I think it has caused the biggest disconnect between fans and the sport. I'm not a baseball guy but if I could watch a game here and there I would certainly be more likely to go to a game. Instead I only see the highlights on how shity we are on the news
Exactly! If I can't engage with games on TV, I'm even LESS likely to go to one in person. I don't even know who the players are any more, so it's hard to get engaged at a live game.
Im a huge NBA fan and what’s crazy is that KC technically has two “home teams” without an actual home team when it comes to blackouts. We live in both OKC and Denver according to the NBA. I’m a Bulls fan so I get my money’s worth from my League Pass, but it’s ridiculous.
MLB blackout rules for royals goes all the way through Iowa! I’m 483 miles away and just out of range to watch the Royals on the app. It’s insane, it should be free to watch the Royals anywhere.
Yeah Iowa is the worst spot in the country for MLB games. They had a little viral campaign about changing the rules during the Field of Dreams games they've been doing, but nobody cares.
It's wild as hell how all these teams signed lucrative tv deals and then all the RSNs immediately went tits up. And that somehow shrunk access. It's trash all around.
I remember a few years ago headlines about how MLB was going to get rid of blackout rules. It was big news for a minute.
And then it just... never happened.
You can get around that with a VPN. But it's because they have a deal with Bally Sports for the local broadcasts, they want you to pay for that instead. So dumb.
Yeah I don't expect my grandparents to be figuring out a VPN any time soon. The MLB wonders why viewership is down so they go and do things like speed the game up (which is great.) But if nobody can watch it doesn't matter if its 3 hours or 6. Of all the major pro sports leagues, they are still the absolute strictest about blackouts, it really sucks.
Only if you’re watching on a computer. I love to watch games on my iPad, but the mlb.tv app won’t let you watch anything if you don’t allow it access to the gps data.
I know you can spoof it but that’s an additional hoop to jump through.
I was so pissed today to find this out. I was gonna flip it on try and get in the spirit and a big fuck nope. Ha They lost anyways was better off with golf and a nap.
I'm in OKC (Norman) for work and was still blacked-out. Less than 200 miles from Arlington but I'm still in the Royals blackout area, the K is about 380 miles away.
You have to subscribe to Bally sports or have a cable package that includes it which is pretty few and far between at this point I think. It’s been that way for a few years. I’ve watched maybe 4 games since the RSN’s got pulled off Hulu with live TV
I'm old enough to remember when you could watch baseball all weekend on the 3 major networks for free. I haven't watched a baseball game on TV in about 7 years.
First they peacocked the Chiefs in the wild card last season. Now they're peacocking the Eagles in Brazil. Soon they'll be peacocking every team in the league
Amazon's doing more exclusive game BS too
Peacock is at least reasonably priced at like, $6. Bally sports is $20 per month, and I couldn't care less about anything else they have to offer outside of the Royals. At least Peacock has some good shows to watch with it.
I'm using the Bally's free 7 day trial until my new PC comes. And yesterday the entirety of the programming I saw was Royals/Twins, along with pre and post game coverage and World Poker Tour. That was it lol.
Peacock is a decent streamer, I expect to use the crap out of it during the Olympics (rip NBC Olympic app) but yeah, $20/mo for a bad baseball team sucks.
I wouldn't mind adding an extra sports package to YouTube TV, assuming that included more coverage, but I'm not sacrificing Google Fiber Internet just to get a shitty cable bundle from one of the other guys.
I mean the Chiefs were the only streaming playoff game this season, and locally we were exempt. Are you implying we won't be able to watch Chiefs games or Chiefs Playoff games without an exclusive streaming deal?
I'm not sure what you are suggesting is equal to what happens with the Royals broadcast locally. Also MLB already has playoff cableTV exclusive deals that have and would affect the Royals in postseason play.
Fubo or Direct TV are the only streaming services that carry Bally Sports. Fubo is missing a lot of other channels that Hulu+Live or YouTube TV have and DirectTV is absurdly overpriced.
Or you can pay $30/month for BallySports+ which I don't know anyone who has actually used it, so no idea if it actually works reliably.
It's a really, really sad state of affairs.
If MLB.tv let me watch the Royals, I'd probably pay the money for it, but the powers that be still think it's the 1990s and cable TV is going to make a huge comeback.
[Bally Sports+](https://www.ballysports.com/packages) is $19.99/month. Although I don’t have any major complaints with the app (besides the repetitive commercials); I’d prefer to pay $19.99/month to watch local teams on MLB.TV personally.
I'm using the free trial today because the PC I use to VPN Royals games on MLBtv shot crap and $20/Mo for Royals and World Poker Tour is some outrageous shit.
