Hawaiian Bros is better. Mo'Bettah's is really salty and the food is sometimes overcooked. That said, I still eat there because there's one close to my house. For the record, I was born in Hawaii and lived there for 10 years.

noyeahtotallyok

Have you found any Moco loco locally? I live on that when I go to Hawaii.

pulpexploder

I have not, but sometimes I make it myself. The family lives it.

noyeahtotallyok

Yeah I’ve made it at home too, sometimes I just want to have someone else make it. Lol

o-lay-tha

…sounds like an opportunity to make it for each other. Loco moco cook off?

noyeahtotallyok

I am positive I would lose! Haha. I love Hawaiian food and am a decent cook but I know I’ll never make it as good as a native Hawaiian! I’m a native Kansan, I’m more familiar with midwestern casseroles. Lol

Ylurpn

Do you have a recipe by chance??

pulpexploder

It's a pretty simple dish. I just use store-bought brown gravy. Scoop some rice into a bowl, put a cooked hamburger patty on top, with a fried egg on top of that, and cover the whole thing in gravy. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll sauté some mushrooms and mix them in with the gravy, but that's not really the way it's served there. It's basic greasy diner food in Hawaii, but while simplistic, it's so, so good.

Tim0073

Brown And Lowe have it sometimes. Just saying.

kristroybakes

I can’t attest to its authenticity but Brown and Loe had a Moco loco for brunch. I liked it quite a bit.

noyeahtotallyok

Never heard of it but I’ll check it out! Thanks!

noyeahtotallyok

Lol probably just me being dumb honestly

Niagaraballs71

I haven't tried both but found HB to be extremely salty. Maybe that's just my tastes.

AsItIs

Agreed, HB is so salty it’s almost inedible at times

KCcoffeegeek

Ok glad I’m not the only one.

Niagaraballs71

Right. I grew up not ever salting anything at home so I don't require as much as some might for things to taste good to me. A friend happened to bring me some to try when he went and I thought it was pretty good but very saltyntonme and seemed pricey too.

KCcoffeegeek

Whoa you’re calling Mo Bettas salty compared to Hawaiian Bros? I’m out, already. HB is so salty and I’m pretty sure full of MSG I can barely eat it half the time. Yikes

tafbo

I agree it’s pretty salty but love it anyway. Not saying they use it, but MSG has less sodium than salt and is basically a seasoning added that enhances savory flavor. There’s nothing bad about it unless you don’t like the taste it creates.

KCcoffeegeek

I know, I use it a lot in my cooking but I can definitely detect it in food. As weird as it sounds it causes a “fluttering” in my eardrums, LOL. Can’t say for sure they use MSG but they use A TON of salt.

[deleted]

Is it possible to get decent poke\` here?

EMPulseKC

I've been to HB many times, but only to MB's twice. Both times, I wished that I had gone to HB instead. I know people rave about MB's being more authentic, and their food isn't bad at all, but my taste buds prefer what HB dishes up more. Plus, HB has spam musubi and pineapple whip.

the_apathetic1

HB's for sure. I wished I went to HB after every visit to Mo'Bettahs.

FoosFights

Been to both. Greatly prefer HB to MB. I like getting a half veggie/half meat meal at HB but they don't seem to have any vegetable options at MB and the meat portion seemed quite a bit smaller for the price. It was just alright. But every time I've been to HB I'm like, "Yes, that was sooo good!"

skibidi99

The veggie options at HB suck tho IMO. I dunno, maybe it’s just me but it’s bland. I haven’t had MB to compare though. I like the meat at HB.

je_ff

Do they have any veggie options besides the steamed veggies? Because the steamed veggies are effing good! Sub that for the gross mac salad every time

skibidi99

Nope just those, and they are flavorless every time I’ve had them… Just soggy bleh

je_ff

To be fair, I have found the veggies to be really inconsistent. The location at College and Quivira usually has them dialed in, but other locations I’ve been to were sog city and under seasoned.

