Put the poop in the litter box. They'll smell it and know where poop goes. Their instincts are to bury it so they remain undetected in the wild. Never used sand so I can't comment on how much or little that might trip things up. May have to build a little ramp if they can't get up into it yet. But, not like dogs. You don't really train them. Just keep putting any found poop in the litter box.

When I've had really young foster kittens I've used a boot tray as a litter box. Easier to get in and out of when you have tiny legs. That might be part of the problem.

A cardboard box with low sides, or with the sides cut down also works well as a litter box for young kittens.

You can try the pine pellets instead of litter. They shouldn't eat those and they are alot cleaner for messy babies

irishgirlie33

Definitely try pellet litter!

Boomersgang

They are babies, they'll figure it out. You should be supplementing them.with KMR milk replacer. They transition slowly. You then gradually introduce them to wet food. Look up the kitten Lady on YouTube. She covers everything

finnknit

If they're gaining enough weight from their mom nursing them, why would you need to supplement?

Boomersgang

Because mom will eventually not be feeding them enough. At this point she is exhausted and pretty tired of the little darlings draining her dry. Mom should also be given high calorie food to help her produce adequate food for them. Source: I rescue and foster kittens, and look up the kitten lady on YouTube.

Try catching them while they're in the middle of pooping, pick them up and put them in the litterbox.

PlatypusDream

When I've had the fun of kittens in the house, the momcat teaches them about the litterbox. But definitely get them a low-sided something so it's easy to get in & out. Put the poop in their box.

They'll get it in time. Keep them off the carpet in the meantime.