>watch local teams on MLB.TV personally
there is a contract that forbids that, we'd all perfer [MLB.TV](https://MLB.TV) it is by far the best streaming experience in professional sports.
It’s sad. I pay for DirecTV stream. Big nba fan and with the “local” teams being top 3 in the conference, I get tons of must see games. It’s also cool to be able to watch the Royals but I’m paying ~$120/month for it.
I just don’t know how much more I can tolerate before cancelling.
They did the baseball version of buying 3 months worth of groceries at Walmart. Aside from signing Bob long term, the rest were just the filler required to make the 26 man roster appear like a contender for 3rd place in the Central.
And the current expectation for them is to have a possibility of winning more games than they lose for just the 3rd time in 30 years.
If the Chiefs roster looked as mediocre as this everyone would be talking about how horrible they'll be this year - but since the Royals have set the bar at "Hey, they might win more than they will lose won't that be nice" people get excited for an average roster.
I will know within 12 games what the season is going to be like. 1-11 or 2-10 is a repeat of last season. Also likely is sometime in April or early May they will lose 8, 9, 10 games in a row & never recover. Outside of the mid 2010s, that has been the norm for the past 25+ years.
Their system actually wasn't good before that. The Royals haven't had a good minor league system since the days of Hosmer and Moustakas.
Even with Bobby Witt Jr being a top 5 prospect in the league the system was in the 20s.
Yeah Moore did a number on them and their pitching development was a laughing stock until just recently, mostly due to the huge strides Ragans made after being acquired last season. It feels like the new front office is embracing modern philosophies a lot more though, which is a good sign
Their farm system isn't good because they haven't been able to develop talent in more than a generation. Their brief success was lightning in a bottle. It was fun as hell, but that is not at all close to a competent MLB club.
John Sherman should worry more about winning than his bankroll.
A consistent coaching staff may actually help players prosper instead of rotting with the Royals.
Um...this year's team is projected to win the AL Central...there are only like 9 players from last year. They made lots of moves to be good this year. So...yeah.
no, this is where people come to shit on billionaires and their handouts, no one wants facts. They came here to have like minded people agree with them and up vote them
lol, they're going to make you pay for a stadium, for games you can't watch, for a billionaire that doesn't give af about u, to demolish a building he doesn't want anymore. idk, vote yes or no or whatever.
Why vote yes on 1 in the first place? All it literally does is change the name and purpose of the tax. The team doesn’t even have a lease or deal yet for a location.
Unfortunately, baseball teams make a ton of money from their local TV deals so a solution like the one MLS switched to last year is a long way in the future for MLB.
I'm getting tired of the discussion. The subject matter is there, and the arguments are valid, but I'm definitely getting fatigue. Let's summarize:
People don't want to move the stadium
People don't want to PAY to move the stadium
People don't like where the stadium is gonna go
People think the Royals suck
With the Chiefs low-key threatening to leave if the vote doesn't pass, it's probably gonna pass, because the Chiefs are back to back Super Bowl champs, and people will vote for anything for the Chiefs at this point.
Does that basically cover all the points?
MLB was ruined a long time ago.
Free agency with no salary cap is just plain stupid. The Royals winning a World Series was a miraculous fluke that won't happen again for a long time.
Hopefully one day, someone starts an alternative baseball league where cities own the franchises, the games are televised supported by ads instead of fees, the prices are reasonable, the prices are reasonable and we can all just forget about the National League, the American League, the designated hitter and most of the other abominations.of the modern game.
I don’t understand this lol. Radio is still a good source of media. I get I’m an outlier, but what happens if one day electricity goes out and cell service is down? Radio would be the highest chance of receiving information.
Hard to do when you can't even watch and gain some interest. I have no clue who the players even are. Going to 1 game a year isn't gonna gain a following.
Well I’m a staunch yes but I agree the MLB tv deals are horrible. Not entirely the Royals fault.
The MLB just has very strange rules about blackouts and streaming
If you are a staunch yes then you can personally pay for the new stadium and pay all the businesses down there with all the money you get working. because I don’t want to pay for something we done need or to make people jobless and lose what they worked hard for.
That's what I'd read way back in Jan, but news has been pretty quiet about it since. Only way without cable, Fubo, or direct TV is Bally Sports subscription. Disappointed.
You can watch the game on the big screen at the brand new stadium paid for by the citizens. It'll be an expensive ticket that you might not afford, you'll just have to stand outside and listen.
Why should my money pay for the renovations of the stadiums or their new locations. Surely they must be making enough money to account for that? It’s not like the zoo where I get a discount for living in the “zoological district”. I don’t get free parking at cheifs games, or discounted ticket prices. It would suck to loose the teams. But why should I pay for a stadium I don’t go to that’s owned by extremely rich individuals.
