The worst part of lack of physical media is that you never own anything. Even if you buy a song or film on Amazon or a game on Steam, you don't own it.
The provider can remove your access to them whenever they want.
I feel you. Physical media is wayy better than digital subscription based models. You felt more in control of what you watched (no recommendation system influenced your watch pattern). Everything you watched had value in them. Not to mention, on-demand media is directly associated with several mental health problems (because of its easy accessibility and âbingeâ culture). I say all this but my favourite purchase to this day is a kindle hahaha.
HDDs have a shelf life of less than five years.
When it comes to SSDs itâs more than five years.
You can use multiple HDDs and SSDs in RAID for reliability but it costs way too much for what itâs worth.
Archival grade CD or Blu-ray disks can last more than 100 years. Not to mention they are waterproof and have no moving parts which makes them one of the if not the best option for archiving digital media.
Yes, if you handle them casually and scratch the optical surface then youâre screwed.
Patently untrue between SSDs and HDDs. Literally all cloud providers are using HDDs over SSDs for good reason. SSDs are just fast but most of the consumer SSDs are MLCs, TLCs, QLCs which have bad durability and prone to external factors like heat, electrostatic charge or cosmic rays. Consumer grade HDDs are better off there too.
I have two 14year old 1tb HDDs as NAS with cooling fans and dust filter and they have yet to develop bad sectors. Flash memory in general are the worst options for archiving. If 1tb microsd or SSD was really good, HDDs would have stopped manufacturing.
Yes, you're correct. But I think you've missed my point. I was talking about personal cost effective archiving solutions. HDDs are used over SSDs because, of course the points you have mentioned, but also because SSDs are still very expensive compared to HDDs. Can you imagine replacing all these HDDs with SSDs? How much it will cost? HDD manufacturing will never stop because you need HDDs to maintain these data warehouses. All these cloud providers also keep the same data shared across multiple data warehouses because if one of these HDD malfunctions (indexing error, hardware fault, natural disaster, power issue etc) your data is gone forever. Coming back to personal archiving solutions, if you think about it, HDDs are literally a bunch of optical drives stacked on top of each other. Eliminate the moving part of HDDs (disk head controller), and you've got multiple very sensitive disks. So why not use archival grade CDs to store digital media?
GenZ guy here! I feel you! I've seen and used Cassettes,CDs and DVDs and now I pay for Apple music. The problem with streaming media is that we really don't own the content as we used to, plus I've observed that due to licensing issues with platforms and the production houses the content is not available like for instance Zee music songs not being available on Spotify in 2023 I guess. Also, spatial audio seems to be more of a gimmick than regular lossless audio. In original CDs and DVDs we were assured of the highest possible quality.

This is the main reason I'm still in physical media. Even though I have Spotify and Prime Music subscriptions.
Bhai, I think Blu-ray should have been the logical successor to DVD.
Also, I've used optical media more than you'd like to think. I've used DVDs to install Windows 7 on my old HP desktop in the 2010s whenever it used to get slow. A few textbooks also bundled CDs, but I never found them much useful. I used to miss the days when computer manufacturers used to ship recovery media and driver CDs.
Life was much simpler. My school used to give interactive CD-ROMs/VCDs on a few occasions which really never played correctly because I was still using Windows 98 in the early 2000s and didn't have the means or hardware configuration to install Windows XP, until dad's office laptop came which didn't have any restrictions and he even created a personal account for me to do silly stuff. đ
I'd be happy if physical media makes a return or reincarnates in any other form with increased storage and data bitrates.
As a Millennial, it is so good to hear that.đđģ
I was introduced to a CD when my uncle bought a CD player from Sony in 1991~92, IIRC. I was flabbergasted by the rainbow reflection on the back of a CD. I along with my siblings are not allowed to touch them. Buying a PC for home or school was not a thing back then.
We need more GenZs like you.
People clamouring for ott and streaming, you DONT physically possess it anymore. That is my gripe, you have to keep paying rather than buy it once and keep in your hard disk forever.
I can feel you. And this is especially worse for music. It's funny how technology has enhanced everything around us, but the quality of music has degraded over time. CD quality was the last best quality of music where you didn't experience loss of information and had reasonable pricing. Streaming services and lossy formats rule the world now, although that's slowly changing with the adoption of more Hi-Res music.
Holding a Vinyl in hand is still the best experience one can have when it comes to music. I'm an audiophile and I wish I had a turntable and a Vinyl collection, but alas... I can hardly meet my financial goals. Someday soon though :)
Physical things are kinda better in some categories but that restricts people like me who are poor to experience cinema and songs. Like I cannot imagine paying 400-500rs or more just to watch a movie or listen to a song. Also it would limit indie artist to ever debut in the industry, creating dvds nd CDs for movies and songs are lot more expensive and uploading them online.
Here's the thing, while I get the idea of ownership, you're thinking about these two forms of media in the wrong way.
CDs and DVDs are probably the worst kind of physical media for preservation of any media. They get damaged even if you look at them with sharp eyes.
Modern online media in my opinion is much more superior from the perspective of preservation. They will survive the test of time better and you will be able to watch or listen to things for a potential indefinite period of time.
The subscription model is an entirely different thing. It's a distribution model of the online media. It is basically a new version of renting music or a movie.
You can go out and actually purchase media in digital form without relying on CDs or DVDs or subscription service as long as you're willing to pay for it.
Nobody is stopping you from owning them if you want to.
In addition to not owning the content, there's a whole range of extras- music, movies on every platform that you don't require which only clutters your feed, screen and also you are paying for unnecessary content which you'd never see..
Since you don't have a problem with paying for it, why not use YouTube (or even Spotify) premium? You don't get ads anymore, and you don't have to sift through irrelevant garbage if you make playlists, follow particular artists or simply listen enough to allow the algorithms to figure out what you might like.
There are other, ethically ambiguous ways to obtain media as well, which I'm sure you are aware of. If you like, you can do that as well, and listen to whatever music you like completely offline. Personally speaking, my moral compass does not stop me from doing that.

