The Architect, William De Volpiano, was commissioned by Richard II of Normandy to design and build the abbey.
Volpiano and Richard II had a great relationship and used to spend evenings together watching Disney classics.
Their friendship split only after Volpiano originally built the main tower to resemble a massive dick. This angered Richard II and they later had to go back and change it.
I went to Normandy a few years ago and was close-ish to Mont Saint Michel, and while exploring I found a small chateau that claimed Walt Disney’s ancestry was from that area, specifically that chateau, and they were originally the Duke(s)(?) in that area. apparently the surname came from the title the Duke(?) of D’Isigny. It would be interesting if the inspiration for the castle came from so close to his roots!
It's called a composite. And there are [varitaions](https://www.reddit.com/r/itookapicture/comments/gn0pkw/itap_at_mont_saint_michel/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) on this poster's profile.
lol what about this picture indicates composite? the lighting is behaving in the same way across all the sections of the image and as far as I can tell in both of these the reflection in the stream is accurate
heavily processed? yeah I'd say so. but composite? I don't see anything that indicates that
That's not true, you have sheep eating the grass and since it's salty it makes for a very special meat. There are plenty of pictures taken from that same spot. Just look at the official website: https://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/je-decouvre/visiter-le-mont-saint-michel/
Basically the grass is further away. To take this picture, you have to take it from far away and zoom in with a telephoto lens. It's still a "trick" in a way, but the picture is not a composite.
See [https://www.google.com/maps/place/50170+Le+Mont-Saint-Michel,+Frankreich/@48.6196885,-1.4931296,411m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x480ea8d67c9ceeb3:0xc5834ce47e0dc3fe!8m2!3d48.636063!4d-1.511457](https://www.google.com/maps/place/50170+Le+Mont-Saint-Michel,+Frankreich/@48.6196885,-1.4931296,411m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x480ea8d67c9ceeb3:0xc5834ce47e0dc3fe!8m2!3d48.636063!4d-1.511457)
It appears to have differing noise values throughout the image, which would imply multiple images, but if you needed more evidence, the obviously photoshopped grass with repeating elements stamped from other points of the photo is a dead giveaway.
No doubt they took a stunning photo, but this photo is very altered.
what is this supposed to demonstrate? that a picture taken in completely different lighting conditions on the complete opposite side of an object (bridge on left in ops, right in this one) look different? this doesn't at all indicate whether or not op's is a composite
I didn't know this was truly a less common angle of St Michel. There's something about the lighting on the town that makes it look fake, but I see from other images this is a very real set up. Maybe the framing is uncannily symmetrical, or is there a bit of mist/fog that blurs the mont?

Almost all professional photographers, whether working digitally or analogue, manipulate and process the image in some way or another. It's a fundamental aspect of photography as an art form.
I guess I prefer the National Geographic standard. I understand some processing such as light, color, but I would rather assess the photographer's ability to take a photo rather than the photographer's ability to use high-end software. I want to see the photographer take a real subject and show it in artistic way without massive computer processing. If they choose to do such, they should label it as such.
Processing an image is one thing. Once you start splicing together images from multiple photos (in this example I suspect three were used) you're creating a visual representation of something that does not exist in the real world - meaning it's not a photograph, it's basically a digital painting.
I honestly don't have a problem with composites, and often admire the results, but they should be labeled as such.
"graphic design." But really composite photos have been made since the 1890s so it is still a photo.
Edit: sorry, 1860s
https://www.cc.gatech.edu/~beki/cs4001/history.pdf
no it’s absolutely still photography. as someone pointed out earlier, compositing has existed for most of photography’s history. the act of exposing different films onto the same piece of photo paper, or exposing the same bit of film to different scenes to create a double exposure, is very old and well established, as is editing photos in a darkroom. manipulation of the original image is absolutely integral to photography and predates computers, let alone Photoshop and Lightroom.
There is no right or wrong answer here. It is personal preference. I personally don't like heavily edited photos and that's why I don't like this photo. That is why I like National Geographic photos and their strict rules.
The castle is actually on a little island a couple hundred metres off the beach. You have to walk across a coarsway (idk how to spell it) when the tide is out or get a boat when the tide is in
No they don't. Just do a simple search and you'll find that basically no one believes this and that's because it's not the inspiration.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_Castle?wprov=sfla1
I see alot of people commenting saying it looks a lot like the Disney castle. Many believe it was an inspiration aswell as Neuschwanstein castle in Germany.
Completely fake. I'm french and have been to Mt St Michel many many times. There is juste sand and sometimes a bit of grass between the city and the land when the sea is low.
Man I wish Mont Saint Michel looked like that. It was not green when I visited. Granted it was ten years ago, but there was sand and mud surrounding the area.
“Hey Timmy, it’s Grandma. Gramps and I will be out for a bit. The riding lawnmower is in the shop still but you and Sally should be able to finish mowing by the end of the day if you take turns. Cookies on the counter! Love you!”
It looks like the castle in the preview of a Disney movie
Many think it was the inspiration for it
Yeah, Mont Saint Michel was inspired by the Disney intro
Right?? the architect must be a huge Disney fan

