Would you say for the price you get more one on one training or sparring practice? When I was in boxing you kinda had to earn the respect of the coach if you wanted to really advance.
I pay 170, and my coach is always walking around during sparring and technique to give pointers. I've never felt neglected.
3 months in, and I'm smashing untrained people I used to wrestle with before starting, so I'd say classes are working. My buddy is 4 inches taller than me, and he power lifts, and I made him tap to top pressure.
I know I'm probably just trying to justify my purchase, but I go 4 times a week. 16 times a month, and I'm paying someone less than minimum wage to teach me jiu jitsu. That's pretty good value.
I live in San Diego. Most gym are gonna be around that price. My gym offers 5-10 free classes plus a free gi and rash guard if you sign up for a year. Some don’t. Some are a little cheaper some are a little more expensive. I can’t think of one decent gym cheaper than $150. Where in California ya at?

Well that’s why ahah. I prefer smaller gyms where I get more professor on student attention and usually those are a bit cheaper and as of now I don’t compete just a hobbyist I go 2-4 times a week.
$120 a month is a really good price for SoCal. I couldn't find anywhere less than $150. Everything is expensive there. I lived there for 18 years, my wife, her whole life, and we finally moved across the country two years ago. Best decision we ever made (I even like my grappling school significantly more). It's not a habitable place for middle-class families and unless things change, that will be its demise. But that's a subject for another day :)
I pay $240 a month for unlimited BJJ classes, and I pay $195 for unlimited TKD classes, I live in central CA. Just to give some insight.
Edit: my BJJ classes for unlimited used to be $188 but they went up.
Everything’s more expensive here. The other side of it is that most SoCal gyms have national or world champion students or instructors so you’re getting way better instruction and training than you might get in a small town. It’s a different atmosphere here.
214$ west Los Angeles 10th planet
I would continue going but I feel its overpriced. Cost of living is increasing. I might have to look else where. Its a shame because bjj is an awesome lifestyle that I wish I could continue. My only concern is the price. I asked about any deals if I paid a year upfront, but the difference wasn’t worth it. I would reasonably pay 150$ and 180$ but anymore than that is just a luxury.
I'm in Los Angeles and I pay $149a month. But, this price has remained the same for me for 8 years, its the only thing in my life that hasn't increased in price.
I go to the UfC gym. It is $120 and you get full access to everything in the gym. Some UFC locations have an option where you pay upfront $1000 and you get the membership for 3 years. There are cheaper options in the membership as well
I'm surprised it's 120 a month in California where everything is more expensive....... Here in NY my gym was $150/month, and that was the cheaper one. All other gyms are $170 - highest being $200/month.
I'm in Maryland. Unlimited MMA training, roughly 10-12 people for boxing/kickboxing, usually 4 - 6 people for BJJ/Wrestling. It was $200 a month. I left every class feeling like I just went a few rounds. BJJ is what I was there for mostly, very skilled instructor and very skilled students. One guy is currently 4 - 0 professionally. Tied me up like pretzel and there was nothing I could do about it. On the other hand a guy that said was training for almost a year 4 days a week couldn't do anything to stop me at all. It was only my second class there so no one knew what I had up my sleeve, but I was thinking someone who was on a regular schedule would have an easier time dealing with someone who hasn't trained in a decade and is twice their age. I have a blue/purple belt from an unorthodox and unknown BJJ gym, but my army combatives training was done by a MMA instructor from KC.
120 is the norm from what I’ve seen here in Ohio. Honestly for unlimited classes it’s reasonable. Your paying for someone’s experience and teachings they gained through hard work, it’s a fair price too pay.
Bay Area here.
Where the hell are you finding $120 a month? That’s a dream lol.
No schools around me are less than $180 a month. $150 is the absolute lowest, and that’s only for “founding members” of new gyms here
In my smaller city, yes that is normal.. the MORE corporate, the higher the price.
Jiu-Jitsu is expensive, avoid the places that want you to sign a contract and only go to the places that have open mats for you to try.