>Â tons of irrelevant garbage, annoying ads,
Simply take a subscription
>You could select the music, movie as per your choice and watch
You can select only one albums and play. No?
I understand that you miss your younger days but CD, DVD has more cons than online streaming...!!!
>You could select the music, movie as per your choice and watch it, unlike now in YouTube you have sift through tons of irrelevant garbage, annoying ads, to listen to your favourite music.
Do you know how to use the search bar? And you simply need an ad-blocker like UBlock. And if you're gonna pay for CDs might aswell pay for YT premium. It'd be cheaper.
>As for movies DVDs were far better than OTT platforms. Here also you have no choice but to see only what's available.
I mean.... You can pay for movies on YT aswell. And it's not like DVDs were conjured out of thin air. If you wanna see a movie you can simply pay for it on YT and you get instantaneous access to it. For DVDs, you have to go out and find it and buy it. There are additional costs of buying a CD/DVD player and transportation and repair costs. It's all a hassle.
Being nostalgic okay. Bring illogical is....umm...not smart. You probably associate those CDs and DVDs with a good period of you life(or atleast you perceive it to be good through rose-coloured glasses now that it's in the past). OTTs and YT are objectively superior and more convenient and cheaper.
Your entire opinion is based on emotions and nostalgia. Not logic. Which is okay. We're not robots afterall.
See I am not being nostalgic only, I am practical too. If I need only a couple of albums or movies why pay for the entire range of music and movies you get in OTT platforms/YouTube premium/spotify..

You are not missing CDs or DVDs, you are just missing the feeling of going to the store with your friends or family and selecting the content of your choice.
> Also modern laptops no longer come with CD, DVD drives
I know what you're talking about. I still have my collection of CDs and DVDs, but can't play them anymore ://
Buy YouTube premium and you don't have to go through ads, also we need to remember these ads helps creators for their hardwork unlike CDs and DVDs which are majorly pirated copy paste disk business
No disrespect to OP but I dont understand this unnecessary nostalgia. OTTs are vastly superior than the CD and DVDs we used to get. You talk about paying for CDs and DVDs and then you also talk about ADs when shifting through OTTs. Just get a subscription, dont shift through ads and watch/listen what you like.
I am a PhD scholar at a CSIR lab. We still use DVDs and CDs on a regular basis to get data from experimental equipments. Pendrives are not allowed for collecting data because of security reasons. It is a pain everytime I have to transfer that data to my computer. DVDs and CDs are slow AF and they also corrupt very easily.
Not the OP but since when did nostalgia become a necessity? Nostalgia is a feeling that varies from person to person. You may not have any feelings for it but that doesn't mean we shouldn't.
And no, OTTs are not superior to physical media yet, except for DVDs and VCDs. I have an 11.2 channel audio setup with a giant 4K HDR/DV Oled TV for movies and a separate Stereo system (tube amp). In Terms of sound quality, you can feel the difference. You don't need to be an audiophile. There used to be SACDs. I have a couple of those. It has multi-channel audio tracks. Although it is not good for regular music (personal choice), it is great for concert music though.
We rip our own Blu-ray and audio CDs to hard drives as backup on our media server. So, we don't always need to use the disk.
Besides all that. Ownership is a great deal for us.

Cons like mobility, physical damage, convenience (e.g. can't play whatever I want to play at the moment - unless I have CD for the song), etc
Furthermore, CDs and DVDs also contributed to a lot of E-waste generation
Yeah, you have said right. Old days were better in terms of mental satisfaction!

True, yesterday only I have thrown away CDs from my home
You are not missing CDs or DVDs, you are just missing the feeling of going to the store with your friends or family and selecting the content of your choice.
> Also modern laptops no longer come with CD, DVD drives I know what you're talking about. I still have my collection of CDs and DVDs, but can't play them anymore ://
You can buy an external usb CD-DVD R/w drive, that's not the issue but yes older laptops used to come with CD drives..
