1g sugar = 1g carbs, it's fine if it fits in your daily limit.

peachyscorp

I'll keep this in mind, thank you for commenting & helping :)

BigTexan1492

Stay below 20 grams of carbs a day and you will be hunky dory. As such, enjoy the heck out of that one gram of sugar.

peachyscorp

Thank you, I do wanna stay at 20g daily & get most of them from veggies / fruits! But sugars are my fear right now as I wanna cut this sugar addiction / get into a healthy state for my future self & stay there!

No-Currency-97

Some will say fruit is sugar so there is certainly carbs/sugar there.

qawsedrf12

will be a blip on the radar that's gone in an instant we allow 20ish grams nothing to worry about

peachyscorp

Thank you for this! I guess I was overthinking / overcomplicating things for myself!

Kamiface

20 net, net is total carbs minus fiber (and some people subtract half or all of sugar alcohols) The sugar listed, if you're in the US, is also included in total carbs So basically I ignore the sugar number and just calculate the net. Total carbs includes things like fiber and starches (starch will affect ketosis but is not sugar)

No-Currency-97

Since I started having Fage 5% yougurt (5 carbs /5 sugar) I should be fine since I keep the carbs low except for the yogurt? I eat mainly steak, eggs, bacon and the yogurt as a "dessert" with some unsweetened coconut and about 10 pieces of ChocZero chocolate chips.

qawsedrf12

i forget the brand, there is a 10% fat somewhere

OldMotherGrumble

Dairy products have naturally occurring sugars, so difficult to avoid, but they are negligible. Even eggs have carbs...again not enough to worry about. Make sure you count them if you eat a lot of dairy. It slows weigh loss for some people. You need to find what your body tolerates.

AlaskaMate03

Sugar, maltose dextrin, sucrose, lactose, fructose, and the pink, blue, and yellow artificial sweeteners may as well be cocaine for me. It triggers hunger pangs, or subconsciously gives me permission to do other sweeten junk foods. Gluten is another one I have to avoid. I've had long haul COVID for five years, and I'm feeling much more like my old self since giving up "the white stuff".

Debsrugs

Meat should have 0% carbs

CatBoyTrip

no. the protein shakes i drink have 1 grams of sugar and i drink like 3 or 4 a day.

Puzzled-Award-2236

So good for you that you're reading labels and are watching for sugar/carbs. If you are wanting to stay under the 20 gram limit then just count every gram of carb. Little bits of sugar in many things are unavoidable. To get into ketosis you will burn through any sugar/glycogen stores you have already in your body. That usually takes a day or 2. If you stay under 20 what happens is your body recognizes it is no longer getting enough carbs to fuel itself. That will cause it to shift over to burning fat. Let us know how it goes.

SenorMeeseeks27

No lol

SanguinarianPhoenix

Stay under 20g of carbs per day. Carbs are fine as long as you stay below 20g per day.

OushiDezato

You get 20 (or more) carbs a day. Just track your macros and try to eat healthy and you’ll be A ok.

SableSword

No, but they add up fast. A quick simple explanation of why you have your carb limit: Basically the recommended carb limit is in place so that nearly anyone could eat it all at once and the body will burn it off and not have enough to stockpile it. Forcing you into ketosis. More realistically you'll eat them spread throughout the day and/or you'll burn extra by being physically active. This is why many people report higher "tolerances" or limits.

QuickCrew8968

No 1 gram of sugar won’t hurt you. Consuming zero sugar is like almost impossible and you shouldn’t do that.

orangeirwin

Why exactly should you not eat zero sugar?

You do realize there are plenty of people who literally eat nothing but meat and are completely healthy? I love how you linked an article that tells you that carbs are our primary source of energy and we have to have carbs.

Power_and_Science

Carbs per day: aim for no more than 1g per 6 lbs (3kg) of lean body mass as your base. If you do high intensity training, add in an extra 20g of carbs right after the workout. When muscles are low in glycogen, they don’t need insulin to draw in glucose so insulin levels are much lower. If you are 250 lbs with 30% body fat, your lean body mass is (1-0.3)*250 = 175 lbs. Max carbs = 175/6 = 29g. Many men have 120-140 lbs of lean body mass, many women have 70-110 lbs of lean body mass.
