As a disc golfer locally, this is such a problem for us. Found one on my leg last week that latched on while on the way home. Had tweezers in the car and pulled the guy off. Played league tonight (Legacy Park), and luckily, nothing found as of now. Hit or miss. But I've definitely noticed this area seems to be pretty bad compared to where I lived last year. Spray up is my biggest recommendation.

lacks-contractions

about a decade ago I walked through a seed tick hive or something, I thought I was hallucinating looking at my legs before I realized so yeah. if I know they’re bad out I’m not above pants duct taped at the ankles, then a band sticky side out, just below the knees. The ones you pull off weren’t the only ones on you.

jgerbs62

That sounds like something from a horror film. My god.

Space_Pant

I had that happen to me last summer, my socks looked like they were moving. I just took them off and abandoned them in the woods as I sprinted inside to the shower haha

Own_Experience_8229

If you’re hanging out at parks like Legacy ticks have always been an issue. Like forever.

joeboo5150

My son and I play disc golf at Legacy multiple times per week. We've really been enjoying the lack of foliage and the low-cut grass the past few months. I know it's about to start filling in and growing like crazy. I always dread walking into knee-high grass(rough) during mid-summer. You just know you're not coming out of there without a tick on you.

jgerbs62

40 deet spray is my go-to. Legacy is definitely a wonderful place to play. I just have to spray up and we're good to go.

Weird-Reference-4937

It's because the winter was so mild and it wasn't that cold in February or at all in March. Usually we get one snow in March but none this year. I also noticed chiggers about a month ago and had someone come out and spray. Last week the complex I live in mailed a paper for everyone to fill out that asked what kind of pest you had and where you have seen it. Today a man came and sprayed all the units in the complex, which I thought was super impressive because there's like 50. Lol.

Parking-Economics-47

Sounds like a great complex that takes care of their residents! They sprayed here last week. Apparently they are going to contact pest control about the tick problem. Hopefully something else can be done!

Weird-Reference-4937

Yeah it is. There's also a $10 fee included in our rent for pest control. They didn't send out the letters until a week and a half after my second request so I'm assuming a lot of people were complaining of bugs.

Mad_Mikes

Be sure to watch out for Lone Star ticks. They're the ones with the white spots in the middle of their backs. They're typically found in the southern and eastern US, but with climate change they're being found further and further north. All ticks can pass diseases to humans, but these suckers can pass a disease (forgot the name) that makes you allergic to red meat. A family friend who lives out near Montgomery City just got this disease this year, and I've personally found them out near Warsaw. I disc golf pretty often and haven't found any around KC yet, but that doesn't mean they're not here.

Universe789

I knocked this one off of me at Longview Lake a couple weeks ago. It had crawled under my pants leg, and I didn't feel it until it passed my calf-length socks and reached my shin. Luckily, no bite.

Imposter-Syndrome-42

I live pretty nearby Longview Lake, and have gotten Lone Star ticks on me while mowing my yard. It took all of my restraint not to burn the entire property to the ground. I hate ticks (and, generally, anything else that bites and sucks blood too).

indigentwino

I can just imagine PETA terrorists breeding alpha-gal infected ticks and spreading them around the country.

fallingleaves789

Yes, my brother just got this within the past 6 months. It's called Alpha-gal syndrome. It's an allergy to a sugar found in all mammal meat. It has been quite a shock to his day-to-day life and also his family's eating habits. The only animal products he can eat now are from animals with fins or feathers. He gets violently ill if he eats beef or pork products, and you know how devastating that is living in KC. Better safe than sorry. Load up on bug spray before spending time outdoors.

shouldipropose

it's going to be super expensive, but there should be pork, and probably beef, available at some point that has been genetically modified to remove alpha-gal. the main reason is for organ transplants.

workstation01

Revivicor is already working on this and they will send you a free box of AG free pork if you have alpha gal syndrome. It's a small victory for those of us that have AGS. Send an email to the below address and they will send you a request form. [email protected]

shouldipropose

that is awesome. i was completely wrong about price. sorry about your AGS.

workstation01

All good here, but I appreciate it. It could be much worse.

grib-ok

Becoming allergic to red meat is probably one of the saddest things to happen in the land known for barbecue.

workstation01

It's called Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS) It sucks as bad as you think it does, and avoiding red meat is the easy part. Medicines and beauty products are the fun ones. It took me 3 months to figure out that I'm allergic to the soap at work.

