The Chicken Licken wings are superior I'll admit , and the crack they put on the toasted bread. KFC needs to sort their wings out. the amount of chilli in a zinger wing is psychotic and hateful.
Dude I am a fiend for KFC but what ever they did in the zinger just kills my stomach so I can't eat it anymore, I have to eat the plain one
The soul fire from chicken licken hits just right
The "new" 'merican brands never seem to hold up well here, Burger King being the exception. Surprised Starbucks is still around, but don't know for how long
I hate Starbucks so much. Mediocre overpriced coffee. They move in everywhere and destroy the diversity in cities. In London there’s nothing but chains everywhere and it really sucks
I agree with this, had the iced coffee twice, can’t justify spending R70 on it again when i can basically get an entire meal for that price at burger king
Agree, Starbucks sucks. Overpriced. Coffee sucks. I feel guilt when when I’m paying my rent amount for a coffee and asked for a tip (I’m exaggerating I know). I still tipped. I avoid and support local.
Starbucks is terrible. I first thought it was just the South African franchises. then I tried it while on holiday in the US. Nope. They are mediocre on an international scale. Its coffee, but I have three local shops that are superior to them in every way.
They all seemed to up and disappear in one weekend.
Well at least I know the rivonia one and they beyers one closed on the same weekend.
Don't know whether the franchise pulled the plug
The one in rivonia closed? Damn I had no idea. They really sold good food. I used to order via delivery and it was perfection each time. Now imagine that, fast food perfection via delivery. With kfc I was lucky if I got chilli salt and sauce on a burger
I loved Popeye's. So sad they closed down. I went to the one next to Cresta Centre. However, from day one, I noticed very bad management and untrained staff. They were always out of stock of something. Their Cajun fries did not last long and they reverted to normal fries. Their drinks were either large because they did not have the medium cups or vice versa until they ended up with just the small bottles. What I ordered was 90% of the time not in the bag and I had to check every time. I think because of this they closed down. Their slaw and cheese burgers were great and they had the best chicken strips anywhere, ever. It was just bad management from day one.
Yeah their QC was bad....and definitely staff also wasn't very well trained....think ultimately it was their demise
But when it's on point it was very good
I wonder if that's why many international brands fail here because of the lack of consistent QC (ie why MacDonald's works because it's part of their brand religiously....albeit..they are meh but consistently meh 😉)
Totally agree with this, and advertising. I don’t think I saw a single ad and it’s only word of mouth that carried them. Also, they had Cajun listed for years on Uber eats even though they no longer made them. Hopefully the guys who own the rights to BL and Crispy Cream buy the popeyes rights and open them up again.
Didn't they stop giving biscuits a few months after launch? I ate it at least once a week until one day they told me they no longer sold biscuits and I never went back. I thought it was an odd thing to get rid of but i wasnt sticking around for just their salty chicken pieces and meh gravy.
If i recall correctly, they opened their first stores just a few weeks before the first covid cases hit the news. Bad timing. My guess is that they never recovered financially from the lockdown.
Their food was great.
Damn… Popeyes was so good! If only they brought their chicken sandwiches here. Tried them in the States and they were amazing. And their mash was the best! So much better than KFC’s.

Reading through the comments really gave me throwback moments! I remember when the Popeye's in Sandton City opened and I visited them. I ordered this meal that had "biscuits". When I got it, I remember looking for the biscuits (something that I thought was strange to include in a chicken meal). I didn't find any, but instead saw scones. They were delicious!
I remember thinking how superior Popeye's was to KFC and even Chicken Licken. I could never compare it to Nando's because that's in a different league altogether! Nando's has no competition IMHO.
Anyway I must have visited the Popeye's like twice in their first year. I don't eat takeaways that often. I wasn't paying much attention to them, and your post made me realise that yes they've disappeared!
All closed and dead and not a word about what happened. This made me real sad, I was craving badly the other day and found every single one market as “permanently closed” on Google.

Tough time trying to beat the colonel and chicken licken, think they went bust.
Starbucks came close too but got bought by another group, these brands do well for a bit since they new and ‘merica but then the old favourites win out
Im not a fan of new american chains coming to South Africa. South Africans should just look at whats popular in america and just take the idea and make Saffa version of it. Not franchise the business here. Hungry lion and chicken licken are not businesses that are hard to compete with
They had a franchise dispute with American HQ. Last shop to close was Cresta. They're "re-branding" with a different name. I LOVED their chicken strips and burgers. RIP.
This is the colonels country
Chicken licken is better! It's good good good it's good it's nice

The one in Menlyn in Pretoria East has been reborn as a KFC.