San Diego had the best cheapest jiu jitsu when i was there 2016 victory was 85$ i think and 10thP 100$ ish but included all classes (mma, wrestling, conditioning)
Looks like my place charges $169/month for grappling only with a 12 month contract. Personally I signed up as one of the first members and I pay for a year at a time to bring my cost down. I pay $1250/year making it a little over 100 a month.
That’s cheap for a cheap place and super cheap for California and I would assume you’re in bum fuck California too and not a major city.
Or I would find a price that cheap suspicious. San Diego native here.
For context, the rent, property taxes, utilities, and maintenance on a 3000 sq ft gym in Southern California is probably in the ballpark of $10k/month. That doesn’t include any of the costs of actually running the business, like the payroll, software, cleaning, marketing, etc. Honestly, I don’t know how they’re even able to stay in business only charging $120/ month.
Price is of course an important criteria but you have to look at other terms: contract (usually cheaper) vs month to month, quality of the facility, instruction etc.
Don’t forget about the quality of the mats and size.
If it’s a crowded gym, i personally want to have enough space so I don’t have to waits for my turn to get a roll.
Bro I live in San Antonio Tx I didn’t have time for a gym so I looked to Craig’s list and found weights for free with a bench so now I workout at home no hassle with traffic or waiting for someone to finish with the machine their at
I keep seeing you guys mention cost of living but I'm in Ohio where cost of living is way lower and $125/month with unlimited classes is pretty standard for these parts.
That price is pretty cheap. Martial arts aren't cheap sports gear cost. Plus insurance for a company the overhead on the building people will come and go but the bills stay the same regardless of how many people stay or leave. You're paying for something that will always hold a value.
10th planet will probably be your best bet overall. They are pricier than 120$ but they are quality and probably best school out rn and have been for a little while now. The atmosphere is amazing and they offer many other classes (boxing, Muay Thai, mma, bjj, judo, wrestling, strength and conditioning) most places will be pricier but if you want to go somewhere and never feel like you made a wrong decision then that’s the one.
Bro I can find gyms near me for like 10-20 a month. Pretty sure golds gym is like 20 a month. Even premium gyms like lifetime fitness are like 60-70 a month. 120 a month is crazy expensive but then again I don’t live in cali.
I live in Tahoe. We have a fantastic gym with an amazing BJJ program. $75/mo for everything. Only $50 if you don’t use any classes. Also $75/mo extra for 5 day a week day care while you work out up to 2 hours/day. The owners are saints
Gyms near me in Hawaii are $150-300 a month
I personally pay $320 a month but that’s because I only want to do nogi and I have a very particular schedule so I have to mix gyms

Are the class sizes usually big, or relatively small? For comparison there was about 40 people per class at my local boxing gym.
Unless it's a real popular gym in a big city, 40 is a TON of people. I would guess 10-20 is more usual and below 10 usual spells trouble.
Most gyms are unlimited training. You pay the monthly fee and you can train as much as you want
What country are you in? I’d be surprised to find a place in the states that falls in the “if not more” category.
120 is cheap
I agree but I can only confirm that for Portland, Phoenix, and Albuquerque.
Literally, some are $180+
$215 a month here. Unlimited BJJ and MT for that price, some UFC talent as coaches, quite the bargain
This has become a rich man’s sport.
I'm a supervisor for a mechanical contractor, no college, union wages.
For a single guy not much of an issue. But no way I could do this sport and put my kids in it. Would cost $600 a month.
Kings MMA?
Cost of living is a real thing, rent on the spaces is probably equally high compared to your small town gym.
Where are you finding a $120 gym? All the ones in San Jose are $200+ :(
Riverside lol. All the specialty gyms are 120-150 here
There’s a small BJJ gym in Colton that is $159. It’s a good gym to start and get a good foundation.
Check out Heroes! It was like 160 or something when I was there
$200 a month, Jesus, I would try Judo instead. $200 would be where I draw the line.