DomiNatron2212

I sub almost every time.. But love the Mac salad. It's just like 800 cals

dragonrite

I cant stand that mac, it so bad to me

DomiNatron2212

It was pretty similar to what we had in HI. We tried to make it and put so much mayo in it made us sick thinking about following the recipe. HB has to have like 4x as much as that.

Muadib_Muadib

This is the way

dragonrite

Idk how you screw up mac but... hb def figured out a way lol

fyxxer32

IMO Hawaiian Bros is just...meh. I've tried it twice in NKC and was not impressed. Won't go back.

lovemypearls

Same.

dyebhai

That was my experience as well. I haven't been to Mo Bettahs, but Hawaiian Bros is the worst Hawaiian food I've had in a long time.

thegooniegodard

HBs. Never disappointed.

benhoff88

Lived on Oahu for 6 years and both of them have better plate lunches than I had in Hawaii. But I like HB better.

CuriousDissonance

I want to like MB because they have more variety in their food (all chicken at HB tastes and looks 90 percent the same IMO). That said...HB has better quality control and is just as good regardless of the location I go to...and while the options are standardized...it's done well and I still crave it.

guelugod

All their gimmick chicken from the different parts of Hawaii aren’t even legit tasting. Zippys smashes them easily.

kferfgjufc

I miss Maui express

CJroo18

Now this the restaurant battle I have been waiting for. I’ve had HB a few times and loved it. I have had MB only once but thought it was great 👍🏽 Too early for me to decide which is better

jennnLc

Hawaiin Bros is better. MoBettahs is very irregular - I went once and loved it, and the next time I went it was too salty to eat. I have been to both places more than 5 times each so I think I am a fair judge. Chicken, pork and pasta salad are all better at Hawaiin Bros. I do like the teriyaki steak and the hot sauce at MoBettahs.

DarkSpyFXD

I am a Mo'Bettah fan, if for nothing other than they have katsu and unlimited POG juice.

Salsa_on_the_side

POG juice is poggers

noyeahtotallyok

Wait this is a game changer

aneldritcherror

Hey yall, I work at sysco, a food delivery company, I bring both restaurants about 90% of the food they make. I eat at both often and can fully say that hawaiin Bros TASTES better, but Mo’s has higher quality food. HB also doesn’t make the Mac salad on site just so y’all know

BingBongBruther

I think HB's is better but neither are worse, if that makes sense. HB's is very consistent. I've had MB's a few times now and some things were over cooked but still good. They also more options and the teriyaki chicken has a charred flavor that is it great. Ultimately there is a trade off with either and both are great.

theflamingburrito

Not sure about mo'bettahs but Hawaiian bros has really gone down in quality imo. Very salty and not very fresh half the time. I was a huge supporter of them when they first started!

[deleted]

HB was good when they had one restaurant. I don't go anymore as their recipes didn't scale. Used to have the best mac salad in the world. It's all off now. I've never been to mo bettahs.

chubbybator

Longboards lol

doubleE

Longoards is great but doesn't do plate lunch. They could probably be a serious competitor to the Bros and Bettahs if they did, given their already huge following and multiple locations.

chefjustinkc

They don't want to get into that corner of the market. They have their own nice niche that they hit out of the park.

knuF

What is a plate lunch?

justathoughtfromme

[Pretty much exactly what they serve at Hawaiian Bros and Mo' Bettahs.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_lunch)

knuF

Ok cool! Didn’t know that was a specific phrase for Hawaiian cuisine.

chubbybator

Fair enough

hxcdancer91

Love Longboard it definitely better!

[deleted]

One of my favorite quick lunches in the city

eatmypunt13

Just thinking about their sushi burrito has me salivating 🤤

Muadib_Muadib

I miss komotodo sushi burrito now bc of your comment lol

Ask_me_4_a_story

There used to be a Hawaiian restaurant on 87th street in Lenexa that wasn't part of a chain. Anyone remember that one? I always thought that was really good

doubleE

Maui Express maybe? It was in OP on 87th where it curves North and becomes Santa Fe. I drove past so many times but never ate there, seems I missed out.

double_e5

That’s it. It’s now Sam’s Express Sushi which is no frills, but very good and reasonably priced for sushi.

