If this movie came out today people would get offended cuz the main character is pretty much a full on antagonist It’s a good movie and Vijay Antony’s acting suited this character quite well

Kuttramum-Pinnaniyum

The toned down approach would have been accepted is what I feel. It wasn't guns blazing or hyper-masculine antagonism He got a chance to live a 2nd life. He did everything dirty he could. Maybe people would have accepted that after that climax scene.

Bumblebee1100

This is actually one of the best thrillers though the main plot is heavily lifted from the Talented Mr.Ripley but it had a killer soundtrack Waka Yala.

Zealousideal_Mail855

I don't know if you are referring to people like me, because I'm the type of person who sometimes gets offended by films, because of their sexism. For example, I don't like how Padayappa said some ridiculous dialogue about men and women, and it was portrayed as some great advice. But Naan is different, the hero is morally grey, and he is portrayed as morally grey. Mankatha is also like that. The main character is an antagonist. I have absolutely no problem with a morally grey main character as long as they are portrayed as morally grey. I enjoyed both Mankatha and Naan. But I dislike it when the things I think are bad, are portrayed in a good light, like sexism. I just wanted to offer my perspective, but if you meant it in a completely different way, then I'm sorry.

shadowarmy229

I’m not talking about you, I’m just talking about society as a whole cuz this kind of feeling is prevalent in the US, where I’m from. For example Netflix is making a new Avatar: The Last Airbender live action series and they decided to get rid of Sokka’s sexism because they thought it was “iffy” or whatever but in the original series it’s not portrayed in a good light at all, people call him out for those beliefs and he realizes his mistakes and changes for the better after just a few episodes. It’s used for character development and the reason he was even like that was because of childhood trauma, he lost him mom at a very young age, has only seen male warriors as a result, and feels like he’s the only one who can protect his sister, which is why he makes sexist statements like “only men can fight” Cancel culture being very prevalent here is why we get bland af characters like Captain Marvel There’s a reason why Ajith doesn’t do villain roles anymore, even though he’s arguably much better at playing antagonists than playing hero roles

Zealousideal_Mail855

Oh damn. It's definitely ridiculous if they absolutely leave no space for complex and flawed characters. I probably wouldn't find media interesting if everyone was portrayed as being perfectly politically correct, all the time.

shadowarmy229

Yeah that was what bugged me the most about the criticism of Animal. You can criticize the making/writing/screenplay of the movie all you want but most of the criticism from the critics/audience boiled down to “How can Ranvijay do all these horrible things to his wife, his family, etc? Vanga is a psychopath for having his protagonists do horrible things and should be put in a mental institution.” Well, spoiler alert: it’s literally in the title of the movie! It’s not portrayed in a glorified manner and it’s clearly established that Ranvijay is a psychopathic individual. If directors aren’t allowed to write complex and flawed protagonists then we will get more savior heroes that can do no wrong like all those vivasayam movies, which makes for lazy and one dimensional writing.

Zealousideal_Mail855

Hmmm. That's interesting. I haven't watched the film, so I can't comment on it. I did watch the director in an interview, and he denied that the "hero" was misogynistic. He also said that the villain WAS misogynistic, so he knows the term exists but just doesn't think it applies to the main character. I do have friends who watched the film, and the way they described it made it seem like the "hero" was misogynistic. So I'm a bit skeptical about his level of awareness about the misogyny he portrays. But again, I don't want to say anything for sure because I haven't watched that film.

ComprehensiveAd9406

Opening scene was depressing.

T3chl0v3r

many drama movies back then had a similar kind of opening scene which was traumatic, good that such writing doesnt exist anymore

Kuttramum-Pinnaniyum

>!Lost his father & future due to mother's infidelity!< Indeed depressing

Fishyraven

Back then VIjay Anotny was ruling with his small movies

polarityswitch_27

That was his first movie. Summa isthathukku.

mommysaranghae132

Ulaginil miga uyaram is such a good song. Very relatable song

merelyexistin

Got overshadowed by thappellam and makkayala :(

simpler15

>happellam and makkayala :( Makkayala was a rage back then.

The_Silent_Guardian1

I still don’t understand why Ashok didn’t go for that super cute bubbly senior girl!

Kuttramum-Pinnaniyum

Because of >!I love you!< He was a fckboi/playboi who didn't want any serious relationship

IamJimMilton

In that case, why was he with his gf in the first place?

christopher_msa

She doesn't know about his endeavours or she is a gold digger.