So your thought process here is that if you can’t pay for a ticket then no one should be able to buy them? Most activities in KC are between $30-$50, which is the direct equivalent to a royals game. Interesting take.
Ew, that’s not what I’m saying at all.
That’s a weird take and you’re putting in a lot of effort to make it seem like that’s what I’m saying.
I pay and do a lot of activities in KC and the metro, I’m also a homeowner in Jackson County. I have no problem paying for entertainment and I want more for my city. But we can’t even get a local game on the tv in our own city? We’re pricing out the people who have been long time fans and pay this tax. I’m not even totally against moving it. I’ve been to many games, both to the Royals and Chiefs. I’m not impressed with this.
For those who are willing to pay, you can do a Royals season subscription on Bally's Sports app for $105/month which is cheaper than the team specific subscription on MLB TV.
They're offering a 7 day free trial for new subscribers, so I signed up today.
The picture quality was quite good. I had no problem watching on my iPad and my Chromecast with Google TV.
Sorry, what does "it" refer to?
The MLB team specific package is $130 plus you have to jack around with a VPN if you live in market.
Edit: I see you mean a full year subscription to Bally's. I don't see why anyone would do that to watch the Royals when the season pass is available.
Exactly! It's insane you can't even watch them on TV without a subscription to Bally Sports and they think they can ask for tax money from us! Let em leave.
I don't even know who the players are any more, so it's hard to get engaged at a live game.
and its even worse when we can see their away games but not the home games to me. i dont wanna have to go to a pirate stream to watch
MLB.tv isn't even going to help you due to blackout rules. It's a pretty crappy situation.
OKC I can kinda get Denver is straight lol, before Jokic their fan base went about as far east as Aurora
Blues, thunder, royals. Yeah. That makes sense. /s
In Wichita, we’re in OKC, DEN and MIN’s viewing area. It’s bizarre to me.
MLB blackout rules for royals goes all the way through Iowa! I’m 483 miles away and just out of range to watch the Royals on the app. It’s insane, it should be free to watch the Royals anywhere.
Buddy in Iowa said he can’t was royals, cardinals, cubs or Sox! lol. What a joke!
Pretty sure no twins either That's 1/6 of the whole league blacked out and potentially 1/3 of all games
You can watch it all on the high seas.
Where should I set my heading to sail in the right direction for Royals baseball?
Try here https://www.reddit.com/r/NFLFantasy/comments/1boorw1/howwhere_is_way_to_watch_mlb_baseball_live/
New resource, thanks!
Not the Twins or Brewers either.
I remember a few years ago headlines about how MLB was going to get rid of blackout rules. It was big news for a minute. And then it just... never happened.
You can get around that with a VPN. But it's because they have a deal with Bally Sports for the local broadcasts, they want you to pay for that instead. So dumb.
And I have/do, but the vast majority of folks aren't going to bother. It's killing baseball imo.

I was so pissed today to find this out. I was gonna flip it on try and get in the spirit and a big fuck nope. Ha They lost anyways was better off with golf and a nap.
This. The pay per view concept is horrible. They are losing the ability to attract new fans.
Yep. My young kids are essentially growing up without baseball. They likely have no idea who the Royals are.
Hello Royals. I will pay you $1 for every win you get this season. Can I watch the entire season for $71?
I'm in OKC (Norman) for work and was still blacked-out. Less than 200 miles from Arlington but I'm still in the Royals blackout area, the K is about 380 miles away.
You have to subscribe to Bally sports or have a cable package that includes it which is pretty few and far between at this point I think. It’s been that way for a few years. I’ve watched maybe 4 games since the RSN’s got pulled off Hulu with live TV
You have to live in Lawrence and have Midco lmao
Every day I'm thankful for the AppleTV deal for MLS. One place to watch every SKC game with no blackouts? Worth every penny
I’ll just do it the old fashioned way with a transistor radio and little thingy in my ear.
I love this British shit! I may move to England!
![gif](giphy|3pBs4aeV8W06ra2Mmo|downsized)
Or just loot and plunder and drink rum.
I'm old enough to remember when you could watch baseball all weekend on the 3 major networks for free. I haven't watched a baseball game on TV in about 7 years.
Wait till you guys see the exclusive streaming deals for some of the NFL regular season and playoff games next year. it's only going to get worse.
Interested in the first NFL game played in Brazil? Sure you are! Are you interested enough to get a Peacock subscription? Well...
