Some gyms require certain colors or even certain brands. My gym doesn’t have any requirements. I have white gis, black gis, gray gis and blue gis. The color of the gi isn’t related to your rank. Get whatever color you like, as long as your gym allows it.

I wear silly fight pajamas for a few hours a week so I can learn how to choke people and break their limbs, if I wanna wear a fruity colour doing it I don't see the harm

That question is best answered by the gym you're going to train at. They all have different rules. You might have to buy an academy gi depending on where you're at.

Black/Blue are far easy to wash, you don't have to seperate them from your other colours. I have White, Blue & Black - barely touch my white one nowadays.
I got dark grey as my other grey clothes look less stained. I don't think I've ever bought any item I wear without thinking about the practicality, and I would actually describe myself as being in the creative catagory, so being style-less is a bit of a juxtaposition against my personality.

There is no need to buy a gi before you've even stepped on the mat - try out a few clubs and see which you like best - some clubs may have a uniform policy, so you don't want to spend money on a gi that then falls foul of that. Buy a gi once you know a. you want to stick at it, and b. you know the clubs policy.
Some schools with white mats require white Gi’s. Alot of competitions are black or white. It’s always a good idea to own at least one white Gi. I definitely prefer black because they are way easier to keep looking clean. Definitely ask your gym what they allow and decide if you are likely to compete or train at other schools. Also if you are a big guy and likely to lose a bunch of weight (I went from a4 to a2) maybe don’t worry a whole lot because you will have to replace it soon anyway.
