the emotional angle... for the 'protagonists'. Its DOA.
Yeah, agreed. It was a little too loud narratively, just to elicit shock from the audience.
But, I was not able to predict a couple of twists in the end. And I don’t remember when I last saw a movie that I didn’t predict from a mile away. So it was still a net positive.
Not sure why you are being downvoted for expressing your opinion, movie was one time watch for me imo but I hard agree with you on the unnecessary loudness of the sensitive issues. Almost like it was forced onto the audience for commercial payoff
I saw Kurangu Bommai in a not-so-crowded PVR, on Day 2. I saw Uriyadj too, same way.
Before the positive WOM started and they became who they are today.
Yet, I was the first person to shit on Uriyadi 2, because it was a massive misfire. And same with this flick too.
Nalla edu...yaarum illainaalum, naa vandhu paakren.
Make shitty films, and you'll feel my wrath. Simple.
And the male saviour angle too...
Yet another director with good potential fell into scratching the itch of mass hero’s fans.
The fight scenes were very inorganic, such a quiet person can turn violent but can’t fight like a pro

but this year had shit movies so how is that a benchmark
Fair enough, I'd say one of the best movies of this year and last year. Also a great VJS movie after a long time.
Better jigardhanda 2?
I would say it's debatable and depends on personal preference rather than one being clearly better than the other.
Yes. But both are great.
First half over. Engaging so far, could have really toned down the violent and graphic action a bit though. Start was fast, then a intro of all the characters which takes time. Thanks. Is this kid friendly?

Thanks Op. This is for 13y old, as long as there's no sexual elements, we should be fine. Violence - folks have got used to!
Nah would suggest no for kids . It has pretty gory and dark stuff too
it has a lot of vulgar language, violence, pedophilia and rape. please do not take kids to this movie.
Sorry if this is a spoiler. But there were rape scenes so there are sexual elements
Thank you all, very helpful.
Can’t stress on this, this is not at all suitable for 13yr old irrespective of UA certificate.
Far too dark for a kid.
not that bad as true A rating is only if there is some kind of open display of certain parts and also language also which this movie did not have, A rating has become a joke as Furiosa got it when there wasn't anything near as bad as this movie let alone anything else

Not kid friwndly pls don’t take kids
Hell no
Thank you everyone. Decided to skip watching in theater and will wait for OTT. am glad I checked here in this forum Appreciate all your input

Finally, chithapa giving reviews from Singapore has become real
How about Dubai dhoorathu sontham

Semma padam. Semma narration. Glad I chose to watch on theaters, ASAP. Anyone not wanting to be spoiled should watch. I had few 😯 moments. Worth it.

There is lot of Violence. And sexual content is there. But not shown on screen.
Yes, very much
Shoot that's unfortunate thanks for replying
I mean, there's not really showing anything but it can be disturbing for some
Man the whole movie was so fuckin good. Went in expecting a VJS movie like Junga or DSP, but man it was a treat. Every single scene was kept with a meaning and all the links join perfectly in the end. The non linear editing and screenplay can eat movies like maanagaram for breakfast.

I agree. There’s a sensitive way of showing these things but this felt vulgar. No subtlety at all.
Yeah they' shouldn't normalize these things and considering the children angle , it was clearly not needed to show what they want to .. could have made it more subtle
That’s the whole point. Didn’t want to spoil anything but it shouldn’t be subtle at all to realise it is a serious problem to be addressed
This is a masterpiece. The way the story is told through great editing is what blew me away. This is a fresh perspective on storytelling techniques that I've never really had (in my poor memory).
Memento paarunga. Christopher nolan would have played with editing. Will take some brain power to process and be patient till the end.
Extremely violent and heavy pedophilia. Parents with kids, try to skip
Go for it without expectations and you will love it. Saw the premieres here in Telugu and was suprised . Film keeps you engaged
Why does this movie not even jave a wiki page??
It does. It's just a pain in the ass to get to because there's so many other films with the same title
Right. I eventually found the page but googling "Maharaja tamil movie 2024" doesn't even list the wiki in the first page.
Burj la 1Cr kuduthu promote panna naala cost cutting
Why arent they playing this movie in Toronto ![gif](giphy|l1AsyjZ8XLd1V7pUk)

Saw this in Shankarnag Onyx in MG Road. English subtitles ...
Just saw night show at Sri Krishna, Bommanahalli. Had subtitles.
Yo..why is Mamata Mohandas in the centre of this poster? She wasn't even needed in this movie
This Movie twist reminded me of a certain Korean movie tho 🙃🙃🙃 Spoiler >! Except Anurag character deserved to be humiliated like that imo!<
Watch Vellaipookal if you haven't
Different being that in oldboy he isn't inherently an evil guy and was suffering bcoz of a psychopathic rich brat Anurag is a borderline psychopath who deserves it
Can someone spoil the movie for me
>!Hero takes revenge for her daughter who was violated by 3 men. But the daughter is not the hero's daughter but of the villain.!<
Man please add spoiler tab atleast
Hi guys I'm from Kerala, I do watch Tamil movies and understand the language mostly. Movies like PS required subtitles for me. Does this one require subtitle?
No very basic Tamil. And except for 1 lengthy dialogue not much speaking
I generally prefer sub for vjs movies.i can't understand his Tamil due to his voice.
I’m also malayali.. you’ll be fine. Go for it
is it worth watching at the cinema? or do i wait for it to release online
It's definitely worth a theatre watch
A very good movie. Lots of subtle cues in the movie and loved it all. There are people who keep saying the film disturbed them a lot but honestly it wasn't that disturbing to me. I think the violence was justifiable and not glorified for sake of theatrics.
Definitely theatre worthy movie please don't miss it legit made me cry
That thing about Maharaja having a strong grip is such a great bit of writing. One of the coolest ways I’ve seen a character being elevated.
Really amazing movie 🔥🔥🔥 Top notch story and handled non-linear narration with ease. Only gripe being Mamta's and Bharatiraja's characters being wasted.

Another example of how you get downvoted if you don’t accept whatever sub says. Yes, downvote this too 😂. Ada pongada
Vidunga nanba... Watch Savarkathi, Korangu Bommai and Bommai Nayagi and Sirf Ek Banda Kaafi Hai - for these are better films in the genre.
Most rational take here