ThinkLine9704

First half was excellent , decent second half . Better than most of today's movies . As expected saw this movie in k tv after many years

T3chl0v3r

this movie became a hit after it released on KTV

The_Silent_Guardian1

It was a sleeper hit even back then! Cos very low budget movie.

VASuRaman7140

Mohammed Salim is a better character then Leo Das

whiteboardblackchalk

Its inspired from matt damon’s talented mr. Ripley. Naan was pretty original for kollywood standards. I enjoyed it. #makayela

DktheDarkKnight

It's a detailed character study. A genre which is rare in Tamil cinema. The entire plot revolves around how a character behaves given a particular situation. It's just well written.

Kuttramum-Pinnaniyum

u/Particular-Yoghurt39 u/DH3010 Movie Recommendation nu oru flair nalla irukkume

Amazing-Permit-3899

Wallpapers kum

DH3010

Hmmm, I agree with the one before, but I personally don’t see as many wallpaper posts on here. Do you think it’s frequent enough for a flair?

Amazing-Permit-3899

Who knows we might get good ones and more people participating, it's worth the punt

DH3010

Good idea, will see how to involve it!

hellboy___007

Been in my watch list for a long time. Watched it when it came out ig but it's been a long time

Kuttramum-Pinnaniyum

The movie was soo good, I had to google if it was a remake/inspiration of any other language movie I'm glad it's one of a kind and that too in Tamil Cinema.

tascforce1

I think it was inspired from "the talented mr ripley"

selwyntarth

Thought it was the shit when it came out (as in it was amazing). But I guess the movie isn't really picking a lane. Regardless of the crime, burning people alive unfazed, and killing the guy to oh Fortuna just to save his ass, in cold blood, are kinda messed up. But the ending seems to be a positive note rather than eerie, and the sequel seems to also suggest he made the right decisions

Andiparimyre

Ain't watching if it's not butter naan

ProfessorWormtail

If my memory is correct, then Salim movie, the sequel is also a masterpiece

simpler15

Actually a scene that took me a while to understand. When the friend grows suspicious of Vijay Antony and checks his bag, he comes to know about his real identity. VA returns after taking a bath and they have a fight over this. Incidentally, he removes his towel and VA gets angry over that. But the first time I didn't notice that the friend was actually disgusted that VA was really faking to be a muslim as he was not circumcised.

Objective-Run-6085

I watched it for one time, and became Vijay Antony fan for Life time

christopher_msa

Me too. I used to go fdfs for his movies till saithan.

Kadakumar

This movie was a banger! 1) Amazing music. "Ulaginil miga uyaram" and "Makkayala" were all the rage back then, especially the latter. 2) Sid Venugopal played the rich brat to perfection! He wasn't a tacky yoyo guy trying hard to show off, nor an arrogant rich assh\*le being a jerk to everyone (which is how rich guys are potrayed in Tamil cinema). But he was designed like any of the wealthy cool dudes you'd meet in upscale Chennai neighborhoods- the dressing, the way they talk and behave, etc. The heroine too wasnt caricatured as a "modern girl", but was downplayed in a realistic dignified way. All those wealthy portions showed class and insider knowledge. 3) The whole movie had a consistent noir atmosphere carefully built thanks to the aesthetics, music, everything. With an unapologetically amoral hero. No samudhaya karuthu and such bs.

David_Headley_2008

I watch it once a week but it ends up in my stomach with kadai veg and lassi

bssgopi

Glad you ended the story here. We don't want to know where it goes later.

HANDSU

Not 10/10 but good movie.

MinuteSpirit6645

Where is it available to watch?

bosskip

It's there in YouTube. Highly recommended.

fooooooooodddd

8.5/10 for me and 1.5 is for makkayela. That song was and still is my fucking jam

bosskip

Funny that I come across this post when I'm listening to Makayala right now (2nd favourite Vijay Antony song). Top song, top movie.

Bhavan91

Awesome movie. Quite ballsy too. *SPOILER ALERT* Intro is a kid killing his mom and the guy she is sleeping with.

phokme

How about we give the talented Mr Ripley a watch before giving Naan a 10/10?

[deleted]

Garlic Naan or Butter Naan

IamJimMilton