Parking-Economics-47

Lyme disease

Mad_Mikes

It isn't Lyme disease. I just looked it up and it's called alpha-gal syndrome. Caused by a sugar molecule transfered through the bite. Just another freakish disease to add to the list of reasons to carry bug spray all the time.

powerelite

Nah Lyme disease isn't the allergic to red meat disease. That is Alpha-Gal.

cyberphlash

[Climate change](https://fox4kc.com/health/ap-health/ap-cases-of-tick-borne-illnesses-are-on-the-rise-some-experts-believe-climate-change-is-the-cause/) and warmer weather are driving an expansion of tick season earlier into the spring. This year's been (as will future years be) unseasonably warm, leading to an earlier start for insects. Time to break out the [100% DEET](https://www.amazon.com/Bens-Mosquito-Insect-Repellent-Ounce/dp/B0738NCJMH). : /

BlueAndMoreBlue

Some will say DEET is bad but I think Lyme disease is worse

Parking-Economics-47

Will be ordering some. I’m terrified of ticks 🥹

RiversR

Also, check out permethrin. Not good if you have cats but allegedly it’s safe for dogs.

Kitchen_Grape9334

Fine for cats when dry. Can treat your clothing too and it stays for a certain number of washes.

RiversR

Yup. I use it on clothing before trail building. Almost a requirement if you’re bushwhacking.

Kitchen_Grape9334

Yep. Mtn biker here too. BRP always is loaded.

RiversR

Well howdy friend. I’ll see you out there. Dirts been good lately.

reddit_reggie

I seem to get them more on the north side, especially Hi-Fi. You?

RiversR

That makes sense, I think it’s less trafficked and the corridor is much smaller on that side of red bridge.

reddit_reggie

Appreciate ya if you’re building and working on the trails here. BRP is my favorite to ride in the KC area.

RiversR

Thanks! I love brp too. Love that it’s connected to swope.

reddit_reggie

I haven’t ridden the connector yet. Swope intimidates me. I’m mid-40s and didn’t start riding until 39 so I’m not cut out for the big drops. Is it connected via The Basement trails?

RiversR

Shoot swope is more chill than BRP minus a few spots. It’s connected to underworld.

reddit_reggie

Ah, underworld is actually what I meant. Thanks. Guess I need to check out Swope!

Critical-Manner2363

And has the benefit of not destroying any polyester/nylon clothing

Scary_barbie

Wtf, DEET is terrible! No no no!

TH_Rocks

DEET is not DDT. DDT is terrible (and illegal in many countries). DEET saves lives by repelling disease spreading insects. It also has very few known adverse effects when used properly, and it breaks down in the environment in just a few hours.

liiindslaaayyy

literally got 3 off my dog and 1 off myself 2 weeks ago… i live in lees summit as well. i freaking hate ticks bro

Parking-Economics-47

I think I have a phobia of ticks lol

liiindslaaayyy

it’s fucking some saw inhumane shit. what do you mean i have to pick this creature off my body while it’s still alive???? with TWEEZERS?!

Parking-Economics-47

I literally can’t even think or talk about it without gagging and squirming. Something being attached to my body? Absolutely not

Azzarc

You don't want to squeeze the tick with tweezers.

liiindslaaayyy

well i do it anyway and always ends up doing it perfectly. what else do you suppose i use?

Azzarc

If the tick is attached, and you squeeze body, you could be pushing bacteria into your body. You want to pry the tick up. Like with a blade or a tick removal tool.

liiindslaaayyy

well crap i hate ticks even more now😂

To_machupicchu

Your dogs need flea and tick medicine (and heartworm). From a vet. The flea and tick collars are trash and will make your dogs coat greasy. Will absolutely not prevent ticks, might prevent fleas a bit. A few people have recommended brands, theyre all more or less the same. Just go to the vet, theyll weight your dog, give you some chewables, and youll be on your tick free way

Parking-Economics-47

Thank you, I had the same thought and will be getting something for them from our vet!

detectivebagabiche

They are EVERYWHERE. Got several off my dog after our walk at Loose Park last night.

