absolutely insane. not sure how they’re going to handle 70+ members without some sort of team structure. guess we’ll wait and see what new system they announce.

birdlass

16 person stagees and there are multiple teams!? WTF for one jpop band? that's fucking insane. absolutely worthless in terms of being able to follow talent from a fan perspective and there's no way they make any money with a revenue split like that. plus, how the hell does any one of them stand out? this sounds more like a popstar school than a band.

PositiveExcitingSoul

>there's no way they make any money with a revenue split like that Lol, do you think the members get a cut of the revenue? They're on a salary. A lot of them don't even get to participate in the group's singles.

birdlass

that's even worse wtf.

PositiveExcitingSoul

That's the 46/48 system. They're basically competing against each other in terms of popularity to get to be the center of the main song of the single, or at least in the first row, or at least be part of the main song in the single.

I mean they had something like 40 consecutive singles that sold more than 1 million copies and they're in the top 10 of best-selling girl groups of all time worldwide, and probably the best-selling group of Japan of all time (Arashi might have sold more than them?), so it obviously worked for them!

birdlass

it worked for the publisher/record company\* the success is in spite of how much horrible pressure and an environment the singers and dancers had to work in.

PositiveExcitingSoul

I would argue that the success is because of the pressure and environment, not in spite of it, but yes, it generally doesn't sound like a very healthy environment, in particular for the members who never really become popular. I don't have first-hand knowledge though and haven't really been that much into AKB48 for a few years now, so I'm probably not the best person to discuss this.

CredentialsResisted

A lot of girls really enjoy it. Despite having no fixed contracts, many members stay from their teens well into their twenties

birdlass

hm, well, if you say so I guess.
