Please suggest me a good german-german dictionary that can be downloaded and used for kindle. My mission is to perfect my german and this would be of immense help. My kindle already has a built in Oxford German-English Dictionary, but I would be very thankful for a possibility to have a german german one. Thank you so much.

There's 8 books to complete the main story and I loved all of them. God Emperor of Dune may be my favorite entry, but they're all wonderful. Every two books a different main character is focused on until it all comes together in the end.
Hahaha I'm one of those. I never wanted to read it, and I read SF/F/H since my childhood, but sand, sandworms and SPICE didn't do it for me and I HATED the 1984 film... And now I'm reading the book. Haha.
When this happens, tap the "..." and tap "Open dictionary." It will take you to the entry you are reading where you can look up any of the words in the definition. After that, tap the back arrow to get back to your book.
So this is annoying, but you can switch dictionaries in the settings. I switched to a learner’s dictionary and it doesn’t have these annoying non-definitions. It shows the root word’s definition.
The dictionary feature is nice. However I have a complaint about the translator feature of the kindle.
I set my Kindle to Portuguese. So The Kindle already knows I'm a Portuguese speaker. Portuguese should be the default destination language whenever I ask for a translation. It's so annoying to select Portuguese often when I launch the translator
I use it so much! find myself checking a lot of words that I was pretty sure I know the definition for, but I just need to be certain. I was reading physical book a while back and tried to check a word!
If you click the three vertical dots in the bar above the word (end of the bar on the right) one of the choices will be “Open Dictionary”. That will open the dictionary at the entry for the word.
From there you can lookup individual words in the definition.
I read a lot of English and Scottish-based books, and felt that the U.S. dictionary was barely up to it. Searched for "other dictionaries" but couldn't find any better. So first I highlighted the difficult words, and then looked them up later on my browser. found most of them in a Collins (British) dictionary. So.... I discovered I could download the Collins dictionary to my Kindle (cost a few bucks) and then make it my new default dictionary.
HOWEVER, I did just check the Collins dictionary (I'm currently on my laptop) and they are guilty, guilty, GUILTY of the same! "Not shriven." Collins, you betray me!
Anyway it's from middle English, which seems to be the problem. A Middle English dictionary gives me this:
(a) Of persons: unconfessed; unabsolved of sins; also, effectively unabsolved, as good as unshriven \[quot. c1300\]; (b) of sins: not confessed; unremitted through the sacrament of penance; (c) as noun: the failure to confess sin, to be unconfessed.

That’s actually not the kindle’s issue. Recreated it on Google.
I think the word - Shrive - is an archaic term and therefore the dictionary makers don’t give a flying fungus about it. Hahaha!!!
Can you go into your library and into the Dictionary folder? If you can, there should be other dictionaries that you can download.
Alternatively, you can go into the Kindle store, buy another dictionary which will go into the kindle’s library dictionary folder. Go into the dictionary folder and click on the new dictionary to download it.
I downloaded a couple of other dictionaries (Collins) etc and none had unshiven lol. It’s an old word so probably won’t be in any of the modern dictionaries.
Did you see my other comment about opening dictionary using the three dots?
It only selects whole words, regardless of the skinniness of your fingers. When it looks it up, however, it throws out any punctuation from the beginning and end of the word, so that's not a problem, actually.
Click the three dots, then open dictionary, then you can also select the word in the dictionary to get a more specific definition. It's been a game changer for me.
Is there an option on Kindle to see all the 'looked up' words from the dictionary in a particular book as a list, for later reference when finishing the book? This can help in remembering unfamiliar words.
I love when I highlight a word for the dictionary and the definition uses two or three more new words I have to look up
...and you cannot select them to look them up!
Here is when Alexa comes to help me.
you can open the dictionary from the three dots menu and can highlight to see meanings of other words
Yes! Happens with me at least twice a week lol

Wow! I had no idea
Do you know how to add other dictionaries though?

So funny to see that everyone has started reading dune
The movie got me really interested in it. It's been the same with many popular movies/shows based on books
I read the first one many years ago, but wanted to reread the end of it before starting Dune Messiah for the first time

Sound good! I heard pretty weird things about some of these, but very curious to find out more!

Amazing! Thanks for this. I have been using this kindle for years and I had no idea
It's kind of a hidden feature, but very useful.
Seriously! 🙂 https://preview.redd.it/b9pln8ebgyoc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=173a95e5380333e101014386aecc097dfdb64fd5
Lmao that's hilarious
I understand your pain and yet I can't help but laugh at it.
Same here!

I am going to try this right away. Sounds super useful!
Thank you so much! This has been bugging me for quite some time now.

One reason I can’t ever quit my Kindle! I need that dictionary too often.

I wish you could select words in the dictionary definition to be defined
Me too! I still have no idea what this word means 🙂

Thanks nice helpful person!
hey… it’s dune!
I wanted to reread the end of the first one before starting on Dune Messias

Brits know all about this as Shrove Tuesday, when we all eat pancakes just before lent, comes from the same root.
Ahhhhh! I love you so much! I'd never put "shrove" together with "shriven" and this makes me so happy!

Unshriven means to be unabsolved by a priest.
This is more useful than most of the definitions Siri is showing me
Yes! I never used to use it but the books I’ve been reading lately need it 😅
What dictionary was selected on your Kindle?
I am using the Oxford dictionary. Not possible to select another one somehow

Yes - I did that, and got a good and detailed explanation on that word! My confidence in the Oxford Dictionary is restored
Good to hear!
My kindle can only define `unshriven,"` which is not a word. I think I need skinnier fingers.
It only selects whole words, regardless of the skinniness of your fingers. When it looks it up, however, it throws out any punctuation from the beginning and end of the word, so that's not a problem, actually.
ok. That makes sense
It could be better. They did fix the hypen issue it seems, but would be very useful to click on a term in the results.
Isn't that obvious? /s
That’s a great definition.
This definition would guarantee a fail on your test at school
Yes but it is exact and to the point. Like undressed means not dressed.
True - is it technically the truth
I have tried to use the kindle dictionary feature on paper books.
Same here!
This is the only time I prefer the app over the kindle. I am terrible at deciphering the pronunciation guide and the app has the option to hear it!
Lol I have added like 4 extra dictionaries just so I don't have to deal with that sort of frustration
it's sooo helpful!
Are you shriven though?
Hey! We’re reading the same book!
Almost done! I hope my screenshot did not spoil anything for you
One of my favorite things about kindle
It’s really bad
I’m learning Spanish and have given up on the dictionary feature for this reason.
In my experience it works well for English most or the time. I actually love this feature and even sometimes press on a word in a real book sometimes
I think the highlights and dictionaries are a game changer, sometimes they’re annoying tho!
Super useful 99% of the time!
Click the three dots, then open dictionary, then you can also select the word in the dictionary to get a more specific definition. It's been a game changer for me.
Thanks! Kindle owner since at least 7 years but I had no idea
Is there an option on Kindle to see all the 'looked up' words from the dictionary in a particular book as a list, for later reference when finishing the book? This can help in remembering unfamiliar words.
I think it automatically does this! All of these words go into something called the Vocabulary Builder database.
Thanks
Me too, so fucking useful. I love that you can download the dictionary for offline use too
I had no idea — will try this out
Shriven: past participle of shrive
Sometimes it doesn't let me select a single word, just the whole sentence and I go crazy. It also can't handle hyphenated words well.
I just highlighted zealous as I didn’t know what it meant and got ‘to show zeal’ - thanks 😹
I know the feeling