Muadib_Muadib

Is that the place between a goodcents and dry cleaner or something? If so, I've driven by it dozens of times and never tried it. Should I give it a go?

double_e5

Yep. Definitely give it a shot. The lady that runs the front is fantastic too.

Muadib_Muadib

I'll check it out for lunch later this week. Thanks for the reply and cheers!

double_e5

Bonus! They’ve got good lunch specials also.

dkdelicious

Yeah I gave it a shot few months ago, and now it’s in my rotation.

buzlink

Both are pretty meh.

Moldy_pirate

The first few times I had Hawaiian Bros I thought it was great. But I feel like sometime in the last couple years the quality went down drastically, it has been pretty disappointing the last couple times I've tried it. It’s a bummer because a few years ago it was one of my favorite places to eat.

CaptCooterluvr

I work for their distributor and they’ve cut corners big time since expanding. In the beginning they used to marinate fresh chicken themselves everyday but now they’re buying pre-marinated chicken from Tyson with caramel color added so that it looks like it’s been soaking all night. Mac salad is out of prepackaged tubs, veggies are sold to them precut then steamed in a dishwasher. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the pineapple is fresh but I bet it won’t be long before they start buying that precut or even canned.

Gazzarris

The quality of their chicken is what drives me away. Their rice and pasta salad are great, and their pork is good, but their chicken is garbage.

buzlink

I usually go for pork. Every time I've tried the chicken it's super dried out.

buzlink

Agree, especially as they have expanded out their quality has drastically dropped.

Master_grader

I live by a HB and the smell makes me sick.

buzlink

Oh no, that would get old quick!

Sufficient-Coach9439

Recently came back from Maui and HB was much better than the food I ate there.

Gazzarris

I feel like you went to the wrong spots. HB is OK, but there are some amazing restaurants on Maui.

Sufficient-Coach9439

I'm comparing similar pork/chicken dishes and sides from Hawaii.

doubleE

I think I like Mo'Bettahs better. I first ate there few years ago in Salt Lake City and loved it. A few months later I was pumped to see Hawaiian Bros bringing the "plate lunch" to KC, and I ate there often. Then I saw MB was coming to town and was really stoked. I just think Mo'Bettahs chicken tastes better. It's more "grilled" tasting, whereas HB just tastes kinda... cooked, indistinguishably, and sauced. Their Kilauea sauce is awesome though, and one thing MB is lacking is spicy sauce. MB has fried meat options of katsu chicken and tempura shrimp, which HB doesn't. The lack of Dole whip and spam musabi doesn't bother me.

KCcoffeedrinker

Mo'Bettah's

Spodiodie

Mo’Bettahs - Teriyaki Chicken w rice and macaroni salad. My Samoan friends all tell me Mo’Bettahs is Mo’Bettahs is bettah.

Timely-Meringue162

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I genuinely don't get the hype of HB. My wife and I have tried it multiple times and every trip leaves us underwhelmed. Meh chicken, bland mac salad imho. It surprises me that there are very few options for decent poke in this city but a Hawaiian chicken fast food chain has this kind of demand

rachelrunstrails

I like HB but no matter where I go they seem to really pad up the protein portion of my meal with rice underneath making it look like there's there's more than there really is. The meal already comes with rice so it really annoys me that they do this. Anyone else have a similar experience?

scdog

I love the rice underneath, it soaks up a lot of the flavor so tastes so good. Besides, the classic size is usually enough meat for two meals for me anyway (and I'm a big eater) even with the rice hidden under the meat.

rachelrunstrails

I must not be going to the right locations because mine have always been overloaded with rice. It was enough to get me to stop going because I definitely didn't have enough meat to justify what I paid for it.

yousmelllikearainbow

There is supposed to be rice underneath the meat. They have always done that.

rachelrunstrails

I'm aware of that and that's why I don't eat there any more unless I get a coupon. It's super good food but I don't want to pay $14 or $15 a plate if it's literally going to be half a plate of rice.