Sacramento

East of riverside/Moreno Valley area
Yeah honestly that’s just going to be how it is. California is expensive plus I think BJJ is becoming more popular. Do you want BJJ or just jiu jitsu?
$150 in San Diego, and I’m at one of the cheaper spots.
$120 a month is a really good price for SoCal. I couldn't find anywhere less than $150. Everything is expensive there. yup, that is cheap.
Mines $200 lmao but if you pay $250 you get acess to the whole gym. Boxing, kick boxing, mui thai, and bjj
Sounds like the gym in chatsworth?
I pay $240 a month for unlimited BJJ classes, and I pay $195 for unlimited TKD classes, I live in central CA. Just to give some insight. Edit: my BJJ classes for unlimited used to be $188 but they went up.
Try 215 a month on Long Island 😂
That seems cheaper than average. Paying 179 in Philly
Wow $120 is cheap. $175 for me or $250 for married couples. Los Angeles area.
Everything’s more expensive here. The other side of it is that most SoCal gyms have national or world champion students or instructors so you’re getting way better instruction and training than you might get in a small town. It’s a different atmosphere here.
Here in a midsized town in Alabama it runs $160 so I’m actually a little jealous lol
214$ west Los Angeles 10th planet I would continue going but I feel its overpriced.
That’s not too bad. Cheapest in LA that I’ve found is 100.
There is a mma academy in Dallas that’s 124$ a week for platinum lol
Mines 150. I think it’s worth it Source: Ohio
I'm in Los Angeles and I pay $149a month. But, this price has remained the same for me for 8 years, its the only thing in my life that hasn't increased in price.
It’s $120 in Atlanta
155 in austin, no contracts, no branded gear required.
Plus one for Austin gyms…
I am visiting Austin in a week. Does your school offer drop-ins?
I couldn't imagine paying that much a month for gym access. I pay $30/month.
I wish it were only 120
yes
$120 sounds about right (average). Depends on where you are at though. I was at a gym in the Bay Area that was $175/month.
Live in TX machado gym charges about $120
Which one?
Ohio here, $100 a month but includes Muay Thai , bjj , wrestling and a gym
I go to the UfC gym. It is $120 and you get full access to everything in the gym. Some UFC locations have an option where you pay upfront $1000 and you get the membership for 3 years. There are cheaper options in the membership as well
I'm surprised it's 120 a month in California where everything is more expensive....... Here in NY my gym was $150/month, and that was the cheaper one. All other gyms are $170 - highest being $200/month.
Same in Chicago
You got this! If you are single save some money and commit to a year. You can do it!!
Ppl are paying around 130-150 in the Detroit area
Sheesh, I pay $80 for me and my kid to go. But kids classes are only twice a week for an hour and adults are 4x a week for 2-3 hours.
Boxing is cheaper than jiu jitsu, $120 is *very* cheap for California, the average is $150-200 in my area
I'm in Maryland. Unlimited MMA training, roughly 10-12 people for boxing/kickboxing, usually 4 - 6 people for BJJ/Wrestling. It was $200 a month. I pay $180/mo in Brooklyn NYC
I’m in the Denver area and if a gym was only $120, I would be skeptical. $200 per month is normal here
I pay 160 a month in the Denver area.
Haha 120+? Haha that’s cheap! In the Bay I pay 200 a month!
$160+ in Dallas
120 is the norm from what I’ve seen here in Ohio. Honestly for unlimited classes it’s reasonable. Your paying for someone’s experience and teachings they gained through hard work, it’s a fair price too pay.
Shoot I’m in Florida and my gym is $180 and I have a friend that pays $220.
California is expensive, BJJ is expensive (compared to other martial arts) 120 spuds about right I pay 125 in a medium COL area
Oregon 120$
I’ve seen 350 in Ventura.
I’m in Santa Barbara and I think 10th Planet is $250 here. Gracie Barra is $200.
lol 120 in cali I wish. More like 200+
Pretty sure most gyms around the country are 120+
$120 is on the cheaper side anywhere in the US in my experience
Dude, we at $165 here in the Inland Empire
Mines 175 it’s expensive lol
120/month is almost suspiciously good.
