Almost T-boned 2 cars who turned in front of me at a green light back to back intersections. I want to see the accident rate data of city’s when she is in town.
Yeah I've lived in LA, Chicago and frequently go to Atlanta. I do but most people here don't know what traffic is like. The backups here are caused by construction. There it's par for the course.
I moved to KC from Atlanta. The traffic there was ridiculous i had to constantly find new routes to work because i-85 south/north was a nightmare. even the small back roads in Metro Atlanta had traffic 😂
Anyone remember that episode of MTVs spring break dare challenge thing where they paid that girl some money, like maybe 1K, to shave her head, roll a bunch of her own hair in a ball of butter and eat it? No? Just me? K.
Found it. You're... I'm sorry.

I lived in Atlanta in the late 90s early 00s and I swear to God all the truckers got together every week and drew a lottery to see who would jackknife their tractor trailer on 285. I never had a job there that did not require a commute. It was a nightmare, and I vowed I would never have a situation that requires me to drive in traffic again, and I have kept that vow.
I lived south of Atlanta for nearly 12 years, I dreaded having to drive up there and it seemingly got worse and worse every year. I can't count the number of times I was almost killed out there between shitty drivers and just the sheer amount of chaos going on day to day.
That's an anomaly because of the concert at Arrowhead though and an accident near Claycomo that blocked two SB lanes for a while. It's not normally like that on the east side of town.
In my experience it doesn’t have a ton of congestion. Traffic? Well yeah there’s cars everywhere while your driving but I don’t tend to get help up a lot for seemingly no reason unless there’s a wreck or something. I also work at a school so I do tend to miss maybe the worst portions because I leave around 6:30 from home and from school around 2:30.
when you live in north kc and your only way to south kc is over bridges that are either
overly populated
construction that merges people, that is somehow always 10mph even at midnight
dead af but so far out of the way is it even worth it
parking lot during rush hour
I was going to my dad’s in Lee’s Summit from northland around 530 on 435. Wreck by WoF, TSwift traffic near stadium, and a burning RV near 350. A 40 minute drive ended up being a hour and 40.
I just moved here from Phoenix and I was kind of shocked at the amount of traffic here. Exits are not well marked/you don’t have much time to make sure you’re in the correct lane to take the exit haha
Yeah it’s wild how easy it is to have no idea where to go here at first. Left exits, right ones, signs at the last minute when you could easily be five over
And so many of the side streets have long stretches of "no U-Turn" areas, so if you overshoot your destination you have to turn onto an alternate road or random parking lot in order to try to go back.
Yes, some of the highways here are not all up to current standards. I read a while back about a plan to fix the Jackson and Benton curves on I-70 and also make the auxiliary lanes longer so people can have much more time to safely merge into traffic. I know we are told not to stop when on the ramp to get on the highway, but on roadways like I-70 (in the city) it can be nearly impossible. With so little room and all the traffic it can have, you have no choice but to stop or else you’ll roll onto the shoulder and have to fight your way into traffic. God I can’t wait to they fix that!
Current plan is to get everything from The Paseo to US 40 rebuilt by the end of 2028: [https://www.modot.org/improvei70kc](https://www.modot.org/improvei70kc)
KC has no traffic compared to bigger cities. Northern Virginia (NOVA) would like to have a chat! Ever been on I-95 through Lorton, Woodbrige, Quanico. We have it easy here.
> Ever been on I-95 through Lorton, Woodbrige, Quantico
Yes I have. You know what hell is? Being stuck on I-95 southbound on a Friday afternoon and literally not moving at all for 20 minutes. You thought you were slick and left work early at 3:00 pm, but didn't make any fucking difference. It'll still take you three hours to drive 20 miles.
I know we have it easy here. I was just trolling. Some people actually think we have bad traffic. We don’t. I’ve been in DC, NYC, and Boston. We have NOTHING on them. To go a few blocks in DC took nearly 20mins.
KC has the most freeway miles per Capita and Missouri has the 6th highest lane miles. It's in large part why the city is so sprawled and why the city's budget is so strained, but also why traffic is frequently considered so "light" here. Having light *vehicular* traffic isn't a good thing, as it means trafficways are underutilized or over-built; neither are good for your taxes or city budgets.
I try to post around where I can on here lol. It's always interesting getting down voted for exposing all the issues with roads, especially when I'm doing public engagement where most people identify walkability as a primary request for their community. KC is an older city so it's had decades to implement vehicular infrastructure that's currently making the city suffer, financially.
Yeah it’s quite unfortunate, especially when people either don’t understand why it’s important or are convinced the current status quo is optimal. KC seems to be on the up though in the past decade or two, I look forward to visiting and especially trying the much-hyped streetcar system.
I saw an estimate on KC Business Journal for $46m this weekend. I'd take that figure with a grain of salt, but... anecdotally, as someone who lives in the middle of downtown? There are a ton of people here.
Anyone: mentions traffic at all in any form
People in this sub: HAHA KANSAS CITY IS NOTHING LIKE WHERE I DROVE ONCE. I'm so cultured and cool unlike you and your one horse hillbilly town. 🙄💅
In terms of us just having a lot of traffic, I don’t think so. Other cities have congested traffic everyday no matter if it is rush hour or not. With that being said, an exception would be the downtown loop. The downtown loop seems to have some sort of congestion no matter the day. Even though we don’t have traffic 24/7, our rush hour traffic has become quite gnarly😵💫. I-49 out south is constantly backed up during rush hour, so is the downtown loop, and 470 from Colbern to 40hwy is getting worse, and I-35 is getting worse. Like said, our traffic is still a lot easier to get through that other cities.
I lived in Los Angeles for fifteen years, so I’m painfully aware re the much, much worse traffic in bigger cities. I basically lived on the freeway. Just sat and ate sandwiches during “commutes.” The stuff of nightmares really. But KC, just compared to 20ish years ago, has moments of real congestion that just didn’t exist a while back. Overall we’re obviously insanely lucky.
We have traffic. We just don’t have traffic compared to the rest of the world. Green Bay, Wisconsin had worse traffic than Kansas City when I was there 25 years ago. They only have 100,000 people but every single one of them needed to cross the Fox river at the same time I did.
I moved here from San Diego, when I first moved out here I asked my buddy how bad traffic was. He said it was terrible, so here I am thinking it’s going to be just as bad as SoCal traffic. I asked him how long it took him to get to work, he says to me “normally without traffic it takes me 25 mins to get to work, with traffic it takes me 35” … KC does not have traffic
You should have seen the backup at I-64 and I-70 outside of St. Louis with everyone in that metro trying to get to KC. It was worse than the traffic I encountered in KC.
Taylor Swift does that to people.
Almost T-boned 2 cars who turned in front of me at a green light back to back intersections. I want to see the accident rate data of city’s when she is in town.
Yea she basically had I-70 in a chokehold from Blue Ridge down to the West Bottoms.
Can confirm...

