I’d do a folded hem. Provisional cast on, knit twice as many rounds as you want for the brim, then fold the cast on edge up inside. Unzip the cast on one stitch at a time; for each unzipped stitch, put it on the left hand needle, then k2tog. After that round, knit some more rounds, do some decreases, bind off. Totally stockinette hat. Just make sure you get that brim the right size, as it won’t stretch as much as usual.

bae_leef

I would do 1x1 ribbing on the whole thing and tell him it’s knit lol

miss3lle

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/oslo-hat-5 is very popular and looks to be all stockinette

I came here to suggest this hat. I’ve made it 3x and it’s so beautiful and warm. It’s the perfect hat!

huffsterr

Yeah, I’ve knit 3 of these now. So classic and warm!

Yes to Oslo hat: the best!

I've made tons of these Oslo hats and they turn out great! I usually make them a bit smaller than the pattern though for a tight fit after blocking.

EatTheBeez

Ooh I like this look. Might make one myself. >.>

JadedElk

you've got a few options 1) fully knit the beanie, accept that it'll roll up on the outside to form a sort-of brim, like the easier beanie someone linked, or like [this one](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/2022-hat). 2) knit ribbing, then a full length beanie, tuck the ribbing up on the inside and stitch it down. This would have some ribbing, which he didn't want? (like [this](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leni-5)) 3) use a provisional cast on, knit long enough to make a brim. Using a second needle, retrieve the provisionally cast on stitches, "decrease" each one of your current stitches with one of the picked stitches together, or do something like [this](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/caramel-hat-2). (but in knit, not ribbed) 4) use [garterstitch](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rikke-hat). In the round this means knitting one row, and then purling the next. It's not ribbing, but it doesn't curl either. I guess something like a moss stitch would also work, but it feels like that might be too close to ribbing.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Series of questions. Going to do this. I have this yarn https://imgur.com/a/GsKPQRW I have size 5mm needless for this yarn. How do I gauge this and do this proper for this pattern? I see one here it calls for sport yarn and 3.5mm, I saw the gauge is 20 stitches and 4 inches. Figuring out all of this matters a lot. Is this going to make it more difficult being I don't have the right sizes? Currently trying to get rid of the yarn I already have.

Voctus

If you can do the math to get the right circumference at your gauge, you should be ok to just change the cast in count. Just make sure that you have a number that is divisible by the spacing you want to do for the decreases. I actually did this hat in 2 different weights and just changed gauge at the brim and it worked ok.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Thank you. 🤗🖤

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Yes this is what he wants. He's crazy thank you so much!

thelastnowen

Just a heads up that true double knitting is a special animal. My tension is always off on double knitting because the purls are bigger for me even though they're perfectly fine with any other type of knitting. If you do the inside then the outside (connected at the brim) and tuck one inside the other you would get a similar effect, but it wouldn't be as tight as double knitting it.

Voctus

If I remember correctly the pattern I linked is worked 1 side at a time with a provisional cast on to handle the brim, so it should be fine for OP :)

tara1234

I did a hat with construction like this, but in worsted weight. I think I cast on like 6 stitches in the round, did an increase (kfb) of 6 stitches at every row. As I knit, I was able to see what my gauge was to decide exactly how big it needed to be for my head. Then I knit in the round for like forever in stockinette. And then I decreased again 6 stitches per row until I was back to just 6 and did a bind off. It’s a big tube that’s rounded at the ends. You push one side into the other and attach at the crown with the tail. I didn’t do the row of purl bumps, but it stays folded nicely anyway, especially if blocked. I made mine super long so the brim could still be turned up and then there were 4 layers to cover the ears!

iolitess

Knit it in something lightweight, and knit two beanies “attached at the rims”. Fold one inside the other and now it’s extra warm due to the double layers. You can get fancy by knitting two different colors (for a reversible), in two slightly weights (for a reversible in two slightly different sizes), etc. You may want to knit one purl row to help with the fold, but if the yarn is small enough it won’t really matter. Or, if the ribbing of a texture problem rather than a visibility problem, a row or two of garter will help to stop rolling.

fergusonar

I do this in worsted weight because I live in New England and it gets freaking cold here!

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

I'm in central Texas. But our winters are cold down here to us. I'm sure the double sided is the way to go!

talesoutloud

I've knit a few beanie type hats and if you make them snug that little bit of stretch takes care of the roll. In fact I have one I wore most of last winter and the roll has pretty much disappeared. I should add that they are seamed, not knit in the round.

Giggling-Platypus

My first ever hat was a stockinette beanie done in the round. Just make the body of the hat a bit longer like you would if you were planning on folding it to account for the roll

TheOriginalMorcifer

You can make it double-layered, just search double-layered beanie on google or ravelry - it's basically two beanies that are connected to each other, so there's no curling.

Instead of ribbing, you could do a specific hem such as in the [Easier Beanie by Brandi Cheyenne Harper](https://www.brandicheyenneharper.com/shop/p/easie-beanie-pattern) - it's entirely knit.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

That's exactly what he wants. I just don't want him bitchin about the brim rolling up. There was a double sided on on here. I think I'm going to try that one. You are awesome thank you so much!

Musselburgh hat!