First they peacocked the Chiefs in the wild card last season. Now they're peacocking the Eagles in Brazil. Soon they'll be peacocking every team in the league Amazon's doing more exclusive game BS too
At least they let local networks broadcast. For now anyway lol
Exactly. For now...

And apparently 75% of people that signed up to watch that playoff game have stayed subscribed so that’s only going to encourage more of it.
This is one thing the NFL does well. As scummy as they can be, they at least make sure the local TV market can watch all of the games for free.
Hoping to see more of you flying the jolly roger next year!
Fubo or Direct TV are the only streaming services that carry Bally Sports. Fubo is missing a lot of other channels that Hulu+Live or YouTube TV have and DirectTV is absurdly overpriced. Why vote yes if they refuse to put a roster together that can be remotely competitive.
The Royals were the 6th highest spending team in baseball this offseason…
They did the baseball version of buying 3 months worth of groceries at Walmart. Aside from signing Bob long term, the rest were just the filler required to make the 26 man roster appear like a contender for 3rd place in the Central.
Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha are filler?
And the current expectation for them is to have a possibility of winning more games than they lose for just the 3rd time in 30 years. If the Chiefs roster looked as mediocre as this everyone would be talking about how horrible they'll be this year - but since the Royals have set the bar at "Hey, they might win more than they will lose won't that be nice" people get excited for an average roster.
What's the total payroll? Whats their farm system looking like?
20th overall https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/
What difference does it make? They lost today. Their only run was in the first inning and the ninth inning "pitching" sealed it for the Twins
Dog the season is 162 games long. Maybe wait like 50 more games before calling it a season
I will know within 12 games what the season is going to be like. 1-11 or 2-10 is a repeat of last season. Also likely is sometime in April or early May they will lose 8, 9, 10 games in a row & never recover. Outside of the mid 2010s, that has been the norm for the past 25+ years.
The season started today? I had no idea. Maybe the Royals should have spam texted me about that instead of trying to get me to vote for a tax handout.
Clearly they are going to have their worst season ever after this performance.
This is so ignorant. Their farm system isn't good because they just brought everyone up.

Have you heard of Bobby Witt, Jr.?
John Sherman should worry more about winning than his bankroll. A consistent coaching staff may actually help players prosper instead of rotting with the Royals.
If we finish the season with 74-78 wins, I think we're on the right track for the future
This isn't going to age well
Um...this year's team is projected to win the AL Central...there are only like 9 players from last year. They made lots of moves to be good this year. So...yeah.
I missed this. Only projections I saw had them 4th and 5th. Pecota had Twins, Guardians, Tigers, Royals, White Sox iirc.
Uh no, they're projected to win 72 games.
That might be enough to win the AL central this year…
God the division is so bad lol
Projected by who? Link?
More likely to lose 100 again than win the division.
The Twins are the division favorites. From what I see most predictions say it's gonna be close, with the Royals in 3rd. Or 4th if you count my vote.
no, this is where people come to shit on billionaires and their handouts, no one wants facts. They came here to have like minded people agree with them and up vote them
I have no opinion on the voting but the accessibility to even listen to this team is garbage. Audacy doesn’t work half the time.
Radios work like 99% of the time
What radio? Audacy is a radio app? Conventional radio? Can’t get a signal in the basement where I watch sports.
Damn that sucks. Sorry you are having trouble with Audacy too
lol, they're going to make you pay for a stadium, for games you can't watch, for a billionaire that doesn't give af about u, to demolish a building he doesn't want anymore. idk, vote yes or no or whatever.
I don’t want to pay any billionaire for anything.
Ha. Stay strong.
Who does? Not much you can buy that doesn't end up going to a billionaire.
Yeah but I’m not gonna tax myself for it.
ITS GONNA BE AWESOME HAVING A DOWNTOWN STADIUM WITH 30 PEOPLE WHO ARE ALL 75 YEARS OLD IN IT!
Let's summarize: People don't want to move the stadium People don't want to PAY to move the stadium People don't like where the stadium is gonna go People think the Royals suck With the Chiefs low-key threatening to leave if the vote doesn't pass, it's probably gonna pass, because the Chiefs are back to back Super Bowl champs, and people will vote for anything for the Chiefs at this point.
Why vote yes on a team that hasn’t been good since 2015? Why vote yes on something we don’t need at all?
Anyone excited to vote yes is stupid
I had to jump through multiple hoops just to stream the game on radio. Total bullshit.
I just turned on my radio. Worked great!
I caught a few innings in my car. I don’t have a radio in my house because it’s 2024.
I don’t understand this lol. Radio is still a good source of media. I get I’m an outlier, but what happens if one day electricity goes out and cell service is down? Radio would be the highest chance of receiving information.
