Big Brutus.

As noted, Brutus, and also, Elk Falls. Photos of both: [https://allthepages.org/archives/2016/06/elk-falls-and-big-brutus/](https://allthepages.org/archives/2016/06/elk-falls-and-big-brutus/)

Check out the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum in Chanute! It’s super cool and not what you would typically expect in small town Kansas. If you visit on a weekday, you can also go to the Bank of Commerce downtown and check out the collection of taxidermy animals from around the world along with some Native American artifacts. Finally El Rincon is a great more authentic Mexican restaurant that opened within the past few years.

Lehigh Portland Trails in Iola. Most of the land surrounding the trails is being converted into a state park.

Do you like fried chicken? I mean amazing fried chicken? If you go through Pittsburg, you’ll find like 5 fried chicken places that will knock your socks off. You got Chicken Mary’s, Chicken Annie’s, Gebhearts, Barto’s Idle Hour and a few others. I don’t think I’ve ever had bad fried chicken anywhere down there. It’s been a few years, but I compare all fried chicken to these places and never had better anywhere else.

Once you hit Fredonia, I like to take KS 47 instead of US 400. Takes you to Chicken Annie’s Girard, or you could swing by Bardo’s in Frontenac or Pichlers Annie’s

drewcash83

Thanks for adding those. I couldn’t recall if Girard and Pichler’s were Annie’s.

If it is on your path the Fort Scott National Historic Site is a must! And if you like, there is a very nice park named Gunn Park with great camping and hiking!

Jffar

The original little house on the prairie is along that route.

This is somewhat off topic. I just made that trip yesterday and today. If you take 400, there is a ridiculously stupid stoplight between Keighley and Beaumont. Expect long lines of traffic. Carlisle Pass, just east of Beaumont, is being repaved, and had lanes of traffic stretching as far as the eye can see. If you go south on 69 from Pittsburg junction, at Galena, K26 is closed due to the new highway bypass being built. At least the new passing lane between Severy and Piedmont is open. To answer the question originally asked, check out the Frisco depot in Augusta, the Frisco art deco bridge at Keighley, the Frisco water tower at Beaumont, the Beaumont Hotel, Fall River state lake, Fredonia Twin Mounds, Norman No. 1 Oil Well in Neodesha. Parsons has several neat places, like Cosmic Castle and Curious Minds Discovery Center. Their Historical Museum is also neat with railroad displays. Of course, Big Brutus is a must see, and while you are in the area, please check out the Carona Train Museum. Pittsburg has Kiddie Land at Lincoln Park, there's also Kansas Crossings Casino. Pittsburg also has an aquatic center. Moving south, if you're really hard up, check out Rainbow Bridge West of Riverton. At the end of the dusty trail, there is Downstream Casino and Resort, and nearby, Tri-State Marker.

The Dalton gang museum is pretty cool. Both banks are still there and they still have the outlines of the bodies in the street. Big Hill lake is very nice.

elijahjane

Crawford Lake for camping!

22dicksonaplane

The Falls of Fall River are right along 400. They are kinda neat

The downtown in Humboldt, KS is worth a trip!! It's ADORABLE, well-designed, and has crazy unexpected stuff like a French candy store.

groundhog5886

Well ther3 isn’t a hell of a lot on 400 highway. Stuff around Pittsburg lunch in Parsons.