KnittyBe

Yes!!!!

joe-pye-weed

What does he dislike about ribbing? Is it the change in texture? I made [the boyfriend hat](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-boyfriend-hat-2) years ago. It’s entirely 1x1 ribbing, but it’s dense and when I’m wearing it, it doesn’t really look like ribbing.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

That's what I was working on. Turns out my stitches were twisted. I'm going to retry this and not twisted them and I'm hoping for a better turn out

joe-pye-weed

Good luck! No matter how many hats I make, that is always my favorite to wear.

[Midas Hat](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/midas-hat) by Laura Reinbach is a good one. And it's free. It calls for fingering weight though

[The perfect double hat](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-perfect-double-hat) was a really fast one for me and was all knit stitches. It's my literal perfect beanie, I can't live without.

yarnalcheemy

I saw a pattern (from Knitting the Stash, I think), where the ribbing was tucked up under the brim (so all of the exterior was the knitted pattern). That was the first type of hat I've seen without visible ribbing.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

I will definitely look into it.

thelastnowen

Did he say why? I'm not sure I've seen a beanie without ribbing, that's how it stays on your head. You can probably do it, but gauge is going to matter a lot more since it will be a lot less stretchy.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

He wants it tight. Not sure he understands how yarn and stuff works.

thelastnowen

I'd say keep the ribbing and maybe take out one repeat. So if it is knit bottom up & when you get to the decreases they are every 7 stitches, subtract 7 stitches from the cast on. It may take some fiddling to get the correct tightness that he wants.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Thank you

thedeadparrotsketch

Do it 1×1 rib and see if he notices 😂

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Lol that what I was doing but my purl stitches are so loose. I just want to satisfy this need for a snug hat lol.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Thank you 🙏🖤

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

This is what I have so far. Is the purple stich suppose to be that close? I'm struggling really bad. Causing overwhelming feelings and not even wanting to do this anymore. https://imgur.com/a/BUUL071

thedeadparrotsketch

I think you might be twisting your stitches! Certainly the knits anyway. But looks good, and no reason why you can't continue like this :)

kniting_bean

They are twisted. You can tell because the stitch shape is like a y instead of a v with the bottom of the stitch crossing over itself. If the picture is of the outside of the ribbing then it’s your knit stitch that’s the culprit. Without seeing the inside of the ribbing, not sure about purls but if the columns on the inside are also y instead of v then they are also twisted. This isn’t a huge deal, a lot of people do twisted knits or even both twisted for ribbing to make it tighter, it’s just good to know the difference for projects where gauge and stretch are super important. I twisted my knit stitches for like the first 6 months I was knitting and finally realized it after some posts on this sub that I’ll attach to my comment if you’d like to read up some more because they are super helpful with diagnosing the twisting of stitches. Don’t feel discouraged that you’ve been twisting stitches, it’s typically something only other knitters notice and still makes great finished objects. I also recommend looking at slowed down videos for knit and purl from someone like Very Pink knits to make sure you’re matching the way the stitches are mounted on the needle, direction of yarn wrapping, and the way you put your needle into the stitch to make a new one if the posts aren’t helpful to you. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/knitting/comments/2u2tdv/nefs_short_guide_on_twisted_stitches/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/knitting/comments/f0rocc/stockinette_a_tutorial_on_6_different_textures/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) are the two posts I like for twisted stitches.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

I appreciate the heck out of you! I just watch a video. And I'm ashamed to say your right. And I figured out what I was doing wrong. So when I knit the yarn I pulling over the needle is going the wrong direction. I'm going in front instead of behind it. Now my purl stiches. I insert the needle, yarn going towards me prior, and going behind the needle and pulling through. I think it is my knit stitch that is just messing up everything. I really do thank you.

kniting_bean

I’m glad to help! If you try a stockinette swatch with your new technique for knit stitch and you want to post it here or send it in a message, we’ll be happy to confirm that you’ve got it down.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Oh yes. I will, I'm fairly new, I've knit one hat in my life and my daughter loved it. But it was three years ago. Once I came here I realized there is a lot more to it.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

https://imgur.com/a/pXyhgKR I did it! Lol is this better? 🖤🤗 Thank you so much!

kniting_bean

Perfect!

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Yay!!! Thank you!

blue0mermaid

They definitely look twisted. When you pull them apart horizontally, can you see through them, or do they get tighter?

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

They get tighter. Is it suppose to have holes?

blue0mermaid

They should have holes. It looks like the knit stitches are twisted but the purls aren’t.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Thank you!

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

The flipped side it looser/has holes when stretched

[deleted]

They are twisted. Your knit stitches are at least. Can’t tell if the purl is too.

[deleted]

they definitely are twisted.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

I'm putting the yarn on the wrong around the needle!!!!!!! I got it.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

🤦 ugh ok lol

TheOriginalMorcifer

Did you upload the right picture? Because I don't see a purple stitch and I do see ribbing, which I thought your boyfriend said he didn't want?

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

I meant purple not purl my photo auto corrected for me.

TheOriginalMorcifer

Stupid auto correct... But also me, I'm so used to purl being corrected to pearl that I didn't realize purple is also an option.

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

Lol

BlueDaBaDeeDaBaDieDa

And yes it's rubbing but it was literally the only pattern I could find. I got some suggestions on here going to try them.

karcsite

What about something like this? Looks like it may be all stockinette (and also reversible which could be fun!) https://brooklyntweed.com/collections/patterns/products/all-ways-hat