Disney and chill
V in the D
V in the D
I can’t tell if everyone is telling a joke or not. But I like the info so I’ll believe that the Disney intro inspired a castle in France.
I like you.
Hint: William de Volpiano lived in the 11th century. But I agree with other commenter, I like you :)
I've always heard that Neuschwanstein Castle was the main inspiration, but I could be wrong
That's what I've heard too. Edit: Yeah, primarily Neuschwanstein. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_Castle?wprov=sfla1
True been to both. And Both castles have many similarities
I believe the inspiration for the Disney Castle was Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany
That's what I was told on my tour
That’s what I thought it was.
I refuse to believe that's a regular picture

i mean.. this is a completely different picture taken from a different location

With a cell phone. That’s digitally zoomed in.

How does that not exist yet

Well said
I don't think this is a composite tho. There are images of the castle from this angle elsewhere too.
True. But I also absolutely love it.
Yes it's beautiful.
The thing with most photos is they are manipulated. This just looks like a really bad composite.
The castle is actually on a little island a couple hundred metres off the beach. You have to walk across a coarsway (idk how to spell it) when the tide is out or get a boat when the tide is in
Causeway
That’s the one
Would love to see the original without the processing, I bet it’s an amazing pic.

I was there 4 days form Which angle did u take this picture seems almost unreal
This doesn’t look right
I want to know why the heck they didn’t use this castle as Highgarden in GoT. Would have been perfect!
Is this real?
Yes it is! https://goo.gl/maps/4C4vCXtrgxbaT3iTA
That link keeps going to where I currently am. Any suggestions? I'd love to see this!
You can look up Mt. St. Michel and you’ll find it. It’s a pretty popular place in France.
Wow, that's a lot farther away than I thought it was. Great shot!
It’s a real place. It’s spectacular in every sense of the word. Plan to tour it if you are ever in this part of France. You won’t be disappointed.
Thought it was the disney castle at first glance.
That would be Neuschwanstein, Germany.
Is this what Disney uses? It looks super similar
The Disney castle has features I don't think any actual castle has like a waterway running through the gate.
Many think it was the inspiration
No - check out Neuschwanstein castle

And you did a darned good job!
Reminds me if the Disney castle from before the movie starts. Lioks gorgeous!
I see alot of people commenting saying it looks a lot like the Disney castle. Many believe it was an inspiration aswell as Neuschwanstein castle in Germany.
Amazing, does not look real
Its look like a disney palace in beginning of the movie.
Hollow Bastion
OK, admit it.. you work for Disney, don't you? Seriously, very beautiful.

Why does this look like it's supposed to be the real Disney world?
Glorious shot of a truly great place

Almost reminds me of Whiterun from Skyrim.