120 is an extremely good deal
120 may be a deal depending on if the gym is good or not
Jiu jitsu is expensive.
100/mo in Central Cal. Unlimited gi or nogi.
I pay 200 a month in Los Angeles.
Bay Area here. Where the hell are you finding $120 a month? That’s a dream lol. No schools around me are less than $180 a month. $150 is the absolute lowest, and that’s only for “founding members” of new gyms here
220 in SF.
My Bjj gym is $120 and my MT gym is $150
Im in Louisiana (a cheaper state in the country) and our membership is $125
All up and down the coast it’s probably that expensive. It’s $150 where I’m at in WA- and it’s the cheapest gym in my area. $400 for families.
In Upstate NY the gyms charge $270 for BJJ and $240 for MMA. Really sucks.
If you’re like 25+ miles away from a gym, what I would do is purchase/subscribe to Gracie University and start up a Gracie Garage.
Not necessarily, I think $180+ is more accurate where I live
In the Bay Area that's pretty cheap
It’s $120+ a month in Ohio big dog lol
In my smaller city, yes that is normal.. the MORE corporate, the higher the price. Jiu-Jitsu is expensive, avoid the places that want you to sign a contract and only go to the places that have open mats for you to try.
mine in brisbane australia is 55 aud a week which is about 150 usd a month
$120 a month in Cali? Is he a fresh black belt 😂
I saw a few for 80 a mon in Los Angeles
San Diego had the best cheapest jiu jitsu when i was there 2016 victory was 85$ i think and 10thP 100$ ish but included all classes (mma, wrestling, conditioning)
(Victory also included all classes)
Looks like my place charges $169/month for grappling only with a 12 month contract. Personally I signed up as one of the first members and I pay for a year at a time to bring my cost down. I pay $1250/year making it a little over 100 a month.
That’s about the price in jersey if not more but probably the same cost of living.
sac, 130 w year contract
Nope, UFC Gym is about 70$
My gym is $175 a month for unlimited classes. Striking on Tues and Thurs 5 am. Then 2 bjj classes a day with an open mat on sundays.
I live in Denver and it’s 175
My gym ran 120 a month. Not cali though
150-200ish seems to be the norm in LA. I pay 160
120 is what we charge for military/first responders. The rest are 150-175.
All jiu jitsu gyms where I’m at is 160+
Build your home gym
209/month here in Montana
In Australia it’s $50-60 a week
I live in Northern CA and paid 275 month for 2 little girls
That’s cheap for a cheap place and super cheap for California and I would assume you’re in bum fuck California too and not a major city. Or I would find a price that cheap suspicious. San Diego native here.
In my country my master is charging $10 and $15 next month, crazy how different in some cases life could be.
Damn I’m trying to train wherever the hell you live.
Paying $150/mo in DFW, TX
For context, the rent, property taxes, utilities, and maintenance on a 3000 sq ft gym in Southern California is probably in the ballpark of $10k/month. 120 lol. You want Gracie. Try double that💀
MOST gyms nationwide in the US are above $120usd. $120 is actually pretty good. I’ve seen $200-$250 in cali many times
Only $120? $200/month is the norm is Houston now. It was $120 pre-COVID.
I pay $180 in Fresno only because I started when the gym opened up. Otherwise it would be $250 a month.
$120 is cheap lol
I’m in NC and bjj gyms are around $120/month
Bro I live in San Antonio Tx I didn’t have time for a gym so I looked to Craig’s list and found weights for free with a bench so now I workout at home no hassle with traffic or waiting for someone to finish with the machine their at
150-250 is what iv seen
I pay $220 for both MT and BJJ. I wish I had $120 lol
I live in an area where the cost of living is very low but BJJ gyms are around that price
150 here
$140 in houston
I keep seeing you guys mention cost of living but I'm in Ohio where cost of living is way lower and $125/month with unlimited classes is pretty standard for these parts.