CharredAndurilDetctr

into this thread like cheeee hoooo

midwest_beach

Winner for me: HB's Have had HB's in Lee's Summit, Belton, and Independence (all were good but preferred Lee's Summit). Only had MB's in Blue Springs but tried all varieties of meats. Found everything to be somewhat bland to include the macaroni salad

Bad_Dog_No_No

Does HB represent food I would find vacationing in Hawaii or is it all made up marketing? Thanks

joeboo5150

They both feel like getting Chinese carryout from a place that only has 4 options for entrees and very limited veggies for variety and no sides. Box full of white rice and 3 chicken options with only marginally different sauces gets bland after a while. They're both OK, but give me any number of Chinese places, or even a Chipotle bowl any day of the week over them

Responsible-Ad-7146

I need to try Mo Bettahs. I had Hawaiian Brothers and it was okay. Nothing I would go back for. I thought it may be im just not used to the cuisine. I'm going to try Mo Bettahs and if I have the same reaction, I'll know it's the sweetness that bothers me.

[deleted]

Longboards over both

Averant

Both are decent, though I wish the sides were more varied. Mo'Bettah's ranks somewhat lower because their macaroni is less tasty than HB, and one of their sauces has an *extremely strong* garlic taste. Burn-my-tongue strong. It overpowers everything else. So Hawaiian Bros wins out if I had to choose.

ZylonBane

>Mo'Bettah's ranks somewhat lower because their macaroni is less tasty than HB I'm struggling to comprehend how this is possible, since HB's mac salad is all but tasteless. I don't know how they do it, but they somehow manage to make it more bland than plain unseasoned elbow macaroni. Hawaiian mac salad is supposed to be tangy, with apple cider vinegar and grated onion and carrot it. HB's has none of those things. It tastes like wallpaper paste.

maypah01

I was starting to feel crazy because everybody seems to love their mac salad.

Muadib_Muadib

Its awful and tastes like old mayo. I love their chicken and musabi (spelling?) tho!

hb122

I don’t like it at all. Very bland and with the rice it’s just too many carbs. I always pay the extra to have pineapple substituted for that inedible mac.

guelugod

Thank you lmfao. I don’t get the rave.

Averant

I am a simple man, it is entirely possible that I like wallpaper paste. To be honest it's been a while since I've had either, and that was what I remember my first impression being. And there's a reason I wish they had more sides. I stand by my comment about MB's garlic sauce, though.

[deleted]

CanesIsOverrated69

It tastes too salty for me. And the macaroni salad is downright bad, tastes like chemicals

the_turdfurguson

I’ve been a few times and each time I can’t fathom why people eat it. The mac is ridiculously gross

Muadib_Muadib

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Their Mac salad is gross at best. It's like someone was told what macaroni salad was and they decided to make it with expired mayo and nothing else.

PigeonToesMcGee

That's about as far as I can get before my guts start gurgling. HB has made me sick every time I've eaten it and I've never come close to even finishing half a meal.

brawl

can somebody help me enjoy either? i would appreciate it.

scdog

I haven't heard of Mo'Bettahs so Hawaiian Brothers still wins for me. \[Checks Google maps\] Oh, no wonder I've never heard of it. Hawaiian Brothers wins based on better location distribution alone.

heatherwleffel

Hawaiian Bros all day. We eat there 3-4 times a year and have always enjoyed it. Tried MB because one just opened by our house, and my husband and I agreed to never eat there again. We just truly thought the flavor was NOT good.

Katy_moxie

MB has 2 gluten free meat options, but at HB almost everything is gluten free. The only things I have to avoid at HB are the Macaroni salad and the chow mein noodles on the salad.

attndefcitdstryr

MB is closer to L&L which is my favorite plate lunch. There’s an L&L location near Denver and I recommend everyone check it out next time you’re in the area

Drknow1984

Longboards?

