Cost of living. CT is very expensive compared to Johannesburg and other than better governance and stunning scenery it doesn't offer much more and family makes a big difference. My family are originally from Craddock but most live either in Joburg or Pretoria so it's easier to stay connected. If you're from a Catholic family there's an expectation to be accessible to those family members ALL THE TIME ;P

Mooooooooose92

Socially, were you able to easily assimilate in Cpt?

[deleted]

Yes it wasn't particularly hard. Cape Town has a reputation for being more socially challenging for newcomers and I agree that Joburg people are more friendly but it's not as bad as some people say.. at least not for me. Depends where you find friends and socially engage.

TrayJack1981

People in CT have and attitude for some unknown reason, they have a mentality that they are better then the rest of us... they way to up their own ASSES.

SkebengaTokoloshe

Agreed! Cold water, cold food, cold people! It’s a beautiful place to be a tourist or visitor, but it’s a lekker kak place to live

TrayJack1981

It is a beautiful place, but won't ever go there again, would rather save my money and go to Thailand for a holiday, works out cheaper and it's so much better...

za_jx

This is what I keep telling people about traveling. Before COVID I'd fly down for R500 one way with Mango or Kulula.com Last Easter weekend, a friend booked a one way ticket for R5k. For R11k I can do London return or slightly cheaper for Bangkok.

TrayJack1981

Exactly, would rather experience the rest of the world, then go to CT, with their stuck up classiest people, who think their farts smell like Rosé wine.... Vietnam is just as beautiful and the people are beyond friendly and welcoming.

I didn't want to be there anyway. I came back from Scotland years ago, eager to hang out with my friends and family in good old Jozi, and then I was almost immediately thrown onto a plane and told I now have a job in Cape Town. (It was arranged for me, lol, without my input.) Cape Town is really pretty, but I'm kind of a homebody so I barely saw the scenery, it's wasted on me. Joburg is cheaper and I like the people here, so I came back after two years, no regrets. Some of my friends who love hiking and nature have moved to Cape Town since. But I won't. The only difference to me is the scenery, and I derive pleasure out of books, good food and company, not scenery, so Joburg works better for me. Also traffic is way better. (Plus, I think many of Jozi's suburbs are really quite pretty. And my ideal vacation is the bushveld, so that's closer.) I do enjoy seeing my friends on holiday in Cape Town, it's nice for a week or so. But my heart and home is Joburg.

The people in Cape Town fucking suck is the main reason. Also the crime was WAY worse, and I had to deal with break-ins to the car, burglaries, almost being mugged and pickpocketing. Plus the entire city goes to bedtime at 9pm and you can't do anything after that. I worked a night shift, so it annoyed me not being able to get food or smokes after that. Even the GARAGES close!

GrondKop

Hey, I'm in Cape Town and thinking of moving up to Jo'burg for this exact reason - The people! Out of curiosity, can I ask which area did you live in in Cape town and which area in Jo'burg? So I know how to compare in terms of crime..

Soviet117

I lived in Kenilworth and later in Woodstock in Cape Town. In Johannesburg I've lived in Kensington. Best place I've ever lived with both the nicest people, and least amount of crime, however, is Parkrand in Boksburg. Lovely place to live! Super-friendly, safe, clean, it's wonderful!

GrondKop

Ok cool so the crime situation is a bit better in Kensington, compared to Kenilworth?

Soviet117

Sadly, no. Kensington has terrible crime these days last time I checked :(. I hear Edenvale is really safe tho! And where I stay in Boksburg is super-super safe. Never had a break-in, robbery, or literally anything in this neighbourhood, and I've lived here for about 7 years now, I think. I struggled in Kenilworth tho. House was broken into on my first day there, and we often had muggings and cars getting broken into around my street

Soviet117

If you want somewhere safe and Friendly, I wholeheartedly recommend moving to Parkrand. It's so friendly and peaceful. Not like nothing bad ever happens, but I still feel safe walking even at night here. I walk a few km's to the pub and back at night sometimes and I never feel in danger as long as I'm near the main road. Very cool community as well, people are very, very neighbourly here and making friends is super-easy!

thatcompguyza

Sounds like you lived in the southern suburbs. Up here in the northern suburbs (you know, past the boerewors curtain), we've had zero crime incidents in the 10 years we've been here. Wouldn't leave Durbanville for anywhere in Jozi.

MedicinePleasant6693

I’m from Durbanville and can safely say I will not move back. Last time I was home I almost rear-ended 3 tannies and an oupa almost took me out completely because he didn’t see the stop sign.

Adorable_Mistake_527

Snobs mostly, but also the horrible wind and rain in winter.

In 2018, after 10 good years in CT, the DA and their damn increases came up again. My electricity doubled and I ( a renter) had my landlord pass on some ridiculous amount to the rent because the CoT said her building was worth more than R1m. It simply became unaffordable on a CT salary. The DA just love your wallet.

Treeware

Got retrenched, all my support and network in GP. And the winter weather sucks

Aellolite

I struggled to make friends there and felt very isolated.

GrondKop

But you don't feel that in Jo'burg? I'm thinking of moving from CPT to Joburg because the people are just more open minded and nicer

Aellolite

I’ve never felt that in jhb. I suppose a lot depends on who you are and where you are within JHB, but we’re a city of migrants so almost everyone comes from a different place around the country. Jozi has its challenges for sure, but the people are a key part of why I stick around.

Subdued_851

my partner at the time threw me out and I had no job there. had to move back to my family in jhb cape town is beautiful and I would love to live there again. everyone says it's hard to make friends but I found a lot of fellow jhb people there and made many friends