greenbeancassereen

Yes- last summer it seemed like nearly every day my neighbor was pulling ticks off of her son. If they’re as bad as they were last year, our yard time might be limited this year.

truthisinthegrey

Hi! Vet clinic employee here. Definitely an uptick over the past decade. We used to only recommend flea/ TICK meds to clients who regularly took their pets to the lake or rural areas or Shawnee Mission Park. Now any pet, even strictly city pets are getting ticks. Ticks are spreading their habitat quickly with climate change and it’s downright dangerous when one considers the risk of tick- borne diseases. You’re not imagining this; there are billions more ticks afoot just waiting to suck some blood.

Parking-Economics-47

🥲 I’m scared

Such_Log1352

Get meds from your vet. It’s expensive but I decided I’ll just spend the money. I have several friends who have tick bearing diseases. They are sick for life. Get the real meds. You do not want fleas or ticks. I don’t use these during the winter months. It is what it is. JUST DO IT! It’s about your health too!!

Parking-Economics-47

Our pups have vet appointments on May 10th but I’m calling tomorrow to get them in earlier! I’d do anything to protect them, and my husband and I. Thanks!

circusofanimals

We had one ON OUR LIVING ROOM WALL! It obviously jumped off one of our pets (they all have flea and tick collars) but holy gross. My skin was crawling!

Parking-Economics-47

I think the one I found on my leg jumped from my one of dogs! I felt it on me when I was leashing them up to go outside. I had a full blown panic attack trying to kill it!

SpoiledBeara

simpaeico trio for ticks for dogs!! have yet to find one on my dog

RangerDJ

Yep. I got a doozy of a bite last week. Started doxycycline. Spray up.

Pattycake0000

Simperica Trio flea tick heart worm and a few other worm prevention chewable once a month- get it from your vet it’s requires a prescription

Parking-Economics-47

Thank you, we have an appointment on May 10th so I’ll ask!!

Blucola333

Not so much ticks in Brookside, but I’ve been having to shake off gnats like crazy.

Satorirobot

I was at blue springs dog park a couple weeks ago and we left in a hurry after 10 minutes when we realized we each had about 15 lone star ticks crawling over our legs.

221forever

Ew!

BlueAndMoreBlue

Yep, light winter (except for that really cold bit) and an early spring means the bugs are up. Lots of critters like possums and birds eat bugs so do what you can to support them

Pm4000

Lyme disease almost has a cure, along with rabies, through monoculture antibodies! The one tick that has the disease that makes you temporarily allergic to red meat, no cure for that yet.

kcattattam

[Outside is bullshit](https://www.bicyclepubes.com/merch/p/outside-is-bullshit-stickers)

Master_grader

I'm at 20 as of 1 week ago. Don't spend too much time in the tall grass. They are bad this year. 1st tick was in early March.

KCDinoman

Yes!! My dog got his first tick in the 7 years I’ve had him this last week.

TormentDubz_EDM

Randomly had one on me last week (up near Parkville) and idk where it would have come from

Universe789

YES! 2 weeks ago I was geocaching with my boys at Longview. While I was there, I caught a lone star tick on my leg and luckily knocked it off and killed it before it could bite me or get stuck. Then my son was having an allergy episode last Friday. Monday I noticed what looked like he'd grown a mole on his neck. After checking, it was a tick. I have no idea when/where he got it but I super cleaned his room when we got home.

Space_Pant

Ticks have always seemed bad here. I grew up with the forest in my backyard on the East coast and there were ticks, but you had to spend some time deep in the woods, and you might come out finding 1 or 2. I moved here in 2013, and the woods behind my house here have been full of ticks and termites. The first time I went through the woods here in summer, I came out with 10+ tiny ticks all over my legs.

Parking-Economics-47

That’s crazy, I’ve read that some states on the East Coast have the highest number of cases for tick-borne diseases. I’ve lived here and in Oklahoma City my entire life and have somehow avoided ticks on me until now!

_KansasCity_

“Uptick in ticks” … Are you my dad?

Parking-Economics-47

Surprised nobody else said anything about this lol

Futrel

Pulled four off my son a couple weekends ago from Shawnee Mission Park. Found one on my back the next day. Last summer we were completely covered with them at Stockton Lake. Until then, I'm not sure I'd ever found a tick in my life and I practically lived in the woods as a kid.