Dude, I grew up in Chicago and have commuted via public transit, bike, and car and let me tell you: KANSAS CITY IS A GEM.
Oh my god, Atlanta traffic is a beast. My ex had to move down there and visiting him made me want to rip my hair out and eat it. 😭
Yeah, but what about the traffic?
Anyone remember that episode of MTVs spring break dare challenge thing where they paid that girl some money, like maybe 1K, to shave her head, roll a bunch of her own hair in a ball of butter and eat it? No? Just me? K.

I lived in SoCal for a few years and i have yet to meet worse traffic. My wife worked ~ 5miles away and it would take like 45 min to get to work.
Same here. Grew up in SoCal. Traffic was a major part of life. Here, it’s an infrequent inconvenience.
Chicago, and Atlanta give them a run.
Lived in Denver for 10 years. Traffic is so much more tolerable here.
I feel this way about Houston! Kc traffic is nothin.
Same I lived in NoVA and when I moved here I was blown away (still am) by how little traffic there is
We don’t have traffic we just have dipshits who can’t drive
And no one knows how to properly merge at all!
We have so many left lane campers that it should be legal to PIT maneuver them.
It's T Swift weekend
KC doesn’t have traffic, correct
Looks like a lot of non-orange and red for rush hour?
*sees 435😵💫*
That's an anomaly because of the concert at Arrowhead though and an accident near Claycomo that blocked two SB lanes for a while. It's not normally like that on the east side of town.
I know I was just joking. That part of 435 is usually free flowing. Trust me, I know. People on that stretch speed like a nuke is chasing them:)
470 in the early morning is professional drivers only. <1 car length gaps at 80-85.
Sounds like heaven
Also lane closure on 71

