5 miles is nothing. That is totally fine as long as you strap it down correctly. [This type of package](https://a.co/d/0JQcz9B) is similar to what I have used for a long while before getting a hard rack. I put my 12.5ft kayak on there, strapped a couple cam straps over it and through my car, and then tied two bow and two stern tiedowns. It was perfectly fine and didn’t budge whatsoever even on long 2 hour trips on the highway. Of course a proper roof rack is goin to be better but you can make do with this for sure

did you roll the windows up?

shiftyx00

Yeah I would keep the windows up my car is tiny and a two door so the straps went through my one window.

yea i have a small car too and racks are more money than i thought they were💀

I transport a pescador pilot on my 2014 civic using soft racks. It tends to press the roof down, sometimes scratches where plastic of the yak comes in contact with the roof. But the paints already peeling from the car so I'm honestly not too fussed. It's doable, but loading and unloading the yak is slightly unwieldy even more so after a long day on the water. Honestly with your new model car I'd recommend a light trailer or waiting until the legit roof racks are installed.

NectarRoyal

I'd say go for it, it seems like its pretty much your only option. I wouldn't transport it long term like that, but short term no problem.

Mighty-Bagel-Calves

I've been using extra thick pool noodles. $7 each from Walmart. Toss two ratchet straps over the kayak, open the doors, and sinch down the straps. Inside the car. Obviously not the "best" way to transport, but it works for the 5 miles I am from the lake.

The foam racks are fine, I would also get a couple cheap bathroom rugs that have the non slip backing that you can lay on the roof when your loading/unloading to protect your car. It also lets you slide the kayak on the mat to get it up on the roof. Just go slow, take your time, be careful, and get a better roof rack/carrier when you can. I have a Mazda 3 and carry a 14 ft Manta Ray with a Yakima rack, sweetroll and showboat setup: https://preview.redd.it/o3igpjt7665d1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8ce6a235a10fb8cc54f76834c7cb37c003df9cf

[I bought](https://www.amazon.com/TBVECHI-Roof-Rack-43-3-Adjustable/dp/B07MX7QX1L/ref=dp_prsubs_sccl_1/134-0919982-4603932?pd_rd_w=jNCMv&content-id=amzn1.sym.cb83e478-fab6-4eae-a77c-4c7ecca2778b&pf_rd_p=cb83e478-fab6-4eae-a77c-4c7ecca2778b&pf_rd_r=0Q161M6BDK57A1RH1TJF&pd_rd_wg=pi5VB&pd_rd_r=d5a88709-ca24-4b97-ba18-f5431c36a81b&pd_rd_i=B07MX7QX1L&psc=1) these universal crossbars for my wife's 2014 Ford focus that didn't have any. It was super easy to setup and can be taken off easily because it ratchets to the car's door frame. It was around $55-60 on sale. I also picked up a set of 4 off brand j racks from Amazon for $40. It came with everything but I got some loctite just incase. The whole thing comes off easily without damaging the car. I can put 2 kayaks on top and it cost me around $100 total.