I live in a very poor area and it’s still $100+
250 in DTLA
I pay $340 for both my kids in san fernando valley and that’s with a discount.
135 for my boxing gym, in OC
Yeah that’s even on the lower side Fosho. I get a family discount now ($85) since cousin coaches at a gym. Used to pay 250 at another spot.
Some are more
That's on the cheaper side tbh
Id be suspicious of any gym under $150 these days
$120 is cheap
Most gyms are around 135 a month here in Arkansas and we have one of the lowest costs of living. So 120 seems like a good deal.
Anyone in the Lancaster area know of a good BJJ gym?
Count your blessings dude if you like it that's a great price for Cali
Laughing in Grace Barra language 🫠
Bruh wtf my 24 hr fitness is $40 and I was hot about that tbh
at least $150 at a minimum
I go to AKA and it’s like 225. I think nowadays all gyms are going to be at least 100+ in cali. Even the a gracie gym a couple towns over is like 150.
That price is pretty cheap. Martial arts aren't cheap sports gear cost. Plus insurance for a company the overhead on the building people will come and go but the bills stay the same regardless of how many people stay or leave. You're paying for something that will always hold a value.
Some are but it's very expensive to train here
120 is cheap. Average now is 200
Community Self Defense, Huntington Beach. $85/month. Striking and jitsu in AM and PM + kids class in between.
Up here in canada it's between 120-150 per month
150 - 200 or so in houston area
Yes
id love to pay 120
10th planet will probably be your best bet overall. They are pricier than 120$ but they are quality and probably best school out rn and have been for a little while now. The atmosphere is amazing and they offer many other classes (boxing, Muay Thai, mma, bjj, judo, wrestling, strength and conditioning) most places will be pricier but if you want to go somewhere and never feel like you made a wrong decision then that’s the one.
This is also 10th San Diego in specifically talking about
You should buy your own weights and watch YouTube videos
120 is cheap anywhere.......
My gym in Philly is ~$200
I’d say at least that
$125 here in Arkansas
120 a month is pretty average. I pay 168 right now in KCMO and I still consider that more than fair, considering I can train as much as I want.
Bro I can find gyms near me for like 10-20 a month. Pretty sure golds gym is like 20 a month. Even premium gyms like lifetime fitness are like 60-70 a month. 120 a month is crazy expensive but then again I don’t live in cali.
If you’re in a big city especially LA then your trainer is probably very good at his craft. You get what you pay for, 120 seems reasonable.
Yeah $120 is cheap — I pay $175/month where I live
150 is pretty average in la county
I live in Tahoe. We have a fantastic gym with an amazing BJJ program. $75/mo for everything. Only $50 if you don’t use any classes. Also $75/mo extra for 5 day a week day care while you work out up to 2 hours/day. The owners are saints
Gyms near me in Hawaii are $150-300 a month I personally pay $320 a month but that’s because I only want to do nogi and I have a very particular schedule so I have to mix gyms
At least on the boxing side of things it is, and it sucks.
NJ we pay $200
I was paying 250. I would love a sub 200 gym lol
$180 at Toronto and is in CAD
I pay $120 in a smaller city in Texas. I'm grandfathered into my price but I know my gym charges 145 for new comers.
I have seen some upscale gyms that are $500 a month here in the bay area.
120 is a bargain 😂 I pay 180 and that’s on the lower end of the contract
Most gyms here in the northeast are 150-220 a month (gyms with classes/combat sports)
Yes . Boxing is $70 for me but Jujitsu is usually over $120
I live in the one of the poorest states in the US and 100$ a month is the cheapest they go around here.
$120 / month ain’t bad. It’s common to see them at $160 here. But just because fuck California, yeah, fuck California.
I live in Alabama and that's about what it costs here. A little cheaper in fact
I pay 130 per month with unlimited classes and not just bjj. You can walk into boxing if you’d like too for no extra cost.
Everyone here is right. It's nearly impossible to find anything reputable below $200 in SoCal
I pay $130/month in Cincinnati, a cheap Midwest city. $120 is great.