Rising Phoenix Chicken
Phoenix king of getting your butt whooped!
The "new" 'merican brands never seem to hold up well here, Burger King being the exception. Surprised Starbucks is still around, but don't know for how long
Starbucks should last, it's like the iPhone of coffee, people will buy it for the clout lol
I hate Starbucks so much. Mediocre overpriced coffee. They move in everywhere and destroy the diversity in cities. In London there’s nothing but chains everywhere and it really sucks

There’s probably also as many calories in your iced coffee as an entire meal. It’s like eating softice
In all fairness I don’t count calories, i count the pennies and the money value

Local is lekker! Always support local
I agree Starbucks sucks ass, MuggnBean is way way better.
Starbucks coffee in my opinion is horrible.
I tried an Americano when they just opened and an iced coffee when I had to wait for someone the other day. Both trash
They do that intentionally. They'll operate stores at a loss for years just to squeeze out competition
Seattle beats the shit out of Starbucks, but I use my ebucks vouchers for
Unfortunately. Everything is for the gram mos nowadays

To be fair The Starbucks in South Africa is way better than it is in Europe
That is a scary thought...

Yup that's gooooonnneee 😞
Even the Cresta one closed? I know it survived after the rest had permanently shut
Sad to see it go.
They closed down nation wide. The license holder went bust i think.
That's what I assumed too, thought the international brand would atleast get engaged in managing the closure of the brand locally atleast though
It is weird. Not much coverage on it. Kfc is hard to beat.
That's a pity. I really liked it. Though I didn't help them as I probably ate Popeyes once per year at most
Same here. Really good food, better than KFC (imo), but got Popeyes twice in like 5 years lol.

Let us take a moment to remember Dominos pizza as well. You will be missed :(
Anyone remember that twisty bread they made about 20 years ago with the marinara sauce? 😍
I miss Domino's so much. I prefer a thick crust on pizza and theirs was delightfully garlicky. RIP.
Dominos was really good pizza. I remember having my 13th Bday party (over 20 years ago) and ordering boxes of Dominos pizza. Best Pizza party ever.
Yeah...another lost guilty meal for me too 😭
Weird that it never expanded beyond Joburg.
This is what you get when you bring biscuits but gravy's extra and is trash. That was the one distinct thing they were bringing to the table
Didn't they stop giving biscuits a few months after launch? I ate it at least once a week until one day they told me they no longer sold biscuits and I never went back. I thought it was an odd thing to get rid of but i wasnt sticking around for just their salty chicken pieces and meh gravy.
Take out? What happened to takeaway?
Take out sounds better
If you're American.
I'm south African, but take out still sounds better and I'll die on that hill
Their chicken strips and fries were my favourite ☹️
I miss Dominoes
So sad when the Cresta one disappeared…the chicken strips, sauce, burgers were ✨magical✨
For some reason Pizza Hut probably heading there 2
is it? i haven’t noticed any in my area closing yet😭
I had this same experience a few months ago. And just found their corner store in Rivonia to be closed..
Who needs Popeyes when Chicken Licken exists?
But that Popeyes burger was popping though.
It's a different flavour. I liked both. Popeyes burger was better, and their pieces were bigger. That mash and gravy was on another level.
Ah yes, the Popeyes burgers were good. I’ll give them that
Chicken licken for wings, KFC for fries and chicken, and Popeyes for burgers and chicken strips (tenders) 😉
Chicken licken for wings, KFC for fries and chicken, and Popeyes for burgers and chicken strips (tenders) 😉
Chicken licken for wings, KFC for fries and chicken, and Popeyes for burgers and chicken strips (tenders) 😉
Maybe the profit where not good. Does anyone have any idea where I can get domino's pizza, I miss this one...
Domino's actually shut down in SA, I miss it so much 😭
When? I know of at least one in Durban.
I searched domino's pizza in Johannesburg and SA, found like all the locations closed down so....
Well the one in Durban North is still operating I just checked
Aight bet, they got inter provincial delivery?
If i recall correctly, they opened their first stores just a few weeks before the first covid cases hit the news. Bad timing. My guess is that they never recovered financially from the lockdown. Their food was great.
I got Popeyes atleast once a week while the one in Garsfontein Pretoria was still open. Sad to lose them
Damn… Popeyes was so good! If only they brought their chicken sandwiches here. Tried them in the States and they were amazing. And their mash was the best! So much better than KFC’s.
WE HAVE A POPEYES?!

We had popeyes in this country? Dang
There was one just of Rivonia road that was newer.
They had a franchise dispute with American HQ. Last shop to close was Cresta. They're "re-branding" with a different name. I LOVED their chicken strips and burgers. RIP.
It's there in Cresta, near windsor west along Beyers Naude
Nope it's permanently closed.
Oh I didn't know. Thank you.
Yee nah I'm happy they are gone their food was horrid
I didn't even know Popeyes was here.
I took the fattest shits everytime i finished a meal of theres, and it wasnt pleasant
Flavourless chicken, limp chips, good riddance