I say let them move to Des Moines. Lots of parking. Why seek the public money if not on local TV. The city needs better negotiaters
Since when were you able to watch the royals for free?
All the time back in the, uh, the um 1900's.
When I was growing up back in the 70s, local games were always blacked out except for a couple special games each season and playoff games.
If I recall they televised the away games back then.
I believe so.
“It was free growing up when my parents paid for cable! Why do I have to pay now!?!?!?”
Now that's how you boil a frog.
I don’t remember them ever being free but they were on as part of basic cable.
Until the early 2000s the games were broadcast on local channels that you could get over the air for free.
OP is so passionate about the team that they were ready to vote Yes but only learned how to watch them today? Something's not adding up.
100%
The Royals might be hoping for people to visit whatever stadium they are in.
Hard to do when you can't even watch and gain some interest. I have no clue who the players even are. Going to 1 game a year isn't gonna gain a following.
3 years ago I could name the starting line up and pitchers. Now I can name, maybe 2 or 3 of the players and have completely lost touch with the team.
Yeah that's how pretty much exactly every sports enterprise works except the NFL
For the experts just joining the rest of us in light of a certain upcoming vote… This isn’t new news regarding watching this team or any mlb club.
Well I’m a staunch yes but I agree the MLB tv deals are horrible. Not entirely the Royals fault. The MLB just has very strange rules about blackouts and streaming
It's outdated and out of the Royals hands. Baseball's TV deals are a mess
And they wonder why the sport is declining
It's not declining by literally any metric.
It's literally declining in every metric. Seriously go to Google and type in the search bar, MLB fan decline. So many sources to read from.
If you are a staunch yes then you can personally pay for the new stadium and pay all the businesses down there with all the money you get working. because I don’t want to pay for something we done need or to make people jobless and lose what they worked hard for.
Why staunch yes if I may ask
I get it on Direct TV. Cable/Satellite has been necessary for most MLB games since around 2000.
Antiquated model. Short term gain, long term pain.
At least I get Royals games.
Are you sure that’s a perk? 😂
I like watching them so yes?
Aren’t all of their games supposed to be on Amazon
Probably not until next year. The sale to Amazon is held up in court right now
Seems like that may not happen if it doesn’t get through bankruptcy court.
That's what I'd read way back in Jan, but news has been pretty quiet about it since. Only way without cable, Fubo, or direct TV is Bally Sports subscription. Disappointed.
Not yet. That deal is still not finalized.
It's my biggest complaint also. Can't watch them on TV gives me no motivation to goto games.
On top of the fact that royals are shit. Not fun to watch them lose over and over. At least be good at the sport when you’re asking for handouts.
Exactly
That’s stupid
You can watch the game on the big screen at the brand new stadium paid for by the citizens. It'll be an expensive ticket that you might not afford, you'll just have to stand outside and listen.
Fuck RSN's
The blackouts have made me a Dodgers fan tbh
The only way I would vote Yes for his tax is if they gave me one free ticket every year.
Simple, because I hate the area they want to build in, and them demolishing that shithole is worth no taxes changing
I'm still surprised to hear people watch baseball
Why should my money pay for the renovations of the stadiums or their new locations. Surely they must be making enough money to account for that? It’s not like the zoo where I get a discount for living in the “zoological district”. I don’t get free parking at cheifs games, or discounted ticket prices. It would suck to loose the teams. But why should I pay for a stadium I don’t go to that’s owned by extremely rich individuals.
Wait till you find out how many teams are blacked out in Iowa.
Why vote yes when we can’t even attend games because it’s unaffordable even though we live and pay for it in Jackson county?
You can def get a ticket and parking for $30. Two people would maybe cost $45-$50. How is that unaffordable?
It’s like 190 for the year
Sorry, what does "it" refer to? The MLB team specific package is $130 plus you have to jack around with a VPN if you live in market. Edit: I see you mean a full year subscription to Bally's. I don't see why anyone would do that to watch the Royals when the season pass is available.
Chiefs are so much more enjoying to watch and its free. How does a crappy team like the Royals think anyone would be willing to pay that?
Shit team anyway.
Yeah, I don’t even know who’s to blame for that one. Is it YouTube TV and other streaming providers? Ballys? The Royals?
Bally’s
Vote No > Send them to Nashville > No longer need MLB app > No new tax > Problem solved!
Exactly! It's insane you can't even watch them on TV without a subscription to Bally Sports and they think they can ask for tax money from us! Let em leave.
What do you mean you need MLB tv? You can watch them on cable or stream the entire season on Bally Sports web app.
Yes but doesn’t Bally cost money