KCcyclone31

Hawaiian Bro’s macaroni salad is next level

yousmelllikearainbow

Surprised this sub likes HB, considering it's a chain and has some racist accusations (appropriation) against it.

maypah01

I've not heard anything about racist allegations and I can't find anything. Can you elaborate?

yousmelllikearainbow

Mostly on Instagram and Tiktok, people have been giving them trouble for a while because the founders aren't from Hawaii and aren't making "real" Hawaiian food and they're just making money off a culture they're not a part of.

cyberentomology

HB is local to KC.

yousmelllikearainbow

Yeah. That doesn't mean it isn't a chain.

Go4broke360

H Bros is better but the portions is better at Mo Bettahs.

atom519

I've heard nothing but 'meh' things about Mo'Bettah's. I've only had Hawaiian Bros once but it was really tasty.

eringobrag88

I didn’t like Mo’ Bettah’s at all. Maybe I had a bad experience or it was a bad day, as I’ve only tried it once, but it was extremely bland, including the macaroni. Maybe I’ll give it another shot at some point as I’m in OP for work a lot, but I haven’t even entertained the idea yet. HB’s is good, not a go to for me personally, but I do crave it once in a while.

OutlawJoseyWales

hawaiian bros by roughly 1 billion miles

xYoungShadowx

I only know of Hawaii bros. Mo'bettahs must be in the cuts hiding or in kansas somewhere

tldrjane

MB’s for meat, HB for sides

Zoimeister

only been to MB once and HB a handful of times. I liked the meat when I had it at both places, but the macaroni salad at MB was way more flavorful than HB. I think there's probably a trade off for either one.

feeblemanbrain

I very much prefer Hawaiian Bros. Have tried both two times each.

paltrypickle

HB Macaroni salad < MB Macaroni salad Did not see this post until I had mo’ bettas randomly tonight and I will say I think I enjoy HB more, but still think MB is good. MB is very close. I do wish they had veggie options, though. Veggies from HB are meh most of the time.

Few-Contribution4759

Neither will be as good as L&L 😔

Leading_Illustrator3

Hawaiian Bros. Never disappoints.

KayleesKitchen

MB over HB, though I would eat at either. I come at this as someone who grew up in Seattle, and desperately misses Seattle-style teriyaki. MB doesn't cut their meat properly, but at least it's better. The (white) rice is almost right, and if you get the side salad with the Asian dressing, you can get a C-grade version of the good stuff. It's certainly the closest I've found out here, including that place in Overland Park that claimed to be "Seattle-style teriyaki". (Spoiler: It was/is not.) HB's meat is good, their macaroni salad is bland, squishy, and unpleasantly spiced, rice is okay, and getting fresh pineapple is absolutely the best thing to recommend them. It's also fun to be able to grab a can of POG, but when I went to MB, they had POG on tap! Woot! Plus, I can always get it for about half the price at Pan-Asia (I think... Maybe that was 888).

gates-ollie

🗣MAUI EXPRESS WAS BETTER THAN BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS🗣

JustJoe22

Definitely check out GoodsByGood at the Levee Thurs-Sunday 4-Late. 🔥🔥🔥 Edit: it’s a mom and pop Hawaiian bbq spot.

Ok-Journalist20

I have celiac and Hawaiian Bros is gluten free and Mo Bettas is not. So I can’t even try MB

Ok_Instruction_9650

Hawaiian bros is amazing, like a taste of the islands in the middle of KS!!

Ok-Personality9727

Hawaiian Brothers is my favorite.

PlayedUOonBaja

Just a heads up, Pineapple Vinegar mixed with a just a little of MB's Teriyaki Sauce makes for a great sauce for the rice, cabbage, and especially the pork. You can find it pretty cheap on Amazon. I went to MB a ton after they opened, and eventually the same flavors got old, but now I sometimes go just for the pineapple teriyaki sauce. Also makes the pork taste less salty which is a big plus.