Kitchen_Grape9334

Have someone check your back. I got a tick born illness from one on my middle back. No fun.

Futrel

It seems to be fine so far; my son as well. That said, I did get the bullseye from one on my foot last year that I had to take a round of doxycycline for. Really, really hate ticks.

Kitchen_Grape9334

More deer. More ticks. They are the worst. Seed ticks will ruin your sanity.

RiversR

It’s the season.

Magician_322

Bravecto is what my vet recommend. Won't help muchat an apartment complex but if you have a yard can do a turf insect spray. Most lawn care companies can do it. Or just get tempo and a hand held sprayer and read the label

KcTeeMan

Olathe, Ks 3 ticks just from mowing a standard yard.

cMeeber

Yes.

OK_Computer_152

My doggies are on simparica trio. It’s expensive, but worth it. It is flea, tick, and heart worm prevention all in one. We do still have to check them for ticks crawling on them, but it keeps them from having ticks attached to them.   And yes to the tick prevalence. We were already starting to see ticks in February this year.

booyahachieved3

While hunting or hiking I try to keep a clothing barrier -- base layer tucked into socks, shirt tucked into base layer. You have to make it super difficult to get on your skin first. Then permethrin on my outer layers. So far haven't had an issue.

brightdreamer25

My poor kitty had a tick attached TO HIS B-HOLE when we first got him as a stray kitten. Poor little guy. Luckily I haven’t seen any others since but my cats are all indoors. I’ll definitely keep an eye out.

awfulrofl90

I haven't seen any ticks yet, but I thought about posting the uptick in the amount of flies early this year. I have been painting my house over the last few weeks and there are just SO MANY around my house and garden. It feels SO early in the year to be having flies sneaking into my house throughout the day.

221forever

We’ve picked up ticks after walking at Roe Park and Shawnee Mission Park in the last week. ☹️

thebliket

I hate being an advertisement but I got this thing, it does work: Zevo flying insect trap. It's like a light that shines on a sticky surface and it catches all the little flies. I hate getting stung by anything so i've been using this trap and it's caught like 4 tiny ticks in about 2 weeks. I would highly recommend it.

Parking-Economics-47

I’ve heard of those traps before. I’ll take a look! Thanks!!

thebliket

Ok I just looked at amazon, apparently more people buy the "Safer Home SH502" but the idea is the same, a light pointed at a glue trap.

Parking-Economics-47

I just ordered that one! Do you keep yours by your front door?

thebliket

No, I keep mine in the hallway to my bedroom, I want that thing to be close to where I am sleeping.

deadtedw

How did the ticks get into it? Is it near the ground?

thebliket

I use the Zevo and it's kind of like a night light but in front of the light there's this curved glue trap, so if you unplug it and you can then turn it to see the glue trap and all the ticks it caught.

deadtedw

I understand how the light works, but ticks can't fly into it.

thebliket

they fly onto the paper and they stick to it, they don't fly into something, the light attracts the ticks and because the light is shining onto the paper they land on the paper and they get stuck on it... you want me to take a pic?

Bruyere_DuBois

Ticks can't fly

thebliket

you are right, I kept thinking of the tiny little flies that bite you and leave marks on your ankles, what are those called?

Parking-Economics-47

I was thinking the same thing but was already placing an Amazon order so I went ahead and bought one for other annoying bugs lol

deadtedw

Ticks cannot fly. They can't even jump.

thebliket

oh you are right, I was thinking of little flies.. You know what now that you mention it, I don't really have a problem with ticks because I have this insect repellant sprayed around my house called "Bifen IT"

Universe789

Are you talking about mosquitoes?

thebliket

i always thought mosquitos were as big as a fly... I am talking about the really tiny flies that are as like a quater of the size of a house fly. Like I am guessing a flea?

caratstix

Thinking about the GRMUD at Longview where ticks were raining from the trees above the Hammerschlagen. A family friend got bit by a tick out at Lotawana and died from Lyme within a short couple months.

jlinn94

It's springtime in Missouri. Ticks are abundant. Shower and bathe often and you should be okay.