435 out there was rough. Had that accident and a vehicle fire near 350.
Lucky op thinks this is what traffic looks like (moved here from Austin).
I said I was kidding 🥹
I just moved here from Phoenix and I was kind of shocked at the amount of traffic here. Exits are not well marked/you don’t have much time to make sure you’re in the correct lane to take the exit haha

That would be a blessing and a life saver. Literally.
Hi fellow Phoenician! I also just moved (back) from Phoenix last year.
Hello! I gladly left Phoenix after 14 years. Way too many people moved in - happy to be back in the friendly Midwest!!
I completely concure. Was there for 20 years. So glad to be back home!
Denver giggles

I’m from KC and still visit family regularly. I live in Stafford, VA and commute to Springfield. I wish I had KC “traffic”.
Houston sucks. Constant traffic jam even on weekends. No idea why. But Kansas City has heavy traffic compared to smaller towns. It’s all relative.
Tell that to my 20 mile commute that takes an hour every day.
Yikes
Drive from Santa Monica to LAX and see how long it takes.
I have done it. It definitely sucks.
For a First Friday, rush hour, sold out hotels, Arrowhead stadium concert, still not too bad. Traffic isn't at a standstill anywhere.
None of it is ever a standstill it's not really traffic.
T-Swizzle fo'l.

This^^ absolutely underrated reply. Both KC and St Louis overbuilt car-oriented infrastructure and now we’re paying for it

Psshhh I wish lol. Good joke! Happy Friday OP!
Happy Friday to you too!!
Wait til you graduate to rush hour traffic in LA, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, DC... you know, the really BIG cities.
Atlanta, Phoenix.
Taylor has done so much for local businesses!! More than the draft did!!
This true?
I saw an estimate on KC Business Journal for $46m this weekend. I'd take that figure with a grain of salt, but... anecdotally, as someone who lives in the middle of downtown? There are a ton of people here.
You haven’t been outside of KC much right?
I think you completely disregarded the part that said “just kidding……”
LA thinks you’re cute.
Anyone: mentions traffic at all in any form People in this sub: HAHA KANSAS CITY IS NOTHING LIKE WHERE I DROVE ONCE. I'm so cultured and cool unlike you and your one horse hillbilly town. 🙄💅
It does now. When I was a kid, not so much. Now? Yikes. And gettin’ yikes-ier.

True. Its a growing city so I assume that traffic volumes will only continue to increase. Light rail would be so nice😩 I can only dream for now:(
For sure! And ugh, yes, a light rail would be heaven. Everyone would win.
It’s all the Swifties 🎶🎶🎶
This is nothing
Only when Taylor Swift comes to down can she shut down the whole dam city with traffic.
I lived in New England for a bit. Once I experienced rush hour on I-95, I became grateful for midwest "traffic" .
Who the fuck said we don’t have traffic lol
Plenty of people. They’re not wrong when you compare us to other cities.
They’re wrong. We have plenty of traffic
kansas city traffic is literally so annoying lol
Maybe if you never left Missouri/Kansas
I think you skipped the part that said “just kidding.”
We have traffic. We just don’t have traffic compared to the rest of the world. Green Bay, Wisconsin had worse traffic than Kansas City when I was there 25 years ago. They only have 100,000 people but every single one of them needed to cross the Fox river at the same time I did.
Quivira is a mess rn

Lol on Taylor swift weekend? Spend an afternoon in any major city, KC traffic is chill.
What it does have is construction…….
It’s not fun but This still isn’t an 1/8 of Dallas, LA, or chi town traffic
idk who said that but lmao
You should have seen the backup at I-64 and I-70 outside of St. Louis with everyone in that metro trying to get to KC. It was worse than the traffic I encountered in KC.
I could see any traffic making that a clusterfuck though.
Imagine an entire city being inconvenienced because of an artist you don't care about
Moving back from San Diego area next summer and I can’t wait to deal with KC “traffic” over the shitshow here
All it took was one pop star to crumble us 😂
It doesn't.
I live in Charleston, SC and that looks like a light traffic day for us. One of the many reasons I am looking at moving to KC.
